Paul was DEFINITELY a BETTER RIVAL than Gary. Paul actually made Ash think and come up with strategy and actually have character development along with the his "years" of experience from the other leagues
His Lake Acuity battle had Ash think about if his way of raising Pokemon was truly working. He truly tested Ash's moral standpoint and was the only rival, other than Gary, that made him have feel like he had something to prove
dude no way you put gary over paul! I get it Gary was his long time rival and the original rival but the relationship ash had with Paul was a lot more tense and having chimchar being in the mix just put more fuel to the fire, i also think that the battles demonstrated how much they hated each other. Me personally, Gary 2 and Paul 1 but that's just me👍🏼

Sawyer was my favorite rival for the simple fact that he admired ash to the point he went from a novice trainer to actually surpassing XY Ash and caused a redemption arc for Ash. Their Kalos League battle is probably my favorite animated battle in all of Pokemon
No because they just had the one battle. Bea and Ash went back and forth and were in the same class like true rivals. Rivals grow together. Leon was the strongest already and Ash was a scrub.

Paul is deff the best rival personally for me , the character development both ash and paul had throughout the series , the hatred at first and respect at last , the battle they had in the sinnoh league and lake acuity, the chimchar plot , everything was so well done. Ash and paul also learned a lot from each other and they see each other like every few episodes of the anime. Paul’s really strong too , if he had a Pokémon that could mega evolve , do a z move or gigantamax , he most likely would’ve got in the masters 8- , Gary is great and all but he’s just a nostalgic rival, he’s strong but just not to Paul’s level in battling
I honestly think Paul was Ash's best rival. Paul's own brother said how much his brother and Ash were polar opposites on how they viewed and treated their Pokemon. Ash also had to come up with top-tier strategies to try and defeat Paul, and in the Sinnoh League, it was only through Infernape's pure willpower that I feel Ash was only able to win that fight. In the end, Paul hadn't really changed, but he could admit that Ash was the better trainer.

I think Gary and Paul should switch places. The problem with Gary as a rival is that the dynamic is essentially comparing him and Ash for more than half of their rivalry is more tall than actual show. Yes, it’s true Gary had been a step ahead, but all his accomplishments feel more hyped up compared to what we actually see of him. In my opinion, I actually find that rather underwhelming on Gary’s part. Would you rather hear about his accomplishments and capabilities, or actually see them? Paul on the other hand was handled correctly from start-to-finish. The dynamic with Ash was always actually building towards something, and created a more compelling, concrete, constructive, but also profound and challenging storyline between the two as trainers. Also, Paul’s capabilities and prowess were actually shown instead of merely talked about, making it all the more impactful when Paul defeats Ash and other trainers, and shows Ash that he’s got some catching up to do. Everything was more cohesive and much more fleshed out/better developed. Also, I think Paul was generally much more interesting than Gary as a whole. From his dynamic with Ash, their contrasts, from how Paul proves himself as a rival, how Paul operates, his motivation, his battles, etc.
Someone like allan and serena who just pops up and be extremely good at stuff are not the type of character i liked. The character i liked are the character that started fresh , fallen into deep lose and come back to develop
