OMG this video is so well put together!!! Like you legit deserve wayyy more subs, youre super underrated!! ^^ also hau is my favorite like hes just so pure 😭😭
Thank you so much!!
@@TheRogueRenegade You’re welcome!! :D
Brandon 😵
SO TRUEE
Also i subbed today at 159k subs and now it's 160k!!
Yk it’s funny May’s dialogue is more than Brandon’s so technically there’s a reason she has more character. She’s programmed to speak much more lmao
It all makes sense now
@@TheRogueRenegade it’s hilarious but it explains why may got more character. It’s a speed running trick because the may dialogue is like an extra 2 minutes of game time I believe.
This also happens with Lyra and Ethan in Pokemon Heart Gold and Soul Silver, Lyra chats way more and her friendship with her Marill is more emphasized

I love how Hau and Gladion are polar opposites, yet work together so well, like a good cop bad cop.
That reminds me of the scene where Hau and Gladion are asking Faba where the Lusamine is and it cuts from Gladion’s glaring to Hau’s goofy smile, like he’s really happy that he gets to beat the shinx out of someone

Bede is simultaneously an edgy 14 year old boy, and a grandma. I will always be in awe of how the designers managed to pull that off and execute it in a character. I love him
As a pokemon shield player, let me tell you a bit about Avery. He is like Klara, he is jealous of you and is willing to cheat to win. The differences between those 2 is that Avery isn’t as toxic as Klara, but still a jerk towards you. It’s obvious that Avery specializes in psychic types. Avery does move puns (example: “My *Future Sight* must be off!”), and Avery didn’t photoshop his league card
Bro I didn't even know Avery was a guy lmao.
@@khalidmohammad9949 SAME- 💀
@@khalidmohammad9949 haha I'm a Pokémon shield player and when I found out that Avery was referred at as an he I was in shock💀💀💀
I call Avery 1000 IQ Doug Dimmadome
Isn’t he also severely disliked by his family?
Gen 3 Wally and Gen 6 Wally are different characters in my opinon.
In ORAS, after you beat him in Mauville City, he just kinda vanishes. When you take a look at the gym signs from Flannery’s gym onwards, Wally is a certified trainer before you even enter the gym. I see why you dislike Wally but I strongly disagree, at least with Gen 6.
plus the "secret" battle against him in the battle mansion with his competetiv trained team
@@RayTheLukas yes
i honestly would have preferred a non-competitive version of that team in victory road since you have the national dex by that point and most trainers on victory road use natdex pokemon
He even shows up at the end of victory road and the battle can be hard if you are not prepared for it.
I feel like you just never read Brendan’s dialogue, and just kind of assumed he was just “boy May” since the other alternate gender rivals from the other Gens aren’t that much different from each other.
Gen 3 was the only Gen that actually tried giving different personalities for whatever gender character you didn’t pic that became your rival.
While May does give “girl next door” vibes and is generally pretty friendly around you, Brendan is a bit of a… (I don’t mean this in a “Twitter”-sounding way)… sexist?
And that’s not a bad thing, it’s a character trait he learns and grows from the more you beat him. Most of his dialogue is the same as May’s, just reworded to come off more boyish, but he also makes jabs at you for being a girl and comes off as cocky, like he knows better and has to be the one to show you the ropes.
I guess it can be interpreted as him being more teasing than mean, since he does respect you and congratulate you for becoming Champion by the end, but May didn’t have any of those jabs, so that stands out to me.
Heck, here are a couple of his quotes:
“Moved in next door, right? I didn't know that you're a girl. Dad, Prof. Birch, said that our new next-door neighbor is a Gym Leader's kid, so I assumed you'd be a guy.”
“As for me… I'm considering challenging Norman, the Gym Leader of Petalburg. Unlike you, , your dad looks like he really is tough.”
“Oh, what's the matter? Don't have any confidence in your Pokémon?”
“I went out all over Hoenn and checked out Pokémon. You can thank me for getting the National Mode Pokédex. Yep, you're lucky, !”
(May’s dialogue is more humble and says “Eheheh! It's so cool that even my Pokédex is getting updated! It's because you went out and caught so many Pokémon, !”)
In ORAS this is toned down and he’s much nicer. His dialogue is reworded so he “hoped his new neighbor would be a guy” so it’d be easier to make friends, and now he has a crush on May when he gets flustered asking to take her back to Petalburg after you beat Flannery.
He also has a secret thing for Pokémon Dolls too and gets embarrassed when he’s asked about it at Lilycove too, it’s kind of endearing. In the original games, he’s comes off like he’s rolling in his eyes like, “No, I’m not here to buy *dolls.*”
Sorry for the long comment, just wanted to make my point since I played as May in the Gen 3 games!
idk
i never play as may but i don't think he's sexist
ngl i think ur taking it a tad bit to far
@@kingdoingstuff Yeah that’s why I said I didn’t wanna use the word, especially in the reach-y Twitter way people use it nowadays
I only used it cause I didn’t know what else to call it, he makes some jabs at you specifically cause you’re a girl but grows out of it overtime
@@komarunaegi7460 I just looked through Brendan's quotes and I see where you're getting from in Littleroot and Lavaridge I see how he is kinda judgemental and assuming
Like how he says May doesn't look strong
In oras he's only like that in Littleroot and he's toned down quite a bit to he point where he really likes may
@@kingdoingstuff Yeah exactly. This was only really a thing in RSE but very toned down in ORAS
I find this really funny because (keep in mind that I only played ORAS and at a super young age, so I don’t remember much. I’m just going off of your comment) in the game, he’s “boyish” and dislikes “girly” things, and like wished you were a guy or something. but his manga counterpart, Ruby, is LITERALLY SUCH A GIRLY BOY (his looks, attitude, even dream can be classified girly.. but I don’t wanna say that because that’s gender stereotypes).
One little thing about Hop. He didn't really gave up about Pokémon Battles. He just realised that he doesn't have to be like his brother Lion to be recognised to be as strong as him. But you can still battle him at the Pokémon League and the Galarian Star Tournament on the DLCs, so he still enjoys battling, and maybe he's able to balance Pokémon Battles and investigation, as other Gym Leaders do with Pokémon Battles and their jobs.
There’s a lot more depth to N and his Pokémon than you give him. He’s embodies “you have to be part of the system to fix/break the system” and he doesn’t keep the Pokémon longer than he needs them, not keeping them longer than necessary so they could be free
This is way Pokemon Masters is the greatest spin-off ever, as it gives all the main series characters chances to not have the personality of wet cardboard (looking at you, Kalos)

And the irony is hilarious
He didn't realize that, though?
The hop and wally slander got me so pressed 💀
5:50 Silver has shoved / punched the main character before so Hugh isn't the only one on this list
My hot take: Hop is the best character in sword and shield excluding dlcs. In this dry ass story of gen 8, Hop's story that he will always be a Leon's shadow is well-written and emotional
No
I kind of understand him now after constantly having my ass handed to me in tcg.
honestly. and i relate to him so much as a younger sibling with accomplished older siblings! one of the best rivals, imo
Damn right he is
Yes! I hav found my Hop loving people! I was so worried I wouldn’t! Hop goes on such a journey, it’s hard for him to accept loss because he’s got so much pressure on his shoulders to be like his big brother, who’s the freaking CHAMPION, when Bea ends up hurting him to the point where he wants to give up, Hop does one final battle with us and accepts his defeat, saying that he’ll get stronger, and you know what? He does! He helps us defeat the legendary and the evil mayor in the story! I love and stan Hop! Im now a person that likes friendly rivals, but Hop makes me so happy that he was the reason I replayed Sword and Sheild, simply because I love his growth and am happy to have participated in it!
It’s a hot take but I prefer the more friendly rival like Serena and Nemona. Ones who will put me up other then put me down.
Same, Nemona is my fave but I also have a soft spot for Silver because of his cute smile in Masters
@@billcipher8645 Silver eventually grows into a friendly rival. We get the best of both worlds with Silver. He grows from a prick to someone who respects the player and I absolutely love him for it.
I just like good character development. Either start out nice and end up like a jerk or vice versa
I kinda prefer Nemona over Serena. Serena seems more coddling for the sake of it, which does get annoying after a bit, but Nemona is just so excited to fight you as you get stronger that she's hard for me to dislike. Add in the fact that I love super competitive girls when it comes to Pokemon, and I was hooked.
@themasterblaze7563 Saw a video who hated on my man Silver because he's a dick to start which apparently turned the person off for the rest of the game. Even went so far as to say his fans only like him because he's edgy. Which isn't completely wrong, but Silver fans love the fact that he goes from being edgy to really understanding that the way he treats Pokemon is wrong, and strives to be better because of it.
I wish Nemona at one point actually used her champ team instead of what she build up alongside you going up to champ rank. I wonder what she used to get it done before, even though Geeta is the champ so she could probably use an army of sleeping slakoths to beat her
yes sameee, hopefully in dlc part 2
hop was one of my favorite rivals from across the games. I loved his story about him getting over what bede said to him and eventually coming to the conclusion that battling wasn't for him and switching paths to become a pokemon researcher at the end. I might be biased because sw/sh were my first pokemon games that I could fully understand (since I wasn't 3 at the time of playing them) but I just wanted to spread some hop positivity.
Finally someone that doesn't bully him
Same, Hop is just a sweetheart
Hop slander really has to stop. I also understand how it is to have a successful older brother so I relate to Hop even more
I grew up with SwSh, so I'm kinda biased, but dadgummit, if I hear someone say Hau is better than Hop one more time-!
@user-bx6vi3sj3c as someone whose favourite games are SWSH and USUM, comparing them just... doesnt seem right. they're very different characters
What’s funny is that Trever is one of the only rivals who actually mastered mega evolution which is super cool
About N, except for the final takeover he only ever uses pokemon that you can catch, where you fight him and releases them after. He essentially only catches these Pokemon to test the person he sees as his hero counterpart.
And i will put the thing about tram Plasma like this: They had to use the stones to destroy the stones.
“GO SEE A DOCTOR” i’m convinced he will make me laugh, every upload
I do my best
@@TheRogueRenegade :D
Nemona canonically is a borderline stalker always conveniently at the gym you're about to enter (in an open world game) and when questioned she gets flustered and runs off I think the yandere vibes were an intentional joke by the devs she's a very fun character
Controversial opinion: I freaking love Barry. He is basically an ADHD caffeinated squirrel with too much ambition and a bit of an ego, and I find all that endearing. I like that Barry is friendly to you while still thinking he's obviously superior. I feel like he's a really good combination between a friendly rival and a jerk rival, and I enjoy fighting him and running into him. I think I like him so much more because I played diamond, not platinum, and best I can tell, he's way less annoying, and more entertaining in DP than Platinum. Never played BDSP, so I can't speak for that.
@@giraffegirl1691 ikr i just miss not seeing him bumping into him whenever you reach a gym hes also dum to fight he accepts you are stronger than him gradually thats just character development hes like a best friend eager to catch a legendary pokemon in the beginning taking you with him shows that he appreciates you too
“To c tier he goes only because he knows his place”
Wonder who’s next- **THUD**
You're just trying to trigger me with all your Wally slander.
*Kicks down the front door with an angry Ursaring next to me* AND I NEVER SAID IT DIDN'T WORK!!!
You honestly deserve so much more views to your content, I’ve been binging for days!
Thank you so much! I’ll do my best to keep uploading more
Same lol
Can't believe we went in chronological order, covered Silver, and then called Hugh the only one to straight up punch someone. Silver can attack you directly once in the OG games and twice in the remakes, and you never had it coming. Not even when you stood there and shamelessly eavesdropped on his dad abandoning him.
I feel like I heard somewhere that Gamefreak stopped doing jerk rivals for like 6 gens because of more space for game data. In the older games, they had less room to get character across, and picked a louder rival personality (jerk) to get the concept across, but once they had more space for... idk... extra text boxes, they felt like they could convey a sense of rivalry without having to make characters antagonistic. Which is a neat idea in theory but in practice it's way easier to make an antagonistic character feel like i have a narrative reason to fight them. Some of the friendly rivals do feel like they're genuinely just trying to help push you to be stronger, but a lot of them feel like pushovers that the game is making youfight just for the sake of repeatedly beating up the same person.
Whenever I play BW2 and I see Hugh lunch that Team Plasma grunt I burst out laughing and I don't know why
How the fuck is Marnie better than Hop?
Hop had a whole character arc about realizing that he can be good on his own while all Marnie does is not wanna be the gym leader and she can't smile.
I honestly really love Hop. I get it feels stupid that he gets so bummed out after losing to Bede and him flat out stopping battling entirely after the SWSH post game, but looking at it from his perspective- I can see why. He’s the younger brother of Galar’s #1 trainer and obviously being a rookie trainer whose related to the Champion, naturally that’s gonna come out it’s some pressure on your shoulder and inside you’re going to have a lot of doubts.
Also I think the reason he ran crying from Bede was because he was taunting him really bad. Like say what you will, Bede knows how to rile people up.
I will not tolerate Hop slander.
Barry should be A tier in my opinion. He got humbeled by jupiter and trained to get his revenge. And he has in my opinion very fun tean.
Hop and belle should be A too, they have the best character evolution in the rivals
Hugh throwing hands makes him the best.
But also i relate haha.
Now updated with Kieran & Carmine. Carmine is probably A-tier, but Kieran is definitely S-tier
Ok so my s tier rivals are
Hau, hop, Barry, Cheren and nemona
My man
Good list, but respectfully disagree on Hop
I can see why, i still think hes cool
I love hop for no reason whatsoever.
We are wally's Rival... wally doesn't count as rival
Hop is not that bad. People are overhating. It does not make sense to fault him for losing when literally every Rival loses to you on principle cause you would not be able progress the game, (except with Blue). He got much farther as a trainer than Bianca, May/Brenden, (they literally give up halfway through the game & in OG RSE you never get fight a fully evolved starter from them), the Kalos Rivals, and SM Hau, (not USUM Hau). Also he is the only other Rival, other than N, to canonically have been personally chosen, (Gladion just ran off with Silvally), by and catch a Boxart Legendary Pokemon. Also so what he quit being a active trainer to become a professor assistant? So did Gary in the anime after his first & ONLY loss to Ash,( hey if you are going to judge based upon anime appearances then its only fair). It just becomes a bonus for him especially since it continues the legacy that his great grandfather Professor Laventon started.
But Let's Go's rival adopted the orphaned Cubone in Lavender town ;-;
He even uses it as a Marowak on his Champion team ;-;
Why you have no heart?🥲
Im a new but big fan of your videos. Hilarious and well put-together, keep up the good work.
Thank you!! I will do my best
May by far is my favorite rival for the fact that Oras sets up this sort of childhood friend bond that truly reminds me of childhood when I played ruby as my first game it feels full circle or complete for may to be my rival. Though scarlet and violet have by far some of the best characters and rivals because the storylines that are tied together are just so beautiful but for me gen 3 is just my childhood and I’d be happy I’d gen 9 was my first game because of how inspiring it was just a truly great adventure.
Hop: Is not good at battling and makes a career 180 based on showing no desire for his new career choice.
Wally: Has a respiratory disorder and starts off shy but still doesn't stop trying to be a great trainer.
The line between Characters and Rivals gets blurry for me, but I'd say:
Blue cause he's DA GOAT,
Hugh cause he's a badass Sasuke but not pushing it and is sweet (plus he decked someone canonically lol),
Nemona cause she's that good that she made a NEW team to start of from scratch just to be even with us and is still basically a normal girl under her crazy battling needs,
Gladion cause he's Sasuke incarnate but dope on his own terms,
Hau cause he's very capable on walking by our side yet pushes us to beat him (I know that feeling cuz I had a friend that I called a rival),
and Sliver cause I really hate his guts and only want to beat him :)
Hugh is more of a partner than a rival, as he has no intention of defeating the champion, only getting his sister's Purrloin back with your help
I also think its really funny how Bede gets literally disowned right infront of you’re face.
Something I’ve noticed about the rivals was that, with each passing game, the rivals felt less and less like rivals, and that sucks, because I want to be able to have a genuine rival
Barry is how I decided to do starters, I can only see Dawn with a Piplup thanks to the anime, but infernape just fits him with how much of a monkey he can be
Poor Avery.
I think he's kinda cool.
People just hate him for being the Shield guy.
Me: "Mom can we get Blue"
Mom: "We have Blue at home"
Blue at home: Trace
Hop to be fair was mimicking Leon style and not doing his own style but came through against on the darkest day granted hops Pokémon is predictable and you just type match he just needed to be himself not mimic Leon
Ngl I didn't even know the Let's go rival's name...might've been because I named him "Garydos"
Hop is a really gooooooood rival
This man has some balls to do this
With Hop I just feel like the rival like at a point I just felt like a dick.
In a little bit of defense for Wally in the remakes, they do show you his determination that much more, as speedster pointed out. It’s the way that he throws his Poké ball.
At the beginning, he kind of just flings it nervously but near the end, you just see him throw it with the most confidence, sure he knows he won’t win, but nothing is stopping him from at least trying.
Then we get to the post game.
This motherfucker, went, I’m about to tear your throat out by giving an entire 6v6 team with EV, IV natures, relevant items and competitive move set, granted most players wanna see that because who the fuck plays through the battle Mayson but it’s a nice little reward… Plus that music!
2:15 - That’s what she wants you to think. After roughly the Route 110 fight, May seems to recognize how badly you outclass her as a trainer and tries to deflect her shortcomings by passive-aggressively admonishing you for mainly using your team for battle over nurturing them… she says when most of her onscreen appearances are her camping on a route and throwing Pokeballs at anything that moves till she runs out. Brendan by comparison just grows increasingly crestfallen at the fact that he fell behind but doesn’t chide you for it like May does.
Good guy Brendan
W you put N on S tier

Just a small theory about rivals that i have is that the reason why some seem so bland compared to others is that gamefreak probably puts more creativity into some characters than others. Maybe thats why people enjoy Klara more than Avery.
I hope this isnt true because that would also probably mean that they will start repeating material.
wally at C is a literal crime
have you ever thought that in reality, you were wally's rival? usually rivals would walk up to you, but wally was there and you are the obstacle in his path to victory road, also his team in the battle maison is pretty broken, potential to be a champion
-Magnezone with air balloon
-Talonflame with gale wings
-Garchomp with rough skin rocky helmet
-Gallade with galladite (of course)
-Azumarill with Huge Power
-Roserade (yeah roserade is just a bouquet of flowers)
Wally is honestly one of my favourite rivals but its still your opinion
Avery is pretty much the same as Klara.
He is jealous and cheats in the final battle by summoning Psychic Terrain( which is less threatening than Klara's toxic spikes)
I would rate him in low B tier
Ok imma say it, Calem is my favourite protagonist and Trevor is my favourite rival. Honourable mention to Silver and Barry you guys are awesome.
Yes I like Trevor, do we have a problem?
FINALLY someone who favors Calem as a protag
Brandon just gives off protagonist energy
While May is like that silly side character who happens to like the protag
X’cuse me I’m gonna shoot you for saying Hop is bad. (I’m biased since Sword was my first game. I’m 12.)
Yikes, you just put the male version of the same character 2 tiers below just because he’s not a girl
Surprised he didn't mention wally's victory road glow up
I really should've that's on me
Fun fact, in the manga Brendan is a fashionista (pokemon coordinator) and May lives in the woods but still Birch’s kid thats smarter than him. (Wally also ends up becoming a ninja but it isn’t funny).
Places Wally in C
ORAS: Hold Up
5:52 You said Hugh was the only rival to straight-up punch someone.
"Punch" I agree with, but if you talk to Silver west of Elm's lab in the original GSC, it's heavily implied that he kicks you. (HG/SS changed the sound effect to imply a push instead.)
Avery is pretty much the same. He gets his ass kicked, then tries to lie to keep you from joining the dojo you probably never intended to join... only for you to pop in anyway and make them look like an idiot. All they do is just hate you and try to sabatoge you trying to be better than you. Even in the end, their apology felt forced, and they deserve the ranking you gave them.
Avery deserves higher
Avery also isn’t as toxic as Klara and does move puns
@@makeeeveeacupcake ofc he's less toxic, he's not a poison type specialist :P
The comparison of Lear to the Oncler made me cackle 😂
"Lear looks like the Oncler" WHY DOES HE THOUGH 💀
Not going to lie your list is almost the same as how I would put them. For me it felt like Gladion was more Hau's rival than your own in Sun and Moon. With how they interacted with each other it felt your character was the third wheel whenever the two of them were talking with each other.
you can NOT talk down on my boy wally like that we all know that hes just secretly holding back his power so you can progress in the story
4:58 Plot twist: It was a hyper-realistic water gun
I honestly really liked Avery, he's basically Klara and Blue fused together. Having Klara's envy and Blue's cocky attitude, made him feel amazing to beat.
Rouge: HOP IS THE WORST!!
Zacian that hop gets in pokemon shield: allow me to introduce myself
You might be one of the few PokéTubers to actually play as his own gender. Nice. Respect.
bro didn't finish ORAS
I feel like you shouldve placed cheren in A/S teir. Early game he knew how to use items to his advantage, and was quite a challenge for me. He also told N to shut up as he talked to fast, which was pretty badass in my opinion, lmao. Completely agree on Wally, though.
silver and blue are classics good to see them at the top, imo the original stories are the best (and i say that without them even being my first game)
About N being a hypocrite, I feel like that’s the point at least when it comes to his methods especially since he’s the main antagonist of BW, I like how B2W2’s memory link gives us a scene in chargestone cave that shows how N is aware of how hypocritical it is to use pokemon to achieve the world he seeks and he shows remorse and regret for needing to do that which creates a great contrast to your final confrontation with him at his castle where he claims that he’ll do anything to achieve his goals even if it gets his friends hurt
This detail may seem minor but to me it’s the one thing that pushes him to being my favorite character in pokemon
Um dude you forgot about arven and penny! You mentioned nemona which they're all from same generation
Arven and Penny aren't rivals

@@MatiNuva1724 you fight them in the end of their own respective story part where they put they're all
@@jhonardpagala2119 does that make them rivals?
WHY WAS THIS SO ACCURATE THOUGH
My list
1. Hugh: Loved his backstory and character. He's the thing that recent rivals want to be but not only fail, but they do it so badly I'm disappointed
2. Silver: First actual rival for me. He made me want to beat him up at first but after learning his backstory wanted to take him to a psych and get him checked out.
3. Wally: The underdog of my top 3, but damn is he strong as heck. Sure he's victory road team is ....laughable at worst, but damn that Battle Maison team be making me look over my shoulder for Gale Wings Talonflame
4. Blue: He's more of jerk than Silver, but with a lot less baggage. His team is filled with some of my favourites tho, so that's a plus
5. Barry: Hyperactive and somewhat annoying, he's at least got some of the skills to back up his bark sometimes. But seriously Barry, why Rapidash when there are better fire types like Houndoom and Arcanine running around? His other picks are honestly really good and i like that he actually has the patience to get a Snorlax and Heracross
6. Bianca: In BW, N keeps going on and on about people mistreating Pokemon, which is kinda weird considering he (maybe) beat Bianca offscreen, who has a team filled with Max Happiness mons, and he somehow still questions that. She's only this low because I wouldn't classify her as a rival more as a friend. Still those Returns hit like a truck sending you to isekai
7. Cheren: I feel like they're reusing the Blue trope, but I do like that he often appears to help you in all the games he's appeared in. Same reason as Bianca as to why he is this low
8. May/Brendan: All I can say is, Battle under cycling road. Beyond that nothing memorable for me
9. Hau: More of a friend than a rival. Still got a good team tho
10. Gladion: Really edgy, really wanted him to have a bit more screentime, but I'll take what i get
11. The X and Y rivals: Need I say more?
Nemona, Hop, Marnie, Bede: I feel like they're reusing tropes from the previous games, but honestly these guys would be mid rank for me

Arven and Penny: Are we a joke?
Not a main series rival, but Ronald from Pokemon tcg was great. He's basically just a toxic tcg player. Sure hes a carbon copy of blue's story, but if you're gonna copy something, at least copy something good!
Another cool thing about Ronald is that he's not only tough, but the game actually progresses if he beats you! Losing to Ronald means you'll be dished out of the rare promo card that you wouldve won had you defeated him.
