For me, much the best way to start output is to develop Language Islands. These cover personal info such as family, work, language learning, home town, personal anecdotes etc, useful scenarios such as shopping and booking accommodation, and topics of interest such as your hobbies.
I set them up as scenarios, with dramatis, personae, stock phrases and questions, the key nouns, adjectives and verbs, and maybe an image or two to fire the imagination. I lay this out on a spreadsheet.
I then have conversations with myself acting out the scenarios. This can be farther enhanced with the old actor's trick of standing up and using exaggerated vocalisation and gestures, moving from spot to spot to represent the characters. This way all the output you learn is relevant and useful,
Once internalised you can refresh these anywhere - waiting for the bus, walking etc. They give you solid islands of safe and fluent language you can fall back on in the stormy seas of real-time conversations.

Yeah, I’ve thought about these too. Depending on what people want to do obviously, but massive amounts of input and starting output with islands would be a great combo for some

Always such great advice, Matt! Thank you! I'm currently learning Italian and one of the things that really helped me with pronunciation, was when I found a video talking about certain word groupings and the sounds that Italians skip over. We of course do this in English (all languages do) and it hadn't occurred to me that of course it would be the same in Italian! For example when we say "big cat" you'll realise that we actually don't pronounce the 'g' at the end of big and the 'c' at the start of cat. They sort of merge into one sound. There were a lot of word combinations in Italian where I kept stumbling over the end of the first word and the start of the next. I was trying to pronounce every single individual bit, without realising that Italians do the exact same thing as we do in English for certain sound groups. Fascinating and also a great lightbulb moment for my language speech fluidity!

Staring down 1,300 hours in Dreaming Spanish as of this comment and still haven’t started speaking. Not reason other than I don’t have a person with whom I can speak.
Talking to myself definitely IS obvious, but I haven’t thought about it. 😅 Good call, Matt. I think I’ll leave my headphones in so I can do this around the grocery store without someone calling the police.

It’s a great way to get the ball rolling. With a good tutor it’s also a lovely way to spend a hour

When you said "¡No puede pasar!", I laughed at your dog's reaction. The laugh scared my cats. Animals know we're all nuts.
Good post as always. Thanks for your efforts.

Hello Matt, those are all nice things to do and I'm doing some of them. Unfortunately I don't haven't a pet that could act like a viewer 😅, but that scene was fantastic....your dog has used well his money !😊
    Thank you!

Wow did you say 900 hours of exposure to the language? 😮 That is quite a bit. Your brain would definitely perceive the patter and rhythm of the language. Spanish is my second language and you’re doing pretty well.

Great tips here though I’m light years away from speaking (100 hours mostly Dreaming Spanish). You mentioned LingQ. I haven’t managed to find a good way to use it yet. How about a video showcasing how you make use of it?
