- Red Sector A by Rush, an acoustic cover performed by Mike Massé. I'm performing as a special guest at Rushfest in Criciúma, SC, Brazil on April 12 - 13, 2024! Get tickets here or use the QR code at the end of the video: topedindoingressos.com.br/e/r... That (April 12th) also happens to be the 40th anniversary of the release of "Grace Under Pressure."
Liner Notes: I listened to Geddy Lee's audiobook "My Effin' Life" this past January (2024) while driving around Germany by myself in a rental car, performing 10 shows in 18 days. He recounts how his parents were Jewish and met as teenagers in a Nazi work camp during World War II, and how both later survived the Auschwitz death camp. They were reunited after the war, were married in one of the camps, and later immigrated to Toronto in 1947. I recommend Geddy's autobiography for many reasons, but hearing him recount his parents' story is reason enough.
Geddy talks about how he had spoken to Neil Peart (Rush's lyricist and drummer) about his parents' story, and how Neil used some of it as inspiration for the lyrics to "Red Sector A." Specifically, Geddy's mom had expressed the sentiment that they believed that they were the last people left alive, because otherwise, they would have been rescued. She was in disbelief when British troops arrived to liberate the camp.
"Are we the last ones left alive?
Are we the only human beings to survive?"
Knowing the full (and true) context for this song makes it all the more powerful. Read more about Geddy's family story here:

I heard this song a few weeks ago and thought it might be something I could arrange acoustically. I began with an approximation of the guitar intro played an octave lower. I use my Roland GR-55 guitar synthesizer for the synth string pad you hear following along with the guitar part. I have a GK-3 midi pickup.
I play "four on the floor" with my Wild Dog Bunyip stomp pedal throughout, and I have a microphone under a tambourine played with my right foot.

wow, that sounds great Mike thank u, Rush greets from The netherlands
Would love to be there. Can’t imagine air fare from the Midwest
Absolutely amazing book! It’s so nice when your childhood heroes surpass your expectations! Beautiful job!
I was at that show! Congratulations Mike! You are welcome whenever you come to Brazil! 👍🏻🙂🎸
If you are a Rush fan (or even if you aren't), I highly recommend you read "My Effin' Life," Geddy Lee's autobiography. If you are a Rush fan, you've probably already read it. 👍 I listened to Geddy read the audiobook version. Super cool.
That Chapter 3 was painful but necessary. Great job painting Chapter 3 for us Mike.
Geddy’s book was fantastic.
Just finished it yesterday. Funny, eye-opening and heartbreaking. RIP Neil Peart, the greatest lyricist ever.
Agreed. Listening to Geddy read his story was powerful!
I thoroughly enjoyed it. I caught Geddy on his book tour in Denver with Matt Stone interviewing.
I have a fun young readers book out titled, Three for One. Rush fans have a lot of things to relate to in the story. 🙂Alex has a copy. I’d love to get it out to everyone to enjoy.
Such a moving book ❤️
Grace Under Pressure was a great album!
One of my favorite Rush songs. I sob almost every time I listen to it. Thank you Mike, I needed to cry today.
Very nice. As a lifelong Rush fan I am very impressed.
Doing Neil’s words, Geddy’s singing, and Alex’s Guitar proud all at once Amazing!
If someone had told me you could remove Neil's drums, Alex's guitars, or Geddy's bass from a Rush song and it still sound good I would have laughed. This is phenomenal 😮
Oh my Sweet Lord ... another beautiful interpretation of an incredible Rush song. Well done!!❤
Thanks!
You are a tremendous singer, and you've also shown me a way to play this that hadn't occurred to me. Nice.
Wow....One of the most intimate and personal songs ever written... Mike, really well done...from the tone of that ovation guitar to tonal inflection on your vocals, you really knocked it out of the park!! Not many out there dare cover Rush (and get away with it) but you really bring it to the mix....BRAVO!!!!
Wow !
Mike, what an amazing cover.
Thanks! Please help spread it. 👍
Thanks Mike for another great job on one of my first favorite songs from Rush. If you ever make it back to the Carolina area please try to come to Spartanburg S.C. I would love to get to see you.
💚💛🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷. Nós estamos esperando por você aqui no Brasil. 👏👏👏👏👏
Awesome job Mike! That's one of my favorite Rush songs and definitely no joke trying to do that as a solo performer! The vocals alone would be a real stretch for most singers!
What is there to say..... Mike Masse just another well performed music video. 5 👍👍👍👍👍!
Great work Mike! This is gonna kill at Rush Fest!
Well done Mike! Love the way you balance the percussion, and work in the strings. You're a 1 man, 4 man band! :)
If you remember the guy who talked to you a few years back in St. Louis about your cover of Mystic Rhythms, that was me. This is up there with that cover in terms of a fantastic reinterpretation of the original into an acoustic setting. Well done!
I just came across this video. Absolutely incredible!!!! The singing was so emotionally driven and in perfect pitch. I absolutely loved your interpretation of the song on the acoustic guitar . Thank you, Mike, for this wonderful rendition and the gift that it brings
Great job Mike! It's funny how I hear just a hint of Chris De Burgh in your voice. Wonderful!
Is this unbelievable on every level. Bravo sir.
Lifelong Rush fan. That was amazing!
I wanted Xanadu but this will do haha!!! 😂 Great job Mike!!!
Really looking forward to it Mike !!!!
Very nice! As a Rush fan and a singer/guitar player, I recognize and applaud the challenge that this song presented you - not just playing guitar and singing in a difficult register, but keeping rhythm with both feet is impressive. You nailed it, well done!
Excellent song and an excellent cover
Hey Mike! This is an incredibly awesome cover of this song! I shared it with all my Rush friends! 🤘😎
🎸
Thank you for covers like this. It has helped to encourage me to learn more on guitar
Lifelong Rush fan here. This is soooo nice !!! Love all your Rush covers but this one’s epic. Love from India🤘🏽
Good luck in Brazil. You've come a long way from the pizza joint! Love Rush and have seen them 4 times over my life. Caress of Steel is my favorite.

What a beautiful rendition of tragic time in history.
Love to see you do Rush from this era, Mike. So good!
I have spent most of my life admiring Neil Peart for his drumming. I appreciate the acoustic covers you do that allow a focus on his lyrics. Great work!
Great cover Mike, all the best!
Jeez...21hrs cant go by fast enough!

Great song Mike and you did a fantastic job as always. You never, EVER disappoint! ✌😎
Damn fine cover.
Great vocal.

Love it. Well done! What a great tribute to RUSH
Great song and powerful performance
Beautifully done!!!
Thanks, Joel!
I don't typically like acoustic rush covers of their electric work, but this was great. Your voice is perfect for this and the delivery was poignant. Thank you
REALLY strong vocals! Awesome rendition, Mike.
Outsanding interpretation.
Wow! Vraiment bon !
Awesome job Mike with the acoustic version.
Well done, Sir. Rush on!😎👍
You really captured the heart of this song, thank you!
Mike, I stumbled upon this by chance and so glad I did! This is absolutely AMAZING ❤. I am a long time Rush fan and I believe Geddy, Alex and Neil (RIP), would love this acoustic version too. Thank you for doing it! Rock on brother!
Great job! Love the setup
Is it possible to be possessed by music? The way you transform into both yourself and the artist, is remarkable. And your arrangements allow ones mind to fill in the blanks. It was incredible seeing you in Clermont, Florida as well as seeing the effect you had on the audience. If you could have heard the gasps of excitement and awe in the audience. You are magic ❤.
So good man!
Great voice! Great performance.
You are my favorite musician on RUclips man. You cover all my favorite songs, and sometimes do them better. You cover songs I don’t like and turn them into songs I do like
Fantastique mike.
👏👏
Wow Mike! One person covering all three amazing band members! We would love to see you do the vocals with one of the many good Rush tributes bands. Most of them have great guitarists and pretty good drummers, but none of the vocalists sound like Geddy. Geddy said it best, "Sometimes even I have a hard time sounding like Geddy Lee!"
Great cover of one of my favorite Rush songs! Amazing
Excelent. Thanks for your music
Dude . Amazing . I wasn't expecting that . wicked
Good god!! Is there anything you cant absolutely SMASH!? This was nothing short of incredible.
Wow, that was freaking amazing 👏,
Sounds FANTASTIC! Great Job!
Beautiful. Thank you for sharing :)
Great job, Mike!
Excellent!
I quoted Neil Peart in my high school yearbook. You have entered the Twilight Zone beyond this world. Strange things are known. Use the key unlock the door see what your fate might have in store. Come explore your dreams creation, enter this world of imagination.
