The ULTRAKILL community's "weapon-meta" problem

- Elitism has always been present at varying levels within the ULTRAKILL community, and I don't think we'll see an end to it any time soon. Considering this is the case, here are some of my thoughts on one particular area that I find particularly troublesome.

I've genuinely come to the the conclusion that there really aren't any objectively bad weapons in ULTRAKILL. I wouldn't say my credentials are much to write home about, but I *did* reach Wave 81 on the Violent Cyber Grind with my fairly "non-meta" playstyle and arsenal. My enjoyment and damage output is far greater with the Screwdriver than the Electric Railcannon, and the same can be said about my usage of the regular Sharpshooter over something like the Alt Piercer. Does that mean I get to say what weapons are "superior" to anyone who hasn't made it into the top 100 on the leaderboard? Of course not!
@DumpsterManTV had some great insight on the issue as well, in my opinion!
Quote: I find the community at large has trouble presenting these conversations in a constructive way and that's where the issue lies... ULTRAKILL is far from a "solved" game, but everyone seems to think the way they did it is "correct" because of confirmation bias. So instead of asking why you chose to approach something differently, instead it's "I can't believe they used the Screwdriver lmao". The unwillingness to adapt, and be creative and inquisitive about playstyle in this game is gonna hurt some peoples' enjoyment of it, and a big portion of the community unfortunately perpetuates this "I'm right, you're wrong" mindset.
both you and dumpster man are some of my favourite video essayists, so it’s awesome seeing you two have similar opinions on this topic!
i think you should remember, though, that at one point the screwdriver's maximum damage was just its base damage of a bit over 10, even if you punched it.
people are closeminded often. a lot of the community seems slow to accept the screwdriver's new power and a little *too* critical of various pistol arrangements, but one weapon i still believe needs a buff is the blue nailgun.
im not trying to say this from a "its bad dont use it" standpoint, im saying this from a "i want it to be good because its not." the damage that the attractor nail actually outputs is literally less than half of the overheat nailgun and attractor saw; it actually just lacks the numbers to be useful. it's potential saving grace, the nailbomb, which theoretically has the potential to out damage a whole sawtrap by multiple times over, has code which makes it incredibly inconsistent even if you can pull it off. which, by the way, ive tried: its harder than you might expect, because explosions blow away your nails.
i cant speak for all nailgun haters but i think it would be awesome if it were as powerful as sawblades. i think it would be awesome if slabsman were comparable to marksman. but like. they arent, and i think it's counterproductive to pretend they are.
@@Lottchen621I’ve actually been a Screwdriver user for quite some time, even when it was in its unbuffed, drill-punchless state! Its base properties were more than reason enough for me to utilise it, and I managed to even get to Wave 121 in the Cyber Grind with its help.
Same goes for my reasoning on using the regular Blue Nailgun; its highest potential dps may not match up to using saws, but it’s the perfect weapon to use while approaching enemies for parries. Parrying a Malicious Face’s projectiles while blasting it with the accurate Blue Nailgun is light work, for instance!
I have nothing against actively asking for changes to weapons that the majority of the community think are underwhelming, but I also believe someone else put things quite well in this comments section: buffs in the past didn’t make “bad” weapons “good”. Rather, they made “good” weapons “great”. And, the thing that separates a “great” weapon from a “good” one is just how flexible it is in a variety of situations, rather than straight damage numbers.
At least from what I can tell, buffs and changes simply show up in order to help give somewhat niche weapons more general options throughout gameplay; the Screwdriver is the obvious one to point at, but the Freezeframe’s charged-rocket is a great example too!
In the mean time, I just feel that genuinely playing to a weapon’s innate strengths is much more productive than echoing sentiments of “this weapon doesn’t work for me, so it should totally suck for everyone”, wouldn’t you agree? It’s simply the cherry on top when a weapon does receive a buff!
I love the blue nailgun over sawblade literally just because the sawblade kills so easily it's kinda boring
@@EreNyn3 i suppose i can get behind that :)

@@nevinmyers1245 nah, you can parry it into another big enemy, and parry it onto another enemy from a Maurice corpse. This gives +PARRY style points and can be used as long as there is a heavy type enemy in the room.
@@Green_The_Gamer I just tested it in 1-1 with cheats on. A screwdriver punch on maurice gives the +BIG FISTKILL bonus and 225 style. A screwdriver punch on cerberus gives +DISRESPECT and 60 style. A screwdriver punch on a radiance 10 schism(no extra style for killing it, no extra style for its size) only gives 20 style. For comparison, a projectile boost on that same schism gives about 250 style and a parry gives 100 style.
tldr the screwdriver does give some style but it seems to only be from punching with the feedbacker and the style bonuses that come with it(you also don't get +PARRY because punching the screwdriver is not a parry, much like how projectile boosting is not a parry)
edit: I just realized you specified punching the screwdriver from a maurice corpse. I tested this too and it did not give +PARRY.
I thought the screwdriver was terrible
Until I realised that punching the screw out of a Maurice kills it instantly, and that you can punch the screw into another Maurice and kill that one instantly also, and you can keep doing it

Honestly, I agree with basically everything.
Now, I used to think that some ULTRAKILL weapons were not worth putting in my slots, but after experimenting and learning more about the ULTRAKILL arsenal, and over my 260 hours (not to flex) of playing the game, I can say that I have found use for BASICALLY every weapon (Although I am still trying to find out how to make slab marksman fun right now by experimenting, lol). Even if it that use for said weapon was just for fun, not being practical, I didn't really care. As long as I could style on enemies how I wanted to, I was bringing the weapon. Like stated by Eren before, ULTRAKILL is about that expression and playing the game in a way that you can enjoy it the most.
Trust me, if you do not experiment with every single weapon, you won't be enjoying ULTRAKILL as much as others.

I noticed that I basically never shoot coins raw with the revolver(i always coin punch or railcoin or charge shot) so it doesn't even matter which fucking marksman I use.
correct me if i’m wrong, but i think alt marksman’s coin charge is a bit longer? idrk that’s what i’ve been told
@@proguyisaprorlly4949i dont think so, alt marksman just do double damage to one enemy. i dont think it alters the coin refill charge time
@@TheCapitalWanderer Small correction, coins add 0.5 damage to each hitscan of the alt revolver. The alt revolver fires two hitscans of 1.25 damage, so this increases damage from 2.5 to 3.5. Splitshots add another hitscan, dealing 5.25 damage total.
For comparison sake, the default marksman deals 8 damage total on a spllitshot that hits a weak point on both enemies(Though getting 8 damage is unlikely since most enemies with weakpoints have less than 4 health anyway)
@@TheCapitalWanderer Also you're right the coin charge time is unaffected

Whenever I see a new player for example stream ULTRAKILL, I despise people who join and start saying "do this, don't use that, swap weapons more" and so on. I like helping new people (who want tips from others, partially as a replacement for having to read weapon info manually) just like most other people, but I always focus on showing people not what they SHOULD do but what they CAN do, teaching them interesting game mechanics which they would otherwise never find out about and then watch the smile on their face face and/or hear the happiness in their voice as they finish off a room with a coin punch combo'd into coin shot, do their first slam storage or oneshot a Cerberus in sandbox by a clean 2 coin coinadding railcoin
Exactly.

I know it pains to watch a person play dumb, but when I first got ultrakill I spammed slams on crowds and used piercer alt fire up until I got shotgun I started getting better.

Isnt “swap weapons more” just a different way of saying “experiment with your weapons more”. Which is a good thing no?
@@daktotathecolossus7404 I think the idea is that they never say _why_ you should swap weapons, just that you should. Showing people what weapons variety can do is more effective than just telling them to use weapon variety.

You know shit's bad when people complain about people not using "meta" stuff in a singleplayer game. Really disheartening that the community of such a sick game is so garbage to the point that so many different content creators are calling it out
Its one of the worst communities ever
it doesn't matter, there's absolutely no need to put a bad name on a product hakita and co. worked so hard on just because of a hyperfixation, the internet does this again and again over some pretty easily avoidable parts of a community

@@summitier22it’s definitely a lot harder for content creators to avoid this side of the community, and i’d know considering how long i’ve been following people like eren.
i agree that it’s no good to overgeneralise a fanbase, but it’s a lot easier for the majority of us to say “just ignore the toxic people” than it is for the people who actually receive the brunt of that toxicity.

@@razeguy9639oh it's not close to the worst, but it is starting to get there
I like the video, but to make something clear:
The reason people are making fun of the "jar of mayo" is because he fundamentaly doesn't understand what you essentially said. His rhetoric is that the game is bad because the game doesn't force you to play one way, and played exclusively using the piercer to show how "boring" the game "really is" since it didn't force him, and was being really snooty about it the whole time.
To be clear: people don't really care in this case about the fact that he's using the revolver, they do for his bad argument.
And that's not to say there's not toxic fans out there policing people's playstyles, just this one case.
I never liked the screwdriver, but it turns out, I just didn't know what it could do. I was browsing RUclips and saw a video where some guy killed the swordsmachine pair with only the screwdriver, and now I use it all the time. This game is about experimentation, not elitism.
Thank you for this. The amount of flak I've gotten for using the default piercer is unreal, and it's really strange that we've got this many meta-sheep in a game about player expression.
I love alt piercer just bc of how satisfying it is to beam, but sometimes I swap to normal just for funsies
Genuine question, why you do prefer default piercer? For me the dps is just too low. But I also use alt marksman so ig anything that doesn't do 2 billion damage doesn't fit my playstyle lol
@@SomeCowguy I use it because I don't really use the alt-fire on it so a better one with slower recharge is fine by me.

What even happened???
@@sunbleachedangel so, ever since the P2/5S update you can summon lightning (in 5-2 and 5-4), by attaching a magnet or a screwdriver onto a enemy.
That lightning is considered a hitscan, just like primary and secondary fires of revolvers' and railcannons'. (Basicly, it can interact with coins)
The last thing, is that after a coin gets punched, it briefly bounces up above the enemy it has hit.
You sum all of this up, and you get this wonderfull combo.
@@Kharci Cool, thanks!
mf just REDIRECTED LIGHTNING???
i 100% agree with you, and i wish i found this video sooner.
i'm primarily a speedrunner and theorycrafter, and while its significantly less common of a sentiment in that scene, its still definitely there. The main issue i've always had with this argument against certain weapons, or whatever it happens to be at the time, is that literally EVERY weapon has a place where its optimal. not good, not great, not second best, 100%, fully optimal.
slab marksman? many top swordsmachine kills use it, same with default piercer. blue and green nails? been seen used in a variety of 0-5, 6-2, and 4-4 instakills. default sawed on? 5-1 any%, its used in wave 2. screwdriver? top flesh prison kills use it, and i believe some panopticon ones do too.
are these options more niche than their counterparts? yeah, they are. But devaluing that niche, and especially ignoring the fact that people can intentionally play around that niche to get more value out of it more often, is completely ridiculous. Even if you actively ignore having fun, actively ignore personal preference, saying that certain weapons are unusable is objectively incorrect.
let people enjoy things.
@EreNym3 @1:50 So glad you mentioned DOOM Eternal in a video like this, because it's great starting to my problems with that game and it's idea of the "Fun Zone". It's because it becomes a one dimensional discussion on how to actually get people to learn and "Git Gud" at a game. They're focused doing things as, asking for restricting aspects of player movement mechanics, lowering weapon viability, op enemies with a focus on learning one specific strategy to learn, less player skill expression (or just player driven creative expression) in general, etc. What these ideas do is just does is make the game even less interesting to learn overall, even if I am a good player already. Why, it's because there isn't much get stuck into in comparison to a game like Ultrakill. In Ultrakill, meta, or even learning enemy specific isn't the focus, because it's more concerned about why would want to use the weapon in the first place. So the developers pushed for weapons had something going with them that you would learn about. Something that make want to swap to them, even if didn't all that much damage. Maybe it would be for another combo option, or general crowd control, even new movement option. The choice is yours as player and as the game starts to get harder the only stopping you from using the options you like is skill. DE feels it really doesn't matter how skilled you are, because if you know the setups, then the game is the same way every time... easy. There isn't a niche for some weapons that really needed one.
Ultrakill is about being stylish. Hakita expects us to use each weapon in different ways, not to look for the "best" weapon, and which we're comfortable with. So people who make fun of screwdriver and slabsman users should just piss off back to doom like you said.
I've found uses for screwdriver in lots of situations, and as for slabsman, it's a fun sidegrade I guess. It's not that practical, but it's really satisfying anyway.
i just dont like slab marksman because its... kinda useless on my arsenal
usually on the way i play i need coins either for streetcleaners, so i need a fast way to shoot them, or for ultraricoshots that doesnt matter the type of revolver you have, so i dont need it on my playstyle.
And i use the screwdriver a lot more on levels im not familiar in (for example when i played layer 7 and p-2) because its a reliable source of healing, i mean yeah you can get other forms of healing but when youre still learning how to play the level its way better to have the screwdriver on an enemy. I know about the buff it had and i really want to learn to use it because it looks SO COOL to punch the screwdriver between enemies
and also the rocket launcher with the new buff of blue rockets. I used to not use it that much other than flying and hitting enemies in the air.
I wouldnt go and tell people "hey stop using that!!!!" but thats my take on why i dont use those (and why i dont like the alt marksman before the buff)
I do agree, the playstyles of ultrakill are quite good. But something past “weapon meta” and stuff if even if you have 2 players who use the same weapons most of the time, you’ll still get 2 completely different playstyles. I use a lot of coins, but while a lot of people like charge backs and stuff I just flick instantly or do a split, I still use ultra coin but not as much as others do even though coins are still my bread and butter. I mostly just kinda instantly pull out the sharpshooter without coins or intent to bounce more that once, I pretty much never over pump the shotgun, I use the rail cannon extreme close to enemies instead of using it’s range, never use the the rocket launcher’s main shot and only use the SRS cannonball, this is all valid and love playing in this quick dps up close and personal playstyle. I once saw a guy who preferred using normal sharpshooter as his bread and butter, go him, that’s valid. Message: people have their own way of what they like to focus on, let them do so.
Screwdriver has the highest potential and highest skill ceiling of any weapon in the game. Yes, even more than the Marksman. I stand by this, and I've even moved screwdriver to my first railcannon slot to make me use it more.
real, infinite high damage chains with amazing health restoration? hecking awesome
the screwdiver hate is the most absurd cuz in literally every playthrough you see a person using it to demolish bosses, ppl who low rank it are way over their head over being able to pull off railcannon combos
thank you for being awesome and it shows because this video is awesome :)
even though i had the sisyphus fight fully memorized, the screwdriver carried me during my p-rank run
It is sad that some in the ULTRAKILL community feel the need to force people into playing the game "the right way",
one of the most genius design philosophies in the game is that it encourages experimentation and rewards creativity, discovering things such as using the hook with the cannon ball of the S.R.S. or mixing different weapons with the Marksman is what makes every playthrough different
Not everyone knows that you can use the railcannons with the coins
Not everyone knows you can parry your shotgun shells
And that's the point
i don't use the screwdriver often but it really came in handy for minos and sysyphus. one specific but genuinely useful niche is all i need.
This discussion makes me think, in my opinion, the default piercer is the weakest weapon in all of ULTRAKILL. Not "the worst" or "useless", the weakest.
It's the weapon we all start with, in the same way that we all start with the pistol in DooM or Wolfenstein 3D. It's the one that's supposed to give a baseline for what to expect in an ULTRAKILL gun, so all of the other guns can have the most wacky modes to use.
A Twitch streamer Albino used only the Slab Piercer for the last few acts of the game because his chat kept pestering him that he doesn't use enough weapons, very funny

The amount of times I see people who discourage other players for their weapon choice is so annoying, I understand we all have our opinions on the weapons in ultrakill, some are open to try weapons they didn't like before and some just don't like using some weapons so they unequipped those weapons, I have no problem with that. However there are the types of people who force their personal opinion on others just because they don't like the weapons they used them, I saw someone on discord once post a video of them using a screwdriver and very stylish clip as well, but one person said "Why do you use the screwdriver, you could've just used a nuke or something just overall better.".
Thank you for addressing this problem since it is a problem with the ultrakill community and I hope this video changes some people's minds, I love this game but some parts of the community really rubs on me the wrong way. Great vid and keep up the good work.
It’s the same problem that Doom Eternal also had when that had quite an active community. People also used to do a similar type of “tiering” with weapons and slagged off the weaker ones, without realising that a weapon’s power is not the entire reason to use it.
im always switching weapons and weapon variants to keep my style meter up because i cant do super stylish stuff and switching weapons all the time gives better bonuses, so i end up enjoying every weapon a lot of the time, especially in the cyber grind, where i can find a use for each weapon
It’s hard to make an ACTIVELY bad weapon choice in ULTRAKILL. I would know; I play without the Knuckleblaster equipped because I just don’t like it. I love and have a use for every weapon in the game. While some are more situational than others, they’re all fun to use. I actually really like using the screwdriver, specifically for keeping mindflayers in place when I don’t get a chance to instakill them, and maurice instakills. And while the firestarter I find to be pretty situational, I think it’s great against insurrections. I’ve also taken a liking to railcoining and chargebacks now that I’ve learned to do them properly.
i love the screwdriver although i do wish doing a +GIGA DRILL BREAK was as flashy as it sounds
plus there are ways to use the screwdriver that make it insanely useful, such as punching it to do massive damage when it is already in an enemy, or using it to lock a mindflayer in place.

@@TheCapitalWanderer yeah, Ive been playing ultrakill since the demo and I've had so many people tell that shit it's so funny

To use the games main inspiration as an example, DMC3 often has players deliberately using sub-optimal or "bad" moves as a means of self-expression and being stylish. Otherwise you'd simply have people jump-cancelling Helm Breaker over and over again, since while that's certainly optimal, it's also really bland and boring (See un-nerfed slab swapping as an example). If how you be stylish in Ultrakill involves you using pretty odd or "bad" choices, then more power to you, because thats simply how you've chosen to be stylish in a game that rewards style and self-expression.

core eject shotgun might have some cool high-skill tech, but outside of that it gets outclassed by pump charge shotgun and rocket launchers
screwdriver/malicious railcannons are good, but the painfully long cooldown shared between them forces picking 1 railcannon and sticking with it, and personally, it's the electric RC for me
knuckleblaster fist feels very niche and outright worse than feedbacker until stage 7-2 "Light Up The Night" thanks to guttermen
i absolutely love ultrakill, and i love absolutely every single weapon inside it. practically any time i load into a level i change up my alternate variants and sometimes even the orders of my weapons, like putting malicious first if i plan on nuking a lot. its a fun game no matter how you choose to play it, and even if i objectively play "best" when i'm using a pretty standard loadout, i always try and do something new. hell, sometimes i even change my weapon binds slightly to see if getting a new muscle memory would make my gameplay different
The screwdriver stops mindflayers from teleporting
I do think that harassing players is never acceptable, but I do wonder if the screwdriver would've still been buffed if people weren't vocal about how underwhelming it is.
I do hope options like Attractor Nailgun and Slab Marksmen get buffed in the future though. (Especially the first one, I'm really having a hard time figuring out what its use case is.)
considering hakita’s most famous quote involves him expressing how it’s a good thing that “we” aren’t making ultrakill, i think it’s safe to say that any buffs in general were coming sooner or later, one way or another.
the constantly evolving nature of ultrakill naturally requires some of the slightly more niche weapons to be tweaked into a more flexible state. Of course, players are able to determine which weapons are in that kind of state, but the true beauty of it all involves the actual changes that the devs cook up to introduce that flexibility!
Attractor Nailgun user here. I find it to be more versatile. Saws require setup and even then you have to manipulate enemies into hitting them. The nailgun(and yes, sawblade launcher) already has pretty low damage compared to other weapons so I'd prefer not to put so much time into a trap like that. I use the blue nailgun as a kind of "glue" when I'm switching to other weapons or need to finish an enemy off. It is not a staple weapon or even used very often, but it pulls its weight by being an easy and consistent source of damage.
slab marksman is getting a small buff soon, and the attractor nailgun is pretty good for dealing single target damage while the overheat nail is on cooldown.
in the next update, hitting a coin in split-shot state with ANY slab revolver resets the hammer time of ALL slab revolvers equipped
It's literally a game about style I never understood why people complain about non meta choices
GOOD NEWS! The alt marksman is getting buffed next update. I belive evrytime you shoot a coin it resets the hammer of all the slab varaints equipped. Atleast thats what i think hakita posted on the twitter. I'm not 100% sure.
It only reloads the other slabs if you hit the coin in the split window, still a massive change tho
@@THEETHEREALTOBLERONE Ah. Thanks for claryfiying that.
Tier lists ultimately doesnt matter at all, genuinely. Violence is too easy of a difficulty to warrent it, even p-ranking prime sanctums doesnt require "optimal" weapons and combos. Only time you'd need some kind of optimal play is speedrunning, maybe cybergrind past wave 50. But not in regular play.
honestly, this debate is pretty pointless
because while there isn't really an objective worst weapon, there is an objective best
and that's a DYING MAURICE BABYYYYYYYY
Just watching this lad play the game showcasing that the screwdriver could transfer to other enemies via parry is quite a spectacle! It’s so cool!!! I just love this game’s unique and creative style
Heres my weapon ranking
Fucking amazing - all of the weapons, every single one.
Wish my game ran like that
I only run the alt sharpshooter because I like the way it looks.
This video is only talking about Ultrakill but honestly, I've seen a rise in this kind of mindset for the overall gaming sphere for the past 3-4 years, so many people go out of their way to call out other peoples playstyles "un-optimal" for the most arbitrary reason of not being the fastest or easier way to deal with a problem in a game. This really makes me sad because it seems that a lot of people are starting to see that video-games are nothing more than a chore that needs to be done in the most efficient/fastest way possible instead of doing what will yield more enjoyment for you personally.
I for once will always advocate for people to stay away from trying to follow any kind of meta, even in competitive games as 90% of the time the meta only matters for tournament level players, it is way better to try to figure how you want to play on your own instead of following a guide on how to play efficiently.
Trying to P rank P-2 on violent has caused me to notice and use much more of my arsenal, it's super fun to use different parts, like every attempt I've had so far I've used every single railcannon variant, knuckleblaster, saw traps, rocket traps, alt sharpshooter, and it's been super fun, though I still havent even gotten to the panopticon yet.
Me personally, I triple-wield alt revolver.
Fight me.
Based if you use it for more than just shooting at your feet
Wait fuck I am brian dead I read sharpshooter instead of all variant
underrated channel
I unironically use slab marksman thanks to a fun little mechanic called AUTO AIM
I agree with the point that people can play however they want and you shouldn’t mock others for their playstyles but there are objectively superior options in most cases. If you don’t take the game too seriously that won't matter but for people like myself who value practicality above all else there is a meta for weapons that are better or worse than others.
The screwdriver is so good why do people hate on it ive found it crazy useful
I've seen a guy doing ultrakill blindfolded - slab marksman was his main weapon, and for a good reason (it doing more damage per shot in a run where every action is measured precisely); so there's that - the most ridiculed weapon being most useful in one of the most hardcore ways to play the game
I recently started using Knuckle blaster in my arsenal, i didnt liked it much as i was "M1+F" guy, but then, my gameplay became a lot better, and now I experiment, experiment with drills as well
but the only weapon that i just cant seem to have fun with, Slab Marksman...
Great video and epic lightning chargeback on Maurice 🗿 👍
I know this may sound a bit odd, but I prefer using slab sharpshooter over slab piercer for a variety of reasons such as being able to stop projectiles which comes in handy more times than I can count (You can also do some sick high damage tech with that's easy to do btw).
Its just like the Undertale community, except instead of story choices its playstyle choices.
That is the word of the guy who was hated By the god of failure!
The screwdriver is my go to weapon cause of my lack of skill, and heated situations in closequarter make it more manageable while the screw is onto a maurice or other tanky enemies
I actually used the screwdriver before the buff for a free fountain of blood while murdering bosses like p-2 entirely(if I could hit it). Stopping mondflayers is very useful when your being attacked by 16 other ranged enemies
Screwdriver helped me so much to defeat Sisyphus prime. It turns him into a free heal fountain for some time
3:04 gave him the sign of the cross special ➕ 🙏
As a screwdriver user, I see this as an absolute win
I agree with basically 99% of your argument, except that the only problem is with Mayo's response to ULTRAKILL, that is, the "default piercer" bit at the beginning. It's not that his playstyle is 'bad' or 'wrong', but, in my opinion, the way he went about explaining it was terrible. Rather than present proper arguments about his viewpoint, he instead spent the video insulting and shitting on ULTRAKILL while praising Doom Eternal like the best game of all time. I think that many in the community can agree that it isn't his viewpoint on things, rather the attitude attached to those opinions.
This was the first result when I searched "ultrakill nailgun" I'm cooked
the screwdriver is good when you’re screwpunching or need safeish healing, the malicious is useful for nuking and maybe some groups of enemies, the electric railcannon is good for line shots and railcoins. each weapon has its use
Hey, I think I do some experimentation. Good video!
My playstyle is forggeting the existence of the rocket launcher(and red railgun, I just use all the rest often)
Except when I see guttertanks
I got too used to just having 4 weapons
the entire point of this game is impratical but fun stuff who cares if another weapon does a better job
I think a topic everyone should cover is the massive difficulty spikes in custom levels. Those levels be trying too hard to be P-2 and are often visually stunning only to be ruined by the difficulty
Imagine if people playing ratchet & clank were made fun of because they didn't play the game like speedrunners do.
Also frankly a tier list in ultrakill makes little sense considering the lack of opportunity cost for using most weapons. The only time it makes sense is when trying to evaluate weapon variants but other than that people just kinda use what they think will either be most effective or coolest in the moment, and a weapon tier list will very rarely help with that.
I absolutely agree with what you said. ULTRAKILL is a game of player expression where anything just works. Why aim for meta when the main goal is to be stylish? Funnily enough I sometimes have moments where I just barely use coins (the meta btw), opting me to kit out all my revolvers as Alternate revolvers for more damage.
ive p ranked everything but p sanctums on standard and screwdriver is one of my favorite items lol it feels so good and is great to use on bosses at the start of a fight while u use other tools to damage them in the meantime
I use the Alt Marksman just because the sound effects are cool :) thick chonky sfx is extremely cool
novas gonna have a fit over this one
yeah I use the default nail it just feels more fun to use it and nailgun swap
I like Alt. Marksman because it taught me to use different weapons and not spam coins so much. Screwdriver is also cool because while the drill is damaging an enemy, you can add on to the damage by railcoining or projectile boosting
I feel some dissonance with how much people love coins in the community. Shooting them with the revolver just doesn't seem that good to me, mostly used for clearing fodder. Like coins are good, but they underperform in many situations.
good video overall but I think that doom eternal example was kinda stupid and goes both ways, by your logic the ultrakill knuckleblaster can be labelled as "objectively useless" because the devs made an enemy made for the knuckleblaster exclusively to be effective against (gutterman) since nobody was using it
The microwave beam is one of the many weapon mods that can actually be essential to your arsenal, the community have made many posts videos and tutorials on discussing it, like many of the other weapon mods in doom, and there's nothing wrong with adding in enemies that require specific weapons/weapon mods to defeat since ultrakill does this SAME THING
objectively “underwhelming” is what eren said, not useless. outside of dealing with the spirit enemy, microwave beam’s best use case is for for its stun properties (whether it be from the beam or the explosion) and eren obviously knows this as you can see how he animation-cancelled the tyrant. it’s definitely more of a thing to do for fun than an effective playstyle choice, which would make it adhere perfectly to ultrakill’s design philosophy, but a little less so for doom eternal’s “best tool is whatever kills quickest” kind of gameplay.
at the end of the day, most players had to be encouraged into using the microwave beam by the spirit enemy before experimenting with it more, which isn’t really a problem the knuckleblaster has or even had. a no-cost, instant 2.5 damage punch with a multi-purpose shockwave is just considered really good on paper compared to a low damage beam that slows you down while using it (could almost describe the microwave beam as a very niche blue nailgun if anything).
guttertanks were not introduced to force players into using an under-utilised weapon like how it is with the spirit, as they can still be killed normally (and quite quickly might i add) without knocking the shield away. rather, they were added to make the game more dynamic by introducing another cool “special” enemy weakness, in the same way sticky bombs work on cacodemons or how the srs cannon works with insurrectionists.
3:02 That chargeback was diabolical
The screwdriver is super cool when you parry it out of one foe, and into another. In terms of raw DPS, assuming you can land it, the technique is pretty damn powerful.
I feel like everyone who derides the weapon is overlooking that.
I think people have just forgotten that ULTRAKILL is a skill expression game and creativity is the core philosophy of the game, but people choose efficiency and try to isolate those who just play differently.
This is coming from a person who uses full auto, microwave beam and remote detonate in doom eternal, which left me looked down upon by others.
Each gun has their own niche and whichever you choose reflects your personality in the game, unless its constructive critizism don't listen to them.
the screwdriver is like an actual screwdriver. it's great for doing it's job but can be used as a weapon if you really want to
I initially thought that the screwdriver sucked until doing Minos and Sisyphus.
Damage dealing with my playstyle is NOT a problem, I do not need the railcannons to deal extra damage to clown on them slightly faster. I also don't really need the style because I still managed to P rank both bosses using it on violent.
However, I could CERTAINLY benefit from consistently getting health back *on top* of the health I'm already getting for some much needed survivability, and I'm probably gonna use it on Gabrie Act 3 because I find him and V2 to be far less 'readable' than Minos and Sisyphus.
I do wish it had more tech though, since it's useful but a little boring. All it really has is hitting it into different enemies.
