- This is the base model 14" Macbook Pro with the M1 Pro chip and it easily outperforms my custom built desktop. If you're on the fence about which spec to buy, know that even in its base form, the 14" macbook is more than capable of handling just about anything you throw at it.

I also edited this video on the Macbook and it only took 5 minutes to export this 10 minute long 4k video. So when under more normal circumstances, it performs even better. Do you feel these new chips are as game changing as everyone says?
I think they are. Putting video encoders on chips is smart idea.
Great Review…..Question my son have a Sony a6400 and he trying to do music videos and photos. Can the M1 pro base model do the job
@@princessredden5136 yes it’ll do the job very well
@@princessredden5136 Yes. I use a 16gb ram m1 macbook pro for all video and photo work I do. No problems.
Definitely game changing - only chips almost every video editor is blown away with. Amazing !
In my community, programming, the M1 with 16GB UM is still the king, no M1 Pro needed.
This is the sort of review that all the big youtubers are failing to deliver. Stop the exporting time tests madness and give us real world usage reviews and comparisons!
Thank you for this short, extremely useful and concise video!
Totally agree!
Facts 💯
Remember when Bios boot times was a "Thing"
Rarely do reviewers give real time on real things
When the last time you saw someone goto a store asking "What colours you got? How large the monitor? What the boot time?"
Never..... on the last one
“You cannot rely on just export times or benchmarks, but practical performance” mark this man’s words, this is how to do performance reviews.
It's so true.
I don't have much money atm and my ancient laptop with i7 4500u and Radeon 8850 just have cannot work with 4k at all. It will play it back OK in a video player app, but trying to edit it in premiere or Vegas etc and you can't even seek through the clips properly, like a 5 second delay. You can't preview a single stream even before edits, even at the worst preview quality. It just plays back at 1 frame per 5 seconds. Just impossible to work with. And that's x264, it's even worse with HEVC.
Where am I going with this? Just the fact that I ended up editing video on my phone (galaxy s9 at the time) and despite having to deal with the smaller screen and apps with less features and controls, it was still so liberating being able to cut through 4k hevc like a knife through butter and preview the edits smoothly and in real time, not having to render an entire clip just to see if the edit looks OK before going back and making changes etc.
I agree that being able to work with the footage smoothly to begin with is way more important than render time.
The new mac chips are incredibly well optimised for video on a hardware level, in a similar way to how phones are, and it really shines through during the editing process.
My old S9 still seeks through video better than pretty much any low end PC and a lot of mid range ones, too. And by the looks of this video, it handles doing PIP way better than even current high spec models which is really mystifying.
It's baffling how easily some hardware is so easily brought to it's knees when it comes to video, even after all these years.
It is true, Bench marks though I find people do not totally understand their purpose
They are as we call them in the engineering world "Stress test"
They push limits, the correlation of time versus completion time to me honestly is pointless
Like back in the day when people would BRAG their computer booted faster from being off. Are we comparing Bios load times now..
On that thought to see HOW much more the M1 pushes above an i7 and pushing past an i9 (In regard to going as fast with no heat issues really at all). Is insanely impressive on Apple's part.
I am with the guy here, I use a MacBook Air M1 16gb for 4k video editing while I travel vlog, I also do 4k image and RAW (Sony images) editing on affinity Photo, ZERO problems even after 1 year

The reason the M1 MacBook outperforms your desktop is because you’re dealing with compressed 4:2:2 10 bit hevc footage. Your desktop CPU doesn’t have hardware acceleration for decoding 4:2:2 10 bit hevc on the fly, so it chugs, especially when scrubbing multiple streams.
The M1 chips on the other hand, are based on an entirely different architecture to the traditional x86 chip that’ll be in your desktop. The M1 is a modern Arm based SoC that has hardware acceleration and video decoders built right onto the chip.
It’s incredible what these chips do, and I totally agree that the biggest difference isn’t in export times, it’s in real world daily workflow performance.
CUDA via NVEC would be dealing with that though, yes?
@@NicolaosSoldal I'm not sure if you know what you're talking about, NVENC is a hardware encoder and exists separately from CUDA, CUDA is how applications are GPU accelerated and that's what premiere will use, NVDEC is the hardware *decoder* that you may or may not be referring to but it probably doesn't apply here
@@trektn Sorry, I more meant it as CUDA does the rendering and NVEC does the encoding.
But the point still stands on what I am talking about here.
The CPU isn't really going to be loaded, most Laptops/Desktops worth using for an editing machine would have a GPU to be used. Thus comparing M1 and CPU performance is not very indicative of real world use.
Either way though, the M1 is really impressive, I have just swapped over to a Macbook recently just for my work and editing, it is impressive for its use case. It is nicer to use than my 3090 based rig. The hardware and software optimisation is just done really well and makes the UX significantly better, regardless of what pure numbers say.

Best comparison so far. The 4 drone shots with shots layered on top playing at once was the last push I needed to feel confident getting any of the new MB Pro models. Smooth editing over render times any day.

Dude! Yes! Export times don’t even matter it’s all about the timeline scrubbing and if it plays back smoothly in the timeline. Thank you for showing this clearly. Too many reviewers seem to think people only care about export times… honestly I don’t really care about export times only about how well it scrubs through the timeline.
Same here. frame drop problem is annoying. You can wait 5 more min but if your timeline is not smooth while editing that's annoying. MacBook air m1 has that problem, not happy with editing on MacBook air m1 16GB.
Thank for your helpful comment on the “air”, I’m going through the headaches of deciding which MacBook…
Both are important, when client wants corrections for a time critical project the short export times are welcome. Also for people that work on more than one project at the time, when the project exporting you cant work on other stuff so in that cases short export times are really welcome...

I want to say thank you my friend. Subscribed. I always said that "Export is coffee time". I've rarely run in to situations where an export will make or break delivery. For me real world application is efficiency in editing. How fast can you scroll through, edit, switch shots drop in motion graphics, alpha channels, etc etc. This has been the best video I've seen so far. Everyone else relies on specs and no one shows real world applications. I placed my order today for this and switching from my Lenovo workstation laptop.

You are so right that specs alone cannot cannot give you a true picture of the editing experience. Twenty years ago I was teaching at the University and I had the experience of teaching in a Mac lab, I couldn’t believe how such a low specked machine could do so well. I borrowed a Mac laptop from the University to make a presentation at a conference. I became a Mac fanboy, and remained so for 15 years. A few years ago, I bought a custom PC for editing. I retired my Mac Pro (cheese grater) and although I still have a MBP 2013, all the heavy lifting is done with my PC. Yes, there are issues but I get around them by using ProRes files captured by Atomos recorders or by using the Premiere proxy work flow, which is brilliant. I enjoyed you video and if I was looking to replace one of my machines, I’d be looking “back at Mac.”
I have an M1 iMac with 16 gb ram. Using FCPx for video editing I am utterly amazed how it has handled a very complex project. I love your videos. They get right to the point and are well thought out.
One of the best videos I have seen on a review of the MacBook Pro performance. Thanks!
I've watched 10's of videos on the new Macbooks, because I'm looking for something beefy but portable, and I do pretty heavy video editing and some 3D VFX, so these look promising. Your review is perfect because it isn't just a bunch of stats and benchmarks. Those are great and all, but the actual usage of the machine while editing is what we all spend the most time with, so speeding that workflow up is the main benefit of these machines. Premiere Gal had a great video testing different specific Adobe effects with it, so you two have had the best videos for these laptops I've seen.

Erwin! Hey man im a creative pro with Apple out here in Los Angeles and I've been with the company going on 11 years. As a trainer we have to be able to explain and train on the complexity of what our computers can do to the public and the employees... I gotta tell ya bro your gorilla illustration on what these computers can do is by far the best example of how our new pros work! Well done my friend!

Looking like Tupac holding a MacBook in the thumbnail 😂
I think when other ppl review specs, they lose their audience when they go too far into the technical weeds. Your approach to this explanation was exactly what I needed to help me make my decision.. Thanks and you got a new sub...
you have some amazing positive energy going on bro. may all ur wishes come true man. GL
Exactly its the editing process that matters. Who cares if export time is extra 5 or 10 minutes. I do not get why youtubers get maxed out Macbook pro for non heavy processed videos.
For the true youtube creator, trust me it matters! even for them, they have deadlines to meet and if they have a week's worth of videos queued then who wants to be waiting an extra 50mins because the computer is slow(er) They also understand that it will last longer if it's easy today it won't be 5-6 years from now if they keep the machine that long (many don't). WHAT I HAVE MORE OF PROBLEM WITH is RUclipsrs with 30-70k's worth of red and Arri cameras to film themselves talking-head style its literally indistinguishable from a canon r5 or even an iphone when compressed for youtube. Waste of time, who do they think are the BBC filming the next planet earth!
Money
@@gaza4543 , deadlines? Weeks worth of queue? What the “professional” is pushing this type of project deadlines to post on a heavily compressed RUclips channel? True RUclips creator? Do you even know the definition of terms you are using?
Professional DO NOT waist their time with RUclips. There are other services designed for professional playback streaming and it’s not compressed like RUclips. They also do not mind waiting for a project to export. Also, Adobe PP isn’t professional as far as hardware optimization and efficiency in the first place because it’s hybrid of old and new code thrown together, thus being buggy and a resource hog. Adobe whole line needs to be reprogrammed from the ground up before calling their product “professional” in comparison to alternatives. If it was Pro then it wouldn’t be subscription based.
If it handles videos at that quality in a breeze man I cant even imagine how simple it will handle photos on lightroom and photoshop. Blessings to you, definitely helped start making a final decision.
Now this is how you review a product! I think you found a great formula for reviewing products. No benchmark bs just pure workflow. Keep it up man! Subbed.
Formulas are as stupid as people who comment saying they subscribed
You are one of the people who truely knows how a real world editing task would be like. Thank you for sharing with us about the true performance of Mac world.
I watched more than 10 videos and was still confused between Mac & Windows laptop for video editing and everyone left me more confused than before. You just made me decide in a matter of 10 mins. Awesome work man 👏👏😁
If you want a better time scrubbing footage you should look into creating proxies (lower res copies of your footage created when you import video into premiere), makes workflow much smoother than having to export sections of your video and watching it back, the nice thing is everything you render out is still in full quality, plus you can toggle proxies on or off with a button if you need to see full res while editing
Came to the comments for exactly this kind of comment. I still want to get an M1 chipped macbook pro though ;)
Good video. Useful real world uses and insights.
@@formlessuk oh yeah, they're great, I have the m1 max, sometimes you just have footage that is difficult to work with so proxies come in really handy, the time it takes to create them upfront is worth it when it comes to smooth workflow
@@andyt3619 I'm still soldiering on with a 2015 macbook pro i7 quadcore and the proxies have been an absolute lifesaver! May I ask which RAM you went with? I was thinking to go Pro Max with 32gb of RAM just so I never regret this uograde for 7-10 more years. Video and music making PLUS livestreaming (which is pretty intensive).
@@formlessuk I have the 32gb ram version, it's excellent. I work for an agency where everyone has iMacs and honestly my macbook smokes a lot of them, not sure what their specs are tbh though. Most of my footage is stuff filmed by me and is normally prores 422, prores 422 HQ, or occasionally prores RAW using an atomos ninja V, and I can have a bunch of video tracks stacked in premiere without issue. Only issue for me is I have the 1TB ssd and wish they got me the 2TB. Also since adobe updated their software to talk to M1 chips, things got way faster
I spec’d out the 14” and returned it for the base model. People, trust him, don’t throw away your money.
so you went with the 512 model for video editing, is that enough space? I'm new to video and wondering if I can get away with just 512MB of SSD for minimal wedding footage? I'm a photographer who shoots a little video these days. Your response is greatly appreciated!

By Far the best M1 review I have watched. And when I say "I have watched" believe I have watched over 30 videos on the M1.
Your video provided a different angle that other videos ignored. It's not just about the speed but also the smoothness of the process. I just subscribed.
Thanks for info 👍👍
This has to be the best practical review I have seen on the new MacBook pros. Great work 👍 I got more Ram on mine because I did not want to write to hard drive constantly and I like to leave a lot of applications open and never close them. But you’re right it’s very smart machine knows how to manage the workload beautifully.
This is the kind of actual, real-world editing process video I was looking for! I'm probably gonna go with the 2023 models now, but with even better chips, they should perform even better in the editing process. Thank you!
8:40 I see what you did there. Also, like the other 600+ people, this review was very helpful. I couldn’t care less how it performs on all those bench mark tests. I don’t use them for my videos and photos 🤷♂️ You gave us a real use case and spoke to us at our level. That’s the difference. You sir just gained sub.

upgrading to a new macbook after years of an intel macbook... this is the BEST video I have seen so far! thank you!
One of the best reviews out there, no BS, just facts and that part where the you explained about editing process is the best
This is exactly the type of review I need - an ACTUAL day in the life review from someone who ACTUALLY uses the product and has to consider the value because they bought it with their own money, like the average viewer would. RUclipsrs with dozens of devices talking about their "daily driver" device...yeah, not all of us get sent so many free products from companies that we can pick and choose a "daily driver".
I've watched so many videos covering the new M1 chips and yours is the first that I've seen to actually show how it handles actual workflow. I feel a lot more confident getting an M1 Mac now.
Do you think it is still good to get now
@mizoosama8700 absolutely

Too bad our options are only the like button, because I would seriously hit the love button. This video is so well done and identifies exactly the video editing problem I’m having on my older iMac. After reviewing your video right now I understand the advantage to going to the M1 pro it’s going to make in my every day work life. Great video, you rock! 👋🏼🇨🇦
No fluff, no BS, brilliantly explained. This is greatness
Considering buying a new PC for video editing on Premiere Pro, and this is the BEST review so far.
I was hoping to see more of actual editing and you just brought an excellent test that illustrates the performance of the new Pros so well. Thanks, Erwin!
Great video fam!
And this is exactly what someone like me needs to know! This is a really high value video right here. You're sort of like me here except you managed to find a 3070. This is the single greatest computer review video I’ve ever watched
Honestly, the analogy was pretty brilliant and accurate.
Editing buttery smooth, saves you more than 5 mins and it promotes your ability to get more creative. Great review 😎
Man your videos are awesome, actually explained something unlike many other RUclipsrs. You should defiantly do more real time editing videos using Different codecs just so people know what they’re getting:)
That Macbook M1 Pro chip is incredible! Great review and good breakdown. Subscribed! I see a lot of RUclipsrs relying on benchmarks to proof which computer they're testing is better. The M1 Pro is gorgeous but I still want the M1 Max 16". The spec'd out M1 Max 16" will cost you almost $7,000.
if you can afford and need it, go for it. Buy the latest and greatest one!
M1 max with 32gb worth 3500$ should be excellent for most intensive work
I have the m1 pro 16gb ram and its amazing and very good battery
This video is everything. I think he just became my new favorite RUclipsr/photographer
Man out of 7000 review videos THIS video was actually helpful. Keep it up king
This is exactly the kind of video I was looking for. A real testimony about how well the new MBP can edit videos. Thank you for explaining it in a really great way, too.
Good review man, benchmarks dont do justice.
Real World experience is better.
Good job on this one. Keep it up
Wow okay this makes me feel more confident about possibly getting the base model, although I really want the 16" because the screen!!
Best video about these macs for editors!!!
The gorilla metaphor is simply beautiful (and useful). Standing ovation for you!!!
I’ve not really needed a powerful computer in a long time, and had to watch a bunch of videos to even become vaguely familiar with these new Mac chips. I did buy this same model, and now need to learn video editing.
Just the kind comparison I needed to see to help me decide to stay with PC or move to a MacBook. Another very important fact is that higher end PC laptops require it to be plugged in for maximum performance vs the M1 pro chip does not and has longer battery life. Also a footnote, the 16” M1 MacBook Pro runs 20 to 30 Celsius cooler than the 14”. Great job bro!😎🤜🏼🤛🏼
This is very helpful! Thank you for showing real-life experience working in Premiere Pro with the new mbp compared the your previous computer!
Finally! Just the video I needed. You showed solid examples and was straight to the point. This was amazing. I was so confused on the other videos I have seen of other tech RUclipsrs of what laptop to get for editing (as I have a channel and is a Media studies major) and my current laptop runs so slow on adobe premiere on simple tasks such as splicing and adding text. Thank you so much. Just subbed!
Just bought the M1 Pro 16 inch just now. This was the video i needed!
Got the 14" yesterday with the 16-core GPU, upgraded from macbook pro base 2015. Processor is fast as described and speakers are so good too!
Thanks so much for this review. I'd been looking for real-world examples as I edit a lot of footage regularly (now in 1080p and looking to up it to 4k with this laptop). This is the only review I've found so far that addresses my questions.
Perfect video. I feel like working with video content comes with some pressure to feel like we need the best of the best so i always get antsy when it comes to base models so this helped majorly.
"Strong but not smart" Man what a piece of quote.
I appreciate your approach in reviewing these machines.
Awesome review, you showed REAL world performance beyond the benchmark BS and compared it directly with a similar windows workflow. So good, thank you mate
Thank you for this video, I’ve been looking everywhere for just an easy to follow, general video of the base model to see if it’s powerful enough for things like video editing and even music production.
Erwin,
Your practical comparison was DOPE! I so appreciate your input as I am also a photographer/videographer whose line of work is similar to yours. I have been debating about 16 or 32 GB of RAM. I see now that the base M1 Pro with 16GB will work. BUT the only drawback is when you might need that extra HP you can't swap out the RAM because it's soldered to the MB. As our workloads increase and the MP, FPS increases the time will increase. I think after watching your video, I'll upgrade to 32 GB so I'm not buying another Macbook in 2 years or less. Thanks, Brah for the work, getting this video out.
Best review I’ve seen of anything tech related. I’m sending this to everyone
Love what I'm hearing! This tells me that how we used to do it was a compromise and now with the new laptops we can just add more and do more.
Thanks man! This is the type of video I was looking for.
I'm a photographer and videographer, about 50/50. And I'm in the market for a new editing machine. I couldn't decide between a desktop pc or the M1 Pro / Max MacBooks, this has made the process a bit easier. Sucks that I also like to game every now and then, but it's not a priority.
Wish it just had an ethernet port now too haha. USB-C ethernet dongles really don't work all that great on the MacBooks in my experience.
This is insane. I can see the base M1 Pro is better than the 13" M1
Great review and it was nice seeing a realistic example. I actually hate Intel now and my Windows laptop drives me mad with the heat and fan noise.
I'll look at the base 14" and 16" Pro models now. Thanks for the video man 🙏🏽💻
Thanks for this! As a Premiere user, there is a lack of videos. Also, as someone on a costly desktop PC setup, I get frustrated with the playback and timeline problems. I ordered an m1 Pro with the 1TB upgrade mostly just as storage is always an issue, so wanted to spend the extra $400 to give me that wiggle room and slightly upgraded CPU. I'm feeling really good about the purchase now Well, see if I hold on to my PC or not.
I'm interested in how it went? Did you switch to Apple? How's the video editing compared to Windows?
@@jarednel I've kept my PC for now as I have some projects that were already there but bouncing between platforms for different projects. So far my PC handles high memory task and encoding better, but the Mac handles fast memory tasks and data access better. So timeline and most editing is better in Premiere on the Mac, but I can't be running other programs at tsame time like I do on my PC. Encode time is solid enough (I'm not encoding hour long programs these days). If I thought I could get value from selling my PC I would feel good to do so, but for now I'm keeping it for most use that isn't machine taxing and for gaming.
@@DerekDockendorf Wow. Thanks so much for taking the time to reply. 🤝
Did you have to adjust to the "Mac" way of doing things? Or had you used both systems before? Are there any other real-life pros and cons to each platform in your experience? 🤔
I'm in quite a dilemma... I've been a die-hard Windows fan since Windows 98. I've always looked sideways at Mac computers. Haha. 😄
But now, I've just recently launched a RUclips channel and I'll be having to do a lot of regular video editing and production. I love my Windows laptop, it's worked hard for years, but it's getting old and just not handling the video editing so well. ⚠️
All that to say, I'm wanting to upgrade my laptop to something that I can edit and produce videos comfortably with. But I'm torn because, (1) I'm on a tight-ish budget, (2) I've only ever used windows and switching systems now freaks me out. BUT (3) it seems these Macs are amazing and would I just be an idiot not switching at this point? 🤷♂️
you absolutely earned a new subscriber just with this very first video I saw of you. Props to you, spittin' facts and all.
This is the video I should've watched 2 weeks ago when I was debating with myself to get the MBP 14 or MBA M2! I ended up with MBP 14 and I couldn't be more happy. Seeing this video as well is the cherry on top :)
