I would love for you to play "Gee I'm glad it's raining" from Ernest Goes to camp. Your take on it would be amazing like all your work. I had a Daughter who was 18 months old that past away from a heart defect. She past in 2015. "Gee I'm glad it's raining" is kinda my song I listen to when she past away , that and Angle Flying to close to the ground. If you find the time please do "Gee I'm glad it's raining". I would love to hear it in you style. You are amazing.
Jess Cass I’m so sorry... as a father myself, I can’t even imagine how painful that must be. Much love 💚
I don’t even play the guitar, but I still found this video inspiring. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
I'm so guilty of the comparison thing. In fact I've had those thoughts/feelings when watching your vids before haha. So it's truly comforting to know that even a player on your level isn't immune to those feelings of discouragement. Thanks man.
Quality advice about comparing yourself to others. Just remember you don't have to be "the" best, you just have to be "your" best... That will always lead to improvements.
I love your channel. It's the proof that classical guitar is beautiful.
From the most deepest and emotional part of my heart
THANK YOU
Keep spreading the love bro
This video gave me some motivation..thanks dude ;)
This is very helpful advice, especially tip 2. Thank you very much!
Excellent tips. Thanks pal
1. Stop comparing yourself to others
- if you find yourself comparing yourself to other guitarist instead of being inspired, do your best to just focus on *your* practice
- take a break from watching/listening to other guitarists
2. If you’re struggling to get in consistent practice, remove *quantity* from the equation
- make guitar practice a non-negotiable part of your day, but when that becomes a struggle, don’t put a quantity on the amount of practice you have to do that day
- your goal is to just play, whether that’s 1 min, 10, 30, etc.
3. Focus on quality over quantity
- set small, specific goals for each practice session
- specific goals are concrete/measurable
- use a 20 min focused/5 min rest interval, repeat until you’ve accomplished your goals for the session
4. Make deadlines
- set specific dates
- tell others about your deadlines to stay accountable
This is outstanding. I was a music major and used these very tips in my practice as well, then brought them to my other studies as my career took me away from music. For the past couple of months, I've been reinspired to pick up the guitar and start improving and recording music more, but somehow forgot how to "practice music" after all this time, even though I still use these techniques elsewhere. This video hits the nail on the head and is perfect for reminding me how to accomplish the musical goals I want to accomplish this year. Thank you for being an outstanding musician and teacher!
Great encouragement to anyone who is pursuing excellence and going deeper into a specialty. Thanks, Nathan!
Until now, this is still useful so much
Thanks bro
Thank you very much!
This video has a really great content, and it's exposed with an amazing quality. Thank you so much.
You are the person that inspire me Thank You a lot
Great tips!
Beyond the guitar was the actual reason that I wanted to learn how to play the guitar. the first song a learned on guitar was actually the "dragon born" theme and now thanks to the inspiration that i got from Nathan i can just listen to a song and in a few hours of listening and trying to play along i can then play the song, so thanks Nathan!
You have no idea how happy I got when I saw that you like my comment 😂😂🙂
The Black Swords man how did you learn?
Friend, this video is a true gem. Thank you for sharing this, it's always good to refresh the mind. Best of luck with your 2020 goals, man!
Great Job! Thanks for all the hard work and wish you can reach you goal as well!
Thanks a lot
Great just like it is always
This video was so helpful! I've been struggling with motivation since I left uni and lost my jamming partner/teacher but found some inspiration from watching your videos, and now you've given some great ways for me to really get back into it. I recently started learning finger style guitar so my goal is by the end of the year I want to be able to play at least 4 full songs finger style, the first of which I started learning this week, The Sound Of Silence. Thank you not only for your music, but your desire to help all of us learning guitar as well. :)
Thanks for your advice👍
Very helpful and inspirational advice. I'm an older guitar player and I know for sure that a lot of what you say has and still does apply to my guitar playing and practice. I'm definitely going to take a lot of what you say here on board and stop just messing about. Thanks for the sense of direction.
These tips are really helpful, man. I'll definitely be using them in my drum practicing.
I have my first recital at the end of the year. So I will be playing a couple of pieces. So there is one of my goals. That And learning some of your arrangements!!
Thank you, this video was helpful.
Great video, It gives me a lot of motivation :)
Thanks for the awesome tips! My goal is to someday play the guitar like you do! I truly love the way you play keep up the good work!
some good tips for trying to achieve anything and not just practicing guitar! I definitely need to implement some of these this year! moon x
Really really nice!
I don’t play guitar anymore but I love watching you videos and they are so much fun to watch you play
Okay, i will do it!
Loved the rendition of Auld Lang Syne! Scotland gets stronger at new year because the world sings our words! Great video and great advice.
I agree with HenryZeno, I've not picked up my guitars for years (good 3-5 years) because of comparing myself to others, to the point when someones asks you "can you play", i used to say i'm OK, i'm still learning". Being self taught, i cant read music (thank god for tabs) which i guess didn't help. After watching 2-3 of your videos its inspired me to get in my attic and dig out my guitars. Defiantly get my sub, thank you.
I bought your "Avengers: Infinity War" tab last year, and I'm STILL struggling with it. I wanted to develop better hand technique, like arpeggios & 4-fret stretch (my fingers are short!). So that's a carry-over goal from last year. This year's goal, inspired by your previous video, is to write a chord/melody arrangement to an old song I really like. Got the song, melody & key, so now I need to ffind the chords to play under the melody. Heavy stuff!
About the comparison thing i don’t really have that struggle because always if i see other guitarist (mostly you) i get inspired and i get a sort of boost to learn it too
Thank you for these tips. I want to start busking regularly and play my music for others instead of only playing for myself.
Great message. I want to learn how to play lead solo's using triads as the base of the melody!
Thanks for all your help and tips! I'm starting my second year in the Music Academy ("Conservatorio" in spanish, don't know the translation at the moment...) and second year as a guitar student, and I have discovered your channel recently and your work is amazing!
Thanks again for all the tips and inspiration!
So glad I can help! I've moved all my instructional content over to my 2nd channel "Beyond The Guitar Academy", so make sure you've subscribed there for more!
I just started guitar (steel string acoustic) about 1 and a half months ago, I have been self teaching and it's going great. I'm getting a classical guitar this summer and my goal is to play spira unplugged from FFX on the classical guitar by the end of this year.
Good stuff Nathan! Just to add, I often have picked up the guitar feeling crappy. I have found that practice/playing makes the physical discomfort abate. This probably applies to... "I'm too tired to practice" thing as well. Thanks again.
Thanks for the video, great advice man. My goal is to record a demo CD and get good enough to play gigs.
Hi! My name is Mabel and I'm Brazilian and I love your channel, including what inspired me to play the guitar was you, continue with this wonderful channel

To learn to play the guitar!!!! 2020 goal!!
Goal I thought I wanted b4 the video: Transcribe more pieces cuz thts good.
Goal I want now: Focus on gaining better knowledge of the fretboard
Realization as I write this: Both of these goals go hand in hand
Before this video, my goal was to be able to Play multiple songs without the sheet. My goal now is to be able to Play the songs that I practice out in the public. e.g. Busking, Shows, Local Events. This video gave me a lot of inspiration, Thank you for this and you should make more videos like this to support guitarists no matter what level of difficulty they are at.
Last year, I did real well with the flamenco picking style (think Leonard Cohen's "The Stranger Song".). Now I'm looking to go in a jazzier direction, as far as development goes. It's going well so far! I've been watching a lot of Steely Dan guitar covers with chord by chord tabletures, and I've got some of those tasty "mu major" progressions down.
I'm hoping that if I can keep this up, I can get some truly original songwriting going. That's a mission for the new decade, though.
Good vid
