Have you ever made an arrangement before? If so, what did you arrange? If not, what’s stopping you? Leave a comment and let me know!
I have been arranging (or trying to arrange) pop songs for quite some time now but they always turn out really basic and boring.
That's why I'm looking forward to your instructional videos! Hope they'll give me some inspiration and help me progress!
I don’t arrange but i compose one piece for each of my guitar grades 🙂
I did an electric guitar arrangement of the Ghostbusters theme and the themes to the Marvel Netflix shows. I never said they were good though.
BTG inspired and encouraged me to start my yt channel last year and I have been arranging for Octopath Traveler and will try more new stuff this year! Thx Nate!
I have but unfortunately, the arrangement was crap. So I still hope you would release videos like this. I had only 2 years experience since I was 10. I'm twelve years old
Will your lessons always be free? So excited to take the first step in arrangment!
Well said. Can't agree more! Good job and congrats for the website launch!
You have no idea how happy I am for this video. I was looking for this since before September where I would check either the website or a new video often, I'm pretty sure I checked today the comments on your latest cover to see if there was any update since you didn't upload for some time.
Either way I just want to say that whenever I try creating a arrangement I have a hard time cutting down instruments, because for orchestral music like in most soundtracks even if I can distinguish a lot of instruments I want to play them all which with my limited guitar skills seem like a very poop cover. Another problem is the determination on recording because of the arrangements are usually hard I don't have the patience or discipline to pratice until it's perfect. (Actually I just did one today even though it's bad I'm happy that I did it).
So thanks for the motivation and don't stop either your guitar instructions or your arrangements I love playing them
Thank you, good sir! you're honestly an inspiration and you keep motivating me to practice playing fingerstyle songs~ keep up your amazing work ^ ^
Great stuff, this really answers a great need of mine, and I assume countless other guitarists that are trying to take it to the next level.
My greatest struggle would be "thickening" an arrangement I'm making, after getting the bass and melody, and sometimes the chords, it's quite the hassle to fill up the space with more "sounds" that'll compliment the piece
Great video! Even for someone who doesn't play guitar. It was fascinating. Thanks! Looking forward to your teaching content...might even inspire me to pick up the guitar.
Can't wait to see your website and channel grow! I find your videos and lessons so inspirational and relaxing, that i instantly want to grab my guitar and try it, even if i know, it's way to heavy. :-D
Just watched the training video... Very nice explanations and I Love the accompaning fret chart. Hope there are further episodes in the works. All the best to you and thanks for the free course :)
Nice! Very exciting man.
Awesome video. Appreciate the advice.
Finally!!! Can't wait to check it out
Great video about something I recently understood. Always learning :)
This is really what I need. I‘m playing the guitar now for 8 years, but I never, never, never could do an arrangenmant. Thanks Nathan
I am about the cry.. Such a work man ,i really thank you so much.
Thanks for sharing this! I couldn’t agree more with everything you’ve said. I create piano arrangements of movie & game soundtracks and they bring me the same fulfillment that you’re talking about. Also, by looking back at my previous arrangements and learning from my mistakes I learn SO much about music theory! It’s awesome how you can really get to know a composer by arranging multiple songs of him/her.
HERE IT IS ! woop woop! super pomped to learn. thanks
So hyped for the new instructional videos!
You're awesome man, congratulations on the site :)
great video. makes me excited to see the other tutorials and to have a go at arranging a piece myself one day! moonx
Nathan, this is fantastic. Thank you SO MUCH for sharing your expertise. I've experienced the first step of the journey, and it already shines light on some key questions I've always had about creating chords on guitar. If I might offer a suggestion, would you consider creating a separate document (similar to the note-fretboard chart) with the ways to build a major, minor, diminished, and augmented chord (and any others you think might be relevant)? Having to refer back to the video each time to see how that works limits my ability to smoothly apply your lessons. Thanks so much for considering this!
Just Subscribed! I love your videos! :)
Very awesome video Nathan. Thank you for the links as well. My weakness is that I've played guitar now for 25+years and I just always blew off playing fingerstyle... Now I regret it because that's my limit... And I always fall back to using a pick, even when I'm figuring out what you do and learning melodies, I'll start reverting back to that darn pick. Not giving up though! Congrats on beyondtheguitar.com and Happy New Year!!!!
Looking forward to your arranging tutorials!
Thanks again for the inspiration
I am proud to tell, i've listened to you and it payed off.
Juste finished arranging a song i really like.
Its not perfect BUT its complete! :)
I arranged a song from legend of the dragoon one of my favourite I call it Fletz town But its really called Town 2.
A awesome song that deserve some love!
Really excited to finally get into fingerstyle arranging!
Interesting goal. Sounds fun.
I just recently started making my own arrangements and this really inspires me to do more of it!!
Wow bro Amazing big fan really exicetd for you'r you'r lesson's 😎👏🎉
Yeahhhh!
I was always covering Eddie van der meer's arrangement, but now I try to arrange my own covers, it's a lot better! :D
This is really cool. One of my goals this year is to improve my guitar playing, mainly trying to make my playing less sloppy. Sure, I can play well, but sometimes I am sloppy and don't play as clearly as I want. I want my guitar playing to be more smooth and consistent.
This is what I was looking for 🙏🏻 Thank you!

omg thank you so much
Ohhhh put me in no. 3!!
I just love hearing music in your RUclips channel!
(I recognize them!!)
Hi! I've been playing guitar for almost 4 years now, but i can't quite really get the grasp of "making" chords (if thats the right term). I've been struggling for quite some time and i feel like i hit my peak as a guitarist. Congratulations on the site! Looking forward to learning more!
Well after I purchased my classical guitar, inspired by you I thought you were on fender but Lo! It is not available in India. I live in a small town so no guidance for me on the classical; but I will keep learning thanks for inspiration one day I will play like you 😁
I look forward to your guidance.
Legitimately excited for the series, probably my biggest frustration is plucking the wrong strings when finger styling. For example, I would need to pluck the G string but accidentally also pluck the B string slightly but enough to still hear it ring. I hope I'm making sense and I hope there's a good way to fix it.
Wow !!!! Your such an inspiration , thx for this ! Id love to arrange myself a song completely compare to cover
I would love to be a part of this! I have been playing guitar for over 30 years and I still only play first position chords, strum, and read basic finger style tabs. just last year I started making very very basic ukulele finger style arrangements of hymns. They only use my thumb and only downward motions. I would love to unlock the fretboard and understand how to make arrangements for guitar.
Great idea dude, hope this project goes well for you!
I know I'm not alone when I say, I'm very excited about the fact that you are sharing your knowledge of classical guitar with us. I am self-taught guitarists, that plays only my own music. I don't read music, so it makes playing others music a little more challenging. Can you teach me without reading music?
Brilliant presentation, and explanation Nathan! Happy New Year! Will Ortiz Just about all of my music videos are my personal interpretations of a composition. One of the most difficult was doing my arrangement of the classic hit "Apache" on trumpet. The song is written for guitar or keyboard....Will Ortiz (I am far from the best trumpet player, but I enjoy the challenge of arranging and playing a piece intended for another instrument on trumpet)….Will Ortiz
Great video and I love the 3 reasons you gave. I do a little guitar arranging on my own. I have a rare recording of Joe Pass playing "My Favorite Things" but he stopped after the first A section. So I completed the song with his concept. One of my favorite arrangements I've done is of "The Candy Man". I tried to mimic the orchestra version from the movie version as much as possible and it came out pretty good. This leads to an important question that would be great to hear your thoughts on.
What do you do to make the arrangement seem more unique to you and your style versus just trying to copy the orchestra parts as much as possible?
It'd be great to hear some tools on how to make a unique arrangement. I really like and respect your work and your heart regarding music, guitar and life. Keep it up!
I'd love some picking/plucking techniques. I'm actually a (wannabe) jazz guitarist, but I bought your arrangement for "Infinity Wars" and honestly, I don't really know what you're doing sometimes with the harmonics and stuff. I've started messing with some arrangements, so I'm very interested in you channel & have subscribed, thank you.
Thanks so much for this video, I can play Tommy Emmanuel but i just can't control it. My fingers mess up and i just Stutter but like on the guitar( any tips?)
When I started guitar my father always wanted me to play Simple Man by lynrd skynyrd witch was fine but after 10 months i was playing Advanced pieces like Over the Rainbow and had no reason to play Simple Man. What i learned very soon was not everyone appreciates finger-style guitar unless you play a song that connects to them. Now that i had this experience it made me realise that i was not looking at it the right way, I was looking at Simple Man as a stupid song with no challenge but it connected to him emotionally.
Thanks for reading this comment, Zane.
I haven't studied music before really, I taught myself basic chords when I was sad and bought myself a guitar and then my best friend at uni taught me how to really play, power chords, scales, alternate picking and tonnes more, but because of that I never learned to read music. I had a bit of a dry stage where I felt like I wasn't progressing and then I found your channel, you inspired me and I decided I'd like to learn how to finger pick, so far I can almost play the intro from your avengers arrangement, but any tips for practicing finger style and getting it to become natural and part of muscle memory like I have with alternate picking? Also going back to reading music any ways you can suggest to learn outside of tutors? I don't have that much money lying around for tutors unfortunately xD
I'm learning DADGBD because I'm learning "Going to California". I'd love to hear your cover!
Nice video! Greetings from Turkey :D
Sana da selamlar :D
Getting the right beat or rhythm of a song
I'm not new to music as a former low brass college major. I picked up classical guitar in July, and I was kind of lost as to where to begin. I felt like method books were okay, but a video on what fretting and plucking techniques would have been good to practice (i.e. Lesson 1: major scales and picado, etc.) Also, I jumped in wanting to not take shortcuts, but also not be stuck on Hot Cross Buns on the high e string. So, I've started a regiment of 1 half hour of technique and a half hour of learning a song (I'm like 2 pages in to your Promentory arrangement and my wife yells at me for going in over my head.) The problem is that I don't know if the techniques I'm practicing are conducive to overall guitar development. Also, should I stick to only learning fingerstyle classical? Will picking up a telecaster with a pick every now and then be detrimental to my muscle memory? 🤷🏻♂️ Hope this helps the both of us lol. Thanks for the great music also!!
I’m at a stage where I can pick up a guitar and learn most songs I want but i want to know how to apply theory better things like improvisation, technique and knowing more about how each note can be used in different ways in composition with others.
Should I be arranging as a beginner classical guitar player, or do I need to spend time building the technique first?
This need more views
Niiiiice
Guitar hammers with my pinky/ other fingers are something I find difficult to do. Can u talk about how to improve on guitar hammers.
My struggle is fast scales, I need to work on the speed of my rest stroke technique. My left hand is fine though!
I struggle with D note or the lower D note I guess is how it’s called I’m still learning the cords but it’s hard to switch back and fourth to D note a lot it’s very hard for me. I’m not good at switching cords that are far away fast.
Hi! Congrats for this channel!! It's amazing and full of good stuf!! I have a question for you: If I want to upload classical guitar cover songs it is legal? Let say I love one of your beautiful arrangemnts and then I want to record it and post on my youtube channel and say that it s your arrangemnts, it is legal?
Yes, I love it when people do that. The only thing that might happen is the copyright holder of the original song (not me) might claim revenue from the video, but in my experience, that only happens on occasion.
@@BeyondTheGuitar Thank you very much for your kind answers. So If I want to record one of your arrangements on my youtube channel are you agree with that?
👍 likeeeeeee chido video
I have trouble knowing what the right classical guitar posture is and how to hold my right hand. Thanks!
I’m pretty fresh into guitar, taking an uncle’s advice to just learn how to play a song, then another, then another. The song I’m working on is the first where the rhythm isn’t a simple three or four beat, and while it’s sounding great, I’m having trouble keeping that rhythm while singing. Any advice?
Will you be doing anything on ear training?
My biggest struggle with the guitar currently is playing complex melodies, understanding harmonic relations and most of all, figuring out how to get out rhythm and melody at the same time using fingerstyle.
I never know how to get started on an arrangement.
I usually look up a tutorial for the song, get the melody down, and I go from there. I have no idea how to gef that step out of my way especially since I haven't found tutorials for the songs I've wanted to cover recently. Any advice?
Good
Mi strugle right now is that i can play alot of things like sungha jungs really hard covers but now i want to go deeph on music theory and i dont know where to start and i dont see any youtube channel with a good list
can you do instrument covers like guitar or bass guitar just for fun and not for money? even if its copyrighted? i did covers before and some of them have claims but not taken down.
When composing, I find that I have many issues with figuring out the proper voices for each fingers and what elements of the piece should be used and which should be scrapped
Good finger exercises that you regularly use to gain dexterity and make your fingers move individually
I'm making guitar covers but after watching this video I really want to do my own arrangements
When’s the new album coming dude?
Sorry couldn't listen to anything you said, i was busy admiring THAT MAJESTIC BEARD!
I really want it but I don't know how to train my ear and finding the correct bass note for a melody. I can do a bit by ear but is there a formula?
I’m really interested in buying a nylon string and start playing classical music, what’s a good model I can buy?
I have a question about Guitar pro program.
How to put two notes played at the same time but one of them is half note and the other note is a hole note?
Please make Natural
What do you do when your mind gets behind in time of what your playing ?
I’ve never managed to arrange a piece... I enjoy a lot of Ludovico Einaudi pieces but really can’t grasp transcribing from piano to keyboard.
👍
💪💪💪💪💪
My biggest frustration is that I can't be creative. I get down the notes but. It doesn't do it for me... like I did the valse di fantastica arrangement but it sounded trash, and yours was beautiful. They were on the same chords. :(
everybody needs to realize that the longer you do something, the better.
Take the tips and instructional's to give ourself a foundation. Then each video gets easier to make and then it allows you to focus on the supplementary aspects of recording, filming, editing. (like singing and playing bass simultaneously).
You all can do it. just is tedious
Good morning.
I can't seem to figure out how to make an arrangement that fits the music perfectly and sounds any good
My biggest struggle is getting away from sheet music and strict music theory rules, I’ve been taught classically for my whole life and I’ve always found improvisation very difficult
My biggest struggle is using drumming in my guitar playing. I cant drum on the guitar while playing its kinda frustrating
Was waiting at my screan for a new wid XD...
Por favor coloca legenda em português 🇧🇷
Please learn and play the song of the golden dragon pleaaaaaaaaaaaaaaz
I'd like to hear you play some classical guitar pieces. Like the one you were playing from Barrios.
Maybe in a different channel if you don't want to bore your core audience.
I have some on my old channel "Nathan Mills Guitar", but the videos are pretty old. Maybe I'll do more in the future!
I struggle with playing all tones clean. Some tones always are unclean and they don't sound good. Especially during auditions.
My biggest issue is just not knowing how to place my fingers when using things like tabs. I feel like once I officially get that down i'll be good to go
The most annoying is when I learn a song by a tab and when I've already put time to learn it, I find out it doesn't sound right to me at some point and then I often give up on the song
I for some reason have a lot of pain when baring chords
getting started is my biggest struggle
I entered my e-mail for the fretboard freedom yesterday, but I haven't recieved an e-mail yet.
Sorry about that! Did you check to make sure it didn't get sent to any spam folders? Were you already a subscriber on my mailing list? There's a glitch I'm working out where it won't send out the email to people who have previously subscribed. Email me at nathan@beyondtheguitar.com from the email address you used to signup and I'll send you the training!
My biggest struggle? Improvising, not being able to learn other people's compositions....and sth my dad always wanted....being able to play whatever I hear.....
0:41 cant figure out how to play songs by ear
My biggest problem about playing the guitar, is that I'm simply to slow with my left hand. I play the guitar for seven years now, but still can't handle fast pieces...
Comicadia practice slow and gradually up the tempo.
I keep getting frusterated because i cant play what im hearing in my mind. Due to lack of knowledge
Just described my life friend 😂
