This movie fills me with nostalgia, mainly because it was mostly filmed in and around Phoenix, Arizona. "San Dimas" Mall is actually MetroCenter, back when it actually had an ice skating rink. Sunsplash fills in as "Waterloo". "San Dimas High School" is Coronado High School.
As a musucian, I've always loved the idea of giving someone like Beethoven modern technology to play with. My favorite part of the movie is the look Beethoven gives the salesman when he asks if he's a musician!
I really love this 80's classic, and remember seeing it in 1989 when I was 14. Suddenly I feel old. 😅 So happy you enjoyed it Addie. Bill and Ted's mission would have been much less crowded/easier if they had a different time traveling phone booth aka Dr Who's Tardis.
Hey, Addie! This is a classic comedy that has aged well and even spawned a reunion sequel 30 years later! Napoleon goes to Waterloo Water Park because the name was familiar. Napoleon was defeated at Waterloo, Belgium in 1815 by the Duke of Wellington. Beethoven was the composer who went deaf. He was eventually forced to "hear" his own music by pressing his ear to the piano to feel the vibrations. Sigmund Freud holding the corn dog is meant to be a phallic joke but sometimes a corn dog is just a corn dog. The 1,000,000 BC launch which startled the cavemen and their discovery of gum was meant to sort of parody the monolith sequence in "2001: A Space Odyssey". An Oedipus Complex is when one desires intimate relations with one's own mother. The name is derived from the Sophocles tragedy wherein Oedipus unknowingly murders his father and weds his mother. The "princesses" were probably just noble ladies-in-waiting, not historical figures. They're played by a different pair in each film of the trilogy. Saxophonist Clarence Clemons of Bruce Springsteen's E-Street Band was the central leader in the future sequence. The phone booth is a riff on Doctor Who's TARDIS despite the screenwriters denying it to avoid legal repercussions. Brilliant stroke of luck if their claim is true. The sequel, "Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey", is not very good but features a hysterical performance by William Sadler as the Grim Reaper by way of Ingmar Bergman! He's worth the price of admission! The trilogy caps off with a surprisingly well-done reunion film made thirty years later called "Bill and Ted Face the Music"! The duo returns as do Ted's cop dad, Missy and Death all played by the same actors. The plot is clever and the pair finally achieve their destiny. How do these knuckleheads usher in a Pax Humanitas? Well, you've just got to see it!
12:03 This is considered one of the most scientifically accurate movies ever made, and not for this but in spite of this. For scientific accuracy, _Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure_ is right up there with _2001: A Space Odyssey_ and _Interstellar_ and _War Games_ and _The Andromeda Strain_ and _The Day The Earth Stood Still_ and even _The Right Stuff_ and _Apollo 13_ and _The Day After._ How??? Why??? When Bill asks Rufus how the phone booth works, most movies would drop a page of BS technobabble. If someone from 700 years ago asked you how a smartphone works, what would you say? Rufus answers: "Modern technology, William." And they just leave it at that. They don't even try to explain. It just works. Trust it.
I remember seeing this in the movies when I was 10. When Socrates calls Freud a geek the entire theater busted out laughing. Still one of my favorite comedies... like a lot of '80's flicks, it leaves you with such a positive feeling. FYI, Alex had had a few noteworthy roles, but went on to do a lot as a director and producer. From what I can tell, he and Keanu are still pals. It's worth watching the Bill and Ted sequels. They're bizarre in the best way.
I love how these two come of as complete buffoons, but you slowly realize through the movie how smart they truly are. Also, Addie, there are 2 sequels to watch.
When my daughter took a class trip to Athens, she and a friend recreated the "Dust. Wind. Dude." scene. And they were referring to the philosopher as So-Crates Johnson. Most classmates had no clue, but a few of the adult chaperones knew.
It's me again Addie. When Abraham Lincoln began his closing address, "Four score and seven minutes ago,"it happens about the 87 minute mark of our feature. Party on dudette.
The "so many people in a phone booth" is a reference to "phone booth stuffing", a fad that happened after WWII. People stuffed cars too. For Bill and Ted, it would have been something their parents and grandparents did for fun.
There are so many little touches that make the humor. For instance, when they crash in to get Beethoven, everyone turns towards the sound of the crash....except for Beethoven, who, of course, is deaf. One of the writers said that after this movie came out, he got a lot of letters from teachers and they fell into two categories. One was from history teachers, who said that they loved the influence this movie had on the interest in history. The other others were from English teachers who absolutely hated the movie because of it's influence on the kids' language. Also, Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter actually became great friends after meeting in this film. Keanu Reeves once commented that it's really funny to see people's reaction to them being out together in public. They're like "Hey, it's Bill and Ted!"
This is one of my favorite movies. Fun, incredibly rewatchable, and under the silliness so smart. There are so many great little touches that aren't pointed out by the plot or the dialogue but are a great chuckle if you know. For example, when they first meet Joan of Arc (known for claiming to have spoken to God, or at least one of His messengers), Ted reaches his hand forth to her, and she reaches up toward him - in the exact positions of the hands of Man and God in the scene from the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. Or, when Billy and Socrates are trying to pick up girls in the mall, and "Siggy" shows up, he's holding a corn dog, that most phallic of snacks. And when the girls mock him and call him a geek, the corn dog sags, going limp. Or, Napoleon putting his hand inside his coat (as he was famed for doing) because he injured it while bowling. Stuff like that. And so many great lines. For years afterward, anytime something weird was going on, I or one of my friends would inevitably say, "Strange things are afoot at the Circle K." Also, it has one of my favorite soundtracks. It's what I call a "smart stupid movie". On the surface, it's dumb, but underneath so much wit lurks. Another movie from that category, that I wish someone would react to (hopefully one who gets the humor) is a movie by an Australian guy named Yahoo Serious, called "Young Einstein". It follows the adventures of young Albert Einstein, who grew up on his parents' apple ranch in Tasmania, but after discovering the formula to put bubbles in beer, is sent to the mainland to go to the patent office. Yes, it's absolutely as silly as it sounds, but again has so much wit running through it. And coincidentally, a great all-Australian soundtrack, featuring a track from Big Pig, the group that did the song from the beginning of Bill and Ted.
Bill and Ted are such best friends who always look on the positive side of things no matter the situation. You should definitely watch Bogus Journey and Face the Music!

this is still praised as one of the best time travel making sense movies. they warn about the watch but he forgets just like why he reminds himself. the tv show isnt too bad either
I've seen this a thousand times and I just now realized that when Rufus tells them that the "clock in San Dimas is always running" isn't actually true. GHENKIS KHAN: The Actor that played him was in "Die Hard"... He was the Terrorist that took the Candy bar!
JOAN OF ARC was played by Jane Wiedlin, The Bassist for THE GO-GO'S!
*Rhythm guitarist. Kathy Valentine was their bass player.
I admire the work that went into creating the costumes and the set pieces. They really made the different time periods look authentic.
I really love this 80's classic, and remember seeing it in 1989 when I was 14. Suddenly I feel old. 😅
So happy you enjoyed it Addie. Bill and Ted's mission would have been much less crowded/easier if they had a different time traveling phone booth aka Dr Who's Tardis.
In an alternate reality, Ted does get sent to Military school, and becomes John Wick. While Bill goes to Santa Carla, and gets turned into a vampire.
The close-up of Rufus playing the guitar, in the shot of just the guitar, was actually Eddie Van Halen playing it.
12:03 This is considered one of the most scientifically accurate movies ever made, and not for this but in spite of this.
For scientific accuracy, _Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure_ is right up there with _2001: A Space Odyssey_ and _Interstellar_ and _War Games_ and _The Andromeda Strain_ and _The Day The Earth Stood Still_ and even _The Right Stuff_ and _Apollo 13_ and _The Day After._
How??? Why???
When Bill asks Rufus how the phone booth works, most movies would drop a page of BS technobabble.
If someone from 700 years ago asked you how a smartphone works, what would you say?
Rufus answers: "Modern technology, William."
And they just leave it at that.
They don't even try to explain.
It just works. Trust it.
The tricks with the time travel were actually pretty slick and intelligent, as well as playing on the history for laughs.
This is my 3rd favorite film of all time and my favorite Keanu Reeves movie.
The two sequels are worth watching. All 3 have a different feel from each other, all are good in their own way.
no, the third is trash, totally erases them as heroes replacing them with someone else
When my daughter took a class trip to Athens, she and a friend recreated the "Dust. Wind. Dude." scene. And they were referring to the philosopher as So-Crates Johnson. Most classmates had no clue, but a few of the adult chaperones knew.
In The Matrix, when Neo goes "woah", it's hard not to think of him as Ted.
There may also be a little Doctor Who in there. It is not bigger on the inside, or is it.
"The dude at the beginning of the movie..."
Oh George, how soon they forget.
And coincidentally, a great all-Australian soundtrack, featuring a track from Big Pig, the group that did the song from the beginning of Bill and Ted.
the Nineties were such a great time for "smart stupid movies". Also see: Romy & Michelle's High School Reunion.
This film series is one of my favourite comedies. It's so wholesome and hilarious. Be Excellent to Each Other and Party on Dudes.
Such a classic. Bill and Ted are considered by some to be the original himbos, lol. Great reaction!
The music from the future visit legit got me through high school alive. What a moment.
I love the part where Billy and Socrates were flirting with those girls in the mall...and then Freud shows up holding a corn dog. LOL!
Bill and Ted are such best friends who always look on the positive side of things no matter the situation. You should definitely watch Bogus Journey and Face the Music!
Yes!! Please do the sequel as well, Bill an Teds Bogus Journey :)
Despite the title, it is also excellent! 🎸
the ONLY sequel!
Glad you liked this one, now you need to see the rest of the Trilogy!!!! Yes its a Trilogy even though there is a huge gap between the second and third!!! Enjoy!!!
You should check out the sequel Bill & Ted’s Bogus Adventure
I taught kids like Bill and Ted. In all honesty, they were some of my favorite students.
Lol thus is where I learned of Kanno Reeves. When I see him in the movies since in my head all I ever hear is "We got to save the Princesses "
I love this entire trilogy.
The fact that Napoleon went to the waterpark Waterloo is hilarious because of the Battle of Waterloo that Napoleon fought in
For anyone who is curious, the song we hear during the future scene is called In Time by Robbie Robb.
Yes. Absolutely. This is my sixth favorite film of all time and my favorite Keanu Reeves movie. I'm glad you're doing this movie. It's so good! It's really dumb and all over the place, but that what makes it so good. Here's to hoping you do more movies like this.
I love how you yell "Heyyy" when they air guitar.
Alex Winter was also in Lost Boys with Keifer Sutherland
*Excellent!!* 🎸
I often cite the mantra "Be excellent to each other.. and party on dudes!" as a simple rule to live life by that could replace all organised religions and bring peace and harmony to the world. It just does so much with so little!
Addie, I enjoyed your reaction to this video. I am really glad that you liked it. This movie came out in 1989, could you also do reaction videos to the other 2 movies?
Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey-1991
Bill & Ted Face the Music-2020
I loved that George Carlin was in this movie! He had a bit in his stand up shows where he broke the 10 Commandments down to 2 fundamental rules which basically amounted to:
1) Be excellent to each other.
2) Party on, dudes!
When I was in 8th/9th grade summer school my History teacher made us watch Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure.
I'll never forget it because our final test was on the movie and I got an A.
I hope that you finish the trilogy.
They're great comedy films.
Excellent reaction, Addie! One of my all time favorite movie of Bill & Ted! I always quote and reenact the same gestures as how Bill & Ted did in the movies! There are three movies in total, but this film still holds great in my heart growing up, lol! Party on, Dudes!!
This movie is a treasure. And it is capped off beautifully by George Carlin RIP.
Closing out a most bogus day, I am stoked that this movie held up for you. I remember loving it when I was your age, when it was brand new. I would have feared it wouldn’t have aged well. Thanks for the most excellent reaction; party on, righteous babe!
If you love this movie... you will REALLY LOVE the sequel "Bill And Ted's Bogus Journey" Rare case where the sequel is better! Plus.. they just did a 3rd movie only a few years ago.. also pretty good!
Be excellent to each other..
Now you absolutely have to watch the sequels!
One thing to note Addie is that two actual musicians played roles in this movie.
Jane Wiedlin of the Go-Go's was Joan of Arc and Clarence Clemons of Bruce Springsteen's E-Street Band was one of the floating leaders from the future.
Also John Waybill of the Tubes was a leader in the future.
Woah.
Alex Winter was also one of the vampires in the Lost boys!!
I was 20 years old when I first saw this, I didn't want to watch it at first because I thought it was a kid's movie. I was instantly hooked and I laughed my rear off that day.
If you loved this, you should definitely watch the sequels, too. Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey (1991) and Bill & Ted Face The Music (2020).
My brother and I can quote this movie we watched it so many times as kids... It's also where we got most of our vocabulary from lol
Be Excellent to Addie ! Party On Dudes !
As a side note Joan of Arc was played by Jane Wiedlin of the band The Go-Go's .
Oh, the Singing Telegram. 😊
@@Deathbird_Mitch Yes, Clue.
Joan of Arc was the sweet Jane Weidlen from the Go Go s
Addie, i definitely recommend more Keanu Reeves movies Speed and Point Break are my personal favorite Keanu films.
It's a silly movie and one of my absolute favorites of all time. He's no longer with us, but for a very long time I had a cat named Socrates Johnson in honor of the movie.
This movie may have even had some influence on me studying history in college.
Hi Addie, i remember wathcing this when i was young around 15-16. my friend and I both played guitar and we identified with that musician part. Anyway, i really love this movie it si such a fun ride or "Excellent Adventure" as they say. I hope you watch the sequel, "Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey". Thanks for watching this!!
14:00 It's safe to assume that since Bill & Ted become the "Great Ones" that all the music they listen to in the future would be their band, Wyld Stallyns...which means the "excellent music" that we hear when B & T arrive in the future is actually them...if I'm right, I always thought it was a cool idea.
The Battle of Waterloo was the downfall of Napoleon. That's how they knew he'd be at the water park.
this is still praised as one of the best time travel making sense movies.
they warn about the watch but he forgets just like why he reminds himself.
the tv show isnt too bad either
I've seen this a thousand times and I just now realized that when Rufus tells them that the "clock in San Dimas is always running" isn't actually true. I think it was written into the script so there would still be a time crunch. However, when they go back to Sam Dimas after collecting a bunch of historical figures, they show up and interact with their previous selves at the Circle K. So in fact, they no only didn't lose any time on their adventures, but they gained a few minutes.
