Funny thing is, many modern viewers have trouble imagining Keanu Reaves as anything other than Neo or John Wick. But before the Matrix, most people had trouble seeing Keanu as anything other than Ted.
Yes! I remember in the 90's when Keanu started branching out into other genres, people were saying, "That stoner kid from Bill and Ted?" It was such a weird shift seeing him become a romantic lead, he was such a convincing "dude".
The back of the “The Matrix” box even just said “whoa-Keanu Reeves” as a selling point😆True, he says it in the Matrix as well, but it was clearly a reference, especially to what you mentioned 🙂
Unless you seen movies like River's Edge, Permanent Record and The Prince of Pennsylvania. Although, they're not far off from Ted. Ted just in a different scenario. lol
I love how these guys are the physical embodiment if absolute positivity. Also, I think it's funny that despite them supposedly being dumb, they have really great vocabulary, with words like Triumphant, Bogus and Heinous.
There's a truck in my city out here in California that has a huge "BE EXCELLENT" decal on the back window, with the silhouette of Bill and Ted each on the outer side of the text, lmao. Always loved seeing that around town these days. It's such a fun vibe and reference.
They are the physical embodiment of sheer positivity. I mean, their stated philosophy in life is for everyone to just be good to one another and have fun
Adding to the excellence of this film, Jane Wiedlin of The Go Go's plays Joan of Arc, and The Three Most Important People in the World are played by Martha Davis of The Motels, Fee Waybill of The Tubes, and in the center, legendary saxophonist Clarence Clemons of The E-street Band.
He had his own sketch comedy series on MTV after this movie came out, and I can't type the name of it because of youtube's filters, but it was a fantastic show. Do a search for 'Alex Winters' together with the word 'Lockjaw' to see one of the sketches, that is if it's still here on youtube.
Lol. For us, Ted going on to do Dracula and Point Break and Speed and the Matrix and John Wick was the wild ride. Alex Winter fell away from acting after a while and went into directing and producing, particularly theater, which was one of his passions. For reprising Bill in the third film, he said he hadn't acted in so long that he actually took, I believe, some acting lessons in order to get back into it.
Two things: 1. At no point does Rufus ever tell them his name, they only get it from themselves. This is referred to in temporal concepts as the bootstrap paradox, where information is shared between individuals via time travel with the knowledge only being known because someone who knew it introduced it in the past so they’d learn it later. 2. Bill and Ted basically, during the rescue, weaponize the idea of the predestination concept, in essence proving they cannot lose because they have already succeeded and were able to go back and help to begin with.
Bill and Ted telling each other information is the bootstrap paradox, but the naming of Rufus is actually an ontological paradox, because the information has no discernible original source. In contrast, the information “you guys are going to have a most excellent adventure through time” is not an ontological paradox because it is directly experienced by Bill and Ted. As another example, Marty McFly getting his parents together is a bootstrap paradox, while the song “Johnny B. Goode” is an ontological paradox, since Marty didn’t invent it, he learned it from Chuck Berry, but Chuck Berry didn’t invent it, he learned it (over the phone) from Marty.
Also a nice touch of foreshadowing hinting at the bootstrap paradox was at the beginning when they talk about the catch-22 of getting Eddie Van Halen in the band.
It can get even freakier. In Timerider: The Adventure of Lyle Swann, he has a pendant that has been in his family for generations. It's said that his great, great grandmother stole it from his great, great grandfather. At the end of the movie, the woman he fell in love with snatches it from him before he's taken back to the present, making him his own ancestor. Not only that, but where did the pendant come from originally?
The great thing about time travel is that, since it isn't actually possible, you can do whatevr you want. Most people agonize about justifying every detail, but this movie just doesn't care, and does what serves the story. Bill and Ted accept the idea implicitly and make no effort to blend in anywhere they go, cheerfully assuming that it's all cool. It's genius, and a great palate cleanser when you get too serious about science fiction and/or movies. 😄
@@Serai3 I once read short story about time travel. A scientist creates a small, prototype time machine, which he demonstrates to his friends. He sends it a few minutes into the future and it works perfectly. He then says that in five minutes, he'll send it back in time five minutes, and right on cue the time machine appears. His friend asks, now that the machine has already appeared, what would happen if he decided NOT to send it back. The scientist thinks this is an interesting question and decides to find out. This causes the entire universe to blink out of existence. :)
Dude, seriously? I'm 44. I grew up with these movies. I saw the sequel in theater. I actually hate the sequel. I've seen Excellent Adventure at least 100 times, I've seen Bogus Journey maybe 5. It never gets good. Even if you disagree with me, "one of the greatest sequels of all time", is beyond exaggeration.
I have loved Bill and Ted Excellent Adventure since I was a kid. And it really is a movie you can just sit down and watch anytime you find it on. In my 8rd grade school year. We watched it in the beginning of the school year because they wanted to remind us to “Be Excellent to either other”
So glad you guys enjoyed this. An old school favorite of mine (I saw this in the theater as a freshman in college when it was released). And I'm sorry but "BAM STROKER" just made my entire day LOL
What attracted Napoleon to Waterloo, the water park, was that it's also the name of a city in France and the location of the Battle of Waterloo (where Napoleon lost, by the way).
I actually saw a bunch of George Carlin's comedy shows from my dad's collection before I ever saw this movie, and out of everything, I was most excited to see him in the movie. What makes this movie so great is that it knows what it is, and it leans into the fun and goofiness of it without overdoing it or taking itself too seriously. Tons of fun to watch. If you can, I'd recommend watching the other two. I think this one is the best, but they were all very entertaining.
What I love about this trilogy is that Bill and Ted are just good guys. There's no cynicism whatsoever. And that's really refreshing. I'd call it the "Ted Lasso effect".
You guys gotta do all three. They're all just good, silly fun. And the third is especially impressive considering it came 30 years after the second. 🤘🏼
Keanu has played so many different roles in so many different genres. He did a ton of 80s teen TV stuff from music videos to Dinsey, but he's done a surprising amount of drama which is just about even with his action roles, like 45%Action/adventure, 45%Drama/romance, 10% other whacky/zaney stuff. I basically grew up watching his movies right along side all the other big names in hollywood, since 4th grade. Another great adventure type movie of his you probably haven't seen is Johnny Mnemonic; a cyberpunk style thriller. Enjoy!
The change in acting styles by Keanu was because he didn’t want to be typed cast as a Ted style. He was often casted as this type in person in other roles. Doing Point Break was what got him out of this typed casting.
@@mblackwl Those reviews were accurate. He did a good job, but it was very ‘traditional stage with Ted’s cadence’ compared to all the other actors in the film. (Stacked cast!)
When you guys come up to one of my favorite movies of all time that I have watched countless times since being a kid, it's this weird mixture of sadness and excitement. Needless to say, I love your reactions!
You have to watch part 2! And I would recommend both Waynes World movies aswell, I loved them as a teenager and they were a big influence for my love of amateur video making! Watching them now is basically like watching the prototype of a youtuber.. additionally to humor that was way ahead of its time and an awesome soundtrack!
The Candy Gram joke was a reference to a classic Saturday Night Live sketch from the very first season. It was the Land Shark sketches starring Chevy Chase as the Land Shark who got people to open their doors by claiming to be a Candy Gram.
As a kid, my parents took my brother and I to watch Bill and Ted’s excellent adventure and the burbs the night they came out, February 17, 1989. It was a good night.
The waterpark was filmed at an amusement place in Mesa Arizona outside Phoenix. We used to go mini-golfing there a lot. Good times. Not sure if it's still open. That entire metroplex has changed vastly since I graduated and left there in the mid-90s.
I figured you guys would like it, and happy you did! 😁 Keanu was probably one of my first celebrity crushes, from this movie lmao. Every time I revisit this movie, I notice a new ridiculous and hilarious historical “reference.” Fun reaction!
Ah the 80s. When Billy the Kid can shoot a gun in the mall and in a school and it doesn't make the news, jokes about sleeping with you're friend's mom, And where parents are the villians!!! Ex-ce-llent!
The second one if one of my all time favs. I highly suggest watching them kinda close to each other cause they are all linked and you don't want to forget some of the characters.
Great reaction both, took me right back to near when I left school. Fun fact, when Rufus plays guitar at the end, it was actually none other than Eddie Van Halen.
Fun fact abou that Circle K, it was filmed in Phoenix, AZ where I live and it just closed down not too long ago. It was on the news that the film Bill and Ted was filmed and encouraged fans of the movie to visit the location one last time before it was demolised.
Not sure if anyone else mentioned it, but Alex Winter and Keanu Reeves are also in a crazy comedy called "Freaked', that also has a bunch of famous actors, mostly in bit roles. I believe the whole movie is on RUclips somewhere.
You guys look like you really enjoyed this. It's such a fun film. You do have to watch it a few times before you catch all the little historical references. Like when they're talking about where Napoleon is and they determined it must be Waterloo which of course is reference to the Battle of Waterloo....Napoleon against the Duke of Wellington which eventually led to the fall of Napoleon control over Europe. Most of these went over my head when I was a teenager when this film came out. It's a fun way for people to learn a little bit about history. The other two are fun films as well. I hope you watch them as well.
They filmed this in my hometown of Phoenix Arizona! Metro Center, which they filmed the mall scenes, sadly no longer exists. But it was a great experience while it lasted.
It was so much fun seeing this again and also seeing a real young Keanu Reeves,it's almost hard to believe that he is John Wick and Constantine.Well done you two.Regards from N.Z.
Well, Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter already reprised their roles in face the music. Mike Myers and Dana Carvey are also still around. It could still happen!
24:54 Of course, the Billy Madison line, "Knibb High football rules!" was a call back to the dumb jock saying "San Dimas high school football rules!" in this movie. 😂😂
One of Napoleon's most famous battles was at a place called "Waterloo", which the water park is named after, that's why he goes there. ABBA, the band, has a song about it too that's really famous.
Genghis Khan is played by legendary stuntman and martial artist Al Leong. he was in a TON of films and tv shows through out the 80s and 90's. always playing a henchman. He was in Die Hard, Lethal Weapon 1, My Science Project, They live, and many more. His role here is actually one of the few roles where he didn't die. lol
Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey is my favourite movie of all time. You ABSOLUTELY have to watch that one too. It's SO ridiculous and funny. It makes this one seem serious by comparison.
There are 2 sequels or follow up movies to “Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure”, “Bill and Ted’s Bogus Journey”, “Bill and Ted Face The Music” but I don’t know if the sequels were as well received as the original movie in the “Bill and Ted” trilogy. The guy staring opposite of Keanu Reeves as the other half of wild Stallions is Alex winter. Great reaction. Continue to love and enjoy your movie reactions TBR and Samantha.
This movie has a genius time travel concept with the keys. If every person on the planet reminded themselves in some way to do something if they invented time travel, and it happened, they will have invented time travel.
I'm from san dimas, there is no mall, there is a waterpark, but the one in the movie is actually in arizona. they did film the circle k shot there, but that circle k has been torn down and moved since then.
If you watch Parenthood, there is a lot of Ted in Keanu's character. When you watch this again, notice all of the gestural sexual innuendos Sigmund Freud makes. The two people who served Napoleon ice cream were the writers.
1 of my all time favorite comedy series. Bogus Journey is probably my favorite. Definitely do all 3 movies. You'll love them all. Also Wayne's World 1 & 2
The craziest thing about this movie to me is that several of their traveling companions would be killed in one way or another probably not that long after they got back. Joan of Arc, Socrates, Billy the Kid and Lincoln. Most horrifically Joan of Arc would be burned alive at the stake a few years later. I wonder if they considered doing anything with that in the film or if they figured that would be too much of a downer lol.
The mall they go to is Metro Center, my childhood mall. That was THE mall for all of us growing up. I knew all those stores and it's a shame it closed a few years ago.
WHOA! one of my #1 faves, so thrilled y'all are watching! they made a bill n ted cartoon series in the early 90s too. Also, absolute yes to the sequels and to Wayne's world.
I'm one of those old folks who saw this in the theater in 1989 (I was a sophomore in high school, the perfect age for it, lol). Loved it, and still do! Looking foward to seeing your further reactions to the sequels.
This was not Keanu's first role. He started acting in Canada, and had made 11 films before this. The only one that was well known was "River's Edge", which is a very different kind of film, though Keanu plays a similar character. He was playing that guy for quite a few years - you have no idea how weird it is for those of us who knew of him coming up to see him as thd dour, violent character most people know now. For the first few years of his career, he was known as a complete airhead, cheerful and oblivious. The word "himbo" was coined specifically to describe him. (He isn't, but he rarely takes the trouble to try and disabuse people of the notion that he's dumb. I think he enjoys it.) Alex only acted in a few films, after which he went into directing, which was his original goal. He and Keanu have been firm friends ever since doing this film. (You can see audition tapes for it here on YT, with both of them pairing off with other actors to try for the roles.)
funny thing... the time machine was going to be a van...but with the success of the De Lorean as the time machine in Back To The Future, they didn't want to be compared... so they turned to the "phone booth"... yeah... you said it... Dr Who...
The movie´s theme song still brings me to tears. You are a teenager in the 80´s. You study History and you learn about all the tribulation, suffering, pain, violence, injustice and poverty that tens of billions of people have experienced for some three hundred thousand years. You yourself live in a timewhen humans created weapons so powerful that most - maybe all- life on earth could be obliterated in a matter of hours. You fear you will live long enough to see the world end in a nuclear holocaust or in an enviromental catastrophe. You have nightmares about it. In order to not become completely insane or desperate, you try to find any form of escapism that can help you cope. Including dreams of a future time when humans will learn to live in peace and harmony, and that your action as a simple 80´s teenager may make a difference for that transformation.
I was in high school in Phoenix when this was made, and several scenes were filmed in Phoenix and surrounding areas. The mall was MetroCenter Mall, the external of the high school was Coronado High School in Scottsdale, the interior of the auditorium at the end was East High School (which has since been demolished), Waterloop was Golfland Sunsplash in Mesa, the bowling alley was close to ASU in Tempe, and the Circle K was in Tempe.
I'd never heard of this movie before I watched this for the first time a few years after it came out, when I was about 13. I never laughed so much in my life. It was perfect for someone that age and at that time.
Ghengis Khan beating the shit out of that mannequin will ALWAYS be funny! :D I love the second movie even more :) By the way, I hope you watch more movies off of that poll!!!! I've seen all of the movies listed, other than Stardust. I especially love Time Bandits and 13th Warrior. I've never seen anyone on RUclips react to either of those!
I love that since your introduction to Keanu has been in his action star phase that it’s hard for you so wrap your head around him as Ted. I’m of an age that it was the total opposite and no matter what he did to try and escape the ‘valley dude’ persona, all I could ever hear in my head was him as Ted.
This is one of my favorite film franchises. The movies have tons of heart and never fail to make you laugh. I was so excited to finally see the 3rd film since it was talked about for years. Party on, dudes!
I like that it won the "Adventure" poll. It's really not an adventure film, but a 100% comedy. It just has "Adventure" in the name, but I guess that was enough to win the poll.😆
This one is my favorite of the three, but the second one is really good, too! The reason Napoleon went to Waterloo waterpark and B&T knew he'd be there was because in real history, Napoleon's final battle was the battle of Waterloo, where (IIRC) he failed and got exiled.
Funny thing is, many modern viewers have trouble imagining Keanu Reaves as anything other than Neo or John Wick. But before the Matrix, most people had trouble seeing Keanu as anything other than Ted.

Yup. I grew up in the 80s and up until Speed, he still wasn’t really taken seriously in a movie lol.
The back of the “The Matrix” box even just said “whoa-Keanu Reeves” as a selling point😆True, he says it in the Matrix as well, but it was clearly a reference, especially to what you mentioned 🙂
For me it was Point Break.

I hope you watch them as well.
Sigmund Freud holding a corn dog is one of the greatest sight gags I have ever seen. 😆
Great reaction from a great couple, to a whimsically great move... Be excellent to each other and PARTY ON!!!
I would have LOVED to see a Wayne's World/Bill & Ted Crossover. Those four guys would have been the best of friends had they met.
Pretty much the Mt Rushmore of stoners who weren't stoners.
Keanu was stopping bank robbers and keeping busses from blowing up at that time. The timing never would have worked.
Well, Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter already reprised their roles in face the music. Mike Myers and Dana Carvey are also still around.
It could still happen!
Bogus Journey (the second movie) is my favourite in the series. I hope you continue to party on!
Bill and Ted are two of the most lovable characters ever committed to film. You have to see "Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey" next.
I am so glad, that I'm not so old, where people still remembers "phone booth"
24:54 Of course, the Billy Madison line, "Knibb High football rules!" was a call back to the dumb jock saying "San Dimas high school football rules!" in this movie. 😂😂
I literally did a spit take when I saw the thumbnail. Crazy to think there's people who've never seen the movie!
Why is that crazy exactly? The movie came out in 1989, it is now 2023, many people were not even born yet when this came out.
@@JohnGraves1985 That does not make any sense.
Are you trying to say that nobody watches movies that came out before they were born?
Excellent 🎸🎶
There are 2 sequels or follow up movies to “Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure”, “Bill and Ted’s Bogus Journey”, “Bill and Ted Face The Music” but I don’t know if the sequels were as well received as the original movie in the “Bill and Ted” trilogy. The guy staring opposite of Keanu Reeves as the other half of wild Stallions is Alex winter. Great reaction. Continue to love and enjoy your movie reactions TBR and Samantha.
Bogus Journey is widely considered to be better than Excellent Adventure.
This movie has a genius time travel concept with the keys.
If every person on the planet reminded themselves in some way to do something if they invented time travel, and it happened, they will have invented time travel.
This is the first role I saw Keanu Reaves in.. he'll always be Ted to me.
Great reaction and congratulations on the precious new addition to your family!
1 of my all time favorite comedy series. Bogus Journey is probably my favorite. Definitely do all 3 movies. You'll love them all. Also Wayne's World 1 & 2
Carlin is a hero of mine, but who cares
@@howardb.6205 I cared about George Carlin; R.I.P. to that Comedy Legend!
Yeah, Bogus Journey is my favorite too.
There's also a cartoon...
William Sadler as death…😂🤣👌
The craziest thing about this movie to me is that several of their traveling companions would be killed in one way or another probably not that long after they got back. Joan of Arc, Socrates, Billy the Kid and Lincoln. Most horrifically Joan of Arc would be burned alive at the stake a few years later. I wonder if they considered doing anything with that in the film or if they figured that would be too much of a downer lol.
The mall they go to is Metro Center, my childhood mall. That was THE mall for all of us growing up. I knew all those stores and it's a shame it closed a few years ago.
This movie introduced me to Keanu Reeves. That dude has done it all, it's crazy.
WHOA! one of my #1 faves, so thrilled y'all are watching! they made a bill n ted cartoon series in the early 90s too.
I think he enjoys it.)
Alex only acted in a few films, after which he went into directing, which was his original goal. He and Keanu have been firm friends ever since doing this film. (You can see audition tapes for it here on YT, with both of them pairing off with other actors to try for the roles.)
Congratulations on your baby! 💕❤💕
RIP, Eddie Van Halen.
He never got the chance to play with Wyld Stallyns
One of my favorites growing up, the sequel is just as excellent
funny thing... the time machine was going to be a van...but with the success of the De Lorean as the time machine in Back To The Future, they didn't want to be compared... so they turned to the "phone booth"... yeah... you said it...
This is one of my favorite movies...period. If you haven't watched Neverending Story, do it, its great. Hope the baby is ok. Love you guys.
Omg I was 18 when this came out. I loved it then and I still love it now.
I was in high school in Phoenix when this was made, and several scenes were filmed in Phoenix and surrounding areas. The mall was MetroCenter Mall, the external of the high school was Coronado High School in Scottsdale, the interior of the auditorium at the end was East High School (which has since been demolished), Waterloop was Golfland Sunsplash in Mesa, the bowling alley was close to ASU in Tempe, and the Circle K was in Tempe.
yesssss! I love all your reactions but the comedies are always my fave and this is another excellent choice! thanks for the laughs and party on dudes!
Would love to see someone do Time Bandits
13th warrior is awesome.
Bill and Ted had their own cereal, Saturday morning cartoon, and Marvel Comic back in the early 90s.
80s had some of the best teen comedy
I love that since your introduction to Keanu has been in his action star phase that it’s hard for you so wrap your head around him as Ted. I’m of an age that it was the total opposite and no matter what he did to try and escape the ‘valley dude’ persona, all I could ever hear in my head was him as Ted.
Like, you killed my dog dude. Moooost heinous!
I really enjoyed this movie. It's the first time I've watched it, even though I'm 71 years old. So funny! Your reactions were great, too!
The names they give Missy are so funny. Dave Beeth Oven, So-Crates Johnson, Bob Ghengis Khan... and Abraham Lincoln
Yay I was waiting for this all day now my night is complete thank you Tbr Schmitt and Samantha 🥰❤️✌️☺️
Fun fact, Eddie van Halen does appear in the movie as the hands of Rufus for his solo.
Definitely watch the other two. I was initially very sceptical that the 3rd would be any good, but it's actually pretty decent aswell.
My mom took me to the theater when I was 7 when it came out. One of my favorites growing up.
Love your channel, love your reactions. You two are just so wholesome and down to earth!
@natepeace1737 Second to Jay and Amber from the Rob Squad channels in terms of wholeness😊
I saw a meme once that said John Wick was from the timeline where Ted went to the military academy. Mind blowing.
This is definitely the best of the three IMO, Wayne's world is pretty funny too
When I was in middle school everybody was an expert in air guitars and quoted this movie all the time.
The irony that Napoleon is enjoying the Waterloo Water Park.❤
Excellent dudes, cool reaction as always Schmitt & Samantha, you both take care
The mall they are in is Metro Center in Phoenix AZ. It is currently being demolished
More Bill and Ted movies please!
