"THE Joan Wilder?!" has lived rent free in my head since I was a kid. Alfonso Arau also plays a great character in Three Amigos, with a few more iconic lines, which is a classic goofy 80's comedy with Chevy Chase, Martin Short, and Steve Martin that definitely should go on your list
The film with Alfonso Arau they should see, albeit with him in supporting role, is The Wild Bunch by Sam Peckinpah. One of the greatest films ever made, and hugely influential to many subsequent directors of action movies.
If the TBR folks ever watch Fatal Attraction they should proceed watching it with The Big Chill. Just to see Glenn Close in something else first. The Big Chill is truly under rated.

This is the movie that saved Robert Zemekis career. He had had a couple of flops in a row and this was his last chance. Based on the success of this he got "Back to the Future", then "Who Framed Roger Rabbit", the "Back to the Future" sequels. After that he could pretty much do whatever he wanted. He was up there with Steven Spielberg. Also, Kathleen Turner had fantastic chemistry with all her romantic leads, while still being funny. Besides the sequel, she and Michael Douglas also co-starred in "The War of the Roses".
I am actually amazed that a few sequels were not made for this great movie. They just made one more. Missed opportunity, but Zemeckis got tied up in the Back to the Future trilogy and only one sequel ended up being made. I think Michael Douglas missed his calling in action adventure/thriller films. In the very few he did he is always great.
Be sure to watch the sequel THE JEWEL OF THE NILE There were talks of a third and fourth film, THE CRIMSON EAGLE and RACING THE MONSOON, but both would be shelved as of 1997, as Michael Douglas lost interest. A live action series based on the movie is in development with Gerard Butler starring and producing the project. It was originally going to be a reboot directed by Kathryn Bigelow.

I thought "Jewel of the Nile" was okay. But it was more corny than awesome. Pretty clear that, as sequels go, it's definitely on the lower end of the spectrum. But "Romancing the Stone" will always be one of the best pure action/romances ever produced!
Danny directs War of the Roses, and it has a lot of dark humor he would later bring more heavily in Death To Smootchy and many episodes of Always Sunny.

Alfonso Arau, the actor who played the drug lord with the "Little Mule", is great in the 80's comedy classic "Three Amigos", starring Steve Martin, Chevy Chase & Martin Short. You definitely need to check that one out!
There's also a sequel to this movie called 'The Jewel of the Nile'. If you wanna watch more this type of movies i can recommend the first 2 Crocodile Dundee movies, if you haven't watched them yet.
I'd recommend *Bird On A Wire* with Mel Gibson and Goldie Hawn as another great action/comedy that not enough people seem to remember. One of the best imho.
Romancing the Stone was director Robert Zemeckis' very first hit movie after directing two unsuccessful comedies - the Beatlemania-themed comedy 'I Wanna Hold Your Hand' and the Kurt Russell comedy 'Used Cars.' The screenplay was written in 1979 by screenwriter Diane Thomas, and was her only completed screenplay. Thomas tragically died in a car accident the year after Romancing the Stone was released. The success of Romancing the Stone is also what allowed Robert Zemeckis to make Back to the Future, which was written in 1980 and was the film he intended to make after Used Cars.
This movie NEVER gets old! My whole family loves it. I don't think a year has gone by, since 1984, that one of us hasn't piped up, out of nowhere, and said, "THE Joan Wilder?" Yes, Joan ends up being more heroine than damsel and, frankly, Jack is in peril almost as much as she is, throughout the movie. Once she gets over her initial shock of being so far out of her element, Joan is loving the adventure she's sharing with Jack. Even as she's "driving" down the river and heading for a waterfall, she's grinning ear to ear. Just another example of the 80s doing right by their heroines on the big screen.
*"He made shoes out of it. He f××ked that thing up!!"* - TBR's unpredictable random glee and phrases always catch my daughter (14 tomorrow) off-guard and crack her up.

Micheal Douglas and Danny DeVito were roommates in college. There is a sequel to this called Jewel of the Nile Kathleen Turner is good with Steve Martin in The Man With Two Brains Micheal Douglas, Kathleen Turner and Danny DeVito all starred together again in War of the Roses You can see more of Alfonso Arau (the guy with the Little Mule) in The Three Amigos More Micheal Douglas movies: Wall Street, Falling Down, The Game
If you want more of the three main actors, you should try the follow up movie to this "The Jewel of the Nile" and another Romcom they made, "The War of the Roses".
One of my favorite movies! It was filmed in Mexico because there was such a large threat of kidnapping in Columbia. The sequel, Jewel of theN ile, is a must watch. Michael Douglas and Danny Devito go way back. They were roommates in college.
Falling Down is a great movie, it also has Robert Duvall with both playing great characters. Douglas is completely in a different role than normal... highly recomended.
Hi guys, I would recommend The War of the Roses with both of them, and Danny Devito. Their chemistry during this movie was so good that the three made. Completely different movie together. It’s a movie about a marriage with some… problems. However, there’s lots of humor. It’s a dark comedy. It’s a forgotten gem, and it’s really good. Got great reviews back when it came out and it’s directed by Danny Devito himself.
Sylvester Stallone was originally gonna play Jack but according to him, during a heavy night of drinking, he called his agent to tell him to accept the movie but he got the name mixed up with another movie he was offered called Rhinestone. His agent accepted the Rhinestone offer and Stallone had to do Rhinestone instead of Romancing the Stone. Since Stallone declined last minute, Zemekis talked Michael Douglass to take the role as he was just a producer on the movie but luckily he was also a very experianced actor and had been in alot of movies/tv shows at the time and the rest is history.
Turner's first major role was in 1981's "Body Heat". THAT is a steamy, twisty little film noir gem I highly recommend. Enjoyed this reaction a great deal.
Sylvester Stallone was originally considered for the role of Jack Colton. Other actors who were considered were Burt Reynolds, Clint Eastwood, Paul Newman, and Christopher Reeve. Debra Winger was originally considered or the role of Joan Wilder.
Michael Douglas produced the Best Picture Oscar winner One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest...which I think you both have reacted to. I think... Congratulations BTW on the new little bundle of joy!
Probably because there were a LOT of that type of thriller in that period of time, about stalkers. That time also had movies like "The Hand That Rocks the Cradle," "Single White Female" etc all about stalkers.
Danny DeVito wouldn't be in Batman Returns for another 8 yerars, so the "Batman" reference was just coincidence. Oh "Wall Street" is what I think of as Michael Douglas's greatest film, but also he's amazing in "Falling Down". He plays a great (truly memorable) villain and/or antihero. The classic Kathleen Turner film is the more noir "Body Heat" from a few years before this.
The Colombian jungle was filmed in Sierra of Veracruz, México. Cartagena actually is Veracruz city and the fortress is San Juan de Ulua Fortress, Veracruz.
My mom took me to this when I was only three. I actually remember bits and pieces from back then. One of very few romcoms that I freely admit to enjoying and usually watch whenever it's on TV.
Michael Douglas, Kathleen Turner and Danny Davito were also all together again in The War of the Roses. Those 2 movies have been some of my favorites for as long as I can remember
Great reaction you two to this 80s classic....they did make a sequel 'The Jewel Of The Nile' (1985) - with Michael Douglas, Kathleen Turner & Danny DeVito returning.... also all 3 of them did make another movie together called 'The War Of The Roses' but it had nothing to do with the other two films (however it is also a fun watch nonetheless & definitely worth checking out 😁). Keep on keeping on with these movie reactions 😎👍
Alfonso Arau , who played Juan in this movie, with his “little mule” also played the infamous El Guapo in the three amigos movie with Chevy Chase, Steve Martin, and Martin Short… Also, as far as Michael Douglas movies go, I can highly recommend ‘Falling Down’ also starring Robert Duvall…! Fantastic movie!
I’d just like to give a shout out to the screenwriter, Diane Thomas, who was killed in a car accident the year after this came out and a month before the sequel was released. Gone too soon at 39.
Like so many others in the comments, this movie and its sequel, Jewel of the Nile, were staples of my movie watching childhood!!! It is awesome that you guys are watching it. I also recommend watching the “unofficial” third movie, “War of the Roses.” It is a different story and different characters, but it is the third team up of Douglas, Turner, & DeVito and is kind of an anti-rom com. “Serial Mom” is a fun horror comedy starring Kathleen Turner and was written & directed by John Waters
Great movie and I'm glad you guys reacted to it. Alfonso Arau (Juan, the smiling drug dealer super fan of Joan Wilder, the driver of "The Little Mule" is a world renowned director, producer, actor)) I saw this in the movies and it was awesome. The follow up is "Jewel of the Nile" and as for Michael Douglas react to "Falling Down" "The Game" or "Fatal Attraction" all excellent choices.
Was obsessed with this one as a kid. I'd pretend I was a character in the story in my backyard in the trees with my little toy shotgun. Will always be a special one
Michael Douglass produced One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. Kathleen Tutner was the voice of Jessica Rabbit in Who Framed Roger Rabbit? Michael and Danny Devomito were roommates when they were starting out.
Michael Douglas is the son of Kirk Douglas who was a huge star in the 50's and 60's. He appeared in just under 100 films in his career and lived to age 103 before passing away in 2020. A few of his more famous movies are: "Spartacus", "7 Days in May", "Ace in the Hole", and "Lust For Life" in which he portrayed Vincent Van Gogh. Burt Lancaster (Moonlight Graham in "Field of Dreams") co-starred with Kirk quite a few times in their prime.
There were a few Kirk Douglas roles in the 80s and 90s as well. The Fury (1978), directed by Brian DePalma, Saturn 3 (1980), a bonkers Alien ripoff with Harvey Keitel, Tough Guys (1986), with his buddy Burt Lancaster, Diamonds (1999), with Dan Aykroyd, and lastly It Runs In The Family featuring son Michael, grandson, Kirk's ex.
@@sannakarppinen4163It Runs In The Family, as mentioned. I haven't seen it yet, but I know that the whole titular family is played by current and former Douglases. It was made after Kirk had a stroke, but clearly they made that part of his character.
WALL STREET is an Awesome Michael Douglas, young Charlie Sheen movie! NOT the 2nd one, Money Never Sleeps with Shia LeBough.. I know I didn't spell that right... The first one is the Classic 80s "Greed Is Good" film!
I love this movie. Growing up it was an 80’s staple. And HBO played it all the time. But, it literally has everything action, adventure, comedy, romance, thrills … it’s perfect. And the score is one of a kind. The sequel isn’t as well rounded but is still a very good sequel. TBR & Samantha its time for y’all to find The Jewel Of The Nile.
The Game is so good, I hope you guys watch that one! Also, Romancing the Stone and Jewel of the Nile have been favorites of mine since I was a kid. Really fun to see this one pop up on here!
Fun Fact: Michael Douglas and Danny De Vito shared an apartment while both were studying acting, so are good friends. Oh, and Kathleen Turner was apparently not afraid to do a lot of her own stunts, and was game for the uncomfortable mud/river stuff, which impressed Michael Douglas!

Hey that's a good movie I use to have that movie.
I don't think a year has gone by, since 1984, that one of us hasn't piped up, out of nowhere, and said, "THE Joan Wilder?"
Yes, Joan ends up being more heroine than damsel and, frankly, Jack is in peril almost as much as she is, throughout the movie.
He f××ked that thing up!!"*
- TBR's unpredictable random glee and phrases always catch my daughter (14 tomorrow) off-guard and crack her up.
It's honestly astounding that he even FOUND that thing, in all that water! Killing it would have been the EASY part!! lol
Happy early birthday to your daughter!
@@TBRSchmittShe said thank you and congratulations to both of you.
Between Michael Douglas' mullet, a synthesizer heavy score, and Kathleen Turner shining in her blink, Zemeckis' movie is truly time capsule worthy.
Except it's not a mullet.
Amen to that ❤
@@Hexon66 I find the massive amount of mullet confusion bizarre but mildly amusing. Certainly a trendy accusation that's mostly incorrectly applied to just another man with long hair. Where's Wikipedia correcting misinformation when it's really needed?
There's a bit of party in back, but it doesn't look like business up front.
This sounds like a movie review from 15 years after the original release...
7:33 "Romeo! Goddamit!" 😆
i absolutely love when Sam gets scared. for a split second she gets sooo mad. 😠
(LOL) Guilty-Pleasure moments for Me too!👍
Micheal Douglas and Danny DeVito were roommates in college.
There is a sequel to this called Jewel of the Nile
Kathleen Turner is good with Steve Martin in The Man With Two Brains
Micheal Douglas, Kathleen Turner and Danny DeVito all starred together again in War of the Roses
You can see more of Alfonso Arau (the guy with the Little Mule) in The Three Amigos
More Micheal Douglas movies: Wall Street, Falling Down, The Game
This is one of my favorite reactions from you guys! I always stop in when you post something new - thanks for doing this one! 🙏🏼
Michael Douglas has been a movie producer for many years. He produced One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest with Jack Nicholson in 1975.
If you want more of the three main actors, you should try the follow up movie to this "The Jewel of the Nile" and another Romcom they made, "The War of the Roses".
I never thought of War of the Roses as a Rom Com. Pretty dark.
The guy with the 'Little Mule' truck is the same actor who played El Guapo in 'Three Amigos' :D
You have to watch Jewel of the Nile now. The brass section in this is forever burned in my brain. Fathoms of nostalgia.
One of my favorite movies! It was filmed in Mexico because there was such a large threat of kidnapping in Columbia. The sequel, Jewel of theN ile, is a must watch. Michael Douglas and Danny Devito go way back. They were roommates in college.
Personally I'll watch anything with Michael Douglas in even now,he's so versatile, comedy, action ,drama.
Falling Down, Basic Instinct, Wall Street, Coma, Black Rain, and The Game are all totally awesome Michael Douglas movies!
Michael Douglas was one of the biggest actors of the 80s and 90s. Fatal Attraction is the ultimate with him and Glenn Close. That is an amazing film.
Falling Down is a great movie, it also has Robert Duvall with both playing great characters. Douglas is completely in a different role than normal... highly recomended.
If you like their chemistry in a "romance" then "War of the Roses" would be great to see them together again...
Michael Douglas also produced One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest!
Love this movie, really great childhood classic gem
Wow, Stallone must be kicking himself in the ass on that one.
For Michael Douglas, "Fatal Attraction" is an awesome movie. Put it in a poll. It was huge at the time and I can't understand why it has faded away.
🐇
Agree
Oh yeah, the must do Fatal Attraction!
I think it's faded because despite being sold as a thriller, it's a more thoughtful, darker adult movie than its reputation suggests. Excellent film.
Probably because there were a LOT of that type of thriller in that period of time, about stalkers.
That time also had movies like "The Hand That Rocks the Cradle," "Single White Female" etc all about stalkers.
Ghostbusters fans will recognize Angelina as the late Kym Herrin. Her one moment in that movie is her floating over Dan Aykroyd.
4:21 "Danny DeVito! No way! 10/10 movie." 😆
daniel is actually 14 years old.
My mom took me to this when I was only three. I actually remember bits and pieces from back then. One of very few romcoms that I freely admit to enjoying and usually watch whenever it's on TV.
Great choice! Put War of the Roses on the list!
36:40 "definitely much more adventurey than rom-comy." -Sam
Michael Douglas : China Syndrome, Wall Street, A Chorus Line, Fatal Attraction, War of the Roses, Basic Instinct, Disclosure
Went and saw it in the theater and with the way this movie started we thought we were in the wrong theater and almost got up to go double check.
18:53 that's what she said.
You should definitely react to “the war of the roses,” which also had Douglas and Turner. Also, directed by Danny Devitio.
War of the Roses is excellent
@@jrobwoo688 Agreed.
The perfect comedy. Bray
❤oh yeah. Excellent dark comedy.
I remember this one. It was fun to watch again.
I’d just like to give a shout out to the screenwriter, Diane Thomas, who was killed in a car accident the year after this came out and a month before the sequel was released. Gone too soon at 39.
My favorite Michael Douglas movies are The ghost and the darkness, Wall Street, Falling down, Basic instinct and War of the roses.
The director of this film has stated that due to the success of this film, he was able to make Back to the Future.
I’m so glad you did this, it’s one of my favorite movies
Was obsessed with this one as a kid. I'd pretend I was a character in the story in my backyard in the trees with my little toy shotgun.
Will always be a special one
I named my tortoise Pepe hoping it would make him fast. It didn't work.
Me too. I loved treasure hunts and treasure map movies. This and the Goonies.
The Fury (1978), directed by Brian DePalma, Saturn 3 (1980), a bonkers Alien ripoff with Harvey Keitel, Tough Guys (1986), with his buddy Burt Lancaster, Diamonds (1999), with Dan Aykroyd, and lastly It Runs In The Family featuring son Michael, grandson, Kirk's ex.
is there a movie where Kirk and Michael is on the same movie??
Hope you guys like it!!
I love it, have seen it at least four times!!! Even bought copies of it!!!
Thank goodness this movie was a hit when it came out. Allowed Zemeckis to go ahead on 'Back to the Future' just a year later. Imagine this world without BTTF... great Scot!!
edit: @7:34 good god, I have this playing on the background while making dinner. Gave me a heart attack!! 😂
Back to the Future, one of the best films ever made.
Just like the success of Porky's allowed A Christmas Story to be made.
@@clevelandcbi wow, that's cool
@@stsolomon618 Took a tour of the house in Cleveland. Always knew it was downtown Cleveland shown in the opening credits but didn't know so much was filmed there. Learned a ton of cool things. The 2 that stood out was that the director refused to do a Porkys sequel unless they let him make A Christmas Story. He'd been trying for several years. Also, due to unusual Temps, all the snow was fake.
@@clevelandcbi one of my favorite Christmas movies.
Black Rain. Under rated early Michael Douglas.
Both Princess Bride and Dirty Dancing are both still up!! 😁I had to do a double take for a moment because I swore that I had just watched them not too long ago. Definitely check out the sequel, Jewel of the Nile eventually!
This film is always going to be a timeless classic. I hope you two react to its sequel, "Jewel Of The Nile" as well!
