- In this video I go over the process of installing head studs and fuel injectors in my 1984/89/93 Crew Cab. I am going ahead and putting studs in with the hope that it will keep me from blowing the head gasket with the new extra fuel. The truck is currently tuned with max settings on the VE pump and the stock H1c turbo with a 12cm wastegated housing installed. I hope you enjoy getting to see me do some wrenching and musing about performance related things.
Thanks for Watching!
Ah makes me long for the days! I absolutely hate working on trucks now... Back on my first truck ( 1967) I actually could climb into the engine compartment and sit on the inner wheel well while working on the head of my engine.. :)
My brother had a Nash Rambler that he said he could get in the engine compartment and close the hood.
@@somebodyelse6673 Gotta watch somebody don't drive off while you're in there.
@@somebodyelse6673 Hell.. If I lost 120 pounds and did not mind a few cracked vertebrae I could do that now! :)
... and momma always marveled at how dirty you could get just by looking under a hood.
I like that adjustable handle tap wrench 👍
I loved mine more when it would still ratchet. That feature was nice but I broke the ratchet part and ended up welding it together to still use it. I got it from Harbor Freight
I knew someone besides me would be lustily eyeing that tool. At least I'd hoped so!
Me too glad, you asked
When I worked for HFT I examined those pretty thoroughly and my conclusion was they're among the best-made stuff you can find there. Strangely filed in or next to plumbing supplies, though.
You cracked me up@10:15 with the red text.
Nice Williams Super Ratchet! We’ve bought many of them used from Caterpillar factories up here near Peoria, IL. But usually 3/8 and 1/2 regular length handle. The long handles are hard to find! And the matching torque wrench to boot! And your making me miss my first gen!
I have Many Williams tools. No one else around here does so it helps to keep mine identified. lol
I sure did want to hear that girl sing with her new jewelry. I guess I'll have to wait for the next video. Glad to see someone taught you the correct way to install/remove studs by double nutting them. Not with vicegrips. Looks good Brian.
Take Care and Stay Safe.

Steve will be at your shop next week. I am looking forward to the video.
Can't wait!
@@bcbloc02 I really wanted to go with him but can’t leave 3 dogs for that long 🙁
Great video 👍 Brian Thanks for reminding everyone about the copper washer magnet a bit of grease will help against gravity ☺️
You bet!
You should show the old injector nozzles on your pressure test machine to see the difference in spray pattern.
Excellent video it's nice to see you working on your own projects
More to come!
@@bcbloc02 that is wonderful to hear that 👍
Looking forward to the comparison and what you think you gained. Thanks for sharing
Always something new .. my kind of video
Thanks
Glad you dodged that chicken because it was sure eyeing you. Years ago the old 237 gold dogs were blowing head gaskets. The ace wrench man would cross the mountain and re-torque the heads. Took one bold out at a time, oil it and re-torque it. No more blown gaskets. The same operation worked on my diesel Wabbit. Years ago. Hope all is good and Thanks for shaving. I used to let it all grow all winter and hack it off in the summer. Happy Kentucky Summer, by the way and GBWYou!
I did the same thing with my VW, but I also purchased a new torque wrench. All day process. Warm to op temp, crack 'em loose an 8th, re-torque (one at a time), let cool to ambient temps, do it all over again. Did 4 or 5 cycles. That head gasket held for 8 years. Couldn't get a week out of the previous 3.
@@infoanorexic I had the 'How To Keep Your VW Rabbit Alive' Idiot book by John Muir Publishers and it was TOP NOTCH but a Haynes manual said to pull the NEW head bolts to maybe 85 and then something like a quarter or three quarters of a turn (it's been YEARS). My block was stone cold and when you have no new bolts you use what you have. Seems like the total was 115 or so and I probably did 125. Before you could see bubbles between the head and block. Not a single one after. But I pulled each bolt out and oiled it, just to be sure. GBWYou!
@@lewiemcneely9143 Some used the re-usable bolts, the later ones used the "stretch" bolts, which were a different size. Mine are the re-usable. I also had more than one book, if I recall correctly one of them left that little bit of trivia out ... I hope they caught the error and updated later publishing's.
I say "are" because I still have that engine, though the rest of the car either lives elsewhere or went to the shredder. By the time the last head gasket failed, the interior was moldy tatters. It leaked like a seive, no heat (cheapest blower motor I could find at the time was over $300). Shift linkage was shot. I'd say that it had led it's last greyhound.
@@infoanorexic We drove that one for several years after I got it from a lifetime friend. They were something else. We had 2 diesels and a couple of gas jobs. Liked them all!
very good video brian..thanks for your time
Very cool Brian, sure is a lot easier to access than my Navistar 7.3 Diesel in my F350. I need to replace my injectors. The engine is a little sluggish compared to what is should be.
Thanks for sharing.
What a great way for me to end a long day,,,nothing like wishing my ole D-250 had a 12v,,, Darn it,,,we are getting hammered here 😵 uses too like hail when we did paint & body,,,
You could always swap one in. I did mine in a week. :-)
👍👍right on man...I've gotta do the same thing on my '97.... With various mods to pump, injectors, and s300 ..I'm on borrowed time I'm afraid..I've got the studs still in the box.... should b doing it tonight , but...I've just been taking it easy...tune the pump down with afc live to 40-45 pounds...short bursts... 😆
Hello from Maine . I bought and use the harbor freight one because I acquired one from Germany and thought I would save it for the most important jobs . They are handy for hand tapping in the lathe with a center spot on the end . I like the double adjustable bar handles . The Germany one is obviously way more professional looking and using lol China , Germany ?
Another Job well done Brian and Baily!
Good to see Baily and the murder chickens out and about.
Nice job Brian.
Looking fine Brian.
Hmm, I am running 5x14s, 160hp p7100 and an S300 turbo in my second gen 12 valve. You are making me wonder if I am on borrowed time with just factory head bolts. Can't wait to see this progress! The internet says you need 4.10s to tow heavy, lol, your proving them wrong.
How much boost you running? VE's run all their fuel down low so they make a lot of torque and cylinder pressure compared to their hp. Its the cylinder pressure that kills the gaskets more than anything and if you don't pull heavy trailers you would not see near the pressure as me because you will be able to accelerate away from the load instead of bearing it all.
@@bcbloc02 35psi I believe on the "stock" wastegate setup. Pulling my 10k 5th wheel once in a while, usually 5-6k hauling boats, scrap and small machine tools, 3.73 gear though. I'm easy on it when pulling a trailer as I don't want to spit my 47RH all over the pavement.
I have a few sets of head studs and was just wondering if i should put them in without removing the head the other day .
Brian the inspector pup said you went to 150lbs torque on 1 2 & 3 5 torque bolts. I am only guessing at that last measurement. But one thing is for sure it is much better than it was. Will be interesting to see what these values are before torquing when warm.
I sat next to a Cummings engineer on a plane once. He said the 5.9 liter was the best engine Cummings ever made for a truck. He said they were practically indestructible.
except for the killer dowel pin that walks out and goes between the cam gears, yes
@@Rx7man well technically the conversation was on the 24 vale 5.9
@@dmadere1 in which case the VP44 is it's Achilles heel.. or the 53 block that cracks often
@@Rx7man all I know is mine is pushing 400,000 and still truckin
@@dmadere1 I just have mostly first gens and a P pump 2nd gen.. I've got 4 trucks and the average mileage on them is about 300K.

if we keep using it, eventually everything on the planet will be covered with a thin silvery haze of never-seize . . . that stuff gets *everywhere*
There's a video on RUclips of a Mustang with one of those Cummings Motors..
Steve, That adjustable slip handle tap wrench is available from Harbor Freight. Top quality, made in Taiwan. I have 2 and love them.
I loved mine more when it would still ratchet. That feature was nice but I broke the ratchet part and ended up welding it together to still use it.
Hey Brian
In the videos you said it has a blown head gasket, yet you didn't remove/replace it. What am I not understanding?
Thanks for sharing.
I never said it had a blown gasket. I said I was putting studs in so it hopefully WON"T blow a gasket. You may have heard me talk about the truck I robbed the studs from which does have a blown gasket.
@@bcbloc02 Thanks for correcting me. Thought it was strange, so had to ask.
Ahhh, more torque wrench click therapy!
2,187th!🐕🦺🛻👍
Every diesel engine should come with head studs. Manufacturers like bolts because it is faster to assemble with robots
Hiya Brian
Recently i ventured out from spark plugs to compression ignition in the form of a 1980 OM617 turbo diesel without any of the egr or craziness newer diesels got. I am wondering what you would recommend to turn up the whick up to about 150-160hp. I would like to do it properly.
I think Mercedes had the pump on them custom built. There is virtually no excess capacity available to turn the fuel up with. When I did mine to 150rwhp I bought a different bigger injection pump from Finland.
@@bcbloc02 i see. I guess i am going to keep it stock. She only has 173k on it but runs really well. I recently got a 1980 300SD. I am in love with it now.
@@Engineerd3d I always wanted one of those early SD's but could only find decent w123's here. The 300SD must not have been as popular or just people here didn't have that much coin to buy them. lol
@@bcbloc02 the SD is a s-class car, it was over 35k in 1980, makes it about 100k today's money. The w123 was very cheap in comparison and you could get all the features of the s-class for the w123. One thing i have to say is I love the ride and starting to love the mill. Maybe it's time for you to get one now? Swap a 12v cummings?
Not my favorite job. But a hell of a lot better than a head gasket. At least that's a two wheel drive, and I bet you are a fair bit taller than I.
That is why I put the studs in now so hopefully I won't have to do it later.
@@bcbloc02 Yes sir... I've studded all of mine... after I lost my first gasket. No issues since.
I've got a 4x4. It's been the cause of many sore ribs for sure. A set of cinder blocks helps if you are at home. Tool boxes while elsewhere.
That's what they make ranchhand bumpers for...a nice platform to stand on while working on the motor. 😁
I've been thinking about trying to make a set of studs from H-13, maybe pre hard ?
I don't know what strength they would be at prehard but I suspect a little low.
How’s that Audi coming along ??
Still waiting on parts. :-(
Is the H1C gonna hold up?
It takes it fine but it is a long way from cleaning up the fuel.
😴 WAKE UP! 😳 🙂

Hope you enjoy
ARP assembly lube with a Deer logo 😂🤣😂🤣
I swear it is the exact same stuff it’s moly grease and you can put it side by side with the arp line and can tell no difference. It looks the same and feels the same and as far as I can tell works the same.
@@bcbloc02 I suspect you’re correct on that. Same stuff except the price. Hilarious the way you presented it. Had to roll back the video to confirm what I thought I saw. 😳🤔😂
