This was a really fun watch! Just seeing all the enthusiasm for this band between the three of you made me want to explore ML further despite the lengthy discography.

Awesome that you finally put this out! I only started collecting their discography a few years ago so I have a lot of catching up to do. Although marks passing was way too soon he at least got to see the recognition his music deserved in the later years. Thanks guys!

It was a fun stream. I was getting tired so I didn’t finish it live. But these band retrospectives are cool. More should be done.

Atlantis Rising was originally going to be another Mark Shelton solo project, called "The Shark Project", which is why is sounds a bit different and weird. Unlike with The Circus Maximus, when the label suggested it be released as Manilla Road, Mark liked the idea as it felt like Manilla Road. The subsequent albums go back to a bit more of the old MN vibe, but still kept some of that awesome weirdness from Atlantis Rising

We're working on some ideas. We're trying to mix things up a little so it's not just 'Band of the Week' but there will definitely be more band deep-dives to come!

You didn't speak about David Mustain offer to unite bands. Dave , Mark ,David Elefson and Randy Fox ( second drummer ) . It's on time of "Deluge " .

Thanks guys, this was fun and informative. I picked up a bunch of records in a Shadow Kingdom sale years ago. I listened to Invasion and then Out of the Abyss and was totally confused. 😃 I'm going to dive back in now.

    Great discussion!
The riff of 'Dreams of Eschaton' is off the track 'Angel of Death' from the Angel Witch debut. Manilla Road were really influenced by that debut. I think it was a tribute.
I like the HHR issue of Crystal Logic, which is great and also has the track "Flaming Metal Systems" which is not on the first pressings.
P.S. Aaron comments against Thin Lizzy and Rush: Not Good! xD. There was definitely something in your drink that made you say things that are not supposed to be said hehehe;-)

Ah, thanks for answering the Angel Witch question! While I love that s/t AW album sometimes the songs run together in my head so I couldn't suss out which track sounded like DoE.

Good that finaly this video is made and nice its done this way. I keep looking, its a long but interesting video. I am not a big fan but i respect the band a lot. I was lucky to be able to buy in the 90s the original versions on vinyl from some of there 80s albums. Bought them because the cover art. Take careeee

Killer episode. Third time watching probably. I don't really get Alans critisism of The Deluge. I think the album is perfectly paced. In fact I love the collage feel of that album, it's almost Abbey Road like in a manical way. On the other hand. CL, OtG, Deluge and Mystification are magical and it's impossible for me to pick a favorite. Today it's The Deluge, tomorrow probably Crystal Logic.

    Assorted thoughts...
Angel of Death by Angel Witch is the song MR borrows the licks from-, but yes, Crystal Logic is a great album otherwise. 1. Mystification, 2. Mark of the Beast, 3. Open the Gates 4. The Deluge 5. Voyager/Crystal Logic/Gates of Fire are my top 5 MR favorites. And yeah, Alan is correct---prog rock got me into metal and I relish the spacious and magickal composition from MotB.
Randy Thrasher Fox really enriched Open the Gates---Behold the master of the flam! And I saw an amazing set Manilla Road did in Germany in 2009 at Headbnagers Open Air with Cory on drums...it was 2 1/2 hours...Cage of Mirrors....Divine Victim...Road of Kings...so much gold.
Circus Maximus has No Sign from Above, their lone successful foray into funk, and the soaring and plaintive ballads, She's Fading and Don't Touch, which seems like some fantastical alternative Journey. And yeah Thin Lizzy rules. Thunder & Lightning is a good one to convert an unconvinced metalhead...

I own two Manilla Road albums and I’m kinda familiar with one of them. I don’t know how to digest 17 more albums. It’s intimidating.

Use this stream as your guide. For the older era, check out Mystification. For the post reunion, give Atlantis Rising a spin. So many great albums to choose from.

Video idea: Is X album really front-loaded or do you have listener fatigue? (Try to start with B-side).

Man, I almost loved every second of this... except for Aaron’s brazen comments. But that is a war for another day. Awesome. Near Perfect show for a near perfect band. Beers raised. Give Aaron a glass of water, I guess.

Seriously. Thin Lizzy is a band I wish I loved. Who knows, maybe one day I’ll be a fanatic. I do think they are alright. I think there are a few great bands that we personally don’t click with. Ken doesn’t like Black Sabbath. I’m still trying to wrap my head around that one. (No disrespect Ken! I’m still a fan of you and your channel!)

As a 'Lizzy fan that caught me off guard too... but then again I'm not keen on 'Mystification' and most folks love that MR album, so who am I to judge? :)

    • @scottwilcox2440

I am a diehard Rush fan but have to agree with Aaron's take on Thin Lizzy. I always feel like I should like them but when I listen to an album I am underwhelmed. To me they are one of those bands where the greatest hits is quite enough.

    • @letstalkmetal

@@scottwilcox2440 That's cool, that's exactly how I am with RUSH :) I think we all have those bands where we just like certain songs but usually don't want to sit through an entire album.

  • @recordmass6298

My ranking of the classic 4: 1)The Deluge, 2)Mystification, 3)Open the Gates, 4)Crystal Logic (last because I think his vocals are mixed poorly and excessively exagerated on parts, brings the album down for me because of that. On the other 3 that doesn`t happen, he's got his vocal style and it fits appropiately)

  • @aleksandarfrick2656
