It is THE Speedmaster... that one that spawned the entire Speedmaster race. Many people only know the "moon" flavour and ignore the history of this masterpiece... and call themselves: "collectors". I proudly own the latest version, cal 9906, blue dial.
We need more video reviews from you RJ, I do enjoy them! The blue 57 is a very beautiful thing, but somehow the built for purpose of the Moonwatch does it for me. Also for a smaller wrist I find it more wearable in the 3861, and that's why I have one, the 57s are a bit "long". There is also the price...
Seagull 1963 is a column wheel chrono and it’s $300, so is the Longines Big Eye for around $3000. Tissot also does one and so does Hamilton, both for about $2000.
Bought the 57 with the green dial. My second Speedmaster (50th anniversary limited edition). Love this watch and it has become my go to daily over my Omega diver 300 chronograph and my Zenith Chronomaster Sport. My only complaint is the crown is small and tight against the case, making winding with my large fingers a challenge at times, as a result I don’t get 60 hours of power reserve because I don’t wind it all the way as the combination of the small crown and fear of overwinding. Not an issue when I wear and wind daily, but that’s my only negative criticism. It’s very comfortable, subtle and classic.
This would be where I’d look for an option other than a Moonwatch Pro for sure. I love the sandwich dial in particular. I can live with the date window, as a whole this dial layout is interesting to me. The dimensions are far superior to the previous generation, the height of which rules me out. I’d have liked to see this even a touch smaller in diameter. The movement is stunning, it’s a different look from what a lot of people expect, but gorgeous. The price, that’s a lot of watch for the money, but it’s still a lot of money…. Not sure I could swing it over a pro.
This watch is so beautiful. It probably gonna be my first omega watch. I love the burgundy red dial but I saw the green dial with sunburst effect. I’m torn. I haven’t seen or tried any at the boutique yet. My brain n my wallet kinda say go for the professional in sapphire but my heart goes for 57 in Burgundy red. 🥰 I guess I really have to go and try at the boutique soon.
@@Sexiestmanalive01 I highly doubt this is related to the war in Ukraine, as most watch companies do not manufacture or source parts from Ukraine or Russia. They increase the prices to adjust inflation and increasing costs for materials and/or sourced parts.

@@GradoLabsFans I have seen it last week, there will be only 12 watches of each version. It wasn’t communicated to us as a set, just separetely available watches.
Tried this on at an AD alongside the latest moonwatch and must say the 57 blew the moonwatch away in terms of presence and feel on the wrist. Appreciate that's an entirely subjective position, but the draw was immediate. When I put the moonwatch on it just felt "lesser" - and I came in specifically for the moonwatch! Didn't even know ow there was a new 57 at that point (this was in the spring) All that said, the price is a tough pill to swallow, especially lacking the lineage the moonwatch claims. Will the 57 retain its value in the same way? So far I've purchased neither as I continue to debate.
Resale value only matters if you’re planning to sell it. I have never lost on any Speedmaster, but it’s fair to say I kept mine always for a longer period. Buy what you like best, it seems to be that would be the ‘57. Enjoy it and don’t worry about selling.
@@Mega-zi7ys Ok, do as you please ;-) I think it’s more fun when you’re not too concerned with resale value. Otherwise everyone ends up with the same watches…
Great review - balanced, expert, understated and reasoned. How's it going in the modern media landscape?! We can only hope the approach catches on! But the watch? A sleeper hit I think. A cool, classy choice; for me, in the black. But the market will have to get accustomed to two things - the broad arrow and the manual wind. I've a Pro and a Seamaster Trilogy, so I like both, but they're still a hard sell to the mass market. I think the price is high, but is it fair, relatively? The quality of the watch is in no doubt, but the market got addicted to cheap Speedies and even now, is the '57 worth 30%/£2k more than the Pro? Up against most mid-market competition (Rolex, Panerai, IWC), it seems great value, but the main competitor is probably Breitling and their Navi B01 is £1k less...
Yup ppl want a cheap speedmaster. But so long as Omega sticks to it's guns and gradually raise prices ..over time the "older" generation who "insists" on old pricing for speedmasters will slowly be overtaken by newer generation speedmaster enthusiasts and the new "norm" for speedmaster pricing shall have firmly taken hold. It's hard to change the ways of the older generation...they get set in their ways very stubbornly.... 0.25 cents hotdogs, usd 10k Toyotas... anything else above that is "ridiculously" expensive...😁 It takes time, so long as Omega holds on..the tide will slowly turn.
As much as I like the new dial options for Omega 57. There is at least two negative things for me that will prevent this model or in general speedmaster models to be in my collection or on my wrist. First one is the fact that there is no rotor. If the space is a concern then micro rotor is a way to go. The fact that you always have to think about manually winding that watch even if you using it 24/7. Second thing is that pen*s at 12:00 will never let me buy this watch, or the speedmaster in general. Of course this is heritage and the history and everything that comes along with it but as much as I respect all of that I cannot see this watch being on my wrist and me always noticing that. The positive thing I like the dial and the moment finishing.
Legibility of the bezel is zero. Not that the watch would ever be used for its intended purpose. But at this price point for the model of a third-tier brand, I expect someone to take a look before mass production is started. But we don't know anything different from Omega lately. You can use the razor-sharp edges of the other Speedy to finely cut garlic (or your fingers).
That's why Omega changed its bezel in the 1960s to the black bezel. Omega started using this bezel (again) as it represents those first steel bezels. Nobody uses them anyway ;-). As for the sharpness on the lugs, it's something we don't feel on this Speedmaster '57 (but also not on the new Pro models, and we have several here). The only properly sharp Speedmaster we've come across was the Tokyo 2020 edition.
@@FratelloMagazine I'm very sad about that. In the promo pictures this "flaw" didn't look as severe. I was 99 percent sure then, this will be my next watch. In the end, seeing it - or not seeint it :-D - in the metal, I had to waive.

Nice looking watch, but Omegas prices are getting way out of hand. Legibility is also non-existent in most light. At over 8k forget it. Much better watches out there for half the cost.

Right on. I personally think that a bicompax chronograph goes perfectly well with a date window at 6; i feel like as if that area isn't "empty".
