I’ve owned some very nice and too expensive watches in my life…but as I grew older and older, not only did my taste in watches change, but my love for Seiko’s grew and grew. My favorite is the 55th Anniversary Willard. It really is amazing. And it gets a ton of wrist time. The previous Longines diver with the aluminum bezel is second on my most warn list. The JDM dark grey dial Alpinist is my everyday Explorer. The Rolex and the Omegas get worn too…but not often. I don’t sell watches. Too many kids and grandkids. I gift them. Love the videos…always a pleasure to watch them.
@@Hard_7_Iron It's weird. I haven't been in this hobby for long. Rolex Sub - Oris Aquis Black. I know it's an integrated bracelet but it has a very similar vibe for lot less money. Love the videos Mike. Thanks for making them
A super nice looking square watch: Hamilton Boulton. I wear a ladies size quartz with white dial and blued hands and it's the classic thing in the classic size. Love it! The men's sizes are quite large IMO for the style and the mechanical version has the H-50 which is a bit of a questionable movement. Quartz is a 15 jewel ETA unit.

Well done and thought provoking. I know you said you didn’t want to include homage models, but at the end of the day, one can’t help notice how similar designs are across the industry. The use of color, complications, price, and the amount of hand craftsmanship seem to differentiate models today. In essence, the old axiom “what is new is old” reverberates in today’s watch industry.

I enjoy your videos. Very relaxing and I always learn something even if I disagree with a lot of your views. But that's okay. It shows that I am clear about what I like and don't like in watch and that I can find it alternatives too.
For the AP Royal Oak segment, I was surprised you didn't mention the Maurice Lacroix Aikon, Mike. The archetype "90% of the watch for 10% of the price" proposition and a whole bunch of iterations to choose from (because of its success), including a fully ceramic.
Another great video. Check out Muhle Glashutte Terrasport II for a nice Pilot style watch. Modified Selita movement with Woodpecker Regulator. Also check out Union Glashutte Noramis Date Sport. Applied markers, 12.9 mm thick, 200 meter water resistance, 60 hours PR, ETA movement, sapphire crystal, 316 stainless; gorgeous colors a very handsome watch. pickle all is all the rage for certain generations of folk in the US. Court size is half a tennis court. Lots of injuries resulting from middle aged/older/elderly suddenly running around like a chicken without a head. The healthcare industry has gotten a boost in injuries.
Heard a stand up comedian describe it with "Do you like Tennis but don't have the stamina, strength or hand-eye coordination? Then Pickleball may be for you" 😂😂😂
Nice video as always. Alternatives: for the Cartier Tank or even more Reverso, I'd recommend to look for a Eterna Les Historiques. And for the Speedmaster a Sinn 103St might be a good substitude. Also plexi, better WR rating, and it has even been in Space with a german Astronaut.
Thought-provoking selection! On the dive-watch front, which I've ignored since the 1990s, I found a ridiculously inexpensive choice that's built on a true icon: Seiko's Mini Turtle (SBDY085): it takes all the serious diving-crew of the full-size Turtle (including ISO certification), and tames the size down noticeably (a tad over 42mm diameter, a bit under 13mm thickness, and an almost-hard-to-believe 43mm lug-to-lug), and offers its own unique take on dial design. It's also seriously comfortable on-wrist. Price is seriously nice as well: it's a JDM watch, so you might have to search a bit, but brand-new it can be had in the mid-to-high US$300 range.
Alternative chrono is the MIDO MULTIFORT BICOMPAX with date using a monied Valjoux 7750 to achieve a 60hr power reserve. No exotic/luxury materials but well designed with great attention to detail, a step up from Tissot. Seems many of the big companies like Satchel, Richemont, Seiko have designs from the top to bottom in their brands to cover all price points with similar design attributes to cover most budgets. Want a Willard but don’t want to spend even that much get a Turtle the SRP777 comes to mind and was given a standing ovation when released for $500.😎🤷♂️ Enjoy your content, the fact you don’t dictate what people should and shouldn’t like is refreshing.
Interesting video. These are all logical alternatives but the emotional side will be different to each individual. I've struggled to go for a CW or similar because at some level I know it would be a logical decision, but not satiate my desire for the original target at 3x the price. The power of branding right there...
Sometimes the original Bulova Lunar Pilot (big size)can be found for such low prices it is hard to pass. I paid less than half price for mine. I only wear it occasionally, but hard to beat for the price of some Ali watches nowadays.
I concur with your assessments and recommendations. I enjoy my ceramic Sub Date. A Omega Speedmaster and Sinn EZM 13.1 are on my list for my next watch. cvo
Top stuff as usual. A couple of sub-$1k ideas from me: The Glycine Airman is a great GMT alternative. Completely original design and it beat the Rolex GMT Master to market by a year as the first multiple timezone watch. Plus it went to space on multiple NASA Gemini missions. For a dressy steel watch, the Zodiac Olympos has a unique asymmetrical "manta ray" shaped case and a crosshair dial which varies beautifully with the light from different angles. For those partial to colourful 70s retro divers (not your cup of tea, I know), the Bulova Oceanographer "Devil Diver" is a unique, eye-catching cushion-cased option. Comfy, excellent build quality and very inexpensive at under $500. I also like all three because they're not hyped to death by the online watch herd.
I am glad you mention the Hanart 417 ES, especially the Flyback, as an alternative to the Speedmaster. I own both, and while the Speedmaster clearly feels more premium, they are much closer than the price difference would suggest. At 2,500 USD, the Hanhart is a lot of watch for the money, and the one I would recommend every time in the sub 3,000 USD bracket.
Icon: Casio F-91W Alternative: Timex T-80, Casio A-1000, Lidl digital watch (case made of actual metal!) Yes, I said it. When you can't go cheaper, you can go better!
Mike, Very much enjoyed your review of alternative watches. Would love to see a video reviewing the Omega 300m Diver in its various iterations and generations. One of these is on my short list, but there are so many color combinations to select from. I am partial to blue colors but don’t want something that looks like a swatch. Happy Holidays
Nomos Club Sport, a really nice watch. Thanks to you I'll keep coming back to Nomos. And you pointed towards Stowa, now I it is even harde to decide, but even more fun to look at both ;-)
I purchased a Bulova lunar pilot (blue/silver) from Bulova at a great discount about a year ago and I just never wear it. I wasn’t prepared for how big and chunky it is on wrist. The raised box crystal isn’t to my liking. It does keep time well in my watch case though 😊. How’d the bread turn out?
Jeez Mike, you could have sent a memo out re the dress code, I felt quite under dressed watching this vid with you in your sports jacket!🤣 I think a good alternative to the IWC would be the Oris Big Crown Propilot timer GMT (that was a mouth full!) I also think the Mido Ocean Star 600 is a great alternative to the Omega 300M. The Nivada Depthmaster is a good alternative to the Panerai if you can get past the qwerty indices! Anyway, another great vid, one of the best watch content creators Mike, wishing you and yours a Merry Xmas!
My choices would be: 1 Speedmaster: Dont know any other really, just pick a nice Chronograph. 2 Royal Oak: Tissot PRX/ Nivada F77 3 IWC Pilot: Laco/Stowa, Archimede, Davosa, etc. Not much different, I admit. 4 Radiomir: Alpina Startimer Pilot Heritage Manufacture, not really cheap, but cheaper and one of the few cushion cases I remember out of my head. 5 Carrera: Seiko Speedtimer with the quartz movement 6 Seemaster: Certina DS Action Diver 43mm Powermatic 80 Titanium 7 Tank: Frederique Constant Carrée Automatic 8 Polaris: Maurice Lacroix Pontos S Diver 9 Applewatch: G-Shock, all the way 10Just any watch that looks tha part. You can totally substitude a more affordable watch, in place of a luxury one. Those that argue against it usually seem to be slaves to those luxury names. BTW, nice jacket and what model is that on the backround?
I definitely agree on this "You can totally substitude a more affordable watch, in place of a luxury one. Those that argue against it usually seem to be slaves to those luxury names." What I would like to add though is, it definitely makes sense for models you aren't going to wear much anyway. But are more of an addition to "complete" your collection. Personally, I don't really see myself wearing a Cartier Tank, I respect the tank but it just isn't my cup of tea. However, I could see myself adding something like the Echo Neutro Rivanera to my collection.
Nice 👌 Laureato was missing as a high end alternative to the majestic tree Glad you mentioned Alpina. Don’t know much about them. Please do a RSA collab with ID guy That would be awesome
My 2 cents for a beautiful Chronograph and Diver watch that takes beauty and affordability into one. I would go for a Dan Henry Racing Chronograph. Meca-Seiko Quarts movement, with beautiful craftsmanship. With a genuine leather strap, under $500-usd. Take a look at the Dan Henry collection in general, and you'll find something that'll grip you. My Diver recommendation is the Héron Marinor. Beautiful dive watches with an Automatic Miyota 9039 movement, and dome sapphire glass. Under a $1000. Heron is a mighty-micro brand from Canada. And pound for pound has some of the most beautiful dive watches on the market. Just my opinion. Have a great day!
In the area of rectangular watches, I think the Oris Rectangular it’s a great option in terms of proportions and the movement. I think the only downside are the straps, but that it’s a easy fix.
Loved. I hope the Apple gods do not smite you. Great segment. Will take ti,e to review alternatives you mentioned. They went fast (to me) in the video. Of course I am stoned and thinking of the bread you made. 🙄
My spouse purchased an Apple watch for me back in August 2022...it is not my most worn watch.....nor #2, nor #3.......somewhere like 9 or 10 (maybe). Completely agree with your sentiments on it.
You did a wonderful job in this video!! Great alternatives and maybe a few should haves instead of iconic offerings as well! The Tissot is a winner in my book! I have the Alpina XL and it is a splendid watch with a unique look. The option for the Tag Carrera is... the Tag Monaco. JK ! The Baume Mercier is a great choice! I'll go off track here and say the Rolex Submariner is soooo uninteresting to me. I have a Titanium JeanRichard 1000' dive watch with a vanilla scented rubber strap. That is interesting!!
Mike, love your pov! Not seeing the similarity, however, with the 300M and suggested Seikos? The Seikos seem to be a completely different case shape and form factor?
Shhh.. don't tell 'em about the SLA Uemuras! Kidding, such great watches! I'll check out that Alpina now. Love the suggestions, esp. the cushion cases, which I've been enjoying lately. I'd also suggest the Farer cushion case (popular enough that they now offer 8 different models but the classic Stanhope and green Mansfield are my favorites), the Duckworth Prestex Verimatic, and Fears Brunswick as some cool English takes on the cushion case (more svelte than the Italian, in a reversal of Italians vs. English dress shoes).
I got the PR516 for the exact reason. It's a manual wound no date tricomplex chronograph that is sized well...just like the moonwatch. I changed to a nato strap on day one and never looked back. It's now set up as a lightweight tool watch that happens to be a chronograph for those occasional use cases.
Your digital alarm going off while speaking about chronographs is poetic justice. That’s why I don’t use my Chrono to time things they need to make them with alarms!!
It's always a pleasure to watch your videos on a Saturday. I remember being fascinated by the historiques american 1921, and then seeing a longines with the same dial design. However, it did not capture me as the 1921 did. Currently, I'm fascinated by F.P. Journe waches, in your opinion Mike what are some alternatives for F.P. Journe?
Very entertaining once again. But the one (or two) I miss being mentioned when it comes to divers, is the Breitling Superocean (Heritage). To me it beats the Tudor, the Submariner and all others. Available in all sizes, colours, with nato strap, mesh or rubber and the option for vintage (the Heritage model) or simply modern (the Superocean).
Hi Mike. A pleasure as always to watch your "understated" (or just maybe not overhyped) intelligent, well thought out clips. I love the TH Monaco (how can you not? (IMO of course)) but it will never be in my budget. I'd love to hear your thoughts on alternatives. I tried a Straton Sportiva but it arrived defective and was a very disappointing experience sorting it out. Any other thoughts? Kind regards
For Panerai an iconic alternative could be the Nivada Grenchen Depthmaster which has a great history or Anomino's Nautilo series (of which Anomino was born out of Panerais exit from Italy). For the Tag Heur alternative l would consider the Vulcain 1970's Chronograph series especially their Panda or Excelsior Park's EP95 Chrono or Bi-Compax. For the Seammaster alternative very tough - I lean towards the Echo/Neutra - Cristallo Professional Diver or Horage - Supersede Date. For Cartier Tank - there is the Alpina Carree Automatic. For JLC Polaris either the Aquastar Model 60 Reissue which is an iconic Skin Diver in its own right or the Benrus Ultra Deep another influential dive watch. For the Rolex Sub/TUdor Black Bay alternative I would thow out there for something different the Laventure - Sours Marine 2 or the Tuseno Shellback V2.

Seems many of the big companies like Satchel, Richemont, Seiko have designs from the top to bottom in their brands to cover all price points with similar design attributes to cover most budgets. Want a Willard but don’t want to spend even that much get a Turtle the SRP777 comes to mind and was given a standing ovation when released for $500.😎🤷♂️
Enjoy your content, the fact you don’t dictate what people should and shouldn’t like is refreshing.
Lot's of Mido mentions - for good reason 😀😀😀
Interesting video. These are all logical alternatives but the emotional side will be different to each individual. I've struggled to go for a CW or similar because at some level I know it would be a logical decision, but not satiate my desire for the original target at 3x the price. The power of branding right there...
As always, a treat to watch.
thanks 😀😀
Sometimes the original Bulova Lunar Pilot (big size)can be found for such low prices it is hard to pass. I paid less than half price for mine. I only wear it occasionally, but hard to beat for the price of some Ali watches nowadays.
I concur with your assessments and recommendations. I enjoy my ceramic Sub Date. A Omega Speedmaster and Sinn EZM 13.1 are on my list for my next watch. cvo
Thanks for mentioning the ML Aikon!
I like it - simple as 😀😀
I was not aware of that Tissot chronograph, now I want it!
I love these!
I build my own homage watches, but slightly different, as I don't want a direct copy, just an inspiration.
Top stuff as usual.
A couple of sub-$1k ideas from me:
The Glycine Airman is a great GMT alternative.
Oh yes. I agree 100% about Bulova Oceanographer but I think the beige Oceanographer GMT is even better looking one.
Icon: Casio F-91W
Alternative: Timex T-80, Casio A-1000, Lidl digital watch (case made of actual metal!)
Yes, I said it. When you can't go cheaper, you can go better!
Absolutely LOVE your channel my man...thank you for doing what you do🙏⌚️✌️
Thanks for watching to you 😀😀😀❤️
Great picks, Mike
Mike,
Very much enjoyed your review of alternative watches.
And you pointed towards Stowa, now I it is even harde to decide, but even more fun to look at both ;-)
Love your videos and I wish you had covered universal geneve polerouter alternative
It's a big watch. Not refined in the way an omega is
Jeez Mike, you could have sent a memo out re the dress code, I felt quite under dressed watching this vid with you in your sports jacket!🤣 I think a good alternative to the IWC would be the Oris Big Crown Propilot timer GMT (that was a mouth full!) I also think the Mido Ocean Star 600 is a great alternative to the Omega 300M. The Nivada Depthmaster is a good alternative to the Panerai if you can get past the qwerty indices! Anyway, another great vid, one of the best watch content creators Mike, wishing you and yours a Merry Xmas!
Apologies. I'll send out dress code rules prior next time 😂
@@Mike.thiswatchthatwatch 🤣🤣
First for Mike's Saturday words. Love it!
Homage watches just a reminder of what could have been. IMO Have to say that Zenith wouldn't be a compromise
Boom!
My choices would be:
1 Speedmaster: Dont know any other really, just pick a nice Chronograph.
2 Royal Oak: Tissot PRX/ Nivada F77
3 IWC Pilot: Laco/Stowa, Archimede, Davosa, etc. Not much different, I admit.
4 Radiomir: Alpina Startimer Pilot Heritage Manufacture, not really cheap, but cheaper and one of the few cushion cases I remember out of my head.
5 Carrera: Seiko Speedtimer with the quartz movement
6 Seemaster: Certina DS Action Diver 43mm Powermatic 80 Titanium
7 Tank: Frederique Constant Carrée Automatic
8 Polaris: Maurice Lacroix Pontos S Diver
9 Applewatch: G-Shock, all the way
10Just any watch that looks tha part.
Those that argue against it usually seem to be slaves to those luxury names."
What I would like to add though is, it definitely makes sense for models you aren't going to wear much anyway. But are more of an addition to "complete" your collection. Personally, I don't really see myself wearing a Cartier Tank, I respect the tank but it just isn't my cup of tea. However, I could see myself adding something like the Echo Neutro Rivanera to my collection.
Thank you, this is helpful.
So glad!
Nice 👌
Laureato was missing as a high end alternative to the majestic tree
Glad you mentioned Alpina. Don’t know much about them.
Please do a RSA collab with ID guy
That would be awesome
Nice AP :) Is that the new purchase?
Nope. Had it for quite a while 😀
I very much enjoyed the video, mainly as it provides me with more evidence that there are no alternatives when what you really desire is the icon.
Glad to hear that there are happy Alpina owners out there 😀😀
Great video as always! How about for an Omega Aqua Terra, the alternative - Jack Mason (new) Canton?
Mike, love your pov!
Not seeing the similarity, however, with the 300M and suggested Seikos? The Seikos seem to be a completely different case shape and form factor?
Is that a gaming chair in your editing room mike? 🤣 But seriously, I look forward to your videos every week. Thank you sir!
Secretlab - Yes 😀😀
love your videos .......
thanks
Shhh.. don't tell 'em about the SLA Uemuras!
Great video!
Thanks 😀😀
I got the PR516 for the exact reason. It's a manual wound no date tricomplex chronograph that is sized well...just like the moonwatch.
I changed to a nato strap on day one and never looked back. It's now set up as a lightweight tool watch that happens to be a chronograph for those occasional use cases.
Glad to hear there's a happy PR516 customer out there 😀😀
You guys, he bakes bread. I have a new found respect.
Depends on the bread quality.😂
@Mike.thiswatchthatwatch Sometimes it's about the effort 😂.
Your digital alarm going off while speaking about chronographs is poetic justice. That’s why I don’t use my Chrono to time things they need to make them with alarms!!
Seiko bellmatic?
Great and unique channel!
Thank you very much 😀😀
Kuoe Kyoto’s new Sombrero is a cool inexpensive alternative to the Polaris as well!
Journe?
Baume and Mercier Riviera Baumatic alternative to the AP Royal Oak?
Not a chance. Not this level.
I think the Oris rectangular is a good alternative to a Cartier tank. Maybe a bit more casual, but still can be dressed up
Very entertaining once again.
Hi Mike. A pleasure as always to watch your "understated"
(or just maybe not overhyped) intelligent, well thought out clips.
Great video mate 🫡
Thanks for watching ..😀😀
