Got it when it came out. Absolutely loved it. Didn't expect it, but enjoyed it for what it was. That was around the time that Fantasy was getting huge---Excalibur, Conan, etc, plus Dungeons and Dragons was hitting big. This was Kiss's soundtrack to a fantasy movie (that never materialized), and I was stoked that Kiss was jumping into the genre. I understand the backlash (then and now) but none of that mattered to me. I still enjoy giving it a spin.

I always liked Ace, but why does he always pretend to be from the streets? He was not from the streets, he had the most upper class up bringing of all the original members! Ace's father was an Electrical Engineer who worked for NASA and his mother drove around in a huge Cadillac with she drove Ace to his KISS audition in. Do you really think Ace's father would have his family living in the shittiest part of the Bronx New York, that Cadillac would be stripped and picked cleaned if Ace's story is true! Also, Ace was the only member to own a Marshal stack, which he brought to his KISS audition, not sure how he fitted in his mother's Cadillac though.

Anyway, it was 1986 when I suddenly thought of the record and wanted to go off to the used record shops to get another copy. I didn't realize it was out of print and that the only copy I could find before the CD reissue was a 75 dollar picture disc that skipped like a motherfucker.

I always wondered why Paul doesn`t like Unmasked. It`s a great pop rock album. It`s the album that made them huge in Europe. It was a great success in both Europe and Australia. Sales can`t judge the quality of an album, but European fans have always loved Unmasked and is often in Top 3 favorite albums by fans above 50. Which, to be honest, is the majority of KISS`s fan base.

If KISS had pushed the concept of the album was the story of the search for Eric as a new member of the band I think some fans would have loved that.
I feel Gene & Paul’s experiences at the time (the loss of Peter, Ace’s drugs/drinking and not showing up, etc) color their impression of the album.
As a fan from the time I loved the album.
The rock songs were fantastic and the storytelling of the overall record was kinda cool.
I definitely like the song layout as we now know it should have been but also see how starting a number of the more theatrical or opera like songs.

Ace and Peter did become a problem towards the end of the 70's because of drugs and alcohol but give them there dam due! Pete in those early albums has some really great songs. There’s no way Eric ever played Metallica for the other members of KISS in 1979-1981 during the recording of The Elder, when Metallica hadn’t even recorded and released anything until 1982. Also, Eric was in a disco band before he tried out for KISS. No way was he listening to nascent thrash metal when he said himself he didn’t even own any KISS records and was only casually aware of them.

Nobody put up any front that they were anything but positive for THE ELDER album when it came out. I remember them, and the press, seeming all for it...I was around then...I remember it. But for guys like me, the not-really-a-Kiss-fan-yet, if Kiss didn't "look" right in the make-up singing "I Was Made For Loving You," then how is a concept album gonna figure in to everything? It was a lot to swallow, and ultimately, it was laughed off. Even from major Kiss diehards. Even Kiss put it behind them rather quickly and stopped talking about it. Listening to it now, it didn't work because Kiss isn't The Moody Blues, or something like that. It was a good enough record, but Kiss needed to rock more. Anywho...these videos keep getting better and better!

They were crazy not to tour for the Elder... of course they wanted some extravagant stage to go along with it but this time it was more about the music and less about the bombs explosions and Fire! All they had to do is make a stage based on a castle look like what Ozzy did on speak of the Devil or the diary of the madman tour! Instead of doing some short show like they normally do go out and do the full Elder album in one set and then come out and do a second set of 10 to 12 songs of classics. I mean compared to some other bands Kiss shows were not that long around an hour and 15 to 20 minutes at the most when a lot of bands were going over 2 hours. They could have gotten it done especially with Eric Carr on the drums! I don't know how reliable Ace would have been to do a show like that every night: at that point in his career! Hell, why not they shouldn't have given up on it. They bailed way too easy on that project.

I really think KISS should have went straight to making Creatures than making The Elder. Eric deserved a better debut album and I think Creatures would have done better if it was released earlier rather than The Elder.

They didn't want to work with Ace because he was a drunk but they followed a cokehead (Ezrin) to Canada? Huh? 😲

The Elder needs to be listened to from the proper beginning to end (the re-release). I didn't like it in the beginning, but midway it got better and I liked the ending ("I" and "The Oath" are awesome).

If u took the best songs from 3 albums and made a single album, it would be a decent creation. But all of the 3 are full of filler tunes.

The Elder is what happens when Kiss starts chasing Pink Floyd, goes prog rock and completely jumps the shark. One embarrassment after the next. Every once in a while I put it on, going, it’s probably not that bad…. It’s worse.

Rush set the standard of concept albums so high, that Kiss' was a guaranteed failure, no matter how decent it was.

I remember a day back in the early 90's that my then nearly X girlfriend played her vinyl copy of The Elder. I stopped listening to Kiss shortly after my teen years so I had never heard this LP. I asked her, who is this. She said. KIZZ. I'm like no fricken way! Long story short, it's my favorite KIZZ record. The band has been dissing the album for decades. Blaming Ezrin and Ace mostly to distance themselves from it. G & P got butt hurt I suppose for the lack of attention (or negative reviews) but I still think for one brief moment in time, KIZZ almost were musicians. It wouldn't be until Revenge that I would listen again to KIZZ. That should be the KIZZ discography, the first 4, The Elder and Revenge. Everything else was just more dumbassary. IMHO.

I feel like I can find something good about any bad album I listen to, but with the elder, it felt like the second something was going well, it just takes such a turn lol. It just takes itself way too seriously, but I can listen to it. I think it has good moments that could’ve worked with better direction.

Ace is rock and roll. Paul plays out what he thinks his ideal of a rockstar is. Gene is delusional to think he wasn't addicted to his vice, let alone his vapid hollywood aspiration.

Ace got it. He knew even when he was Rock bottom.
