This video has been a life saver for me for the past 3 years. I watch it every time I have to reset the thermostat and time. Can't thank you enough Nick.
Please don't ever take this video down! Every time my power goes out - which is often in Southern California - I come right back to your video to get it fixed! You'd think I'd remember how by now...but nope. Thanks!🎉
Thank you Nick! We, like everyone else in these comments had the same problem and your video helped us no end. My husband has no idea about these things and has no patience on top of it, so it was a hopeless situation until we found your video. As your installer didn't tell you squat about how to reestablish the settings after a power outage, the guy who installed ours did the same and in fact told us that it was complicated and we would have to call him to reset everything. The last time he came -about 6 months ago- we got a $100 invoice to pay for his 5 minute 'service' visit. Another milk scam to suck the life out the the poor hapless homeowners (like us). Again, our sincere thanks!
Extremely helpful! This video has been a "life saver". I video'd the video, so I know I've always got it. I watched and used it in 2018 & 2019. I went back to it this year 2020, to see if Nick had said anything about getting a flashing "CODE 55", but no. So I looked it up in the manual and there is no such code. I called a really good efficient Rinnai person, who installed our tank, and even he didn't know what it was. He then called me back 20 minutes later to say that he found out from the Rinnai company that there is such a CODE 55, and it means that the tank is due or needs cleaning maintenance done. Now how did I not know that? Silly me. In the mean time, the Rinnai guy told me what to do to get rid of the flashing CODE 55, in order to get back to the time. So what you do is, you press the power button off quickly about 5 - 6 times in a row and it will clear it. It took me three attempts of doing this, but it did work.
Dude! This world needs more people like you! Thank you so much. My power went out last night and my water heater wouldn’t start up when the power came back. The manual doesn’t make sense and my landlord lives in China, so you helped me and my family out BIGTIME. You are my hero!
You have no idea how much you helped my house with your video! Thank you very much. It was something so simple, but I didn’t know how to do it but with your help guiding through the settings and what they are made it very easy. Thank you again.
Nick, thank you sooooo much for walking us through this. We have been stuck ever since our power went out and your video was just the trick. You rock, brutha
Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!!! Your video was a life saver after we had a power outage and i went to try and reset the darned thing.....was pulling my hair out trying to figure it out. It was only your video that brought me some sanity! Will save me tons of frustration in the future when we invariably lose power again. Thanks so much for posting.
VERY helpful. Great video explaining exactly how to set the time. I used the video after a power outage and after setting the time, the water heater started working again. Thanks
Thank you (a gogillion times) for this 👏👏👏👏. Power went off 3 days ago for 3 hours and reprogramming this controller is like being forced to fly a Space Shuttle with zero instructions! I was ready to go back (in time) to a full tank water heater. Your video worked so well that I am afraid to lose these step by step instructions when it happens again (AND it will). So, I am going to video this video (on my IPad) with my phone. I watched the installer get super flummoxed, it took him 3 times as long to program as it did for the install. The unit is fantastic but raspberries to whomever designed this control panel.
Thank you, thank you, thank you! I am NOT technical, husband away, outlet went bad, heater off so had to figure out how to get it going again (almost called the plumber lol). This was a lifesaver! Clock and timers set and hot water back within minutes of watching your video.
I don’t know if you tried this but the last time I lost power and when power came on back again it was 12:00. I turned the power off pressed function and then I got the blinking time light where I could adjust it to the current time. Once that’s done press the on/off switch again and the time is set. I do this every time we have a dst change. Hope this helps.
I looked for instructions on how to set the control module for 3 hours. I found your video, watched it through twice without attempting to do anything. I went to my heater, turned on your video, and had my timer reset in the amount of time it took me to watch the video again. How you figured this out without instruction is nothing less than genius. Thank you.
Thanks so much for this. Our power went out a few nights ago, and each time I try to reset the clock, when I turn the unit back on, I get "55" (or is it "SS"?) flashing where the clock read-out should be. Any suggestions? I don't see an error code of "55" (or "SS") in the manual troubleshooting guide.
Thanks so much for this inuitive demonstration. You just saved me a hundred dollar service call. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Denny Mangano, Hendersonville NC
Glad this is still posted. Lost power and tried resetting for the first time. One would think in this day and age Rinnai could make the controller a little more user friendly. Thanks!
Just got this installed last week and our power went off from a storm today. So that's when I realized there is no backup battery in this unit to maintain the clock or timer settings in the event of a power outage :-( There is no PDF file of the operating manual online anywhere unless you want to pay a third-party for a copy (don't know where they got it since the Rinnai website doesn't have it). I think software programmers of embedded designs must make the operation of electronic devices as complicated as possible so they feel they have super powers and can laugh at the rest of us trying to figure out how to even perform a simple task like setting the time! Maybe this is why I stayed with hardware electronics in my career since I don't have the DNA to make things more complicated than they have to be! Thanks for the video!
Quick question please. If you are going on vacation and turn water off to the house, do you turn the unit off while you are gone by simply pushing the on/off button? Then back on when you return and turn water back on? Great Video!
Nick - THANK YOU! At last, somebody has posted very informative guidance on how to operate this device. I can't tell you how grateful I am. My husband and I have had our Rinnai tankless water heater for about 2 years. We have had a few issues with it, and my husband has no clue on what to do and simply can't use a manual. So ..... I am the one who tries to resolve issues by trying to understand the manual. However, it is not very straight forward, or clear. So I have been very stressed over such what should be a simple task. So thank you very very much for helping me to understand how to use the wall device. Needless to say, I have another issue and was wondering if you could enlighten me. Our device is showing a code 63, which I think is a circulatory issue, so I keep having to unplug the unit and replug in order for the flame to ignite. It will stay on long enough to take a shower, but then goes back to 63. I have had a guy come in to look at it, and he says that the installation of the tankless heater is done very badly, and that is partly why we have issues. We also need a piece replaced which is to do with the filtering system. He has suggested that he removes the whole unit, and replaces it with a regular water heater. Do you have any suggestions before we fork out $1500+- ? If you don't - that's ok, I'm just pleased with what you have displayed. Lucy
Hi Lucy - I am glad you liked the video. I did some quick searching and found the following. Give this a try and let me know what you find out. Without having that same error I am not much help.... ... How to Fix: Use temperature controller to display flow rate (hold UP for 3 seconds and press the ON/OFF button). If flow rate is under 1.3 gpm, bleed air from tank and pump, clean inlet water filter, confirm your incoming flow rate is at least 6 gallons, and verify you have 30-50 PSI of inlet water pressure. ... Let me know if this helps!
Ive thought about shooting another video (with less sarcasm haha) to explain some of the other features and how I use them. Override though is to turn on the heater now with recirculation. This is good if you are about to take a shower or need hot water very soon. I have also used this during the winter to prevent freezing of pipes, though admittedly Tennessee isn't as cold as some places.
Thank you for the video, Nick, this saved me probably half day of reading and trial/error. I feel this is typical Japanese logic/control, have a Zojirushi rice cooker and the control panel structure is similar.
overall how how often do you have to fuss with this thing once you get it set up? I have an outdoor light timer similar to the logic this thing uses and I hate it. Second, how do you like the water heater overall? I am in the decision stage, I have two quotes from a plumber one for tank type one for tank less and can't decide if I want to bring all the complexity of a tankless into my life. e.g. this timer, hot water loop, crossover valves, annual maintenance etc. Tanks suck overall but they are maintenance free.
That is exactly what happened to me, the user manual really doesn't make sense and is not easy. QUESTION - do you have a video on how to set the timer for when to have the hot water on and off through out 24 hours in the day? setting the re-circulation mode Thank you!
Today is the fifth time I have watched this video to set the time on my water heater because it is so damn unintuitive! Thank you for posting this invaluable information. I will forever have it starred until the water heater dies!
I appreciate your time for setting up this panel. I don’t like this Rinnai tankless heater. I don’t recommend this heater. If you lost power, if will take a cold shower. I had it wasn’t happy.
...plumber tucked the controller into the cabinet so I have no access unless I remove the heater cover (outside unit). I'm trying to figure out why my tub faucet will drip a few drip during a 4 hour recirculation mode. I put a pressure gauge on the hose bib and it's normal y 60 PSI. The controller on my pool pump is even more cryptic - great video; thank you!
PDF online on Rinnai website, RUR98iN model info, click expand under documents. installation operation manual on PDF, pages 60-68 for clock and programing instructions
To set the time, simply Turn off the unit with the power button.. when its off hit function then up and down buttons to move the time up and down. hit function to set , then turn system back on with the on button ,no need to do all the other stuff in this video as of 7/3/2020. Turn it off first, then function button.. its dumb but thats really how you set the time.
Thank you so much! I was beating my head against the wall trying to figure this !@#13@! controller out. Thank you for confirming the lack of documentation. Your sarcasm was greatly appreciated.

Im glad I could help! That is crazy that they charged that amount...
Seriously, thank you! I’ve lost power several times and you are my go to video to figure out resetting it. I still haven’t managed to learn it yet.
I've used this video at least five times. I used it again tonight, as the power went out. Thank you for providing such a helpful video.

Sir, so appreciate this video. 👍🏼
Very helpful
Huge help, thank you! Have searched and searched online endlessly for the instructions with no luck.
Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU!!! Your video was a life saver after we had a power outage and i went to try and reset the darned thing.....was pulling my hair out trying to figure it out. VERY helpful. Great video explaining exactly how to set the time. I used the video after a power outage and after setting the time, the water heater started working again. Thanks
Thank you!! Lost power yesterday - no hot water today and I couldn't figure out a damned thing from the manual. You've saved my life - and my shower!

Back to your video after a GFI tripped during a San Diego rainstorm. Appreciate this video, AGAIN! Thank you.
Thank you, thank you, thank you! I am NOT technical, husband away, outlet went bad, heater off so had to figure out how to get it going again (almost called the plumber lol). This was a lifesaver! Clock and timers set and hot water back within minutes of watching your video.
So thankful for you posting this video. My controller failed a bunch of times due to power-outages and your video helped me to keep my sanity;)
I don’t know if you tried this but the last time I lost power and when power came on back again it was 12:00. I had trouble configure and the video really help. Tks and appreciate your effort Nick
Great job Nick! I literally refer back to this video every time my power goes out. Thank you👍🏼
Thanks Nick. The manual is of no help. Your video was spot on and the only one out there.
Thank you so much! Our power went out a week ago and every time i wanted hot water i had to go upstairs to hit override. This was fantastic!
Thank you. I have the instruction manual and couldn't figure out how to turn the timer off. Thanks again for your tutorial!
This video has also been my lifesaver. There’s only one other video but this is the best.
I looked for instructions on how to set the control module for 3 hours. I found your video, watched it through twice without attempting to do anything. I went to my heater, turned on your video, and had my timer reset in the amount of time it took me to watch the video again. How you figured this out without instruction is nothing less than genius. Thank you.
Every time my power goes out I have to watch your video again lol. Thank you, your video is such a great help for this user unfriendly device.
Just watched for the third time in three years. Game changer!
Agreed! You're a lifesaver!! I come back to your video every year. 🤩
You are a miracle worker! Thank you so much for the practical help, and your humor was very much appreciated.
I watch this video twice a year. Thank you!

I've watched this no less than 15 times, power off last night and I needed to figure it out once again
This was exactly what I needed! My power was off for 14 hours last night. Thank you!
Glad this is still posted.
Lost power and tried resetting for the first time. One would think in this day and age Rinnai could make the controller a little more user friendly. Thanks!
You made that super complicated process extremely easy! Thank you!
Can't tell you how much time you saved me. Thanks so much!
Many Thanks, I would never have got there without your Video

If you call Rinnai, and ask for a manual, they should email one to you free of charge.
there is on Rinnai website. pull up RUR98iN model info on rite side, click expand, then instillation/operation manual on PDF is available
Quick question please. If you are going on vacation and turn water off to the house, do you turn the unit off while you are gone by simply pushing the on/off button? Then back on when you return and turn water back on? Great Video!
Just press the time button (Bottom right) until the oval dial in the center is just an empty box. :).
My timer icon is blinking “55” instead of showing the time. Everything seems working fine. Do you know if and what errors message that could be?
Here again... I never learned. Always I have to count on you to save the day
This is so helpful! I need more Rinnai help videos like how to adjust my timer settings.

Thanks for the informative video. Any chance you could share how to make sure recirculating is always on? Also, what does override mean? Thanks!

I've watched this so many times. Thank you
This video was very useful. Thanks so much for dealing with ambiguity and making this video.

Wow. Thank you. I read the manual for about 20mon and got nothing from it. You video majorly help. Even with the cat in heat in the back ground. 😄😉
I go to your video about 5 times a year when my power goes out. Thanks

Really well done. I was stressing until I found this. Thank you.
2023 I still referring this video to do the setting 😂
Thanks Nick, I have the same unit and hate it’s interface. Thanks for making my life a little easier.
thank you for posting this. you are awesome for taking the time to do this and saving my sanity

Thank you so much for this video, was so helpful for me! question, do you know how to fix a error code 55 on rinnai tankless water heater? Thanks
How do you change the timings in the circle as to what hours of the day it should heat the water?
Thank you
Misplaced my manual
And been a year since dts and I forgot how to change the clock
Which as you said should be simple
Thanks again
Thank you! This controller may be the most frustrating ever! YOu really helped!

Nick - very helpful - thank you - how do you set priority to specific areas and or showers?
Can’t believe in this age.. we still have such archaic controller !!!😮
Thank you. Saved a lot of time and research to reset after power outage.
thank you so much for this!! spent SO much time trying to figure this out and your video really helped!
Thank you, Nick! Thank you for preventing further brain damage.
Thank you so much Nick!! Every word you said is true and I am sure I will be using your video every time I have to set the clock!!
PDF online on Rinnai website, RUR98iN model info, click expand under documents. installation operation manual on PDF, pages 60-68 for clock and programing instructions
Thank you so much! The manual is useless and your video was very helpful.
Our power knocked out the settings. Your right, this it’s not a user friendly device at all but your video was very helpful! Thanks you so much!
Thank you! That’s what I needed post power outage

Wow! Your video was EXTREMELY helpful!!! Thank you!
This guy is a lifesaver. I spent $125 with a plumber twice before I found this video.
Thank you! You save me a ton of time and pain.
I REALLY appreciate you doing this video! Many thanks!
Thank you Nick this video helps a lot hello from Ladysmith Canada
Thank you so much! I was beating my head against the wall trying to figure this !@#13@! controller out. Thank you for confirming the lack of documentation. Your sarcasm was greatly appreciated.
Thank you!!! This was amazing. We appreciate you for posting this!!!
This was an awesome video. Thank you so much for making this. You are correct...NOTHING is intuitive on this panel!
I refer to this video every couple of months. I saved it for future reference
Thanks. After One year, I finally was able to get it fixed
Thanks, I watch it after every power failure.
Thank you, it was easy to follow your instructions.
The world needs more people like you 👍
Love the Rinnai products.... I've installed 300+. Would not recommend anything else
Thanks! Fingers crossed, I think you solved my problem.
Bruh! lifesaving information!!!!
Glad it could help :)
Thank you. I were blind like a bat 🦇 until i watch your clip. 😄
Life saving video! Thanks Nick !
Thank you again! I'm going to write the time set, once and for all!
Great help. Had same problem. Rinnai makes great product, but lacks common sense in writing manuals
Life saver! Thank you😀
Omg! I just bought a house today with this, the devils work, installed
Saved my life! Thank you.
Well done Nick, big Thank You!
