The instructor said that the center diff was open-this is incorrect-this is a part time 4WD system, and when locked in to 4WD-splits power 50/50 front to rear-if the center were open-it would be AWD-while effective,is not and will never be as effective as 4WD off road.I own Subaru’s and I own a 2018 TRD Pro 4Runner and the Subaru’s will NEVER go where the 4 Runner will. 4 Runners are built tough. The quality feel of the materials are made to last. I have a 2004 4Runner and it's still going strong. Little known fact these vehicles share their power trains with the Land Cruiser Prado from Europe. Most of the Prado is kept for the Lexus GX and slightly down market for the Toyota versions.
The Toyota guy needs to know the 4Runner better. The 4th mode is Rock. The TRD Pro does not have a center differential. Only the Limited edition has a center differential. The TRD Pro also does not have KDSS which is an option only on the Trail edition.
in pre production/these press presentations the TRD PRO did have KDDS and it was about 1/2 higher in the front. final production version lost the KDDS and was lowered about tat 1/2 in the front. so he wasn't wrong about the model they were driving, just didn't end up like that when it hit the showrooms.

I've had my TRDP since November of 2014. You know what I love it to death. Myself and all the other TRDP guys included agree that it is indeed under powered for its weight, another 35HP we would be happy. Correction on the TRDP it does NOT come with KDSS Standard. The Multi-Terrain in 4LO does a pretty good job on the trails, but if you immediately put it in A-Trac, it would indefinitely crawl itself out of anything. Great video, slightly disappointed that it received second next to the power wagon, but that's just because I'm biased.

I have a Toyota 4runner and I would highly recommend it to anyone who wants a reliable all around vehicle. Reliability is unbeatable with Toyota trucks, and they are competitive with towing and very competitive with offroading.
2000 pounds lighter bro, thats a helllll of a lot of weight especially on the snow, sand, mud or any other loose terrain. toyota have a real winner here.
It's interesting how the KDSS system actually works. When both wheels on one side of the vehicle are under load, a hydraulic ram at the front and rear lock with each other, providing a pivot point for the sway bars to do their job. When opposite corner wheels articulate the rams don't lock against each other completely, the amount of locking is controlled electronically, eliminating the effect of the sway bars and allowing increased wheel articulation. You get all of the benefits of an electronic swaybar disconnect when offroading, but don't have to worry about activating them. I wonder if the 4Runner outperforms the Tacoma offroad, and how they both compare to the Wrangler. I am sure the lack of a front locker and a lack of solid front axel probably hurts them vs. the Wrangler. Especially considering the implications of independent front suspension on ground clearance and the inability to lift a Toyota with KDSS.
CACressida I was wrong when saying you couldn't lift it at all. More accurately it limits you to a lift of 3 inches max, and frequently people report the vehicle leans to the front passenger side after the lift. Some claim the fix for the lean is simple, involving opening a couple valves on flat ground to redistribute the oil in the kdss, but in fact you have to take your truck to Toyota and have them recalibrate the system, apparently using some special tool.

When I'm off-road, I rarely use them myself, but make for handy tools, especially if you don't have a spotter in those rare tricky situations. I want to make one more comment; about the presenter's claim that the 4Runner being the last of the body on frame SUVs. Being a former owner of the Xterra, at the time of this review, Nissan had not yet announced the decision to discontinue. At that time, he was wrong, the Xterra is a body on frame and the Pro4X was an extremely capable off-roader. It is too bad the classification lost another comrade. When there are so few players, innovation slows to a "crawl". I know the 4Runner is due for an update soon, I'd hate to see Toyota not put much thought into it.

Byzantine I wish I could find a sedan/coupe that could go that far, I'm not a truck guy... and you mean 4WD/4X4 on land cruiser right? I rarely see them here in canada.
I am not sure where you come up with your ground clearance spec. I just looked up the power wagon on their page and Ground Clearance - at curb weight - Running Ground Clearance: 7.1
+ToAstYNaChO www.ramtrucks.com/model-compare/detailed-chart/?modelYearCode=CUT201614# No truck has more than 7.4 based upon their page. Standard spec with 285 tire on the power wagon is 7.1 clearance. I realize all the press release info says 14.5, must be wrong on their web site.
kwatters63 They actually might be measuring from the ground to the bottom of the front differential. I've seen that in some places. But true ground clearance is from the ground to the underbelly
There's isn't, this guy is mistaken on a few counts. It's a 2 speed transfer case, which means you put it in 4hi or 4lo and it locks the front and rear axles together. If it had a center diff, it could be full time 4wd (Land Cruiser, Range Rover, GX 470). The 4Runner Limited has a center diff and full time 4wd, but you can't lock the rear diff for off roading. I guess the reason the TRD Pro 4Runner doesn't have center diff + 3 diff locks (front/rear/center) is price. I don't even know if range rovers have 3 locks anymore. The only vehicle that I'm sure has 3 diff locks is a G-Class Mercedes, but it's 2 or 3 times the price of a 4Runner.
dingo5678 I thought he was saying that they're available with an electronically controlled center diff, but the specific one they were in had part time 4wd with low range.
George Sako 2016 is essentially unchanged except for a couple of color offerings. The Inferno Orange is being replaced by Sand-something(some tan color I forget the name ...). There are some minor changes to standard options, but essentially unchanged overall.
The ayy lmao It's fun, comfortably hade 3 adults, 1 infant, 3 large dogs, and camping gear for a weekend all in it. I usually get 15-17 MPG mostly county driving, but i have a lead foot too. Got 15MPG towing a Bass Boat on county highways, and 23MPG on a 1000Mi roadtrip as long as I did about 60MPH. Going faster is an insignificant mileage drop.
This 4runner is awesome. I can't imagine a better vehicle in it's category?Chevy blazer gone. Nissan Pathfinder, Ford explorer & Dodge Durango/Jeep grand Cherokee are now cuv's4 runner keeps it 4 real!
Question For anyone with a 5th gen, how often do you guys change your oil? Do you wait til the recommended 10,000 miles or do you just do every 5 like a regular car? I have a 2013 and I've been so tossed up about this lol. But side note, for the most part I love it. Sr5 Premium. Not gonna lie, she could get a little frustrating in the city sometimes with all the stop and go but on the highway, in snow and especially off-road, its a beast. Baught the 2013 cuz I wasn't to fond of the face lift on the '14s. Only one that looks good now is the trail and trd. The new sr5s and limiteds look like garbage lol
Kenny M 10,000 miles. Toyota wouldn't recommend this if they didn't do countless hours of research. No reason not to trust the recommendation and manual.
Sean Taylor , I think it's great that the Tacoma still offers a manual transmission, I just wish I could fit in it. The seat isn't height adjustable, the steering wheel barely moves, I struggle to get in and have to uncomfortably twist to get in and out and don't get me started on trying to operate the clutch. I'm just too tall and I really loved the Tacoma. The 4Runner leaves a little to be desired for head room, but other than that, it's significantly more spacious than the Tacoma, especially for rear passenger space.
reason for unibody instead of body on frame chassis is because to reduce weight and help gas mileage. Plenty of unibody vehicles are very capable off-roading. Jeep Grand Cherokee & Range Rover
chrrrr what is SJ? And my point is that unibody SUVs are very capable off-roading as well. Doesn't necessarily need a body-on-frame w/ chassis vehicle.
I feel like Toyota should fit an 8 speed 5.7 V8 in this car, I would definitely trade my 4th gen in for this one. (if they put the V8 in it) although, I DO think the 4.0 is outdated and underpowered it is still a good engine.
That crawl mode seems dangerous... As u can see from that VID there was a glitched moment that the computer unexpectedly speed up and the guy lost control for a minute.
This guy is a Toyota rep and really said the 4runner has an open center diff???! There is no center diff (in the trd models) hence why your T-case shifts through 2wd, part time 4wd H, and part time 4wd L. If there was an center diff you'd get a full time 4wd system like in the Limited.
crawl control is meant to be used only to free yourself if you get stuck, what you're supposed to use in this truck is 4low rear locker and the terrain selector which is basically a modified tc, doesn't make a big difference, so you still need your skills
the US has 4runner , tundra as a mid size SUV from toyota powered by straight 4 or V6 engine in japan/asia/middle east/australia has the land cruiser Prado using the same V6 and straight 4 (know as lexus GX 460 and it has a V8 in the USA and internationally )...well you guys do have a prado...but only the expensive version all lexus cars are sold the same around the world and they come from the Japanese factories only with the exception of few japanese market only models like the lexus version of corrolla ,,,,yeah ,,,,there is a lexus version of toyota corolla LOL (lexus HS) the last 2 generations were only in japan ....not sure if the last version made an appearance in world dealerships
photonphisher That depends on whether the 4Runner in this video was a pre-production or production model. I believe the the pre-production versions had more lift in the front as well as KDSS (and moonroof). The production models have far less lift in the front and no KDSS. If this was pre-production, then the PR guy said the correct thing, although I hope these comparisons to other vehicles are not being done with pre-production models anymore as the TRD Pro model has been on the market now for almost 1 year.
Dave Newman I doubt this was a pre-production unit. If it was, then its too bad and they should not be driving it around to show the features and capability since the prod TRD pro has been out a long while.
I would like to see it with a load, or maybe in some harsh terrain, maybe something to get it to flex... How about a wet grassy hill? That is more like the real terrain that this vehicle may see in the the real life...
Keep in mind these are very low speeds. The amount of energy you're putting into the brakes is at a far lower rate than if you were traveling at speed down a hill. Engine braking can still be used, with brakes in addition. I'm sure they've done the math, and this is for off-road, not going down graded roads.
+Abraham Battashi What in the world are you talking about bruh. They aren't using this thing to tow boats and trailer down a graded road. Crawl control is only used while off roading. I'm also sure they don't want to use engine breaking, rather engine braking.

+kwatters63 No, it's definitely 14.5. You probably got the spec for the standard 2500
+ToAstYNaChO www.ramtrucks.com/model-compare/detailed-chart/?modelYearCode=CUT201614#
No truck has more than 7.4 based upon their page. Standard spec with 285 tire on the power wagon is 7.1 clearance. I realize all the press release info says 14.5, must be wrong on their web site.
kwatters63
They actually might be measuring from the ground to the bottom of the front differential. I've seen that in some places. But true ground clearance is from the ground to the underbelly
Excellent Video
How come there's a center diff? I thought those were for AWD. My Titan off-road 4X4 only has a transfer case and differentials front and rear.
The only vehicle that I'm sure has 3 diff locks is a G-Class Mercedes, but it's 2 or 3 times the price of a 4Runner.
doesn't this have either a part-time (lockable) center diff or the torsen LSD center if it's full time 4wd?
dingo5678 Part time 4WD, no center diff.
photonphisher that's what i thought, toyota man said open center diff controlled by traction control
dingo5678 I thought he was saying that they're available with an electronically controlled center diff, but the specific one they were in had part time 4wd with low range.
+dingo5678 The Limited model is the one with the torsen LSD center diff.
It doesn't have KDSS!
It's always bugged me when people call SUV's trucks haha. I love the look of the 2015 4runner.
***** it is called a truck because it uses a truck chassis, in Texas this would be called a truck on its license plate.....maybe other states too idk.
Nice review
What was that clunk noses when driving around the cones??
Jonathan Figueroa that was probably keys ..
Hasan Can Güzel Didn't sound much like keys, but i did come to the comments for this reason, some of the other vehicles had similar noises.
In this particular case I believe it's the user manual in the glove box, but keys are probably heard in many of the vehicles as well.
Is 2015 the last year for body on frame construction??Anyone knows for sure?
George Sako The PR guy made it seem like it will continue.
George Sako 2016 is essentially unchanged except for a couple of color offerings. The Inferno Orange is being replaced by Sand-something(some tan color I forget the name ...). There are some minor changes to standard options, but essentially unchanged overall.
Thanks man
Ok so I do not get one thing here. The car has a low range gear and some electric crolling system?
Are there any of yall that actually own this 4runner? How does it do as a daily? Any major complaints?
The ayy lmao It's fun, comfortably hade 3 adults, 1 infant, 3 large dogs, and camping gear for a weekend all in it. I usually get 15-17 MPG mostly county driving, but i have a lead foot too. Got 15MPG towing a Bass Boat on county highways, and 23MPG on a 1000Mi roadtrip as long as I did about 60MPH. Going faster is an insignificant mileage drop.
He said that the Pro has KDSS, I believe that is incorrect.
The Nissan Xterra is body on frame right?
+Zachary Blanchard Yes, but it's smaller.
They're out of production now too.
Wait the last in its class? I thought the Wrangler and Xterra were on body frame?
Parker Faulk They're probably a slightly different class of SUV.
awesome video
This 4runner is awesome. I can't imagine a better vehicle in it's category?Chevy blazer gone. Nissan Pathfinder, Ford explorer & Dodge Durango/Jeep grand Cherokee are now cuv's4 runner keeps it 4 real!
+tony tone Granc Cherokee has been a crossover from day 1... just a crossover with as much capability as a 4Runner
I didn't think TRD pro was available with kdss.
The cargo in these would be protected, too, under inclement weather unlike a pickup where, to approach that, you have to buy a cover.
My understanding is that TRD PRO's do not come with KDSS.
The pre-production prototypes had a 1" front lift and KDSS (along with sunroof and side mirror blinkers). The actual production model has neither.
Gazziza29 The production model has a small front and rear lift with more travel than other models.
Would the guy in the car with you be considered a sales engineer?
Tyler Havens Not sure what his exact title was; essentially the folks tagging along were all PR reps.
Why are you comparing a Toyota 4Runner to a Dodge Power Wagon PU? The two are completely different.
Can u do grand Cherokee review?
30 years ago they were making that much power with 3 litres... what happened?
Does this come in a manual?
no, the Tacoma does though
5k miles your engine will last forever!
@@Gazziza29 😂
how tall are you and how well do you fit?
Bob Sacamano 6'1", fit fine!
It seems like there is a TON of steering wheel play... It doesn't like like a tight stiff feeling drive.
+Just Maui'd Photo Booths Most off road vehicles are built that way on purpose. It allows for greater comfort and control when off pavement
I do have to say that you didn't need 4 lo for this or the power wagon. 2 wheel drive would have worked for most of the off road portion.
Grant Jones having the TRD PRO 4RUNNER myself, I can say that 2WD would have done that whole course.
Lost lost how? I'd take the Toyota anytime
yup, though I'd take a new Tacoma myself. It's still available with a manual ;)
7150285 Not to mention the XJ Cherokee which is very popular for offroading and was one of the original Unibody SUVs.
chrrrr all Cherokees are unibody, as well as Land Rovers
7150285 Your point?
7150285 Also, I'm pretty sure the SJ wasn't.
chrrrr what is SJ? And my point is that unibody SUVs are very capable off-roading as well. Doesn't necessarily need a body-on-frame w/ chassis vehicle.
I feel like Toyota should fit an 8 speed 5.7 V8 in this car, I would definitely trade my 4th gen in for this one. (if they put the V8 in it) although, I DO think the 4.0 is outdated and underpowered it is still a good engine.
I would buy this, but I live in a city and would never be able use it to its full potential
is that all 4 runner can do at off road? =(
That crawl mode seems dangerous... As u can see from that VID there was a glitched moment that the computer unexpectedly speed up and the guy lost control for a minute.
723lion What moment are you referring to? I was driving it and it never lost control.
723lion no that was the moment he switched the speed of the crawl function from medium to high.
+723lion the crawl mode seems weird to me, i dont understand it, i want to be able to control my wheel speed in 4 lo.
+flybyav8tor You can, the crawl is an option.
I'm surprised this wasn't supercharged or something, not just a TRD but a TRD PRO!
Competing against the Ram 2500 Powerwagon? They are not even in the same realm?
needs that 5.7v8 from tundra/tacoma
I'll take that 5.7 tacoma you mentioned......
Frankie G 11mpg is no bueno.
Put a turbo diesel in it and put the spare tyre on the rear and I'd have one. Pitty you can't get them in Australia.
Whats mogal mean?
bumpy
+blair170 Thanks.
This guy is a Toyota rep and really said the 4runner has an open center diff???! There is no center diff (in the trd models) hence why your T-case shifts through 2wd, part time 4wd H, and part time 4wd L. If there was an center diff you'd get a full time 4wd system like in the Limited.
I'd rather have the trail edition for its connected suspension and just put a lift kit on it from icon.
I want to take my lx somewhere like this
so what happened to having the skill of off roading. guess the new 4x4s are taking the fun and skill of off roading away and making it way to easy.
crawl control is meant to be used only to free yourself if you get stuck, what you're supposed to use in this truck is 4low rear locker and the terrain selector which is basically a modified tc, doesn't make a big difference, so you still need your skills
4runner competing with powerwagon? First time I’ve heard that
the US has 4runner , tundra as a mid size SUV from toyota powered by straight 4 or V6 engine
in japan/asia/middle east/australia has the land cruiser Prado using the same V6 and straight 4 (know as lexus GX 460 and it has a V8 in the USA and internationally )...well you guys do have a prado...but only the expensive version
all lexus cars are sold the same around the world and they come from the Japanese factories only
with the exception of few japanese market only models like the lexus version of corrolla ,,,,yeah ,,,,there is a lexus version of toyota corolla LOL (lexus HS) the last 2 generations were only in japan ....not sure if the last version made an appearance in world dealerships
We have the Land Cruiser in America too
we have landcruiser ....landcruiser 2 and landcruiser prado
the main landcruiser is universal (USA included)
such a manly and masculine car.
What happens when you hand a local dealer salesmen a two page info packet the day prior and tell him "good luck“.
TRD pro does not have KDSS
photonphisher That's true. The Toyota rep didn't really seem to know what he was talking about. The Trail Edition of the 4Runner has it though.
photonphisher That depends on whether the 4Runner in this video was a pre-production or production model.
End 2022 the 4Runner still running but the power wagon is at yunker 😂
you'll have vertigo watching this review
I could do that coarse in my one wheel drive bicycle
The land crusier is unstoppable lol You should have asked about the next generation 4runner
poor PR rep, struggling to explain his own car
Don't get how an suv compares to a pick up truck
4runners are like sore peckers , you can't beat em
center diff wtf this guy smoking?
THIS IS NOT OFFROADING!! i can do this at 40mph in my 2006 grand cherokee.
meencantan los toyo
makes more power with premium fuel
if the crawl mode is using the brakes instead of engine breaking then it is useless and dangerous for long hill... the brakes will overheat and fail
Keep in mind these are very low speeds. The amount of energy you're putting into the brakes is at a far lower rate than if you were traveling at speed down a hill. Engine braking can still be used, with brakes in addition. I'm sure they've done the math, and this is for off-road, not going down graded roads.
+Abraham Battashi - you want engine braking not engine breaking....
+Abraham Battashi What in the world are you talking about bruh. They aren't using this thing to tow boats and trailer down a graded road. Crawl control is only used while off roading. I'm also sure they don't want to use engine breaking, rather engine braking.
