  • Ryan takes the 2018 Toyota 4Runner TRD Off Road on a family trip to Crater Lake, where he enjoys the sights and get some use of the Crawl Control system on a sandy and loose surface. Even though the entertainment tech is out of date, and it rides like a truck, is this 4Runner still worth consideration?

I bought my TRD OFF ROAD in February after watching overland expedition lol. I like the fact it doesn't have much electronics...less problems down the road. I love my 4runner!

Really all the people seen griping online about the poor fuel economy or lack of push button start simply want this vehicle to be something that it clearly isn't.
My advice to them is to go look at something else, there are plenty of other vehicles out there to choose from...leave the 4Runner alone.

I love the basics. I hate that everything is now electronic push start and turn a knob for FWD. The biggest reason Im even in the market for 4runner is its utilitarian old school approach.

I own the same 4runner and it's awesome. Sure it lacks technology in certain areas but it makes up for it in so many other ways. Put some larger ko2 tires and a mild lift and it's very impressive!
That Hill just needed the rear locker, but that's what is good about the 4runner, so many off road gadgets you can choose whatever one you want and it'll get the job done. Atrac, multi terrain select, locker, crawl control. You choose

which one do you like better? its hard to choose between the 4 runner and tacoma. The tacoma has a way newer engine and more tech. Ive seen a lot of videos that critique the 4runner for using outdated equipment. Kinda reminds me of the frontier. Idk whats best for my needs but i know that i want; either brand a new 4 runner or tacoma but they are just so hard to choose from. They both seem like capable vehicles.

    • @StrokedGT
      @StrokedGT 6 лет назад +4

@@beatstick995 the new Tacoma engine has been criticized for being weak, all it has it better tech like push start and info dash. 4runner is better in every practical way. Fully boxed frame, shorter wheelbase if you plan to OffRoad, electric powered seats, an actual shift lever for the transfer case, more audio speakers, MTS and ATRAC, not one or the other. 4Runner is just better.

    • @celticmandoplayer

For me, the 4Runner is my favorite and the one that I drive all the time. For me, the 4Runner feels more powerful in the gearing than the Tacoma. Personally I like that the 4Runner has a keyed ignition and sure it doesn't have the sensors, but nothing that I miss. Don't get me wrong, I really like our Tacoma. I'm just more of a SUV kinda person :-) Either way you go, it's a fantastic choice ! Hope that helps ! And yes, both VERY capable vehicles!

That’s a really tough job to find something similar to a 4Runner. It’s really hard to compare that subaru and the Acura MDX. Really the only thing that comes close is the Jeep JL unlimited. All these another AWD vehicles are really not meant for off-roading. What’s terrible is Kia mildly beefed up their garbage and ran it threw a Utah trial with a pro driver. Hopefully Ford doesn’t screw up the new Bronco that also might be a contender.

But did he really need crawl control in that moment... on the real, you can’t compare a Runner to anything else. My off-road has never denied me a spot on a mountain yet and I drag an overland trailer with me. Best bang for your buck in the off-road land. And you don’t have to stress about breaking down. Anyone who prefers tech over performance should buy a crossover. (KISS) Keep it simple stupid

Imagine what this truck would do with just a set of real tires. Those are highway tires. Put a set of nittos or bfgs on it and it will go wherever u need to go. My wife has a 2018 4 runners offroad and i have a 2018 tacoma. I had a tundra but it was just tooo big for my needs and gas milage was really bad. But i go into tight spots and both of these trucks do the job. Wr also live in a remote area and since we always drive yotas we are often the only ones still going when the weather gets bad. Ha

I had a 13 4RUNNER Trail....now I have a 17 Tacoma 4wd Offroad.....I can't get comfortable in the Tacoma. I know all Toyotas seem to have the low seating position, but the 4Runner was much better. I also recently had a bunch of camping / overlanding gear stolen out of the bed of the truck. In the 4Runner, it would have been harder. It makes the truck vs. suv....which is right for me argument that much more difficult. Maybe I should have kept the 4Runner.

      @thebigempty_5792 6 лет назад +2

Sweet....yes, I've been eyeing them again. The 13 4Runner Trail I had, I purchased used, it was such a rarity in my area and it had the KDSS. The only issue was some rust underneath. The dealer knocked off enough to really hook me in. The truck was from Canada and I'm in Texas. I guess they got it at auction, since the dealer knew how coveted they are down here. Anyways, I really let the rust issue govern my decision to sell it, since I was looking for a long term vehicle to gear up for my needs. This Tacoma may go bye bye. The 6 speed tranny is pointless, it constantly shifts to 5 at the slightest incline. The 4Runner downshifted but not nearly like the Tacoma. At least the 4Runner still has a 5 speed.

I know this is 2 years old. But, I just got the 2020 4 runner TRD offroad. The only difference is the new infotainment center and the Toyota "safety" group (adaptive cruise).
Our 4 runner is so comfortable. It doesn't get the best MPG, we average 18. We just got 21.2 on a trip to Idaho Falls (from central Utah).
We are very happy with our purchase. It won put over others for two reasons, the off-road capability, comfort, cargo room.
Again, I absolutely love this rig

No point in comparing the runner to every other cross over. This is not a crossover. This is basically a body on frame and feels and even looks like a truck. The last of a dying breed and that’s the beauty of it and why it is adored in the off road and overlanding community. Plus it has unlimited mods that can be done. Love my runner and wouldn’t trade it for anything else. Lifted it and Threw some big tires on it and it’s the sexiest vehicle and my dream vehicle

I enjoyed watching this but wondered how much better this vehicle would do off road with decent tires. I have a 2013 Trail edition and put Nitto AT rubber on it when purchased because we actually do quite a bit of off roading. The vehicle goes through or over about anything. The crawl control and KDSS work superbly. I hope to keep this vehicle for years. Current models require most of the features I have in mine be added on as expensive options such as crawl control, moon roof, and sliding cargo tray. In 5 years I've not had one problem which is not unexpected. This is my 4th 4Runner since the mid 90's.

I have the same vehicle as reviewed - 2018 T4RO. IF you want reliable and aren't swayed by bells and whistles and actually take your car off the road, then you are hard pressed to find a better vehicle in the $ range. As far as I'm concerned, the only fail is the stock rubber - total mismatch for its intended use. First thing I swapped. That and the front lift - factory rake is mall crawl/mileage driven. But coming from anF350 quad cab long box - this is noble, compact and the interior room is fantastic.

I wanted a key start so bad because if you replace that fob that you have to have on you for the push button start it will cost you $600.00 to replace it. Also, if anything goes wrong with the push button it will cost a minimum of $1,100 to fix it. Toyota then has to reprogram the push button start system.

My 2016 Trail is awesome on and off road , and to be quite blunt that little hill starting at 5:49 is not enough to bog it down enough to have to use the HELP ME OUT OF JAM crawl controls ... knowing how to maneuver it through the dips would have done better justice to the 4 runner save the crawl control for real bad situations.
Here in rural farm country Connecticut in winters it gets pretty interesting with snow and ice of all types and descriptions , I have not had to engage 4 high many times to say little of the crawl control system .

A 4Runner is built for the purpose of being a superior off road vehicle not a luxury suv. If you want all the lux items to go along with the reliability and off road prowess get the Lexus gx otherwise stop complaining. And why complain of no Apple car play? If your phone has Bluetooth just connect it. That’s what I do...problem solved. My 2012 SR5 would have made that hill without crawl control. Dude you don’t know that vehicle!

Bluetooth only transmits audio. If you want to use mobile phone navigation then there needs to be a suction mount of some sort. Also, CarPlay and Android Auto do a much better job with all hands free activities like making calls and sending text messages. Where we live, Washington, mobile “eDUI” is a primary offense. No holding or using a mobile device while driving. If you own a business and spend any time on the road, AA and CP are essential IMHO.

Driving Sports TV phone laws in Washington DC are similar. But the vehicle does offer lots of hand free options for both phone and audio. You can press the aux and music will play or for me ask Siri. I understand the need for convenience but again the 4Runner is a true off reader that offers some good amenities. People who want more should opt for the limited or move up to the Lexus GX. My plan is to get an LC next. No lackey no there! Good review by you though.

Wife has a 17 4runner trd OR and I have a 12 tacoma sr5 4x. Reason we chose them and likely a Tundra soon, is because Toyota has stuck to its guns in the face of an ever increasing demand for "luxury off- road vehicles =gimmicks". Give me function over fashion anyday. Although I will admit both V6s tend to be gutless in the mountains, especially towing or hauling. Wouldn't change them otherwise.

I love the 4Runner, I was about to buy one in 2016 but ended with a Outback 3.6 Touring. Same price, more stuff and comfort... But... I'm about to get a new car, and I'm getting a JLU Sahara with some stuff... I really wished Toyota did what Jeep did, redesign but keep it like the classic. The reason I don't buy the 4Runner is it's age, engine, no manual, ancient media group and all those. Annoys me that the Tacoma TRD Pro comes with lane keep and all those things, newer everything, but the 4Runner just stopped in time... I understand it's cool and all but, for the price, it deserves a redesign... I'm saying this cause it will be a daily driver too and lots of highways but I want the off-road, that's why, today, I'm going with the JLU (still think the 2018 Wrangler is overpriced tho)

I have a 2018 red 4Runner Off Road Premium. I LOVE that I have a Key Start and a stick for the 4x4. That's 2 major reasons that I love it so much. One of the MANY things I love about mine is the sliding tray in the back!! It's not some new great piece 0of technology but I LOVE for grocery shopping. When I come out of the store I can pull the tray out, load my groceries on the tray and then push it back. When I get home I can pull that tray to the first position, take those groceries in and then pull it out all the way for the groceries on the back of the tray!! I love this because I'm not bending way over here or really stretching way over their to get my groceries. It's also GREAT for a trip and all my luggage. If you want my opinion BUY ONE! Make sure you get one with the slide out tray! I love that thing! ha

Mike R reviewers who complain about the lack of tech never look at the limited. I love my 2012 SR5 but wish I had opted for the limited because of the full time 4wd in addition to the other extras.

When lifting it be careful of the X-Reas suspension system , it only allows spacer lifts so you usually rip it out if you're doing a 2-3 in. Lift

Oh yeah, I wont be doing a spacer lift, I'll be either going with icon or King after ripping away XREAS. It's practically a brand new vehicle, so waiting for bit more for XREAS to wear out.

One glitch I see at 6:00 is that you could air down the tires and that would give the tires a better traction. Then the tire pressure warning light would blind ya. :D

Lol. The technology in the 4Runner is far from gimmicky. The locker, crawl control and ATRAC all work incredibly well and can really get you out of stuck situation. Know your tech before you start hating. Toyo tech is the real deal bro.

How is the 4WD system works VS AWD ?
is it really good or you are better off with a Land Cruiser ?

No crossover is relevant when reviewing a 4Runner.. The only vehicles to mention to compare is the Wrangler, G Wagon, Lexus GX 460 or other worthy body on frame SUVs... Comparing a SUV to a unit body and frame crossover is like me comparing my house cat to a wild adult African lion.. Do the crossover and 4Runner have 4 wheels?.. Yes.. Does my cat and the lion both have retractable claws? Of course.. THAT DOESN'T MAKE THEM THE SAME THING! Lol.. Crossovers are just oversized hatchbacks

Very good review. Like many of those comments below, I vote for simplicity and reliability. Those who want all the little bells and whistles and leather seats and push button engine start and that dreaded "stop/start" can go buy a luxury sedan. I want to go off-road with a reliable vehicle that has been refined over the years rather than constantly changed to suit the yuppies. Besides, the yuppies and soccer moms rarely, if ever go off-road. Let them purchase the SR5 Premium. I want a wilderness vehicle that can get me out there and back. I am sticking with my 2018.
