    Dice portrayed a character; a stereotype of some guys in Brooklyn. If you lived in NY, you recognized it and probably knew a few guys just like that. And those guys were in his audiences at times but I"m sure they didn't see the character. They saw Dice as one of them.

    • @VintageWhiteTerror
      @VintageWhiteTerror Год назад +13

      Yes but if he’s “just a Brooklyn stereotype” then why bother paying to watch him? Just go to NY and watch a random a$$hole, it’s free. I think you’re missing the point. Playing a character well is making meaning from his act, a deeper sense of humor buried in that character. It really wasn’t there, the forward racism was the act, full stop.

    Eddie Murphy’s “Delirious” years before Dice was filled with “sexism”, “racism” and “homophobia”. For that matter Richard Pryor and George Carlin initiated aspects of it. Dice Clay just pulverized the sick toilet humor on another level in an age/era where people weren’t focused on “political correctness”. Dice’s character was meant to be offensive and he had an album he spewed vice versa on men for women for that matter. He was revolutionary next level like N.W.A. and the Geto Boys were revolutionary next level in hip-hop/rap in the late 1980’s/early 1990’s.

I also remember how they absolutely broke him down and I remember watching him crying on I think it was arsenio Hall and explaining that he’s not really the act you saw on stage in real life. What’s sad is as kids we even knew that it was a comedy act but adults at the time were so hell bent on ruining him and his life.
