One of Galway's masterpieces in my opinion and will always hold fond memory's. The sid chip made it all possible of course. Takes me back to my schooldays 1981-1986 long live the c64, thanks Martin.
Just brilliant. This tune is so original, i'd never heard anything like it before and never since. I think Galway really cut loose on this one, and it's not to everyones tastes, but if you 'get it' then it's on another level. If you've never heard the whole thing, do yourself a favour and give it the full 10 minutes.
Just found this on an audio cassette still in my old personal stereo, when i was looking through my attic. Slapped new battery's in and BOOM, I was back in the day! Still absolutely awesome, a timeless classic.
8:42 - the end is like nails down the blackboard of my soul. absolutely astounding that this man did this on a commodore 64. it couldnt be any plainer that he was a genius
I never had Parallax on the 64, so this isn't very nostalgic for me, instead I can just appreciate one of the best chip tunes ever made. Martin Galway is a genius... while modern game music composers try and make every game sound like a Michael Bay movie, this does the job perfectly in about 7,000 bytes. I'd rather listen to this than most other game soundtracks.
I only realize now these guys were geniuses. Martin Galway, Rob Hubbard, Tim Follin and others who i forgot the names. They were the first musicians I ever listened to. I recorded the tracks on tape to listen on my walkman back in the 80's.
@@johankaewberg9512 We shouldn't exclude the Atari ST chip music guru's from mention either, like Jochen Hippel (Mad Max), Rob Hubbard of course, Anders Nilsen (An Cool) to name just a few... if you like chip music then there is some lovely stuff on the ST, demos, crack compilation menus - not on par with the SID but certainly worth a listen.
This was a huge hit of a game when released and I remember sitting with my mate in his room just listening to how long the tune would last.. I think we got blinded by the raster splits on the title sequence after 10 minutes of Galway sonix and watching those 8 sprites scroll around the screen. :) I'm surprised this hasn't ever been converted to a modern PC/console.
Finest C64 music ever - or at least top 3. I used to record the track "from the air" onto a cassette tape and play it around the house. Terrible fidelity but the brilliance of the music shone through!
Such a hard game, such an amazing song. Still gives me goosebumps to listen to it all these many years later. Love that chippy sound. I can still remember sitting in my basement on the C64 just listening to the song while doing other stuff. Miss those days.
Thanks a lot for this song! I remember loading this game from cassette just to hear this song. For a little boy it was just so epic. And it still is. Just pure greatness.
I got this game back in the day on a ZZap64! magazine cover tape. It was a free game they included on it. Totally weird experience playing this game as there were very little instructions with it. The surreal, haunting soundtrack really set the scene perfectly. Loved the tune that played when you entered a building to to dispatch the scientists.
Thank you.... Just discovered this after reading an interview by Galway on Lemon64.... This could become my all time favourite, move over Ocean Loader....
lol you didn't include track 2! that was simply the best one out of the bunch. i do love the fact that you mentioned me. i find this somewhat funny because i was showing my friend my account and i said just search my name and this came up. :P
A magnificent piece of work. My first experience of Parallax was not on the C64, but on the '100 Most Remembered C64 Tunes' demo on the Amiga. So there you go.
I had no idea Galway has written so many awesome tunes - some of them are my favorites (like this, and Wizball) and I didn't even know who wrote em :D.
This tune and Oceans Loader & Sanxion Loader really amazing considering its from a commodore 64, Galloway & Hubbard where stars of the computer music world.
please Airwulf, dont forget Jeroen Tel!!!!!!!! (music reference f.e.: Turbo Outrun/Commodore64) look at the assembly 2012 video where he plays some of his 8+bit tracks to not name him can just mean that you didnt know him haha
Nice. The beginning reminds me of some tune in the Night/Dawn/Day of the dead movie, can't remember which one of them had that.. or was it some other zombie movie.. :P Well anyways, really cool song, as usual from Galway! Thanks for posting
@therideguide I agree with you to an extent and I was lucky enough to work as a programmer at Ocean but Hubbard is still amazing... In a different way of course.. Galway's tunes are just as hypnotic as you say.
This brings back some pleasant memories. One of the few games that I actually paid for and I remember the day I loaded it up in teh old 1541 drive and typed LOAD"*",8,1 and was totally mesmorized by this awesome tune.
The name of the Game comes of the Parallax Scrolling Method . Means 1 Graphic Layer scrolls faster then the Other .The Interesting thing is ,,THE musik Layers do the same here .So Parallax method is Used TWICE in the game .!!!
I had this as part of one of those great 6-game compilations that were so common with C64. I think the others included Head Over Heels and Ace of Aces. Unfortunately, the cassette for Parallax never worked!
Yup- he was very big back then - and had similar sounds to what a c64 can make. Hubbard and a lot of the others too have some tracks that sound like JMJ, Glass, Pink Floyd etc.
NES had all kinds of music tracks that rocked (Battle Toads, Streetfighter 2010, every Mario game ever made). I don't know why you like the sound of this one, it lacks musical skill, not to mention a drumbeat. The trick to fitting this inside a game is repetition. The first minute takes a half byte since it's just 8 notes repeating. By minute 2 another layer of repetitious noise is overlayed. I'm not here to flog an inferior system, but we used to rock out on N64 tunes. They had drumbeats and keyboard solos and the odd synthesized guitar riffs. Much higher quality on the same 64K
Hmm.. got mixed up a bit. NES had more than 64K of memory! N64 was a 64 bit processor. Now I'm curious how many bits were in the C64 processor and how much storage was in the 8 bit NES.
Milky Way Laniakea Superclusterite at the time 64 was more meant as 64K memory not at the number of bits, plus N64 is from 1995 while c64 is from 1982, at the etime it was a cutting edge machine (only Atari computers performed better on graphics, less on sound)
I still remember back in the day, when I was fascinated by the music of that game, the game itself not so much, because I sucked at playing it... :-D We had some magazines back then in germany "happy computer" and "c64er" and I remember reading in one othe them reviewing the game, they complained about the annoying intro music... I guess they never listened into it for more then 40 seconds... The intro music is the best music so far I heard on the C64er... sorry Chris H. :-D
@therideguide G and H are both geniouses in their field. I just love this fuckin era and Im blessed that I got to witness all this great music. I wish this is the tune they play in my funeral.
I remember, loading this game and just let the music play in the background, while playing with star wars toys on the floor :)
haha, i did the same thing. i also used star wars music while i played with the toys too.
i fucked girls.

I still listen to C64 tunes today
Still listening in 2024!
End of this song = SID collapsing under its own awesomeness.
Aptly put. Like some avantgarde digital 8bit shoegaze
🤘😂👍
This song ascends into the category of religious experience or similar. It's not that great musically, but it's a universe in itself!
I think that some games in its time where really religious experience..
For real, song definitely is trippy but even transcends that label, truly is epic and spiritual sounding
Have you ever listened to this on WEED?
It's one of a kind from it's time that stands on its own its own three feet, today, tomorrow and the day after that. Thank you for uploading xx
What a sound. Still gives me goosebumps
My dad used to play this tune. Pure nostalgia 😢❤️

By any standard, this is a sublime bit of electronica
A classic

I used to make audio cassettes from my favourite c64 music classics 👍.

When life seems too complicated and overwhelming, I play starting at 8:43 and all life makes sense...
Excellent idea Spock.
Amazing what the Sid could do. Most of us are adults now and the C64 still impresses us.
Wanna hear something cool? - Martin freaking Galway is the lead composer on Chris Roberts new game Star Citizen! :p

used to just let myself get hipnotised to this, no wonder I had odd dreams lol, for me this was the most amazing soundtrack on C64
This is one of my favourite pieces of Commodore 64 music and it still stands up well now. Brilliant!
Heard it for the first time: Masterpiece
I pop back every few weeks for a listen of this. It's not only a great Commodore 64 piece of music, it's a great piece of music full stop!

I had my first c64 in 1983 I was 16 years old, always was extremely appreciative with the SID sound-chip MSX & Zx Spectrum did NOT have!
11 min of greatness!
Holy pulse width modulation Batman
I remember playing this game when I was about 7 or so.. I used to be amazed by the music.. still am.... its like early psy-trance

I think there's nothing better on the C64 than this. It's really astounding.
Martin Galway the man. I love his every song he did for great C=64. This masterpiece is my fav one. Hail the King,

added this to my playlist containing the best C64-songs many month ago and still like to play it again and again. old times. PLS/Plasma.
Childhood dreams. After receiving a new batch of games, trying them out all night long and listen to all the loaders and watching all the intros.
I was too young to be able to play this game with any success, but I'd load this up just for this music and dance like a lunatic
One of my favorite C64 songs and one of my favorite games. Galway for the win!
This is the first song that got me into music, so hypnotic.
Amazing !!!

Martin is the best composer of C64 and Parallax is his masterpiece.
The more and more I listen to this, the deeper it gets stuck in my head.
Epic music from a better world.

Galway, not Galloway
It's amazing how the fact that it's all using just 3 channels never seems to become a problem. There's so much going on at all times
Nice. The beginning reminds me of some tune in the Night/Dawn/Day of the dead movie, can't remember which one of them had that.. or was it some other zombie movie.. :P Well anyways, really cool song, as usual from Galway! Thanks for posting
This is 11 minutes of pure awesome

@therideguide I agree with you to an extent and I was lucky enough to work as a programmer at Ocean but Hubbard is still amazing... In a different way of course.. Galway's tunes are just as hypnotic as you say.
A simpler time. Martin composed everything with guitar, Rob with a keyboard.
@SimoWill75 I think the end is amazing! Then again, the whole tune is outstanding, so it's just a shame it's not on youtube in its entirety... :)
Never played a C64. But man I know what great music is. It's this.

Whoa, excellent track, quite impressive. Why weren't there epic 10 minutes tracks like this on the NES (for example)?
C_Clop In my opinion the 64 although lacked in resources compared to the NES, had so much more character.
