    Wow, brilliant to see the chain moving under neath. Excuse my ignorance, but what does the snubber? Do to the anchor chain? Brilliant video again, looking forward to the next one 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🥃

    • @AwanuiNZ
      @AwanuiNZ  4 месяца назад +1

      The snubber takes all the load off the windlass and puts it onto the cleats through lines from a chain hitch which you attach and lower down into the water. Once the lines take the load you can release some chain so one there is no tension and two when the boat moves up and down, sideways or takes the load of the wind the windlass is not taking all that pressure through the chain. Also by setting the snubber a little deeper it most importantly lowers the angle of the chain relative to the sea floor which absolutely helps hold the boat tight. By letting out more chain below the snubber attachment point on the chain supposedly you get more cushioning. Less noise through the night as well. Our cabin is at the bow and I like to know if the wind has picked up….we leave the Nordhavn flag flying on the bow which makes a slapping noise when it gets windy….always wakes me up which is good.

    Maybe a stand alone Garmin, Raymarine, or Simrad chart plotter with built-in antenna? Then you can purchase the charts for the areas you need. We've got a removable one for our weekender, that we remove when we leave the boat. I even took it to the Caribbean when I sailed down with a friend for 5 months.

    Hello Captain, from Rochester, MN USA.
    Your anchoring technique is flawless. From scouting it out (slow is pro), to setting the anchor to deploying the snubbers , perfect. You want all the strain on the snubbers, not the chain. That is the whole point. Take the strain on substantial cleats, not your capstan. 10:1 scope in that type of anchorage seems a little much, but hey it’s your boat and you must have learned the hard way.
    GPS loss of signal. Interesting. As I pilot, I have experienced GPS loss of signal a few times. I’m surprised you haven’t. In a plane, it’s typically one of two things. Loss of the signal somewhere between the antenna and the plotter (or primary display). It’s typically at either end. The connection from the antenna to the cable or the connection from the cable to the plotter. Vibration and moisture are the culprits. Or the actual GPS signal is down. Happens with monotonous regularity on the approach in to Midway or O’Hare, when you fly over a certain ex presidents house, they block the signal. Never considered the Russians playing games. Would not put is past them. Your thinking is right though. For your longer off shore passages, an independent handheld device is a must. Iridium, Starlink or similar a great idea. Autopilot in my plane automatically reverts to heading mode . It sounds like yours did that as well on Awanui. Which brings us to DR navigation. Pretty sure you took your PPL with paper charts on your lap. You need a small scale chart. Say 1:1,200,000. And yes, you mark your progress at hourly or bi - hourly intervals. If no GPS, you do indeed use course and speed. Add wind speed and direction to guess at drift. There are recommend symbols to use for this. I’m sure there are RUclips videos on it. With your curious mind and obvious intellect, you may even teach yourself celestial navigation. Noon sights in the middle of nowhere are very rewarding.
    Love following your videos. You and Fiona have come so far with your boating skills.
    Did the new fuse do the trick for your solar power set-up?
    It will be interesting to see how much you miss the boat after a prolonged time in Aotearoa. I follow some sailors who shipped their catamaran from the far East where it was built, to the Med. They missed their boat after a while , to their surprise somewhat. Ditto for the couple who keeps their boat on the dry in the Caribbean somewhere while they live in their cabin in Montana during Hurricane season. Same thing. After the initial jitters of launching and getting all the systems working again, they missed it. There is a pace to being on a boat, just the two of you that’s hard to duplicate elsewhere.
    Sorry for the long post. Love your videos.

    Hi Mark& Fiona, informative and entertaining video, greatly enjoyed. Please do not leave viewers hanging -- did you reset the nav system? Did that cure the wobblies? Did the new fuse work fine to restart the solar power?
    It must be nerve-wracking to enter a brand new island. Do you have prior information that gives you assurance there will be somewhere to anchor? Can't imagine what you would do if the harbor was completely packed and the sea state was rough all around the island.

    • @AwanuiNZ
      @AwanuiNZ  4 месяца назад +1

      Nav system reset and did not happen again on 20hr transit to Tunisia. Fuse failed and now have a new system made for me from the controller to the busses. You can normally ring but in the end there should always be somewhere to “squeeze” in. Worst come to worst you would have to trudge around until something became available.

    Mark did you ever go to the satellite page to see if the Garmin could see any satellites? It’s always a pain when you have intermittent problems. It would be worth checking the antenna and connection. On my boat I ended up with a replacement simrad unit when it became clear there was an intermittent fault in the internal GPS antenna. I’m assuming you have an external one?

    Mark you mentioned the Water maker is great which they are. The water is the best tasting but it reminded me of something and yourselves and your viewers will think this is Left Field, BUT.... since there is no flouride in the water made by the Watermaker, I suggest you pick up some flouride pills from the chemist as you are going to be years without flouride in your water and tooth paste alone wont cut it. Last thing you need is tooth problems. Don't want to see you coming home toothless and gumming your meals. LOL.Cheers.

  • @davedavids9619

    Are you using the internal GPS of the track plotter or do you have an external GPS connected ? We have Raymarine Axiom's, but the internal GPS is not too good, also loses signal often. So we have added 2 external GPS's as well, which are now used as primary source of GPS, plus we have the GPS of the radio, the tablet and our back up plotter (SIMRAD).
    While underway we have the Axiom as primary plotter, the SIMRAD as back up and then the tablet as back up of the back up. Bit over the top, but we have also run into situations like you have, where all of a sudden there is loss of signal or the plotter just goes beserk.
    With regard to that, are you planning on making longer blue water crossings ? Or do you always want to stay coastal ? If you plan blue blue ops you may want to think about a back up autopilot. If your autopilot fails while you are hundreds of miles off shore you won't be a happy camper.
    As for the anchoring, nothing wrong with the snubber, is set well. In a storm we actually set a second snubber as a back up.
    Understand you want to continue in winter time, which in itself is not impossible, but be aware of Southern Storms. They are frequent in this period of year and the locals have a saying: 'Southern winds sink ships'. Especially the region of Tunesia, Gibraltar, Genova (basically Western Med) can be horrendous, so take your time crossing that part.
    The area of Malaga is nice, but the area of Cadiz, Jerez de la Frontera and Seville is absolutely beautiful. You can actually go with the boat all the way up to Seville and Seville has great weather in winter time. The city itself is one of the most beautiful in Europe, an absolute must see. While you are in Southern Spain I would advise to rent a car and drive over to Granada to take a look at the Alhambra. In winter time it is not too busy and you will be able to get tickets. In summer time that is next to impossible. If you have more time take the car all the way up to Toledo, close to Madrid. Is about a 8 hour drive, but Toledo is also a must see city.
    Anyway, enjoy your stay at home, we hope you will post videos of this blossom valley (found a few earlier ones), that is all new for us.

    I don't know what your Radar range is but you can get your paper chart out and take bearings on your Radar from Land Marks. I'm sure I am preaching to the Converted as Mark will know what I'm talking about as he is used to travelling at 11 miles per minute in his plane and navigating with only a small chart on his knee and he will know how to do dead reckoning. Eh Mark? LOL

    • @AwanuiNZ
      @AwanuiNZ  4 месяца назад

      Well in the a/c no charts on the knee anymore it’s all electronic. Can did them out if needed but basically electronics so reliable now it’s simply not an issue. At 6kts there is so much time to seek other options or even make the decision to turn back if a better option. There is so much fuel on board and major crossings other than the Pacific will see you hit something eventually and that is if you lost all electronic capability. For big oceans charts necessary.

    We have been following you from the very beginning. We keep hoping you will upgrade your microphones because you are quite often hard to understand. Even the closed captions can’t understand you.

    Mark. Three metres of water and 35 metres of chain out? Jeez you will be carving arcs all around the bay if the wind comes up and wiping out everyone within 30 metres! .I think that is hilarious but I doubt your neighbors will think so as you careen around the Bay causing carnage as you sleep blissfully below. LOL. By the way. Why waste your time using a snubber if the conditions are calm? No point and it will achieve nothing. Try anchoring without one in anything up to 10 to 15 knots. You wont notice any difference. Snubbers are only designed to take the shock loading off the bow roller or winch or bollard, if the hull is pitching up and down significantly in a head wind and swell. Otherwise they are pointless.

      Ok so very aware of that and always check we will clear current boats in anchorage with that amount of chain out. Always prepared to pull some in. The wind that day got up over 20kts and was swinging quite a bit….easily cleared the other boats

    I pray you don't return from your trip home to NZ to find Awanui NZ missing. I lived in Algiers Algeria. Not a good neighborhood. I would have spent a little more money and left the boat in a much safer place than Tunisia. Just my thoughts. Be Safe

      It’s weird as so many people kind of look at you sideways when suggesting the boat stay in Tunisia. Having spent time in North Africa I was alert to the possibility of not being happy with our decision. Three things helped…the insurance company was happy and they are not easy to please, light loading on insurance as well. Secondly we had met other mariners who had spent time in Monastir and they said it was fine and were going back. Finally I figured we would get a feel for the place and if it was not right we did have time. We were happy. Have a now friend there who is checking on Awanui NZ every couple of days. Mariners are reporting in also.

    ALWAYS AIWAYS, plan your journey on a paper chart before you set sail, just in case !,

      @AwanuiNZ  4 месяца назад

      Mmmm…sorry just not sure that is necessary these days. As long as you have a back up I feel spending thousands of dollars on charts is just not needed. Where I do agree is if you are heading to a remote island that you must find.

      @AwanuiNZ Commercial ship's no longer have to carry paper charts as long as they have two independent systems as you stated. In fact paper charts are no longer published for Commercial use. Only few military still use paper charts, usually in submarines. Most navy surface vessels now only use electronic charts. I agree get a small system independent of your boats equipment to use as back up if you have another GPS blunder. Just wandering was GPS signal lost due to a fault onboard or from input signals sent from GPS Satellites. When I was sailing around in war areas the USA used to block the GPS signals in certain areas. They also used to block out radar signals so you could not see their military vessels on the radar. I have heard that Russia is playing around with the GPS signals and have read some stories of ship's and aircraft losing GPS signals.

      @RichieKeane yes I am sure, as well as a few other Navies. Their paper charts are published and kept updated by their naval hydrographic department. Navy ships have plenty navigational officers on the bridge team to simultaneously operate electronic charts and at same time use paper charts for navigation. It also allows the junior officers to gain navigational skills onboard a ship using paper charts techniques rather than just classroom training.
