- In today's video I have Lee Abraham join me with his latest purchase, a Strymon Riverside Overdrive pedal.
The Strymon Riverside is slightly different from a lot of other drive pedals as it has a JFET input with a digital drive circuit, and I think this pedal sounds FANTASTIC!
Here is what Strymon says about the Riverside.
Riverside’s cascading gain stages create harmonically rich tones that are immensely musical and natural-from silky clean overdrive to colossal distortion, and all points between. Our analog JFET front-end ensures that Riverside responds to your guitar with uncompromised dynamics and feel. The precision crafted DSP generates dynamic complexity and pleasing harmonics at every stage, letting your amp shine at any gain level. Riverside takes your amp to places you never knew it could go.
The Studio Rats are core band members Paul Drew on guitar/production/mixing, drummer James Ivey and Dan Hawkins on bass. They collaborate with singers and musicians to produce radio-ready songs.
I’m a bit late to the party, but I recently picked up a Riverside and I’m loving it.
So natural and amp-like. Cleans up beautifully. Couldn’t ask for more.
Great demo, great pedal.
The Riverside is my favorite drive pedal. I can cover a heck of a lot of sonic ground with it and it feels and sounds great. I run it in front of my Iridium for studio recording.
Same here, also on stage.
@@JeeWeeDonkersI’m looking for a good video example of that exact setup. Any pointers?
same here!@@CalebMcLellan
WOW! outstanding drive. I'm building a new board with my ToneX and GigRig so this is next purchase. Thanks
I've had my Riverside for a couple of years now and I have it in my living room set-up and put it in front of my Princeton 68 RI and it work to create any level of drive sound from a high gain amp type distortion to a low gain overdrive and even pretty clean sound. I leave the amp on about 4.5 and use the Riverside to control the volume and the EQ and use a delay after that and use the amp reverb. Very versatile.
I own the Riverside and have it on my peddle board for a couple years. Still finding different tone flavors, all good.
Someone let Lee know that he (and Paul) partially inspired me to give this pedal a shot. I seem to be about 5-7 years behind the current tech, but at least I'm in good company with Lee and co.!
Excellent video and great performance! The Riverside sounds fantastic and it’s a great versatile overdrive tool with so many killer tones and smart usable features that you can enjoy. I really love that it has his on personality and character!
Very interesting option for anyone who is interested in something different but good.
PS: The noise gate built in, the boost switch and the buffer mode for expression or volume pedal are awesome features!
No offence to James, but I love when Lee and Paul sit together reviewing guitar gear, there are no egos, just connecting and enjoying some moments together. And especially, when the gear is more affordable 😊. Great video guys, loved it.
Cheers as always Gaza
That setup sounds great
I have it and it is absolutely fabulous ! Definitely a keeper 👍🏼
Hell. Yes. I've had the Riverside for about 2 years and I don't think it will leave my board. The BE OD Deluxe made me consider it for a moment, but they're very different. Keeping both!
Also, love your channel dudes.
Nice playing Sir😎🎸🤟👑
My head was blone off, great video!
Because of you guys I had to go out and buy me one of these Riversides...Thanks LOL !
Fantastic demo.
The one thing that's not mentioned is the built in noise suppressor/gate in both this and the Riverside which is amazing and very easy to set. It makes both pedals super quiet and live, for me, a joy with the high gain settings. Definitely not to be underestimated here.
I’ve had the Strymon Sunset for a few years now which emulates different od’s distortions and boosts and it’s great. Never left my board! Strymon don’t get enough credit for the drive pedals that they’ve created 👍
It's funny to hear you lamenting that people come over to your house with new gear and they make you spend money, because you come over to my house via RUclips and do pretty much the same thing.
Lol. Exactly. Paul I’ll be sending you my bill. I just need your address. 😉 just kidding mate. I really enjoy your channel.
😂😂😂😂
😂
I did the same thing... I used the Riverside as my pedal platform amp-in-a-box style pedal, paired with the tc electronic impulse loaded with custom made IR. Great stuff! With a midi controller I can program some interesting tones, from squeeky clean to muff style distortion. Amazing value for money. It stands in also as a clean boost and a noise gate.
I have the Riverside i stack the Sunset into it and it does take some tweaking to dial both pedals in but like anything guitar related it takes times and patience to get it right but these strymon guys are doing an excellent job. Great videos guys
doing the same. I use them as the drives with the boss ms3 into 2 roland blues cubes. highly recommended.
If u can't afford the Tonex, pair up the Riverside with the NuX Amp Academy. That is my actual setup. As for my "wet" effects (modulations, delays, reverbs, compressions, wah, etc...), i have my Boss MS3 connected to the NuX Amp Academy's effect's loop. The Boss MS3 also acts as my MIDI switcher for my Riverside, to recall any of the 16 presets that i have saved in the Riverside (anything from edge of break up right up to really high gain & with anything in between). As for the NuX Amp Academy, i use mostly the Fender Twin Reverb with it's matching IR, as the main amp tone (so, i don't have to rely on any given backline amps...i just use the backline guitar amp's effect's Return). I then send the 1/4" output of the Amp Academy (with the Cab IR bypassed) with the Riverside sound (or without) & the "wet" fx from the Boss MS3, into a guitar amp's effect's Return while the Amp Academy's built-in DI out (XLR connector) WITH the Cab IR, sent to FOH or for recording without having to mic up the actual physical amp's speaker cab....
Fantastic video fella's - really enjoyed that! 🎸
Cheers Matt
The ferrets out the bag folks. Wicked pedal
Paul, you should now try Strymon’s Sunset dual overdrive and the comp/boost Compadre. Would love to hear your thoughts on those, too!
Watched a bunch of review videos on the Riverside and Sunset by Strymon. Decided 2 channels was more useful to me. For digital equipment they both sound very whole toned and musical. I still would like to get an Okko Twinsonic Mk2 eventually. I love dual overdrive pedals. Thank you for the video.
Excellent and entertaining demo, nice to compare it with the Sunset which came out around the same time
It took me a while to understand and dial in my Riverside, but once I understood it it’s fantastic.
Wait till you try the Compadre ;-)
Have this. It’s really a great pedal. Did I miss the left button where you can save your favorite setting?
They mention the pedal and the IR but apparently not the pretty obvious reverb and delay that's been applied. Like are we hearing this straight off the TC unit, or what else is involved? There's definitely more than just the 2 pedals featured. Be nice to know the entire signal chain.
Great tones and great video. Just a couple of tone aficionados discussing great guitar tone.
I use my Tonex similarly to what you describe, Paul. Compressor = Drive = Tonex= Delays/Rev = FOH/IEMs.
I would love for a company to develop hardware that could run VST3 plugins of all sorts. Its great running Valhalla Supermassive after the Tonex plugin. Would be great to put that on my pedalboard.
This pedal sounds very convincing! What amp and what cab model did you use in the Tonex?
Hi Paul,
Do you think that combination is better than Boss IR200?
I thought itvwas one if your fav gear.🤔
My budget can not change mindbso quickly 😅
What a great pedal this is! Hope you feel good in your new home, Paul. Are you planning to test the new Marshall pedals?
There is something unique about your guitar tone, and i mean that in a good way. The mid frequencies are quite pronounced even if you play single coil pickups - how do you do that?
It is called Custom Shop 😅
I'd love to see this side by side with the Boss OD200.
With the Tone X why use drive pedals, when you can used a captured cranked Amp? Then you can just cycle through its presets changing the gain stages as needed. PS I have used the River Side Drive to push my Clean single Channel Amps and separately a Tone X into the return of an Amp Head and Cab for additional options.
A digital model just like plugins etc. I want to hate it, but it always sounds pretty good in videos I have seen. Built in noise gate too. Digital can be all good if the analog part of the unit feeding those ones and zeros is top-notch. My Belle Epoch Deluxe echo pedal is evidence of that. It makes stuff sound so good. Folks say that delay pedal colours the sound too much though. Those folks probably would not like an actual Echoplex either. They colour the tone too.
This pedal uses 32bit floating point calculations meaning the results are very close to analogue.
You need to check out the Kernom ridge. It’s a killer pedal !!
Big money day Paul!
does the sustain cut if the drive is on half? That's what most digital drive pedals fall.
Something slightly fizzy on top that wrecks it for me but totally useable for average gig. Was that just the IR or was there a delay?
It's probably just RUclips .
Don’t all digital DSP based effects pedals and amps emulate various cabs, how is an IR different?
if you have to choose between the riverside or the duelist, What would be your first option?
It really depends on what amp it’s going into. I swap between the two.
Don’t forget about the boost function (3channel?) and built in noise gate
@studiorats just to make sure, this pedal can work as an amp to support a cabinet for live performances?
No, this pedal is a pre-amp type of pedal (there is no onboard power amp). U can use this pedal to go direct into the front of a guitar amp, in which this pedal acts just like any drive pedal, or, u can place the Riverside in a guitar amp's effect's Return (using the guitar amp's power amp section & bypassing the guitar amp's preamp section), in which case the Riverside will act as your preamp. With a MIDI switcher or a loop switcher which has MIDI out, u can save up to 300 presets on the Riverside & easily recall any of the 300 presets from the loop switcher/MIDI switcher (if u ever use up all the 300 presets, which i doubt....the most presets that i have saved on my Riverside are currently in total, 16 presets...). This is one digital drive pedal that don't sound digital but sounds more like & feels like an analog drive/preamp pedal but with MIDI capabilities. To have the MIDI & presets capabilities, u would need to configure it via it's USB connector which is hidden in the pedal! U would have to open up the Riverside's casing to access the USB connector...a bit cumbersome but well worth it & u only need to do it once only. Btw, my Riverside's presets' recall is via my Boss MS3 (which apart of sending Preset Changes to the Riverside, the Boss MS3 gives me all the "wet" effects. Sorry for the long reply....
Along those lines, the Source Audio L.A. Lady is very versatile. The TPS boys said "I don't want to say it's a great sounding Digital drive pedal, it's just a great sounding drive pedal". I've yet to try the Sunset or Riverside but I've always wanted to.
I have the L.A Lady and the Riverside. And I bought a used sunset. It’s a problem re buying pedals. It’s called I can’t stop.
@@Utube-s8m For those three, how would rank them, in your order of preference and why?
Least Lolly? I thought cool, a decent cheap drive pedal to put through my boss kat50. To be shown something that costs...a boss kat50. Cheers. Nice pedal though...
Had it before and thought it was garbage maybe I have bad ears but I feel like strymon lost me on this pedal but own so many others
Tonex can capture it. Just saying.
All your drive demos sound the same mate! Sorry! I don't know if it's what you do in post production, but any hard clipping pedal you demo sounds the same to me!
I think that’s because we often tend to dial in our favourite sound in a drive pedal, which ends up being roughly the same sound, with perhaps a few harmonic / EQ nuances attributable to the new/latest pedal. I’ve been guilty of this - I’m not going to dial in a sound a don’t like just to show the differences between two pedals, and I have a sound in my head that I’m always looking (listening) for. To name but two, Shawn Tubbs and Sasha Ivantic so the same thing - always lovely but generally the same sound.
FYI… pedal is analog… just digitally controlled…
Not exactly. All the distortion is DSP. There are no analog clipping components. The only analog part is the front end. So it's not digitally controlled analog. It's an analog clean initial gain stage fed into a DSP drive processor.
@@pCeLobster1st gain stage, JFET is all analog, after 9 o’clock the 2nd stage kicks in the 12 and 3 those are digital.
Dude looks like Bill Burr 😆
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
