I love the Riverside. It knocked out of my pedal-board 3 pedals, a full-range OD, a mid-humped greenish pedal and a clean boost, it has a great buffer and an aggressive noise gate. Beside, I use it as amp-in-a-box or pre-amp type pedal and couple with a nice IR loader (TC Electronic Impulse) I have an amp-less rig which is versatile enough to cover a lot of ground.
Ahw riverside!!! I own both. The riverside is much more versattile, funny that people think otherwise. The 3 band eq is insanely flexible, high and low gain are also different distortions. Riveside is so much better on its own. I love it also as preamp, it absolutely shines in front of an iridium. Sunset hard is insane tho also can you match em? No. Sunset is very mid focused, also the thing is, riverside and all the synset drives just have very different gain structures. They beahve different. Even if you kinda match them, if you change the gain on iridium, they again wont be similar. The riverside is truly like a preamp, a lot smoother in any situation, good for standalone. Sunset is crunchier and has a more broke up gain structure on the hard clippers and and a very dirty, sometimes unpleasing gain character, ge and texas and even 2 stage are truly overdrives, they sound dirty, roughe, push your mids but not in a smooth and pleasing way like riverside. True overdrives. Let you stand out. Both sound extremely good into riverside. and the most interesting thing in front of RS are sunsets boosts. Especially treble. Very versatile, also for pushing riverside. Sunset can push a lot better, as sunset is much louder so it can break up other stuff better. also sunset hard has a lot more gain than riverside. which is funny cause peiple think vice versa I use them in stereo, so i split my signal go L to riverside and R into sunset, then continues in a stereo rig. I tried to match them in that situation. No chance. I could never get a mono kind of sound. Always felt 3D.
Great video! I have a Riverside and i really love it! Immaculate pristine clean sound. Powerful 3 band eq section and high gain. Impressive features! Very unique voice, character and personality. You can't compare it with an a hundred per cent analog drive. The Riverside is a total different beast but it really shines on his own world.
I use the Riverside as an EQ pedal and sometimes a bit of gain and the Sunset as my main gain. If you have a MIDI controller, this combo along with a Iridium is incredibly versatile and the best sounds I've ever gotten live
@@ROKZLEON so I went to Jimis Music Store and they only got in stock the new Midnight Edition of both these pedals how lucky was that, my entire board bare MXR Phase 95 is black 🖤 unreal pedals.
Thanks for the video and great information!!!I got the Riverside and I really love it so much !!!!It’s a fantastic inspiring overdrive pedal!!!Killer tones!!!!!
I've tried both the sunset and Riverside. The Riverside is a great pedal, however, it wasnt really for me. As far as from EOB (edge of breakup) tone to first stage goes, between the two, the riverside has it down far better than the sunset could ofc IMHO. HOWEVERRRRR, if you already have a preamp style pedal you love and want more overdriven tones (I do cause i love my Jackson Audio Prism) and you want more of the overdrive category with different flavors of overdrives, WITHOUT THE HASSLE OF BUYING A BAJILLION OVERDRIVES, I'd say go with the Sunset. Strymon is known as a boutique company for a reason. Also, the control layout is failry simple and easy to understand. For me, I played the Sunset last year at a convention and HOLY CRAP. It was EXACTLY EVERYTHING I was searching for in an overdrive pedal. The two sides stacked together sound absolutely incredible, lush, full, and can cut through a mix very well. For me, that was the 2 stage on the B side and the Ge on the A side. People may say the Sunset has a lot of mids, but personally as a guitar player, I need a good amount of mids to poke out and be heard. A lot of players also use mid focused pedals too like a klon, tube screamer, etc. Again, all personal preference, and this was my 2 cents. Cheers 🍻
@ROKZLEON Also, JIC if anyone wants to know how I achieved the tone I wanted out of the Sunset, I put the Ge (A Side) more towards the transparent side with drive anywhere between 8-9, level at just past unity, and tone around 1-1:30. On the 2 stage (B side) I had the 2 stage also at unity level, with drive at closer to 10:30-12, and Tone a little bit darker to sound more natural to my ear. When stacking I've put Side B going into Side A so it can push my already high gain with more Volume. If you switch it the other way, it doesn't really give you more volume for solo, it just adds more compression and distortion. I loved what you set on the Sunset though! I'll have to play around with it a little more myself haha
I picked a third option: Katana 50 MkII. Loaded the ‘sneaky’ amps, chose the jumpered Plexi, put a Katana TubeScreamer in front, and done. The whole amp cost less than either of those pedals
Whenever I hear the Riverside played, it always seems like the guitarist is struggling a bit. Is the feel of it ok? Good tones are great, but if they aren't comfortable then it's only a performance tool.
I’ve been using the Riverside exclusively in church for a few months and, personally, it feels like it’s really easy to get good, comfortable sounds. The heavier drive sounds have that ‘buttery’ feel to them.

It's a cool drive for sure!

Thanks for the comment. I still need to try the Strymon with midi. I think that would open up some good options.
Great video thank you, I'm buying both. Subscribed
Right on!!

Was gona get sunset. Saw this Brill video and now I'm getting riverside
Let me know how it goes!
Damn!!! Everyone says Riverside, but my ears like the Sunset. Wonder if it's all in the feel. I'm going to have to try both before I buy
Go with your ears!!! The Sunset is a great pedal too. It's all in what you're looking to use the pedal for. ✌🏻
I feel like the Riverside is just easier to set. I Like the Sunset, but I Love the Riverside
Right on man!
sunset must have pedal
It's a good one!

Haha! Glad you found your tone!!!
Fantastic video!
Lowest to highest gain ... which one would you place first in the effects chain? Riverside first or Sunset first?
Many thanks!
Thanks for the question! I'd place the Sunset before the Riverside since I use the Riverside as a preamp pedal.
@@ROKZLEON Thank you very much for solving my question.
Congratulations on your channel.

I totally agree. You can get easily so many killer guitar tones with the Riverside.@@msterling45
