- Strymon Sunset vs Strymon Riverside (These Things Are Great!)
But which is better?
I've had the Sunset for a while, and recently got the Riverside. Strymon are known for making great pedals, and these two are no exception. I really like them both. But which one is better? That's what I aim to find out today.
These two pedals are a bit different. The Sunset is a bit more diverse. But we all know that doesn't necessarily mean it's better. It has to sound the part, and that's what I'm looking at today. The differences between the pedals, and which sounds better.
Check it out, and hope you enjoy as the Strymons battle it out!

Been listening to a lot of comparisons between these two pedals and have to say, time and time again I prefer the Riverside. It just sounds warmer and thicker to my ears. Obviously, its all a matter of taste and I don't think you can go wrong with either one but yes, the Sunset definitely has more options. I already own several Strymons... Flint, El Cap, and Deco... all excellent sounding pedals.
Yeah, Strymon makes some great stuff.
Both sound absolutely brilliant so I'm going to go for the sunset because of the name and colour ❤
Me too
Thank you for another great review!
Glad you enjoyed it!
WTF?! Can't believe it managed to replace the Fender YJM, this is the most important event through the entire timeline of human history, Elmo, congrats!
Haha :D
F@$k!!!! I still don't know which one to get. Thanks a lot for more confusion. Seriously, great demo. Thanks. Think I'm aiming towards the Riverside.
Always glad to confuse :D
Salute Elmo, fantastic playing my friend you are my favourite guitar, pedal reviewer ......the problem is now l have to buy the f...ing riverside !*$?!
Haha :D Sorry :D
Sold for the riverside! Both great pedals, thanks for the comparison. Haven’t heard one bad RUclips sound from the riverside and think the features are fantastic and useful.
Yep. It's great :)
Riverside is such an inspiring pedal…I easily understand what I want from my tone now when I am using it and that’s priceless!!!!!magic killer overdrive!!!!
Great videos Elmo. I've just recently come across your channel and am now a subscriber. Your playing is fantastic. Question. For mo' money, you can get a TRS expression pedal which both the Sunset and Riverside accept. Have you played with this at all? If so what are your thoughts? Thanks.
Thanks! Haven't tried that, no. Might be something to look into.
Great demo!!
Thanks!
Pleasure to listen to. Thanks Elmo
And thank you :)
Both great of course....riverside for me probably!
Cool bananas :)
I’d like to see the Sunset vs the Keeley D&M. I own the D&M but will be getting a Sunset.
The Keeley looks like an interesting pedal.
I bought the Sunset and love it. Both very cool pedals.
Next time with humbuckers please! Thanks! Looking to replace my Bogner La Grange..
Seems there's a clue in the names. Sunset sounds like California and Riverside sounds like the swamp: Steve Satriani Gilbert or the Allman ZZ Lynyrd Brothers.
Hello from New York...Good video bro..
Thanks :)
ONE OF THE BEST GUITARISTS AND DEMO'S ELMO rocks out and bringing the goods
Thanks 😊
I’ve read in one of the comments that you use the timeline for delay. just got mine.. What settings for delay do you use in this demo? And thinking of getting the riverside. Seen one used for a good price
Honestly, I don't remember :D I have it programmed, and I can't remember what I did.
Great video Elmo !!!
so which would you recommend? sunset or riverside?
🔝
Both :D The Riverside sounds a bit better to me, but the Sunset is more versatile.
Thank you Elmo,
So... for rock, metal, rock blues, pop... sunset is the answer... on overdrive/ distortion side...
🎸😜
I agree completely with your analysis. Riverside sounds slightly better.
Perhaps consider playing a bit less... just don’t need that many notes to demo the pedals.
:)
I disagree. While I’m far from being a shredder, fast runs and arpeggios can showcase problems with note definition and middle range clarity !
Good Revue , Both Sound Good!
Thanks! Yep. Both are good :)
Can you tell me which one can reach a distortion area with a really clean amp?
Both I'd say.
I have the sunset on my pedalboard for almost two years now and I always play with a clean amp (Roland jazz chorus) and I have been using side A with light crunch for classic rock and side B with a massive amount of distortion and it sounds nasty. I couldn´t be happier with that pedal but... Now Im curious to try the Riverside too and wondering if its worth to have both of them in sync.
I know this is old but what if you stacked two riversides?
Haven't tried.
Riverside seems smoother.
Great reviews! What delays are you using in your demos?
Thanks! These days it's the Strymon Timeline.
I'm curious how well they clean up when roll off the volume knob on your guitar.
Very nicely imo.
hey bro what are you settings for the Riverside to match the
Sorry? Match the what?
@@MrPolevaulter sorry about that it cut me off before I got to put in what I wanted. match to the yngwie pedal from fender. thanks man
@@MrStereophile I forget, since I have it programmed as the favorite sound. I think it was the high gain mode, more treble and middle than bass, no mid from the switch. Pretty much gain and output.
@@MrPolevaulter thanks man !
Thank you, but his "clean" tone is already pretty dirty. Those truly interested in these pedals, go over to the in-depth demos from Strymon. They are properly tested there.
I’m looking to pick up one of these pedals to boost an already dirty amp, so this demo was very useful to me. It’s nice to have different types of demos for different types of uses.
