- Strymon Riverside (A GREAT Overdrive Pedal?)
I've heard very good things of the Riverside. I already own the Sunset by Strymon, which I really like, so I was excited to get my hands on one of these. It's both an analog and digital overdrive (watch the video for a more detailed explanation), and it also features a built in noise gate. Strymon calls it a multistage drive pedal. Cool stuff.
Strymon are known for making some great pedals, so lets hope this is one such pedal. Hope you enjoy!

I got the pedal over a month ago and just learned today that it has 300 presets, now im blown away INCREDIBLE PEDAL!
I cannot believe how often reviewers of this pedal forget to mention, or under-emphasize the MIDI control you get with this pedal. Throw this thing on a Boss ES-5 and now you can have a tsunami of overdrive tones NOT at your fingertips, but under your toes, which is GREAT for gigging.
How do you access the 300 presets? I have not heard anyone mention this before. That would definitely tip me over the edge to buy it.
@@jeffh3409 in the settings get the pdf off of Strymons site. I don’t know why people have no clue about it.
Excellent video, fantastic performance and the pedal is just an awesome overdrive!!!Super inspiring tones!!!👍🏻
Thank you Elmo I enjoyed this video and my Riverside arrived today, you’re video was useful for me to take the decision, nice features on this pedal
Thanks for that review. I bought the pedal and subscribed. 👍
Awesome, thank you!
As a non overdrive pedal guy, even I would give the Riverside a shot. It seemed to sound a bit tighter overall. Great video as always.
Thanks! Yeah, great pedal :)
Hey Elmo, I just wanted to drop by and say thanks for the reviews, you do a GREAT job, keep it up, and stay healthy!
Thanks man! You too :)
You can get an external tap switch for post boost. So with the Favorite, you know have 4 sounds at your feet.
If you have hard time choosing between the strymon and the fender, you can always use the fender as a clean boost into the strymon and have them both!
Or not...
True :D
Nice review Elmo 👍 I all so hav the riverside it’s crazy good pedal.🎸🎶
Thanks! Yep, very good pedal :)
Oh Elmo what a conundrum, I feel for you, it's like your old loved to death teddy being replaced by a new super teddy. A built in noise gate too, that's two pedals being replaced by one, me is going to have to investigate this one. Thanks man.
Yep, something like that :D
This Riverside sounds amazing. Even with extreme eq settings this is usable... hah! all of them sounds good while difference is definetly noticeable. And while I was writing this you said basically the same in the video xD This pedal is something I will aim for! :) Great video, again!
Thanks! Glad to be of help :)
Just bought riverside about last week. Compare to fender YJM overdrive, both directly to marshall amp YJM100. Riverside's sound is more detail. The low control is very nice and not muddy.
Yeah, I've also started using it :)
Hi Elmo, another nice video! If I can make one suggestion though - would be nice to put a text over which pedal you're playing at the moment - it is really hard to follow otherwise.
Good tip. Cheers!
Both pedals, each going to a separate amps ... for fun times. Thanks Elmo for sharing your investigations.
:D
Greetings Elmo, always true man thank you very much...
And thank you :)
Love the Sugarfoot Rag lick at 8:55 mark!!! How many people noticed that?!?!
Cheers :)
Do you think the noise gate is sufficient to block the 60 Hz hum on a strat with standard (non-noiseless) pickups, especially as you roll the volume off?
I'm unsure. The pickups I have are noiseless, so I don't have that problem. The gate is fairly good though, so you can try it, and sell it on if it doesn't work.
Like your reviews, but this time you've left me undecided....
They are so close, with that noise gate and varieties of EQing in but more expansive or the slightly warmer sound i prefer and less expansive?? I don't know...... Both???
Aaah you bad boy - lol. Stay well and go on 🤘☮️
Haha :D Both indeed :)
Hey, could you do a video on wah pedal songs please, or how to practice with a wah.
Keep going, you’re great !!!
Interesting idea.
Looks it has lots of features and versatility.
Yep.
Two people who disliked never used overdive pedal.
Haha :D Maybe :)
Great presentation as always... I think that the only worth Strymon pedals are Big Sky and Timeline, Timeline especially ( I know Timmons uses it to get that watery like, liquid, sound)
The Timeline certainly is good (and I'm sure the Big Sky is as well).
and Nightsky and Volante..
The Compadre compressor and the Riverside overdrive are two great Strymon pedals I’ve been using for the last 5 years! 🤟🏻🎸
Nice 90s swedish deathmetal sound with 7string
Cool bananas :)
Elmo👍 it's finally time for a strymon!
👍
Excellent review. I would love to see you review the Friedman BE-OD. My poor wallet as well....
Thanks! I've been thinking of that, but haven't gotten around to it yet. So much gear to try, so little time :D
Elmo, since I can't get a hold of a Fender Malmsteen OD, I've ordered the riverside purely on your recommendation, I hope its worth it :)
Hope you like it :)
Very good pedal !
Absolutely :)
Hi Elmo! I love yjm sound but I hate the noise of full knobs overdrives as 308 , 250, fender ecc ,,I use ns2 but I hate the hiss between power chords .
So I am searching to a yjm sounds “ perfect” overdrive, what do you suggest? Strymon would be the good choice ?
Strymon is good
@@MrPolevaulter thank you ! 👍👍👍
as for me i think YJM ovderdrive pedal sounds a bit better than the strymon but with out the giant pricetag of the strymon even if the YJM hiss a bit you can take care of that with a EHX noise suppressor no biggie
Sadly they don't make the YJM anymore :(
How do you have to configure the Riverside to get it to replicate the JYM pedal? All knobs on 10?
No. I actually don't remember the settings, since I saved that sound as my favorite.
dude, you should make a video from your gear collection... guitars, pedals, amps 😁
I have, but I need to do another one. It's been a while now.
yeah dude, all in one, like a home studio tour :D
Hey, This Guy, I'd love to hear your opinion about the Nutube Screaber by Ibanez and the Timmy by MXR (the tiny one). Thanks
Been thinking of maybe getting the Timmy. Might be a while though.
@@MrPolevaulter This Guy! thanks for answering, man. I'm planning to record some nice hard rock/ heavy/ thrash kinf of thing. And I'm so confused man. I love overdrive more than distortion and I dont know what to get, the NU tube screamer or the Sansamp GT2. Any suggestions?
@@danielblanco2216 Don't know, sorry. Trial and error I guess.
@@MrPolevaulter Hey, This Guy! Guess what I'm gonna do? I have a Joyo firebrand. I'll use the distortion at 9, then I will add a super overdrive to record a guitar. Now, I found that the same brand, Joyo, has this amazing mesa boogie sim "Joyo California". So I'm gonna buy that 5hit and use it too. Let's see how it works
What about Electro Harmonix Hot Wax Dual Overdrive Elmo?
Haven't tried that.
Why using the delay or reverb when demonstrating the pedal. Use a dry sound
how is the inner gate working for you with your 1987x
Great.
Well done Elmo. You should get a pod go on the channel. I recently bought one. It took about a week for my ears to start to adjust from real amp to modeler. At first it sounded really fake and offputting but the more I tweak and make my own presets I'm learning how to dial in tones. I had a hx stomp and sold it because I couldn't get used to it. Plus tweaking tones on the hx stomp isn't as easy as on the pod go. Smaller screen and less knobs.
What's the amp that was under the vox in the beginning of the video? It seems to have disappeared later in the video.
Been thinking of the Pod Go, but haven't gotten around to it.
The amp is a hand built thing, that I think replicates a Dumble. I might be wrong though.
Makes me want to get the EQD Gray Channel off the board and replace it with the Riverside
I hope it's ok but I like to call you Skwisgaar.
🤣
The attack of the picking doesnt seem to be as good as the YM pedal ... I think as far as the picking attack in those fast riffs seems to ice picky and not as Plexi overdriven to my ears
There's that War Face....LOL......I like the Middle Punch to the Pedal. Nice Licks Bro!
Cheers :)
Damn, Elmo. You can play like a bastard. It’s fast, but it’s musical. I wish that I could play half as well. ❤
Thank you very much :)
@@MrPolevaulter You’re great. I’ve been playing for 45 years and I’m generally suspicious of people who play very fast, because they tend not to be musical. But you are very vocal with your playing, if that makes sense. You also have great taste in ODs and distortions.
@@MrPolevaulter I also bought an MXR Super Badass distortion because of your video, and I hadn’t use distortion for 40 years.
@@MaxPower-js1sk Thanks man! 😊
I think there is one obvious difference between the two pedals, at least how they record. The pedals get similar tone, but the riverside lacks the balls/body that the fender pedal has
Great playing but the Riverside sounds horrible
Don't open your mouth or you will suffocate
