Love this pedal. Great dual overdrive with noise gate feature. I agree 100% that the options are more versions of overdrive than distortion. Great demonstration.
When you think about it, its like 6 different drives w distinct characters that you can run one into the other both ways! well worth the money! can't go wrong w Strymon! Don't sleep on the Riverside as well! Strymon, Nux and Flamma are killing the game right now! Its' a golden age for players today. But one thing I notice is some players are just tone deaf, Meaning I've seen some cats with top of the line gear and still sound like shite lol, Digging your contents as always sir!
Hey Taurus. Thx for the comment. Indeed this really is a great all round dirt pedal. It really can cover all the gain sounds you might need. I just wish it had a way of knowing what preset you are on when using MIDI. I’ve not tried any Flamma stuff but indeed NUX and Sonicake are making really great gear. I think the tone deaf thing is all subjective. There’s a lot of big RUclips players out there whose tone I’m not a fan of but they’re not playing music taht I’m a fan of so I wouldn’t be a fair judge of what their going for. Like I really like Dan Steinharts guitar tone cause I like what he plays but I’m not a blues fan so I’m not into Mick’s sound though I’m certain it’s exactly what he is looking for. Know what I mean?
Great review. Glad you didn't put a Fractal at the end of the chain. Also glad you don't do endless noodling showing off riffs and you actually play chords. I have this pedal and Strymon's Riverside. They are expensive but once you get a basic MIDI hookup to save/change programs, you've got a great palette of sounds - and they are so quiet. Plus the favorite switch makes it two channel. I could probably have gone with just the Sunset but the Riverside does delve into harder distortion and '80s metal if I really want to go there. Probably if I was to start a board from scratch I'd get the Sunset and a Zoom G3n and be done. Cheers.
Hey. Thx for the comment. It’s a very impressive sounding pedal. I actually bought it specifically for the midi preset functionality but I found without a screen or a way to tell what preset you were on it just couldn’t really do what I wanted from a functionality POV. I went with the OD200 in the end but this is a brilliant sounding pedal.
@@TheGuitarEffect the OD200 was on my radar as well. I'm sure it's a great pedal too. I use an inexpensive old mini MIDI keyboard that has MIDI DIN output and a button for program change to change patches on the Strymons. Sure would have been nice to have a rotary knob with even 12 patch selections. You'd think for $300 they could have done that. If I was actually still gigging on electric guitar I would definitely go with the OD200... Or the Sansamp 2 or the RJM Overture or the Kernom Ridge.🤪 Really there's no bad choice.
I really like the idea of the Kernan ridge. But it’s huge and expensive. Boss are so reliable. I have a video where I use the OD200 and the IR200 with the HX effects sending MIDI to them. It’s a brilliant solution. It’s called the ultimate Compact pedalboard if you wanna take a look.
@@TheGuitarEffecthow do you like the OD-200 so far? I’m thinking of getting a midi overdrive, although im not sure if that’s even necessary. Maybe I should get the Keeley super AT mod instead
Hey Ivan. How’s it goin! It is very impressive alright. To be honest I am as of yet undecided whether I can afford to keep it!! The next video where I explore the functionality of it will probably be the decider. Thx for the comment mate.
Just in case you haven’t found out what they’re based on yet, Germanium is a Klon, 2-stage is a plexi style amp distortion like the barber direct drive and the Hard is a Rat 👍 This is the only Strymon pedal I’ve bought that’s remained on my board. The others had a “digital” sheen to them which may have been good for others but I couldn’t get on with it. This is great though 😊
Hey Tim. Thx for the comment. I’ve actually just sold mine! I was very impressed with the sound but the functionality just wasn’t there for me. I just picked up the boss OD200. I must admit the sound is very impressive but it does take a bit of tweaking but the functionality is just amazing.
Great video needed an updated version to be sure. Not sure if Strymon has incorporated any new technology into the pedals But it sounded wonderful! Never B sharp , don’t B flat ,always B natural! Cheers!
Hey Patrick. Thx for the comment. It’s a great pedal. Really enjoyed making the vid. But the no display thing means it’s a non runner for me. Just B augmented I say!!!
Hey. Thx for the comment. Yeah. I had a lot of hopes for it. Especially as it was my first strymon pedal. Ultimately I sold it and went for a BOSS OD200 instead. I just couldn’t work with not knowing what preset I was on with the strymon.
Super great review. Though, I'm pretty sure the treble boost is also a bass boost when rolled counter clockwise and that, it's actually neutral when at noon. I own this unit now, and rolling back the tone on the treble mode fattens my tone up considerably. Not trying to be know-it-all, just trying to provide insight. Great review though. You helped me decide to pull the trigger on this. Cheers!
Not trying to know-it-all to prove you wrong, but check out Pete's from Strymon Demo of this and check the manual. It just rolls bass off, and only brings the bass back to flat when rolling all the way counterclockwise. Perhaps you just feel the bass more pronounced if you are coming from the 12:00 position or you have the drive above unity gain?
I'd written this off due to it being so expensive and digital nature of it, but it sounds great. Still pretty expensive though, but maybe if a used deal is to be had...
Hey man. Yeah. €250 used!!!! Mental. It’s actually so expensive I’m probably not gonna keep it. I’m gonna try using it with MIDI and see how I feel about it after that. Also going to compare it to digital drives from the HXEffects and see if and how much better it is.

@@TheGuitarEffect that'd be a really good shout actually. The line6 stuff is surprisingly good and might give this a good run for it's money
Interesting one to find out alright.
Irish Russell Crowe
A geranium is a flower. Germanium is a metalloid.
Thx. I get the Russel Crowe thing A LOT. Cannot see it myself. 🤷♂️
Did I say geranium? 🙄
