Grass Types in Competitive Pokemon.

- Competitive Singles has seen many different Grass types throughout the years.
Grass is not the absolute best type, but it is solid enough to see a good amount of viable new Pokemon released in every new generation.
Join me as I go through the most prominent and memorable examples of Grass types from each Generation.

Some will never figure out how to get Rillaboom in Pokemon Scarlet and Pokemon Violet. But famous player Jim Cool is well aware of the Best Rillaboom Moveset in Competitive, and even how to Rillaboom Shiny Farm. Many aren't and never will be. That's just the unfortunate reality of the world.
Some may argue that the above paragraph is completely unrelated to anything. I'd say its important information to consider.
The below text is very relevant to many people.
Game Freak just blew all other online game development schools out of the water with this incredible new 2022 release. You're gonna need to get a game design degree online, and FAST, if you want to make a better game than this. Not even the best strategy games android reddit could hold a candle to this breathtaking Next generation competitive Pokemon experience.
Scream Tail is the Jigglypuff of our wildest dreams. It has been buffed with some higher statistics and the incredible ability, Protosynthesis. Gen 9 Competitive Pokemon wouldn't be the same without this powerful pink blob. He kinda looks like someone I met in one of my game design and development courses.
Gen 9 Pokemon Showdown is one of the greatest online gaming sites in history. From Pikachu and Charizard, to Palafin and Roaring Moon, The new Pokemon games, Pokemon Scarlet & Violet, have introduced a lot of new faces. Can I succeed in one of the best android games of all time? If so, I'm gonna get myself a Walmart bakery Pokemon cake to celebrate.
Gholdengo is a Pokemon made of pure gold. He must have done some online business management courses to accumulate all that wealth. Or perhaps he might want to learn how to make money playing video games on RUclips. In any case, he's a powerful metagame force, with absolutely no interest in online game development schools.

Check out my interview with fellow PokeTuber Reverend. We discuss Competitive Pokemon, hit show "The Sopranos" and also Competitive Monster Rancher.

Oh thank god Reverend is still alive
hey jim, have you ever thought of doing a video discussing possible new types from a competitive angle? i dont personally think that a new type would be a good idea, but its a popular topic of discussion and it could be an interesting video. same for currently unused type combinations which may show up in the future.

I play a lot of gen 5, and I'm fairly certain Baton Pass doesn't actually allow Celebi to escape safely from Pursuit Tyranitar.
do not let these plant base creatures distract you from the fact that the generation 2 uubl menace meganium is indeed a horse
Controversial
You mean a zebra.
Most people rejected their message.
They hated them because they told them the truth.
The "horse vs dinosaur" debate has obscured the hidden third option, which is that Meganium is clearly a hippo
It's a Giraffe, duh
Tfw Jimothy forgot Leech Seed was a Gen 1 move.
Folks I'm a fool.
Jimothy Fool some would say
I mean it's the same vibe as leech life pre gen 7. Nobody used leech seed because it didn't work in the gen 1 meta.
Tbf leech seed basically doesn't exist in gen 1. That shit is ass
You're off the horse council
Meganium and Tropius being ass proves that game freak has a bias against long necked grass Dinos
Amaura/Aurorus is ass too, it's not limited to just grass types
@@brunop.8745great neck would like to have a word.
Unless you play against Tropius in random battles and it stall you out.
Electric Great Necked Dinos, on the other hand...
Was about to say Raging Bolt will csst Thunder on your head for that comment
Every plant has a plan

The plan is photosynthesis
iron mugulis has hacked into pokémon showdown and has caused it to go offline, this is not sane
iron mugulis must be stopped… only one grass type mon can stop him, Wo-chien
@@mintyerbwo chein is Macargos brother
Cannot believe Jim is disrespecting Meganium Thee Stallion like this 🐴
Jims horsegirl era is amusing to say the least
If Meganium isn't a horse, why does it have an HP stat?

Really enjoying these 'through-the-generations' analysis videos, though your gen 3 stuff always feels the most unique and interesting. Thank you for the nice content Mr. Cool.
You can really notice his passion for gen 3 when he talks about it in multigen videos like this one ^^
I also really enjoy listening to these types of videos, his style is chill but passionate, like some kind of radio commentator :D
Just call him Jimothy, Mr. Cool was his father
At this point I click on the video if only to listen to the “but first…” segment and be graced with Jimothy’s endless wisdom
it's worth noteing meganium has no malice toward horses or dino's he is just lost
Assault Vest Tangrowth still gives me nightmares.
I'm loving these "types in competitive Pokemon" videos. I can't wait for the dragon, normal, steel, and fire type videos. You're doing great, thank you.
"May I Enter?"
"Neigh"
How did you fumble this Jim??? This is insane
His accent mixed with his annunciation tickles my brain in a very good way. Love the longer discussion vids
Grass is actually one of the most solid types in competitive Pokemon.
Although grass types suffer an enormous 5 weaknesses
more like one of the worst
@@philippecomics4727 most notably to the common fire and ice types
@@philippecomics4727most notably to rhe common fire and ice types
@@Kenny-Blankenship they also have a respectable 4 resistances
Oh no it's that prick ferrothorn again!
Ohhhh brother this guy STINKS!
Your content is so cozy. I feel like I'm back in high school with my friends when I watch your stuff
Jumpluff has been confirmed to have its roots from French ancestors, primarily discovered through the move "encore". The past paradox form of Jumpluff, "Flying Pom" may need to be explored
4:11 fun fact, Chansey recently fell out of the big 3. It’s still 3rd on the viability list but more and more top players are experimenting with Chaneyless teams.
Chansey is still Large in my opinion
@@jimothycoola large egg
My favorite grass type is Tropius. I mean its a flying tree brontosaurus wearing a green biker helmet with a banana beard. what's not to love?
in gen 4 i believe the giga drain buff you were thinking off was the pp buff from 8 to 16, the power increase came in gen 5 indeed
As for the call to action:
The only grass types that are ones I enjoy are Roserade (one of my favorites ever actually), Ludicolo (definitely at least top 30), Breloom, and Ogerpon if we count legendaries I actually really enjoy the concept and its character
Nobody:
Jim: Rillerboom
Daaaayyyuuummm Rilla with the hard R
My favorite grass type in history is Lotad. Some would say it's not a real Pokemon but it has 100% usage in the Lotad Cup metagame
My favourite Grass-type is probably Breloom. Such a banger mon that's been so different in so many different Generations while still retaining viability.
That sprite for Parasect is quite nefarious. Thank you for bringing it to my attention.
Small shoutout from me to Leafeon for having what I’ll call “the Miltank vibe” of high Speed, Defense and Attack at once with semi-reliable healing.
Not very good because of a very limited moveset, but especially in Gen 4 it’s one of those pokemon that break the mold of what you expect a physically bulky pokemon to look and act like
Water, Electric, Ground are such amazing resistances honestly.
Grass has a lot of weaknesses but not all of them are common as coverage (poison is fairly rare as coverage and the only notable bug moves are typically non-STAB U-turn and maybe First Impression). The resistances are all common and necessary for a good team. The only other way to get all of these resistances currently are the Latis and Hydreigon.
Maybe in the future, we'll also get a Water or Dragon/Flying type with an electric immunity ability, or a Ground/Flying with a water immunity ability (triple immunity).
Not only is grass tied for having the most weaknesses, its also tied as being the most resisted type in the game.
Compared to Fire and Water, it feels like they got the short end of the competitive stick, and only survive due to some good pokemon being made with the type rather then the type itself carrying mons
It also has some of the best moves in the game (Spore/Sleep powder, Leech Seed, Matcha Gatcha, Rage Powdee in VGC, Grassy Glide), and I would say that they were the main contributors to Grass' success
Jimothy I’ve been here since the money got different (RIP that song but not the creator) and I gotta say; your content is fantastic. Your running paradox gag, and even just the informational nature of your content is perfect. Keep going man glad I subbed
One look at my profile pic and you can instantly tell who my favorite grass mon is. Cradily as a Pokémon is goofy, that’s enough for me to love it. Also Grass/Rock is a very unique typing. Extremely scarce to the point that only 3 in the series exists, overlong being the most recent.
Rock and Grass, my two favorite types, getting through the generations videos back to back?
Truly an epic gamer moment
I wasn’t really onboard with grass types at first but I must admit that they really grew on me as of late
My fave Grass type is probably Tapu Bulu. This dude is canonically some kind of 🗿 and he also happens to be extremely fun to play with a Choice Band or a Swords Dance set. The gorilla drummer does not exist, it's a scam
Grass types in first 2 gen ou "Can I offer you a nice Eggy in this trying time"
Love grass types. I often find them more fun than just "BIG FIRE GO BOOM".
Unapologetically used grass starters in every game (yes, even that one)
I've never once used them on my first playthrough
I always go for water unless it's a nuzlocke
Wait but even gen [generation] ??? You’re so daring!
Based and sleep powder-pilled
I used the Grass starters in Ruby, White, Sun, Ultra Sun, Supernova Sun (I like Decidueye; didn't use him in Legends Arceus because like Typhlosion even more) and Scarlet.
plz tell me this means you’re doing one of these for every type? 😍
love how gen 3 is always half of the video
Your videos bring me joy and love watching them before work! Keep it up Jimothy
Gen 1 Razor Leaf almost always crits if you're fast enough, so it's a pretty terrifying attack. If Eggy got it the Big 4 might still exist.
Great to see my favorite type highlighted!
The best grass-type of all time? That is Rowlet, indeed! The most cute, charismatic, well-designed round thing ever!! 😊
I love rillaboom but what the fuck was gamefreak thinking when they gave the dude a whole entire drum kit. Its a gorilla folks! It's supposed to pound on it's CHEST. Where the hell does a whole drum kit come into play?
That's why it shouldve been Grass/ROCK
1:10 Meganuim would never commit such a heinous act. Clearly, this is the past Paradox form of Ditto, Shifting Matter, using the move Transform to disguise itself.
Serperior is my favorite - even before contrary was a thing for it. Seeing a new snake Pokemon in gen 5 was wild and it looked so dignified.
Watching a video about grass types while enjoying some grass 🍃🍃
Exeggutor is like the first grass type I think of when I think of grass types most of the time haha
Love it
I really like grass types. They are used to counter water and ground types which are some of the best types in the game.
And the utility they bring is great. Offensively they're bad, but things like leech seed and spore makes them just great.
Honorable mention goes to Gloom for terrorizing a VGC format alongside its partner-in-crime, Dewgong.
Grass is one of my favorite types. Some types like Water just get a ridiculous amount of favoritism with their own weather effect and very good offensive and defensive profile.
Then there’s Grass with many weaknesses, a lot of stuff that resists, no viable stab option until Gen 4 but has a very clutch set of resistances and utility options that let it thrive.
It is definitely one of my favourite types in the game... so many interesting mons...
My favorite are roserade and bulbasaur line.
I dont remember you talking about the prankster fairy whymsicott. Is it no lt used? I thought it was...
I love this videos with your voice. Have you ever done audiobook work?
Nice! Grass is my favorite typing. You see, I always play as a druid and I always, ALWAYS, cast sleep
I'm in a gen 9 monotype doubles draft tournament (in game not on showdown) and i have the grass type!
They called me a madman for focusing around shiftry but he's been instrumental in every matchup.
Wind rider tailwind plus fake out explosion and rock slide. Plus i can swap to its weirdly good movepool depending on matchup
Have you ueard of the hacks Pokemon Crystal Legacy and the recent Yellow Legacy? I'm curious to see how they fix up Tropius in their planned Legacy version of Emerald.
Goodluck getting on the Horse Council Jim!
Isn't eggie better in gen 3 ubers, than it is in OU?
When you have a mon that sets sun automatically(groudon), i guess that is to be expected.
My favorite grass type is probably serperior. I think it deserved the dual dragon type. But regardless, it's a pokémon playing on snakes' stealth tactics by BEING the grass some might use for cover. Contrary is insane, of course. And it's the kind of smug that does not mock me. It's an elegant fellow with a simple but effective design.
I appreciate that you outline what all the abilities are. FSG can slide into a habit where he talks as if everyone knows every ability in the game. No hate at him though
Like the baton pass user's not being hit by pursuit. I had no idea about that
hey jimbo keep making me laugh, yer a legend mate
There needs to be a grass/wood type split like how there’s both rock and ground types.
What wouks the functional difference be between the two?
@@marshalledelen4687 wood type is more woody. 8x weak to fire. Grows larger from water.
grass type being my favourite type is ironic given i am gastrodon's strongest soldier but plants are cool and so is all the utility options grass gets
jimothy, is it true that the paradox pokemon Iron Mugulis has caused the recent pokemon showdown outage?
As someone who hasn’t played since Gen V this was a cool way to see how much powercreep has affected competitive play
People sleep on the grass type way too much. Yeah weaknesses to fire, flying, ice and u-turn aren't great, but you know what is? Resistances to ground, water, electric and grass. Even on its own that's pretty managable too, its only when those weaknesses get exacerbated with a secondary type that doesn't blend well like dark or psychic that the grass type becomes bad.
In case anyone doesn't know.
Old gens that don't receive tier changes will not have Pokemon rise or drop tiers anymore, I'll just refer to it as being locked cause it's easier that way. If a pokemon becomes unviable in a locked old gen OU, it will remain OU instead of dropping to UU. To show that the Pokemon are not OU viable, but locked into OU, they seperate them and show them as 'OU by technicality'.
These are UU or lower caliber pokemon, but won't ever drop because the Gen has since become locked
Zarude-Dada's potential is limitless truly.
Grassy Terrain isn't actually a new mechanic, it was introduced in Gen 6, but jt was only able to be set with the attack grassy terrain
Espacially the Florges line had it, however like no one used it, because... it is bad! Well the terrains aren't bad, they have the same effects as always, but no way to set it without the Surge abilities, well it's bad
The Ghost and Darks are gonna be insane when we get to them
Mr Jimothy using the word myriad correctly. You love to see it.
I'm super mixed on Meowscarada cause on one hand man I'm getting tired of speedy sweeper protean starter final evolutions
but on the other hand it's really fun to use
Water types next
Talk about a long video lol
That would take quite few hours 😅
Leech Seed has been introduced in gen1 and it's sometimes run on Eggy.
Also the best grass type in gen2 is Celebi since it's in ubers
Why are Glastrier and Spectrier omitted from the Horse Council?
I can’t believe you neglected to mention the world renown meganium Counter set
These Botanical Beasts have taken a firm gras(s)p over the Competitive Pokemon Universe (CPU). Having spread like weeds, these Grass Pokemon will continue to show their dominance over the CPU for years to come.
Victreebel rose to OU!
Chople ferrothorn is also used to check keldeo and terrakion in gen 5
Good video
Yeah.
@@jimothycoolany gaming today?
Shaymin fell off in DPP because spdef Clefable completely dominates it. Shaymin was excellent for its ability to fit on Fire Water Grass balance, force switches with the threat of seed flare, and leech seed protect chipping everything before punching holes later. Then a huge spdef wall that’s immune to passive damage shows up and invalidates all previous defensive strategies, and Shaymin had trouble keeping up.
Is there a reason you don't mention Celebi until Gen 3? It's a Gen 2 mon and I thought it was good in GSC
It's an Uber mon (for now, maybe hooh and celebi drop to ou in the future, there have been done tournaments with those 2 in ou)
I never realized that Venusaur is faster than Breloom. wtf
wo-chiens relevance is on full display this video
A type balanced around its move pool rather than than the type chart.
I'm still malding over the sleep moves clause. I'm itching to use Yawn Sylveon and Spore Brute Bonnet.
Gen 7 marks the last time I had fun playing OU. Everything fell short after it.
Grassy terrain also weakens bulldoze and I think it used to affect magnitude as well
Venusaur actually outclassed victreebell in uu and NU of rby..
Vic is projected to drop to PU (prob bad in pu if I am gonna be honest looking at zubl)
It went back up to ou, and yeah, venusaur outclasses victribell in literally everything but wrap abuse (including swords dance sweeping, slash/rasor leafdoesn't work with swords dance)
@@Dragostorm21 u prob do run leaf on SD because the move pool is so sparce for Venu..
But yeah besides wrap and stuns pore (both r rarely useful enough to warrant a niche in uu and NU) venu's better bulk and very very crucially that speed (which in nu is HUGE) makes it so much better
12:40 if I want to contact the Ghost Department, who do I call?
Finally, someone who agrees Horsea is a horse. Now it needs High Horsepower, it would lowkey be REALLY good on Kingdra dragon dance set.
Rock (Rhydon, Tyranitar, Aerodactyl, Terrakion, Garganacl, Glimmora, etc,) and Ice (Articuno, Jynx, Abomasnow, Mamoswine, Weavile, Kyurem-B, A-Ninetales, Baxcalibur, etc.) would be interesting type videos to cover, considering their bad track record
You're in luck, because the Rock type video already exists
"If Ferrothorn returns to gen 9 I think it will probably see use in OU once again"
Given the generation is effectively over and it missed out on all the DLC, I don't think so...
What does "HP type: Dark" mean?
8:00 I think you mean for Exeggutor, but didn’t leech seed existing gen 1? IIRC it uses the same counter for damage as Toxic, so using both would actually ramp leech seed over time.
I think it got buffed to its modern version in Gen 3 as I think it was still 1/16 hp drain at this point and not 1/8 like later. Leech seed is a cool move
Ty for the videos Mr.Cool
Edit: was buffed to 1/8 damage in Gen 2, I am a fool.
My favorite grass type is Lilligant
You know what? I support Meganium's bid for the horse council. If they feel like a horse, they're a horse :)
Can confirm Jimothy is a grass type sympathizer
Eggy in Gen 1 likes Mega Drain in some teams to help it's longevity, certainly helps when you are facing MieZam teams
Giga drain failing in Gen 2 vs Substitute is annoying, which helps Starmie fight against opposing Eggy.
And Meganium in GSC, even if people meme how bad it is, is certainly the most viable Gen 2 starter, it helps that it has access to seeds + screens and can chip some of its checks with ease
Where is Cradily? Is he safe?
