"Bad" Pokemon That Work Competitively.

  • Pokemon Competitive Singles is an environment where those with the best Stats and Tools rise to the top.
    Metagames form around these Powerful Pokemon, and sometimes this leads to seemingly "Bad" Pokemon rising up to fill gaps and punish these threats in specific ways.
    Here are 3 examples of "Bad" Pokemon that have their uses in Competitive player. These examples are from Gens 3, 4 and 5 OU.
    Is this insane? Absolutely.

    Some will never figure out how to get Sceptile in Pokemon Scarlet and Pokemon Violet. But famous player Jim Cool is well aware of the Best Sceptile Moveset in Competitive, and even how to Sceptile Shiny Farm. Many aren't and never will be. That's just the unfortunate reality of the world.
    Arceus exists.
    The below text is very relevant to many people.
    Game Freak just blew all other online game development schools out of the water with this incredible new 2022 release. You're gonna need to get a game design degree online, and FAST, if you want to make a better game than this. Not even the best strategy games android reddit could hold a candle to this breathtaking Next generation competitive Pokemon experience.
    Scream Tail is the Jigglypuff of our wildest dreams. It has been buffed with some higher statistics and the incredible ability, Protosynthesis. Gen 9 Competitive Pokemon wouldn't be the same without this powerful pink blob. He kinda looks like someone I met in one of my game design and development courses.
    Gen 9 Pokemon Showdown is one of the greatest online gaming sites in history. From Pikachu and Charizard, to Palafin and Roaring Moon, The new Pokemon games, Pokemon Scarlet & Violet, have introduced a lot of new faces. Can I succeed in one of the best android games of all time? If so, I'm gonna get myself a Walmart bakery Pokemon cake to celebrate.
    Gholdengo is a Pokemon made of pure gold. He must have done some online business management courses to accumulate all that wealth. Or perhaps he might want to learn how to make money playing video games on RUclips. In any case, he's a powerful metagame force, with absolutely no interest in online game development schools.

      False, he was ranked OU with the release of Teal Mask, the only reason it didn’t stay was because of Ogerpon Heartflame being in the tier. And after we all know Gholdengo paid Finch to artificially drop it to the bottom tiers so no one even tried it.

    Bronzong getting access to Rain Dance is one of those seemingly insignificant details made for the sake of lore and flavor that I always loved and tried to make work in games/fangames, I never played Gen 4 competitively but I always appreciated how this became a viable thing

      I will say, aside from that, Bronzong is my favorite "bad Pokemon" in the gen 6 onward era. Esp in gen 7 and 8, it's one of the few things that can reliably switch in on Tapu Lele and threaten it back.
      Also could *somewhat* help with Kyurem until they realized they could Pressure stall your steel moves or run the very specific Kee Berry+sub set.

    This is insane. I decided this week to try my hand at Gen 3 OU and picked Banette to be on my team for all of the reasons you listed, except I have Knock-off instead of Taunt. You must have taught me well, Master Jim.

    • @jimothycool
      @jimothycool  11 дней назад +30

      When I first tried out Banette I was using Knock Off too but I found it was too slow for what Banette wants to do.
      Knock Off gets a lot of value on teams with a solid defensive core that can keep the game going long, but Banette doesn't stick around long at all. Taunt applies more short pressure so it makes more sense

    This isn't particular to Smogon singles, but I found Accelgor to be an extremely useful utility mon in a gen 8 Draft League tournament I did. With its high speed, I could substitute multiple times in a row to completely invalidate my opponent's Dynamax, and then take advantage of that in multiple ways. A couple notable sets were Liechi Berry + Baton Pass, because Substitute would bring me down to 25% over 3 turns and then I could pass to my sweepers, and Encore, which messed with opponents who wanted to counter my utility. Baton Pass and U-Turn gave me a lot of flexibility with switching, and both Unburden and Sticky Hold were useful in some matchups. A very righteous bug overall.

    Pokemon can be designed to fill a niche, although not always capable across the board. You can engage with them socially or competitively. That's why I enjoyed it when they at least attempted to push things like contests as beyond the rote mechanics of the battle system
    Competitively, in a choice between Vanilish and Garcomp, you probably want the latter as your closer. But if you want to spend all day petting funny pikachu, they thought of that too

    "one in gen 3" bet this took you like 1 minute to find a low tier pokemon (bannete) with a niche because in gen 3 you could look at any low tier and they probably have a niche because its gen 3

    Mantine @ Leftovers

    Wormadam-trash was the goat of gen 6 UU leads. With occa it survives a fire blast, anticipation makes you know they got it and flash fire arcanine with cc destroys common leads like azelf or scarf hydragon.

    • @RuneKillerz109
      @RuneKillerz109 10 дней назад

      @@lucasgreer1736 sash isn't needed as only fire type moves can one-shot and occa lets your have more hp. Btw gyro can kill most non-sash azelfs (back then dunno of they run high hp/lower speed now)
      I ran gyro rocks toxic protect. Dunno the exact spreads tho as i have lost my pc back when. But it was heavy spdef (dunno if 252 or something like 156 and rest in def tho) no speed IVs and neg speed pos spdef nature. It's pretty decent as a physical wall with it's typing aswell. The strat is either tank a fire blast and rocks up then switch into arcanine or instant switch if you think you need more hp on it. You can run a cleric if you want a balance team but offense (not HO just offense) is what worked better imo. With a cleric for the initial fire blast wormadam can wall and stall nearly the whole meta tho.

    Speaking of qwilfish, i dont unxerstand how Overqwil fell to UU.
    It has intimidate to hold opponents damage and increase their longevity
    Toxic spikes
    Crunch to potentially cripple opponents bulk and come in later with a physicsl attacker
    Deatinity bind to bring an opponent with you, and since you intimidated it you have more controll on how much dmage they deal.
    I dont get it
