Pokemon Competitive Singles has been kind to Dragonite over the years. One of the most iconic Pokemon of all time and the original "Pseudo Legendary", Dragonite seems to receive both direct and indirect buffs as each new generation releases.
However, there was a time when Dragonite really struggled. Back in Gen 3 OU, Salamence was released who completely outclassed Dragonite. Salamence had identical typing with higher speed and a superior ability.
Does Dragonite have anything to offer in Gen 3? It might just surprise you folks.

Some will never figure out how to get Dragonite in Pokemon Scarlet and Pokemon Violet. But famous player Jim Cool is well aware of the Best Dragonite Moveset in Competitive, and even how to Dragonite Shiny Farm. Many aren't and never will be. That's just the unfortunate reality of the world.
Arceus exists.
The below text is very relevant to many people.
Game Freak just blew all other online game development schools out of the water with this incredible new 2022 release. You're gonna need to get a game design degree online, and FAST, if you want to make a better game than this. Not even the best strategy games android reddit could hold a candle to this breathtaking Next generation competitive Pokemon experience.
Scream Tail is the Jigglypuff of our wildest dreams. It has been buffed with some higher statistics and the incredible ability, Protosynthesis. Gen 9 Competitive Pokemon wouldn't be the same without this powerful pink blob. He kinda looks like someone I met in one of my game design and development courses.
Gen 9 Pokemon Showdown is one of the greatest online gaming sites in history. From Pikachu and Charizard, to Palafin and Roaring Moon, The new Pokemon games, Pokemon Scarlet & Violet, have introduced a lot of new faces. Can I succeed in one of the best android games of all time? If so, I'm gonna get myself a Walmart bakery Pokemon cake to celebrate.
Gholdengo is a Pokemon made of pure gold. He must have done some online business management courses to accumulate all that wealth. Or perhaps he might want to learn how to make money playing video games on RUclips. In any case, he's a powerful metagame force, with absolutely no interest in online game development schools.

Salamence is such a skibidi toilet, he destroyed Dragonite's mewing streak!

It's so weird how Extremespeed skipped a gen
It's because only the one gift Dratini in Johto could learn extreme speed, it didn't come back until HG/SS
@@niXourbisDidn't know that, thanks for explaining
@@niXourbis Still weird that they didn't give Dratini a way to learn it in Gen 3 though
@@williamdrum9899 many people don't realize that the transition from GSC to Ruby/Sapphire was the _first_ Dexit; all those legacy GSC moves lost until the Virtual Console Crystal version brought back some of them (but not the event moves still)
I'm glad Showdown is back up. Now I can go back to rubbing my chin and musing "of course, good point" on RUclips videos while never actually playing the damn game myself
Real
Hey knowledge is knowledge largely same like I’ll play occasionally with friends but I don’t play competetive I still have fun learning how yugioh which I also like to watch some videos on sometimes I don’t play that in any capacity but hey knowledge is knowledge so I feel ya haha
So real, I don’t play competitive or even casual online Pokémon, but you bet your sweet bippity I still watch WolfeyVGC
Dragonite gets inner focus and still loses focus when people hit it after a focus punch. This is insane.
There's an IQ skill in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon called No-Charger which allows you to use charge moves without delay. Inner Focus should've had a bonus effect like that.
Don’t let this video distract you from the fact that Jimothy Cool lost to a Squirtle team.
When I need to see this
@@sheban777 on Jimothy gaming
Wasn't it actually Squirtle + Pikachu?
@@sheban777 It was in his monkey monday video. Squirtle did nothing. He was running a team without Tyranitar and got swept by endure reversal Heracross.
Jimothy Not So Cool
Dragonite's suffering in Gen 3 was just a set up for the greatest training arc in gen 4, followed by the greatest tournament arc in gen 5 and the best redemption arc in Gen 9.
Turns out Dragonite is the main character.
If Dragonite had just held onto Shed Skin from its preevolutions instead of getting Inner Focus, it would have been very good at shrugging off paralysis and burns while doing its thing as a bulky attacker. Fly might have become a staple of its sets earlier by giving more opportunities to stall out status effects.
Or if the recent buffs to inner focus were there from the beginning
It's crazy seeing how many Pokemon in ADV OU can get away with running no STAB.
That is what I like about ADV meta. There are powerful moves and STAB combos, but there is no expectation of Pokémon minmaxing because it just is not there yet, so Pokemon teams, with individual Pokemon and other stuff, have to be creative.
The lower power level my dude, no Skill Combat or Skillrage (120p/100ac) moves who only pros can click it
dragonite is lovely, he deserves a hug
Double Magcargo is something the world would never be ready for
Imagine if for Focus punch, what would stop it from working is that you get flinched when you take damage. So Inner Focus mons with Focus Punch would get free access to a 150 BP minus priority move
I don’t know if anyone here watched/read Baki, but my mental image for Focus Punch being used is Kaoru Hanayama’s strongest punch
And no Yujiro to tank it
he made the biggest reversal during gen 9
He may have lost the battle, but he's won the war.
I Know you despise post-multiscale dragonite, but honestly the boi deserves it, he struggled in your favorite generation 🥺
Dragonite: You
Salamence: The guy she tells you not to worry about
And now in more recent metas Dragonite has outgrown Salamence
Theres a moral here somehwere folks

Mom, can we get a Salamance? No Son, we have a dragonite at home
I personally think that it’s cool that Dnite isn’t very good in Gen 3 and is only used in edge cases to compress roles or run interesting coverage with a wide movepool, because it’s really obnoxious to deal with in so many other generations. Even when it’s not great, it’s usually still fairly linear and takes advantage of uninteractive tools or powerful generational gimmicks. ADV is one of very few generations where it’s both fun to use and fun to play against.
i've actually used dragonite on a superman stall build and it's really good there, it fills a similar role to articuno but it has some actual resistances which i personally prefer. the set i use is hp fly, rest, sleep talk and heal bell, and it can switch into a pretty wide variety of mons like fighting types, water types (as long as you scout for ice beam first), fire types, celebi, flygon and rachi if it doesn't have ice punch. it can sit on anything by rest talking, and it heals its own sleep if it calls heal bell which makes it even better. it functions similarly to wish mence but it has a lot more longevity, and you're trading wish for heal bell so you'd either need lots of recovery or another mon with wish.
I always miss my Gen 5 rain team Dragonite with Draco Meteor, Thunder, Hurricane, and Surf and a surprise Choice Scarf. It was such a beast that Dragonite overtook Salamence as my favorite pokemon. Respect my GOAT
This provided really good insight into Dragonite. Thank you, Jim!
Its so cool what you're doing for the community with gen 3 revival. One of the best pokemon youtubers for sure :)
I love that dragonite had the last laugh
Love the Pilot wings briefing song used in your videos!
It would make a lot of sense if innerfocus pokemon had extra benifits to using focus punch and focus blast
I remember using Dragonite in gen3 OU with
Substitute Focus Punch Flamethrower Roar it worked quite well for me.
Imagine it, Wish Salamence alongside Heal Bell Dragonite
"there's nothing preventing you from running Dragonite and Salamence." Lance moment
imagine if Inner Focus Ability actually negated the flinch from Focus Punch charge
Can you do a Focus Punch 👊 Video?
I think that only in gen 3 is so prominent just like Gen 1 Hyper beam
great video as always jim. also I was wondering what your thoughts were on the leaked past paradox form of marcargo, "macarstop"?
Personally, I prefer the future paradox form, Macargone
I am a firm Dragonite believer. It has better defensive stats, boltbeam coverage, and access to Heal Bell. I believe the proper way to use it is to use it with a defensive special attacking Heal Bell set on slower teams. I have a Superman team that I run with Dragonite and it’s a menace. Thunder Wave cripples opponents, Heal Bell keeps the rest of your team healthy (especially Flygon), and BoltBeam coverage makes sure the enemy can’t get too comfortable. Overall, I think Dragonite has enough of a niche to separate itself from Salamence in that regard. It’s frankly insane.
On a typing theme continuation, it would be cool to see a video covering altaria
Next game I would like it if we would get another psuedo like meta or ttar that's not dragon type, just for some variety tbh
Thank god the world will never have to face jimmy’s unstoppable 6 macargo team
Thunder Wave Starmie? My Starmie OHKOs Mences with Ice Beam!
The dragonite team is very interesting looking. Do you have a pokepaste link for it? I'm bad at EV spreads so I'm curious what was put.
Hi Jimothy Cool, I have wanted to say this for a while now but your favourite channel when it comes to Pokémon and, keep up the good work. Btw, love your made up Pokémon like Iron Mugulus and Iron Fridge, Sorry if I got the names wrong.
Wow! New tournament ❤
I have to say that I never thought about combining Heal Bell with Rest before.
Surprised there was no mention of the loss of extreme speed in the genrational shift. If Dragonite still had that it would have a geninue niech that Mence couldn't replicate and give it a shot of being a real part of OU.
The Dinosaur Council is meeting to discuss Dragonite’s viability within their ecosystem
Dragonites stunning innovation of having not just one, but multiple scales would later allow him to surpass his rival, salamance.
I have a lot of nostalgia for Dragonite. I used to think it was the most powerful none legendary dragon in the game because of fighting the 3 Dragonites Lance uses in Soul Silver. Until I went to postgame and met lead Salamence.... those where the good times when I used to only train my starter.
It's honestly really cool that Dragonite can still hang with the big boys over twenty years later with a few really good tools every other gen or so. It's like surprising the oldest son with a new car on their birthday.
Whoa there jim, what about the multi hit moves to break sub and then the users focus?
agility + a large amount of physical defense investment lets you live any common +1 rock slide (except tar's) and inner focus lets you ignore flinch, if you pass dnite a cm you can set up in aero's face and ohko it with bolt or beam (or raw ohko it with blizzard or thunder); agility lets you get away with investing almost nothing in speed, it's a fun set
i wish theres a metagame where its current gen (or natdex) but specifically without the newest gen mons, just to see how much of power creep is the new mons vs everything else
Still have not to this day have built a Dragonite, late alone even used one for a playthrough.
fantastic stuff lately, jim. I might even forgive you for the whole google stuff, perhaps after dragon types throughout the generations I will.
Imagine if Inner Focus allowed unbroken Focus Punches.
If inner focus also neglected flinch from focus punch, dragonite would probably be OU ranked
Heal Bell Dragonite and Refresh Salamence were both from purifying them as Shadow Pokemon in Pokemon XD Gale of Darkness if I recall. I'm kinda curious how big an impact XD's purification moves were on the meta overall cause I remember alot of random Pokemon getting moves like Refresh and Baton Pass.
i wish dragonite got extremespeed in adv, it would be such a cool option to give it it's own identity
i think its access to heal bell is cool but idk when you’d use it - because if you’re using physical offence you’d probably have an sd pass celebi, right? and that can fit heal bell
Dragonite is far from bad in gen 3. More people should give him a try 😊 I'd like to hear about my favorite UUBL mon in ADV OU, Alakazam.
It’s just a worse Salamence honestly. It’s not bad it’s just there’s a very narrow instance you would ever want to use it over Mence.
TIL Zapdos fell to UU
so long sweet prince
That why that Dragonite is my favorite pseudo legendary
Jimothy what did you do while Showdown was down, I went insane.
You actually can break focus punch behind a sub. Rock blast! A very niche interaction, but it's possible.
can’t wait for babymariofan to tear it in up the jimvitational
Every Dragon has its Nite.
Is the comedy of Altaria next?
Now I need to think of my best anti-Dragonite strategies for low ladder
It's not a story gamefreak will tell you.
DK64 music is much appreciated
Super unrelated to the video, but thinking about substitute made me wonder why Ninjask is allowed to run it? If it's not considered as a stat boost, I think it probably should be, since it gets passed by baton pass. Perhaps this could be an alternative to banning Ninjask outright
Thank the lord you can’t run double magcargo. Altho I’ve heard some talk of players using slugma as a second, slightly worse magcargo
It’s kinda fun using Dragonite as a simple special attacker, especially if you can pass a Calm Mind to it.
Flamethrower or Fire Blast
Thunderbolt or Thunder
Ice Beam or Blizzard
HP Grass
It can hit everything pretty hard and is immune to Intimidate…..Dragonite can be a pretty decent Pokémon in Gen 3
Inner Focus didn't make you immune to intimidate in gen 3. That was only added later after Game Freak realized how broken Intimidate is
You know what they say though, every Drag has its Onite.
Well, doesn’t matter in the end, seeing how badly it exceeded anything Salamence could do on its own
Gen 3 Dragonite is almost as tragic as Rattrock's losing streak against Fake Gameplay. We must root for them to turn the tables sooner rather than later.
I just watched last dragonite video 20 minutes ago
Love the thumb
Can you do a vid about registeel in gen 3v
i wish i had the stones to play Showdown. I cant ever bring myself to do it because i fear being at the bottom of the ladder
Kind of off-topic, but, if Pokemon Showdown implemented all the in-game entry animations, and true battle animations, for at least Gen 3 and Gen 2, it would be incredible and practically an unbeatable experience, for me, in terms of battling others.
this is insane
Still far from the gen3ou elite crew but I'll keep improving
If you're actually asking what I'd like to hear about next, it is whether 2 turn moves (fly, dig etc.) have ever seen use. I imagine that they're pretty bad and can be exploited by the opponent, but has there ever been a use for them?
See divecats in comments
Could get another video about teams for beginners
Inner Focus really should have made it so Focus Punch would activaye even if you got hit whilst charging.
this so much (it would've been nuts but so cool)
that sounds insane for gen 3 but actually not rly out there for gen 9 imo
Ok that's too broken ngl
@@mrtrollnator123 Is it? Only affects like 3 mons (Dragonite/Alakazam/Sneasel), and Focus Punch would still have the significant drawback of being negative priority, so it sort of has anti-synergy with Dragon Dance/high speed stats. I'm not sure it would even make Dragonite better than Salamence still although it would certainly make it closer.
@@DJFracus nowadays not really but back in gen 3? Instantly bannable especially for dragonite 💀 the other 2 not so much
My 5th grade ass thought Inner Focus would allow Dragonite to just already be focused. Gamefreak please allow Dragonite to lock in
BKC for Jimvitational wild card entry
Dragonite gets done so fucking dirty, even to this day. Its hidden ability is relatively difficult to come by legitimately. BW, Multiscale is only available via Dream World (discontinued). X/Y/OR/AS, you needed to have a friend safari with Dratini so it's functionally impossible to obtain offline (without PKHeX that is). I say all of this because Inner Focus Dragonites are the Dragonites that get absolutely no fucking love whatsoever. He looks like a Dragon Tales character, he's a touch slow for my liking, but he's a goddamn TANK. I think Dragonite is the only Pokémon who has identical stats across every generation.
SoulWind and Leech in the same tournament??? we are about to see levels of Heat Previously Thought to be obtainable only by premiere fire type in Gen 3 OU, Macargo
Ice Beam go BRRRR
Dragonite is a physical attacker that can serve as a cleric in a pinch... So you're saying he's a Dragonborn Paladin?
Dragonite was the original pseudo legendary, and it has had a fantastic competitive career over the years.
Pretty amusing that neither of the gen 1 Pokémon that are still in OU in gen 9 were OU in gen. (Dragonite’s solidly UU in rby, and clefable has bounced between UU and NU)
It is funny that the Gamecube games just casually handed out Heal Bell to so many Pokemon lol
Dragonite was the original pseudo legendary
Yes, and?
and it has had a fantastic competitive career over the years
Ever since generation 5 when dragonite received the ability multi scale
Ever since generation 5, when dragonite recieved the ability multiscale, it absolutely soared it popularity and viability
The only old one that has not been updated in some way with a new form
The hatred Timothy has for this pokemon cannot be understated.
Yup yup
Pokemon GO fun fact: Dragonite is good in all leagues and outclassed Salamence in every league.
Although in great league it's outclassed by Dragonair.
In Gen 9, Dragonite is far superior to Salamence.
