Behind ever great man there lies a teacher, and this was certainly true of Bruce Lee, who claimed as his mentor a martial arts expert named Ip Man (1893-1972). A genius of Wushu (or the Chinese martial arts school), Ip Man (Donnie Yen) grew up in a China nearly ripped to pieces by racial hatred, nationalistic strife and warfare. He rose like a phoenix above these ashes, however, courtesy of his participation in matches against various Wushu masters and kung-fun warriors - ultimately training martial arts icons such as Bruce Lee. This biopic from director Wilson Yip dramatizes Ip's life story.

@@philou1467Although they don't admit it, Miura is extremely good, he forced Ip Man in his Prime to take out everything he knew in Wing Chun

There's a scene of general miura committing seppuku after this fight but it was cut from the movie
really? I'm glad that cut it out. This is honorable duel, there is no need for seppuku to dirty it.

5:27 in the end, even tho Ip Man refused to be defeated by opression, he changed nothing and China was still under Japanese boot. Helplessness of that situation is something I can sympathise with, but hopefully will never understand.

one is slow and strong, the other fast and weaker. like watching any manga or japanese cartoon. I love it
I like how this final scene isn’t necessarily the greatest fight but extremely symbolic. Ip Man feels useless/defeated at the site of his town’s destruction and this fight was supposed to be another notch in the Japanese army’s belt as a rigged loss for Ip but instead he brutalizes the general and like the black belts again defies Japan. He’s fighting a whole county and defending martial arts principle here more than Miura himself.
The fact ip man must have been so hungry and weak from starvation and still put the paws to him is crazy 😂

Japanese fighters can accept losing, it's always japanese judges that find issue with that. That's what I learned from watching Sumo.
Oh, but if you think this movie shows Japanese at their worst, I'm afraid you're sorely mistaken. There were tons of worse things they did during that war.
