So in the book, they expound on the diving scene as diving headfirst wasn’t the usual way to jump into water in Japan at the time, so there are metaphorical aspects of John’s willingness to “dive headfirst” while Torunaga strategically waits and learns and then (of course after John is tired from diving a bunch of times) challenges him to a race. It’s a great scene on many levels
Hatamoto is a title and can be translated as "guardian of the flag - basically a bannerman or upper vassal to a samurai lord :) And Buntaro... well, you know that there is good writing/acting when a shitty husband but a great warrior can still bring tears into your eyes ;)
He could have been a regular sailor in England, but he voluntarily chose to leave his child and pregnant woman behind to sail around the world knowing full well there was a high chance of never coming back. In the conversation he had with Mariko at the end she implied that by doing that he was fulfilling his duty to his lord, and he replied that no one ordered him to do that (he isn't a soldier), he willingly chose to join the dutch ship as a pilot simply because he loved the freedom of sailing the open sea. And when him and the dutch sailors plundered the spanish and portuguese bases along the way, he stole maps from a spanish sailor that indicated the safe route to Japan, so he decided that he wanted to be the first englishman to go there, and open a new trade route for England. That's what I understood from the show, and I think that is what she meant by "deadbeat dad".

The Black Ship is carrying the equivalent of $300,000,000.

Toranaga makes John dive so many times because
1) It tires him out before the race.
2) Finally gets John to take a "bath".
That is so cheeky!
More dramatic turns every episode. Hold on to your seat.
❤ спасибо,что ты есть ❤
Where is episode 4?
Deadbeat dad? He's been away working/at war. Would you say that of all soldiers/sailors?
