It never became a popular song and for that fact I feel grateful cuz people would've ruined it. I was 20 years old and going through exactly what song is saying in my life at the time. I'm 54 now and happy and happy to know this song.
Ah yes, The Lover Speaks. Like Andy Pawlak, one of those fantastic acts from the 1980s that never got the recognition they deserved. What a shame, this is such an incredible song. Loved the video also. Somewhere I have the album on cassette. And yes, infinitely better than the cover version!

My favorite version of the song, the original one! I listened this track for the first time in my aunt's tape when I was very young. I didn't understand the meaning but love the music. Now I am older and still love this version! This so legit! The best!
I am grateful to have added to the original version, I could finally hear it and like some things that the composer puts it also liked it, but the version of annie me sounds more round (I speak of all full feeling) and the way that Annie leaves the mysterious music

Not only is this version's pacing way off - But it's also so emotionally drained that it's pathetic.... Ta-Ta! - Hugs & Kisses 2 U all.
Now think Tantar debunk the nonsense version of Annie I'm not a fan of covers so much that I am a composer that since I started working with music for a long time. But admit Annie Lennox is not just a singer, I need not say how much this woman is talented is unnecessary to mention it. As David Freeman, Joseph Hughes wrote a song simply genius.
I don't understand the extreme stress put on every comment that labels this version as "superior". It's OK to like one or another, no need to put each one against the other.
For me the Annie Lennox cover is in a different league compared with this distorted , generic voiced , downbeat & dated 80's synth drum production , it is so much more joyous , uplifting & better produced in every way combined with Annie's unique sound which is timeless. Each to their own of course !.

I truly doubt if anyone searched for the original. I have The Lover Speaks on vinyl, hardy used. I remember 1986/87 this song played on the radio.

I could say that this is not superior, but bearable. Lennox version was plainly obnoxious.
