  • Let's get into this one very quickly. This week a global hair brand Curlsmith decided to take to the streets of the UK and interview the public on their thoughts on washing hair once a month. Needless to say myself amongst others in their comments where extremely disappointed by with the lack of education around hair types. (Being that the brand markets towards coily hair).
In this video I share my thoughts and opinions on this topic along with a few why why i feel they really missed took an L on this one.

I have 4c and I still wash my hair weekly even if it is in braids. It is about hygiene. Your scalp does not care about your hair type. And finally is it really a protective style if you are not taking care of you hair?

No its not but you can still keep your scalp clean in a protective style and moisturise ur hair. Hair doesn’t have to be washed every week

As a kid my mom washed my hair monthly. My hair was brushed daily and plaited into 2 pigtails or a bun. My hair thrived. From high school when I could do my own hair, I washed more frequently. I prefer washing hair more like weekly but my niece freaked out on me when I told her not to wash her hair more than twice a month cos she wears protective styles that don't need to be taken down every weekend. She is now down to washing every 3rd week. We have different curl types. I am 3 and she is 4. I wear my hair short, she has long hair. Her hair is medium density and thick, mine is low density and fine. So our routines are different cos of how different our hair is. I think this was a low blow on the part of Curlsmith. But it's also interesting to see how they cannot relate to a very wide audience who is part of their target market. I look out for things like that and simply move to a different brand cos I am hung up about crap like that ..... Like I won't use a curly/natural hair range that also markets relaxers. I know I am being petty but I am fussy like that..... Only about hair matters 😂

No i understand. I agree, it is off putting when you care about the brand values and what they stand for. Especially when they claim to be inclusive then put out something completely different.

Thanks for your perspective and sharing your experience. As a person with extremely straight hair I know my hair requires less maintenance than most hair types and my hair gets greasy if I don’t wash it often. This being said I’ve had enough black girlfriends to know that curly hair routines can require longer time between wash days. I honestly didn’t think one could go a month so as a mother to a black baby girl I appreciate learning more about curly hair maintenance. I do thank you for educating us that are truly curious or just trying to do right by our little girls with curls.

@@luzcannon9753it can require longer time but I say it is only so because of the current state of the market and what we know of black hair as it been neglected historically just like the people it’s attached to.

@@luzcannon9753once I tuned into myself and left the market and the mess of brands like this who seem to be off I seen so much less hassle in my routine.

I understand someone somewhere in their team being weirded out by ‘a month’ if that is not their experience, but the fact that the brand made it a thing by posting that tone-deaf message just shows that their team is useless for not stopping a dog whistle or they meant to be offensive. I think the latter because by now people should at least know when they are coming off as racist. They won’t get my $.

CS hair products have not worked for me. And I‘ve tried several of their products. Their (protein free) ‚moisturizing‘ shampoo and particularly the conditioner was absolutely horrible. Tossed it after first try as it totally dried out my hair.

To be honest I don’t know many, if anyone who only washes their hair once a month (unless ofc in braids). This maybe also a cultural thing. As a brand though they shouldn’t have hair shamed to be on the safe side.

I agree but definitely have done it myself. Nonetheless this was the wrong move by the brand

I’m a twice a week. Shampoo first then 2nd wash co wash. I do understand the once a month but not longer than that. I have used curlsmith and like it but made my soft hair too soft. I use something else now.

I can’t lie they asked the wrong people, obviously can’t judge a book by its cover, but from my observation I don’t think they care as much we do about our hair type or which products to use.But It’s a bit surprising tho once a month, never heard of it!

People's whose hair is lice prone wouldn't want to prolong their wash day, I can understand that their hair would be icky but textured hair is in a class of it's own. I deep shampoo my hair once a month and spritz weekly with aloe water mixture, my hair is softer than ever because I am not washing out my sebum. For me it was the ignorant interviewer talking the way she did, like wtf this is not even her topic. When asking questions for understanding ask the people that wash their hair monthly. When asking questions for further prejudice we include people in a conversation that it does not even apply to. Thanks, won't be buying curlsmith anymore.

This really hit the nail on the head. It definitely is not about the people in the video that’s why I refrained from commenting on them but the interviewer came across so distasteful and uneducated.

Yeah that sebum on afro hair especially really afro hair struggles to reach the end and I’ve said it before that it isn’t surprising to see people who go a month with no wash or have different methods to cleansing and caring.

Tbh the question was a generic one and should have explained why some people with afro and coily hair (not all) wash their hair monthly. I wouldn't get offended by it, if you're not happy about how they've marketed it then dont buy it. Simple.

    • @kekekurly
      @kekekurly  3 месяца назад +1

Exactly, it should have explained why . Key point as to why it was an ignorant post.
