    One of the things that always cracks me up about this movie is Mulan being so scandalized at the thought of the princesses having an arranged marriage, like the idea is so foreign to her. They're daughters of the emperor, of course they're gonna have politically advantageous marriages but also like...girl...we were introduced to your character on the morning you were going to see a matchmaker??? Arranged marriages are clearly the norm for most people in your culture lol.

    You know, they could have at least improved Mushu a thousand percent if they’d made sadness at losing Mulan his drive to sabotage the relationship, rather than his desire to keep his status. This movie is like they watched the original, took some notes, got drunk, and then made this sequel the next morning while hungover.

    I think what made this movie more insulting than the other direct-to-DVD movies is that you can tell that there was quality in this. The animation and style of it is so similar and faithful to the original. It seemed like they had put in at least a noticeable amount of effort to at least make this movie LOOK pretty. And, to their credit it is. INSULTINGLY so. Because apart from its looked, this sequel butchers or dumbs down the personalities of just about every character - and just straight up villanizes Mushu. Mushu may be selfish but he knew his limits and he certainly cared about Mulan.
    The message of the movie is lost in a sea of bad writing, mostly poor comedy, and a predictable, poorly-executed plot.
    .....But those expressions they did for Shang and Mulan when they fought were hilarious. I'll give the movie that XD.
    Anywho, great reaction as always, Welchy! I hope you react to "Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'hoole" or "Wolfwalkers" someday. I've mentioned them in previous comments and I stand by what I said. They're really nice animated films!+

    Disney sequels of '90 classics really were just cash grabs profiting from the the video stores era by being only direct to DVD and not going into theaters. Here's a quick list of what could you find when you rented one of these sequels:
    - Bad animation and bad script (The hunchback of Notre Dame 2)
    - Bad animation but kinda good story actually (Aladdin 2 and 3)
    - Kinda good animation but bad script (this movie, Little Mermaid 3, Pochaontas 2)
    - Kinda good animation and surprisingly kinda good script?? These are rare tho. The only two movies I'd put in this category are Lion King 2 and Cinderella 3 tbh

    I actually really enjoy this movie and its message. The humor is very early 2000s, which I don't actually hate. Also, if we're getting technical, the actual Mulan story features a war between the Northern Wei (where Mulan is from) and a Mongolic state, so the invaders being the Mongols this time instead of the Huns is actually a bit more accurate. China also did eventually end up falling to them so perhaps the lack of an alliance is a nod to the fact that they lost the war... IK the timeline is a bit off, but literally everything in the timeline of Mulan 1 and 2 is off XD
    Also a lot of people hate Mushu in this movie, but honestly he wasn't much better in the first - he just happened to be Eddie Murphy. He was still completely motivated by the fact that he wanted his pedestal back and was willing to jeopardize Mulan to do so, so it isn't that far off that he'd resort to something like trying to break her and Shang up while convincing himself that "it was for her".

    • @graemewest9887

      Yeah, but at least Mushu admitted in the first movie that he was just risking her life to help himself, and even in his intentions to help himself, he was still HELPING her; assisting her in the training until she was able to do it herself. ALSO, he led the troops over to the other camp with that fake letter, otherwise they wouldn’t have known that Shang’s father had died. And at least his plots actually WORKED. Here, he was just a moron. And at least in the first one, he was tired of being shunned and wanted to prove to the ancestors that he could be a good guardian to protect the family. Here, they had every right to be annoyed at him just wanting hot tubs and crap. But that’s just my opinion.

      my sister and I were just talking about the same thing! Mushu may have been more of a butthole in the second movie but it isn't too far from his original original character, in our opinion he was selfish in both films, mainly focused on his job. The thing was in the second film, it made sense for him to go to greater lengths and sabotage Mulan and Shang's relationship. He had grown to genuinely care so much for Mulan and so, on top of losing his job, he didn't want to risk losing her as well - something he stated in the movie. And being as selfish as he is in his mind it really was "bros before h0es". Mushu was probably too focused on himself to bother questioning whether it was really worth the heartbreak he would cause his best friend/family.
      Some may be upset because it seems as though he didn't develop from the first movie, but in the same breath it kind of makes sense considering he is literally hundreds of years old, to simply change overnight is a bold expectation.

    Personally....I agree with you that Shang's death scene and the scene after that when Mulan is grieving him and crying was one of the ONLY good things about this movie. It actually had sincere emotion. If I were telling the story, I would not have revealed so soon that he survived. I would have waited and had him come in and stop the wedding between Mulan and the prince like he did and then have Mushu redeem himself by marrying them. I think that would have been more powerful than immediately showing us that he was OK. It broke ALL the emotional tension of that scene. Basically, the only point to this story was to give Mulan's three friends love interests and have Mulan and the Princesses get married. We don't even know if this invasion is still going to happen and China is still doomed or if this instantaneous marriage stopped all that. lol.

    This movie had good _Ideas_ for morals and themes. Arranged marriages are a terrible thing, each person should be able to choose whom they want to marry. But what bothers me so much is that Mulan doesn't even seem to consider that in this case, the ramifictions of the Princesses marrying for love... is _war_ . Her entire country could go to War, if these girls don't marry the Qigong Princes!!! I'm sorry, but there is slightly more at stake then these womens happieness.
    I'm not saying that it is fair or right that the Princesses practically have to offer up their life and happieness for the good of the country. But Mulan doesn't seem to have any Plan B to "The princesses should marry for love". Okay, great, More power to them. How are we gonna form an Alliance with Quigong now????
    Clearly, her marrying the Prince was _not_ her original Plan B, so what did she _think_ would happen?
    "So sorry, Mr. QuiGong King, sir, I know we said Three Princesses, but you see they wanted to marry for love, and isn't that a beautiful thing? So, could you please form the Alliance without any sort of contract or Payment anyway?"
    Yeah, I don't think so.

    • @robinfa1477
      @robinfa1477 2 года назад +2

      I imagine Mulan was trying to think of a Plan B (maybe a trade deal of some sort, though that's hard to do without the Emperor's permission) but couldn't. For the most part, she was going along with it even though she didn't like it, probably for that reason. It was the princesses themselves that disobeyed the order. Mulan is happy for them and says she will talk to Shang about it. Maybe in hopes of coming up with some other plan? But that fails and she eventually takes the marriage to the prince in her own hands (which she was visibly thinking about for hours). That pretty much shows me that she did know the importance of the marriage and just didn't have any other safe options. Maybe they were able to work something out at the end somehow, but it was probably a risk for her and Shang. Something she was willing to take now that she knows he's alive, I guess.

  • @eternyti
    @eternyti 2 года назад +6

    Aside from all the script and character issues with this movie (and there are a LOT), I think what bothers me most is that everyone but Shang is basically willing to throw China and the Emperor under the bus for selfish reasons, just like Mushu was with Mulan's marriage. Obv no one expects the princesses to be happy about an arranged marriage but its not like its an unusual thing for this time period. And yet they're all willing to throw duty to the wind and let China go to war; for daughters of the Emperor and the literal hero of China to be okay with this is very much not in character...

    • @robinfa1477
      @robinfa1477 2 года назад +1

      The princesses were the ones okay with it. Mulan and Shang were not. Even though Mulan hated the idea of arranged marriages, she went along with it. She might have wanted to try getting the alliance a different way, but wasn't able to do that until after Shang "died." Taking the marriage in her own hands shows she knew the importance of the wedding.

    Hot take *this movie can only makes sense is if Shang **_did_** Die*
    @Welchy you actually pointed out sooo many stupid things about this movie but I'm gald that you pointed out that theirs zero consequences! HOW did Shang not die? Why give him a epic death scene just to undo it? How does Mushu not get punished AT ALL? Not by Shange Mulan or the ancestors - which makes no sense bc even if Shang broke the rules to keep him as guardian, Mushu can still get demoted due to his actions! The ancestors demoted Mushu in the last movie for his misguidance! But most importantly _How was the Mongal/China debacle resolved of theirs no marriage???_ The only way it Could've ended with no loose ends was Mulan Marrying the Prince, China and the Princess are protected, showcases Mulans self sacrifice and duty whilst adhering to her beliefs bc she has no reason to live for herself anymore now that Shangs gone which ultimately deals with Mushu aswell bc he has to live with the cost of his selfishness. *Basically this movie can only makes sense is if Shang **_did_** Die... WHICH IS TRASH*

    • @E3257.StudiosEverythingAwesome
      @E3257.StudiosEverythingAwesome 5 месяцев назад

      Bruh, he landed in water. (Shang) And yeah for a while I was waiting for Mushu to get punished, but I thought they did the emotional scene with him and Mulan well enough, and seeing that he really cares about her... seeing her forced into an arranged marriage was punishment enough bruv.
      And he saved her, whereas in the first movie Mushu literally had done nothing to win anyone's respect at all, and was an outcast to begin with no backup support.
      I think my point is that I don't really like how what peoples' main problem was "there were no consequences". You don't always have to make a "consequence" in somebody's death. That's lazy writing. VERY lazy writing. That's scrapping for edginess, which this movie simply wasn't. It would've ruined the whole tone, too. It was honestly a very wholesome movie that focused on relationship development and the individual characters themselves.
