Shan yu is one of my favourite Disney villain. I like that he was the only man in this cartoon who didn't react to the fact that Mulan was a woman (as I know bcs Huns have a women warriors) He did not humiliate her and did not give her any odds. She was his opponent and target, and without any pity or unnecessary words, he wanted to fight her like a warrior with warrior.
^This. Shan Yu saw only his enemy, and did not acknowledge gender, and he was ferocious. He didn't hold back. He considered her a warrior to defeat, not a gender to discriminate.
I never looked at it like that before but now that I do he’s my favorite villain officially, although he may be a villain he gained my respect for that
You’re so right. All he did was say, “The soldier from the mountains…” And he literally went from this 😲 to this 😡. Shan Yu really said gender equality, my enemy is my enemy. 😂😂😂
@poem2myself it wasn’t on the writers OR the director. the chinese were upset at disney’s depiction of their legendary figure with the singing and the talking animals. with the live-action, disney tried their best to appeal to their audience (so that the film could be promoted in china). li shang’s absence is due to the height of the metoo movement: the filmmakers thought it was inappropriate to include him in the film due to a lot of complaint from women about the sexual relationship between mulan and her commanding officer (unbalanced power dynamic), so they decided to split him into 2 people - commander tung, who becomes mulan’s mentor/father figure, and chen honghui, mulan’s new love interest who’s also a fellow soldier.
I will never forgive Disney for cutting Li Shang out of the live action version. He's awesome, and the chemistry between him and Mulan is so good. One of Disney's best love interests. Just so long as you avoid the direct to DVD sequel like the plague.
yeah seems like everyone is angry at Li Shang not being in the live action but i don't think any real human would have done him justice in the looks department
Just so you know, the person singing is actually different from the standard voice actress of Mulan. But Mulan's singing voice is performed by Lea Salonga who is an amazing Filipino singer and actress (and apparently Shay Mitchell's cousin??).
You have to realize that Shan Yu said "The Soldier form the Mountain" he didn't say "You were a WOMAN?!" He didn't GIVE AF! Hun Soldiers could be women too. All he saw was a Soldier, not a "woman". But he knows China doesn't use women in war so he didn't assume she took his victory because of their standards, not his own. So he readily and unquestioningly acknowledges her as a soldier. I'm not saying he respects people cause I mean he killed children too but yeah.
Nah I think everyone gets it. He like.... easily acknowledges and respects a military role regardless of gender- despite appearing to have little regard for human life in general

I remember either another comment or a post; but at 21:38 when Mushu launched the cannon, he might have unintentionally saved Shang's life. The Huns most likely already spotted the group since they were concealed by the mountains and the army was out in the open. For a successful ambush, you take out the leader first. Shang was in the lead with a red cape in the snow. The archer was probably getting the shot lined up with the others and waiting for the order when the cannon went off, startling both them and Shang. The archer had to take a quick shot when Shang starting moving. But still, only having a short time to readjust the archer missed Shang's head or heart by inches.
Can you react to "Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron"? It's a story about a strong, beautiful horse with a spirit that can never be broken. I cry every time i watch it! 😭💔🔥

25:38 his debt his repaid because he owed her his after she saved him, so he used that like a joker to spare her. A life for a life Also funnily enough Huns/Mongols were more feminist than Ancien China, women could injerit, own land, choose their husbands, demand a divorce and even fight, a lot of them were warriors if not war chiefs. That's why Shan Yu wasn't surprised that she was a woman, he didn't mock her gender once when taunting her later and didn't say "a woman ?" But just "the soldier from the mountains..." @@scottmoore7588 There was absolutely nothing romantic even before that, he only wanted to make a man out of them and when "he" succeed the training, he was proud that one of his men did that since he was desesperate of the level and then, as she succeeded in everything, as a general who trained his men, he was very proud and it's because she's literally the main character as well. But y'all always like to make everything sexual or romantic for no reason at all. Then, in THAT scene, it's only because he was grateful and proud that one of his men could save his army and his life literally and then he ended up being upset bcs a woman is forbidden and it was a disgrace for them to be saved by a woman, also because she lied about that. The world at this time was very sexist, even though he accepted Mulan as she is, was very grateful to her and then he fell in love with her when she was Mulan. Also, do you really think they'd create a bi character in a "kids" movie in 1998? He never had feelings when she was Ping, but only for Mulan. You confuse love with being grateful and proud of someone, not eveything is always about romance or having a sexual meaning you know.

Your Disney/Pixar reactions are everything! You have such a nice variety of videos (Saltburn, Percy Jackson, White Chicks, Mulan, who is doing it like you??). Loving your new channel too! 💖
Horror animation is something we need more of. apart from Coraline I don’t really know any🤔
20:58 greatest whiplash in Disney history
Awww Mulan is my absolute favorite Disney movie!!! Just perfection!!! ❤❤❤
I freaking adore Mulan, I still get chills every time they all bow to her at the end and the music swells up, UGH so good!
Been wanting to rewatch ‘Mulan’ so I’m gonna pretend we’re in the same room watching together watching this hehehe
Just rewatched the Happy Feet movies and ik you’d eat them up!!! The music and “choreography” is phenomenal
Can you react to "Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron"? It's a story about a strong, beautiful horse with a spirit that can never be broken. I cry every time i watch it! 😭💔🔥
Side note that Perfect Blue poster in The back is hard omg 🔥👏🏾💙🩵
this movie always gets me in my feels!!! im so happy you reacted to this!! love your channel 🙈🙈
Chu idk if people have told you before but you have such an ASMR-y voice, it’s just so relaxing to listen to you talk
🎵 LETS GET DOWN TO BUSINESS 🎵 the song gets me pumped 😂
Even when I was 10 and watched this movie, I was like "he thought Mulan was a man though.....hey wait a sec here......"
The I’ll make a man out of you sequence was my feminist awakening aged 8, and I still feel like I could pull a door off its hinges when I hear it 🔥
I train to "Make a Man out of you" 😂❤
I’ve been a subscriber for about a month or two and I absolutely adore you! You have helped me through the times when I was feeling down, you have a wonderful aura to you 💓
Disney did the live action dirty 😢 Shang wasn’t even in it like “ what was the reason? WHAT WAS THE REASON!!!??”🫴
Wasn't the reason they were trying to be closer to the real story (Mulan was a real woman), and Li Shang wasn't real?
The reason is way dummer than you can imagine. Apparently thanks to me2 campaign they deemed Shang as "inapproaprite" partner since he had higher rank than her. Yes, this was the actual stated reason.
Right?!
I was looking forward to the shirtless live-action scene, and Disney took that away from me! 😭 That live-action sucked!
@@RobinNicoagain Never mind they didn't even start dating after the movie ended XD. Sure, some snowflakes would make a fuss about it, but I have a feeling, they annoyed a lot more people by removing him XD.
@@leahdavis9434 than they should have respected the real story in the animation too also in the movie ver there’s magic and they changed the male villain to female. So I don’t think that’s a good enough reason, they were going for women empowerment and that’s fine🤷♀️
Awwwww i love that you watched this movie! This was really one of my favorites back in the days!
Definitely react to Hercules next, please! Also, if you're interested in learning more about the elements of Chinese culture in this movie, I'd recommend watching Xiran Jay Zhao's video commentary on the 1998 Mulan. They also did a commentary on the 2020 remake and read it for filth.
Your joy when watching this could be felt through the screen! You really cheered up my day! You mentioned suggesting other movies to react to near the end, and I want to suggest “The Goonies”. Not a horror movie, so no worries there 😅
Not gonna lie, I clicked on the video because of the title and stayed for the quality!
As a kid I thought Shang was so elegant and manly and thought he was my fave Disney 'Prince'. Me as a Bi adult is like nahhhh we like him for more than those reasons now 😂😂👀👀
Li Shang isn't bi, "Ping" saved his life and his army, so he's very grateful that a man he trained did such a feat, but when he learns that it was a woman in the end, it's a shame for him and his army to be saved by a woman, since women were forbidden to go to war. It had no romantic connotations when she was Ping, especially a movie in 1998, they'd never think of making a bi character.
Aah, you're such a sympathetic person! You seem like you'd be a great person to know.I really like your reactions :D
I would probably recommend that you try Perfect Blue, for a different kind of animated movie. It's Japanese and it's... a lot closer to the horror genre that you say you also like.
Mulan is one of my favourite Disney princess because of how relatable she is and because of how she's such a fighter, it always inspired me
Loved this reaction 💓
Oh my goodness! Mulan is one of my favorite films! ✨Thank you for this hilarious and joyous reaction👏🏾🤗
OMGGGG I LOVE YOU CHU! Mulan is my favvv, this reaction was sooo good! ❤
This song is so fire 17:36 I sing it to pump me up to this day when I saw it in theatres as a kid
This is one of the best disney animated films and princesses, amazing songs, beautiful animation, great jokes that aged beautifully too!!
Your videos always improve my mood so much!! Thank you fr fr❤ you’re a healer imo
The porridge mushu made for mulan is called congee and its delicious
I like how the Emperor just walked off Shan Yu‘s assassination attempt. Didn’t even blink.
i just gotta say, i discovered your channel a few months ago and have loved every video since. you emit such a beautiful energy and vibe I'm so so glad I've found you :) keep up the good work darling much love from all of us
I agree. The fact every Disney princess was a top tier soprano was 🤌🏼 Mulan Pocahontas Ariel Jasmine Aurora all the girls could sing down
A detail I love is that there are no songs between finding the burnt out village and the end credits (apart from a short burst of 'Be a Man' as they're climbing into the palace dressed as women), because they thought songs would undermine the more serious tone of the events from that point.
Early finally! I love this film, Li Shang is bi for sure.
Li Shang isn't bi, "Ping" saved his life and his army, so he's very grateful that a man he trained did such a feat, but when he learns that it was a woman in the end, it's a shame for him and his army to be saved by a woman, since women were forbidden to go to war, it's not for nothing that she pretended to be a man. It had no romantic connotations when she was Ping, especially a movie in 1998, they'd never think of making a bi character.
@@spec1512 Dude I know, it's a joke. You don't need to explain a Disney film to me simply because you're so offended at people commenting that a beloved animated character might be bi.
@@mimirants7935 I'm just explaining that it has nothing to do about being bi, but that being considerate or being prroud of someone doesn't mean being in love or sexually attracted
I LOVE how you can sense lgbt characters, the radar WORKS
btw; i dont know if you will see this, but i would love to see you reacting to "dead poets society" (1989)
i have no idea if youve watched it before, but its one of my favorites!

@@spec1512 omg dawg just leave it alone. let people headcanon in peace
Awww Mulan is one of my favorite Disney movies! It brings back SO many memories for me as a little kid! Glad to see you react to it!
You will definitely love Hercules.,looking forward to seeing your reaction.
hey chu💖...just came across your channel through this video and queen do i love it! Your commentary and accent over this absolute animated master piece is just ✨chef's kiss✨...keep up the slayy mate!
I would love to be your friend 😂 you’re such a joy to watch. Also absolutely react to part two
Chuu will LOVE the sequel because it's a great time to yell at mushu
saw the title and scream laughed you are never wrong!
I loved your reaction ❤ you should definitely watch Disney's Hercules next... It's so good
As a trans person I always loved Mulan because I related so much to not being able to be the "perfect" daughter. Also, the music in this movie is just stunning. I vote for both Mulan II and Hercules whenever you get the time. They're both so fun! And I Won't Say I'm in Love from Hercules is one of my favourite Disney songs ever.
(same re I won’t say I’m in love btw lol)
You seemed to enjoy the hell out of this movie and I thank you for sharing it with us
Mulans father: “It can’t be.” 😧
You: “It is.” 😌
Me: 🤣🤣🤣
I have so much love for this film, what an absolute classic! I listen to I’ll Make a Man Out of You more than I should admit to 🤣
It's so much fun to watch your reactions because you enjoy it so thoroughly, make funny jokes and still pay attention to the details 😂😂 I laughed so much while watching, thank you so much!
SCREAMING CRYING I'M SO EXCITED TO WATCH THIS REACTION!!!
Also, I wonder, have you watched Studio Ghibli films? Would love to see your reaction to them.
Hi Chu 💛 I love your reactions especially animation movies from the 90’s 💗
my heart is soaringgggg! so happy you watched this! It’s one of my top comfort movies :,) Would love to see how u like the second one
I think many can agree Shang is one of Disney's most attractive men. He's great XD
And so is this movie! Definitely one of my favorites from their 2D era 💙
25:38 his debt his repaid because he owed her his after she saved him, so he used that like a joker to spare her. A life for a life
Also funnily enough Huns/Mongols were more feminist than Ancien China, women could injerit, own land, choose their husbands, demand a divorce and even fight, a lot of them were warriors if not war chiefs. That's why Shan Yu wasn't surprised that she was a woman, he didn't mock her gender once when taunting her later and didn't say "a woman ?" But just "the soldier from the mountains..." To him, she was just a normal soldier
I just noticed you put perfect blue poster in the background yesss🙌💙
Mulan 2 isn't that bad, it's just not as strong as the first. Thats the case with most straight to DVD Disney sequels to be fair. I would still tune in if you decided to watch it! I love your animated reactions 😌
Chuuzus: _watches Li Shang only be interested in Mulan when she's pretending to be a man_
Chuuzus: "He's bi!" XD Sweetie that ain't bi, that's just gay. Bi is when you're interested in both men _and_ women.
Li Shang isn't bi nor gay, he's literally married to a woman. "Ping" saved his life and his army, so he's very grateful that a man he trained did such a feat, but when he learns that it was a woman in the end, it's a shame for him and his army to be saved by a woman, since women were forbidden to go to war, it's not for nothing that she pretended to be a man. It had no romantic connotations when she was Ping, especially a movie in 1998, they'd never think of making a bi character.
@@spec1512 Listen hon, say what you want, but I'm quite certain I remember him catching feelings for "Ping" even before she saved his life and his army.
@@scottmoore7588 There was absolutely nothing romantic even before that, he only wanted to make a man out of them and when "he" succeed the training, he was proud that one of his men did that since he was desesperate of the level and then, as she succeeded in everything, as a general who trained his men, he was very proud and it's because she's literally the main character as well.
@@spec1512 Girl, can I ask why exactly it matters if I or anyone else thinks Li Shang was gay or bi? Genuinely, what harm does that bring about? Is your life going to be ruined in some way by this? Why do you care so much if people think something about a movie that you disagree with? Even if you truly think they're wrong and you're right, so. Freaking. What? I genuinely don't understand why you seem so hellbent on arguing about this.
@@scottmoore7588 Just like when someone makes a mistake and you explain why it's a mistake? If you don't like the answer or anything then it's not my problem. You said he's gay, but he isn't nor being bi, it's as simple as that.
OMG I'm here early for the first time 😄💗💗
Im so happy you enjoyed this movie 😊 thank you, your reactions are the best 💅✨
Chuu you gotta watch Tarzan! Another classic w a great soundtrack
