I loved that towards the end, when Miguel is going to play "Remember Me" for Coco, his guitar hits his shoe, representing both of his family symbols: shoes and music.
Hector throughout the film doesn't wear any shoes. However in the end we see him walking across the bridge with now shoes indicating the family took him back in and made him shoes.
The thing about dementia and alzheimers is that music is stored in a separate part of the brain than their memories, so the only thing that would help Coco remember was her father's song for her and her family denying her the music kept her fading further and further from them. My mom had dementia and music was one of the only ways we were able to communicate with her later in her disease.
The woman who voiced Cinderella had Alzheimer's and her nurses would play her songs from Cinderella when she was having a bad day and it always helped.
It was said Ilene Woods, the original voice of Cinderella from the 1950 Disney movie forgot about her role, but was comforted when she heard A Dream Is A Wish. That could be true
I liked that Mama Imelda didn't forgive Hector right away for supposedly abandoning her and Coco. By the time of the epilogue, which takes place some time later, she's able to fully forgive him.
Yeah idk why she’s villainized just for not forgiving him right away. It makes sense why she wouldn’t. You can’t turn off a lifetime of hate and resentment even if logically, the person you thought was at fault actually wasn’t. It’s just human to need some time to process things
I live near a cemetery in Mexico, and when Día de los Muertos rolls in, the whole place transforms. The cemetery is overflowing with flowers, food, music and people. To some, it sounds creepy- but it is so special to have our loved ones who are no longer with us visit the world of the living. The "La Llorona" song is an old Mexican folklore song, and the version by Chavela Vargas is so romantic.
No surprise at all that this won the Academy Award for Animated Feature! The animation, music, story and the respect for the Mexican culture is just so amazing. And that "Remember Me" scene was so powerful. It is physically impossible not to cry at that scene.
13:37 yeah the dog is not just any dog, it’s a Xoloitzcuintle and the Aztecs believed this dogs guide us to the other side (or the Mictlan) when we die, that’s why Dante can see Miguel and cross the bridge
Chu saying “we thank God for life and we’re happy to be here” even though he didn’t accomplish everything really touched me. I needed that perspective heading into the new year. Thank you for all the joy and laughter you brought to us this year ❤️
Agreed, it really made me rethink my perspective. It’s hard not to feel down about underachieving. Although I’m not religious, I still am happy and grateful to be here
I was rewatching this movie recently and a sad detail I noticed before but never really appreciated was that Imelda has a gray streak in her hair and an older, raspy voice while Hector still has the voice of a young man since he died much earlier than her. It seems so obvious but it only recently fully hit me
Its that moment when the life comes back to the great grandmothers' eyes. As someone who was close with their grandparent's who suffered from dementia. Its breaks your heart when they come back to their senses for a moment.
So I am a Colombian girly and while Coco is based off Mexican cultures, the Latiné pride shines through. Encanto DESTROYED me though cause it IS about Colombians and has some scenes and themes that hit way too close to home, I still cannot watch it without crying (also BANGER songs! by Lin Manual Miranda). I highly recommend Encanto even though it's different from Coco. It definitely sings Colombia's praises and beauty as a culture and country ❤❤❤❤🇨🇴🇨🇴🇨🇴🇨🇴
This movie inspired me to make an ofrenda for my family for Dia de los Muertos. The tradition brings a lot of comfort to honoring those families members who are no longer with us. So glad you finally watched it! Great review Chu!
Chu condoning being disrespectful to your family and grave robbing in the name of pursuing your music dreams is killing me; you're so hilarious!! @Chuuzus Also watching this knowing he doesn't know the plot twist definitely added to the humour of this reaction!!
This movie is literally everything to me. Not long after my mother passed away in 2018, I met my beautiful mexican wife. We watched this for the first time together, and I couldn't help but cry my eyes out, but what she did was truly breathtaking for me. She held me in her arms and said she wanted to honour my mum on her ofrenda. That she wanted to do this for me was just mindblowing. I was in such a dark place in my life and Maria literally made my life so much brighter since the second i met her. Me and Maria are still going as strong as ever in our relationship. She is my whole universe and I am blessed every single day I get to wake beside her. When I proposed to her I played the song at the end of the movie "proud corazón" on the guitar and sang it to her in Spanish. She is my proud heart.
Lmao i forgive you. Thank you for finally watching ❤ this movie makes me sob everytime because i immediately think of our forgotten elders especially as African people. Colonialism took so much from us. I can't help but be sad about the fact that so many of us don't know our great grandparents because all that history is gone
Amazing reaction, I will never not cry over this movie, even while watching reactions I cry atleast twice 😭😭 the way it represents mexican culture so beautifully makes me proud and happy as a latino i just love everything abt this movie even the intro is 100%!!
Luca is a movie i would say is like Coco, but it would be great to see your reaction to the rest of the Twilight series. Big Hero 6 is another one that i remember being in the same style and having another great story.
This is probably thee best animated movie I’ve seen and I grew up on The Little Mermaid and Aladdin and such. I loved those but this one hit different. Kubo and the Two Strings is another one but I don’t see anyone ever react or mention that one. I wonder why 🤔 Great reaction as always! ❤

I love CoCo! It's so good. I laughed, I danced, I cried, I got mad because how you ban music...MUSIC! Music is life, baby. We don't do that. lol. Not to mention, they threw in a mystery element! And it's gorgeous. Side note: A Saltburn reaction would be gaggy! So though I know you're still thinking about it, I hope you do one.
Movie in a similar vein I would say is Over the Moon. Didn’t get the love it deserved when it came out, but is a beautiful story about grief. Especially when you read the background on the writer and why they wrote the story (which is heartbreaking)
This is one of my favorite movies, and i love it even more seeing your reaction. Thank you for sharing. My grandfather has Alzheimer's and cannot hold much of a conversation anymore. During a hospital stay, I sang Baptist hymns to him as eh used to be very active in the church. He lit up and sang along. The effect music has on the brain is fascinating.
If you want a really good Christmas movie to react to, even though it's after Christmas, I recommend Klaus. It was hand animated in 2D, but fed through a computer for the lighting and particle effects, which gives it a very unique feel, but it's gorgeous all the same. It's basically a Santa origin story, and it's very emotional. I honestly believe that the only reason it lost the Academy Award to Toy Story 4 is because TS4 had nostalgia behind it. But Klaus is honestly the better movie in my eyes.

I love your reviews and I love this movie. This video hits even harder given that the woman who plays Mama Coco just passed away. May she rest in peace 😢
i know this is like 5 months in but fun fact! dante isn't JUST a dog. dante is a xoloitzcuintli dog (xolo for short). they are dogs native to mexico and are said to be spirit guide dogs. in ancient times they would be buried with their owners to help guide them into the underworld. thats why dante was able to see miguel in his muerto form, he was quite literally guiding him. and since these dogs are intelligent and mischievous, we call our kids "escuincles" when they're being troublesome too. the more you know :)

That little girl that was in the land of the dead got me. She was so young 😢 I appreciate the realism though because sometimes that happens irl
Right! They’re husband and wife but she’s so much older than him because he died so much earlier
I'm guessing Imelda was in her 60s when she died. Hector was in his 20s when he died. And Coco outlived them both- she seems nearly 100 years old.
