I loved that towards the end, when Miguel is going to play "Remember Me" for Coco, his guitar hits his shoe, representing both of his family symbols: shoes and music.

The thing about dementia and alzheimers is that music is stored in a separate part of the brain than their memories, so the only thing that would help Coco remember was her father's song for her and her family denying her the music kept her fading further and further from them. My mom had dementia and music was one of the only ways we were able to communicate with her later in her disease.

I live near a cemetery in Mexico, and when Día de los Muertos rolls in, the whole place transforms. The cemetery is overflowing with flowers, food, music and people. To some, it sounds creepy- but it is so special to have our loved ones who are no longer with us visit the world of the living.
The "La Llorona" song is an old Mexican folklore song, and the version by Chavela Vargas is so romantic.

This movie is literally everything to me. Not long after my mother passed away in 2018, I met my beautiful mexican wife. We watched this for the first time together, and I couldn't help but cry my eyes out, but what she did was truly breathtaking for me. She held me in her arms and said she wanted to honour my mum on her ofrenda. That she wanted to do this for me was just mindblowing. I was in such a dark place in my life and Maria literally made my life so much brighter since the second i met her.
Me and Maria are still going as strong as ever in our relationship. She is my whole universe and I am blessed every single day I get to wake beside her.
When I proposed to her I played the song at the end of the movie "proud corazón" on the guitar and sang it to her in Spanish. She is my proud heart.

If you want a really good Christmas movie to react to, even though it's after Christmas, I recommend Klaus. It was hand animated in 2D, but fed through a computer for the lighting and particle effects, which gives it a very unique feel, but it's gorgeous all the same. It's basically a Santa origin story, and it's very emotional. I honestly believe that the only reason it lost the Academy Award to Toy Story 4 is because TS4 had nostalgia behind it. But Klaus is honestly the better movie in my eyes.

the way i think of this is if ernesto and hector were famous, and eventually just ernesto, that back then in their times it was very hard to be able to afford tvs and stuff, especially as a single mother, so she might've actually never seen him if she spent most of her time working for a living. or she could've assumed they broken up the mariachi and went to do his own thing too.

Mama Imelda is voiced by the actress who plays Cassie’s mom in euphoria, the literally gorgeous and sweet Alanna Ubach. She was also in Legally Blonde omfg She’s awesome and she can sing

Alanna Ubach voiced Mama Imelda and slayed down! I was shook when I found out, I had no idea she had Mexican heritage.

abuelita is mexican, latino *and* spanish. lol, I really wished disney would have kept all the spanish words, but put subtitles for them so my non spanish peaking friends could understand them.

I know that no one cares but, this movie is so personal bc this happened to my family. A famous guy stole my great grandpas song and became famous bc of it and no one remembered him, he even used to compose music for my grandma, like- he literally made a song for every daughter he had :”) anyways at least all my family remembers that my great grandpa Trini Ríos composed Noche No Te Vayas💖

i know this is like 5 months in but fun fact! dante isn't JUST a dog. dante is a xoloitzcuintli dog (xolo for short). they are dogs native to mexico and are said to be spirit guide dogs. in ancient times they would be buried with their owners to help guide them into the underworld. thats why dante was able to see miguel in his muerto form, he was quite literally guiding him. and since these dogs are intelligent and mischievous, we call our kids "escuincles" when they're being troublesome too. the more you know :)
