I was wrecked for a week when this man left us, I am serious. I cried more than I expected. I remember Mork & Mindy, Never missed an episode; and, I watched the Happy Days episodes in real time where we 1st met this comedic zeitgeist (LOL no PVR's back then) I fell in LUV with Robin then and his career brought me nothing but glee and laughter. The movies in which he played a serious actor sometimes tried me but OMG if you have not seen The Fisher King PLEASE go find it. This movie is so beautiful. I miss this wonderful spirit and I don't think i ever missed a talk show appearance by him. Ellen said it the best: "I don't prepare an interview for you, I just ask you one question and let you go" I'm sad his brain let him down at the end but I have nothing but gratitude for this magnificent talent we had the pleasure to witness. This was a comedian that should never be forgotten

But I only know he has admitted to liking cocaine. He was an ACTOR and comedian. The fact that so many people think he was a drugged out wacko when there’s a hundred videos of him walking off stage and "BING" he seems like and talks like your next door neighbor. I had the pleasure of being in that audience on Friday, December 18, 1987 for the most entertaining hour of my life, thanks to Robin. Also Bob Hope and Tony Bennett (promoting his paintings, no singing) were guests, and Doc Severinsen played a Christmas song with the band. Unforgettable.

I think whenever Robin Williams was on the Carson show. He was always on there the longest of any guest that was on that night. And you see why. He was a master of his craft. There will never be another Robin Williams.
I seem to recall Robin with Carson the night after Ferdinand Marcos fled the Philippines...a commercial break was coming up, but Robin was being Robin and Carson slipped a signal to NOT to go commercial and let it play out. A good call by Johnny....you do NOT break the flow of that kind of talent.
Yep. And Johnny just was in awe of Robin so he let him go to wherever he wanted to with his rapid fire comedy. Johnny hand picked his last guests on the last night of his show so you can imagine what they meant to each other. The other guest was Bette Midler. Johnny loved her too. I saw his last show on that last night and is wonderful. Both gone but definitely not forgotten.😪💔
Oh Robin - sadly, sadly missed. One of the funniest and most talented humans to ever walk The Earth in my opinion - almost impossible to keep from laughing when he was performing. A kind and generous soul as well, always so eager to get other people to laugh and feel better. I'm always touched by Steven Spielberg's story about the time when he was making Schindler's List. The work would depress him terribly, hanging over him like a giant black mass, so arrangements were made that, at the end of every shooting day, he'd spend an hour or so on the phone with his buddy Robin, who would work his ass off to cheer him up and make him laugh. Spielberg often credits Robin with helping him to get through it and get the movie made. Wherever he is now, I hope he was able to find some peace.
After watching this video I felt the urge to dig out, once again after many, _many_ years, the first stand up show of his that I ever saw. It was the Grammy Award Winning, "An Evening at The Met," recorded and released in 1986. Sometime in the dim and distant past of the early nineties, a school friend loaned me a VHS tape that he'd apparently recorded from a TV showing. I didn't know what to expect at all, except that all my buddies who'd borrowed the cassette before me assured me it would be one of the funniest things I ever saw. I'd seen Robin in a few movies at that point, as well as Mork and Mindy, so I knew who he was, knew he was funny and knew I liked him, but that had all mostly been someone else's material. I'd never heard him doing his own gags. I wasn't expecting the naughty words - that's why I'd thought nothing at all of watching the show while my mother and her mother were sitting on the other side of the room. I cannot remember my exact age, but it would have been somewhere in the early teens. Too young, in their eyes, to be hearing the TV yelling things like, "What the fuck am I doing here?" or, "Mickey Mouse to a three-year-old is a six foot fucking rat!" and especially not stuff like, "Here's a little warning sign if you have a cocaine problem: Number 1, if you come home to your house and there is no furniture and your cat's going, "I'm out of here, prick," WARNING! Number 2, if you have this dream, where you're doing cocaine in your sleep, and you can't fall asleep and doing cocaine in your sleep and can't fall asleep AND YOU WAKE UP and doing cocaine - BINGO! Number 3, if on your tax forms, it says "50,000 dollars for snacks," MAY DAY!" I had to watch the tape, after dark, on my little portable TV/VHS all in one, with headphones on and my duvet stretched over everything so nobody would see the light. I cried and cried with laughter. My guts hurt, my sides hurt, especially from trying desperately not to make a sound and give myself away. First time I'd seen *_ANYTHING_* like it. A special experience - it obviously stuck pretty damn hard in my mind 'cos even seeing it for the first time in at least a decade, I could recite practically the whole show as it played. I so wish he hadn't kept all his pain and sadness inside, and had talked to someone and gotten some help. It's awful to think of him locking it all in, letting it poison him because he thought everyone expected him to be funny all the time. He'll be missed, loved and admired for a long time to come.

Robin was one a of a kind human being, his kindness and humility do no justice with words. His loss was a kick to the gut for every person that knew him, generations of people just gutted in the heart. The hardest part was knowing that if someone so amazing, someone who could bring so much joy to others could lose the fight to live. A lot of others that try and conquer that deep sadness each day saw it as a loss of one of us. If you see someone you love become sad or increasingly isolated, just make sure that they are okay & check in with them, there are far too many bright lights going out and all of us can help each other shine together. The same year Robin Williams died he checked himself into a drug rehab clinic in Minnesota. When he tried to quit cocaine his brain could no longer produce natural dopamine, he got massively depressed, and he hung himself with his own belt. Hard drugs are illegal for a reason, and Robin Williams spent his entire adult life as a scofflaw supporting the murderous cocaine cartels by buying their product, which killed him in the end.

Robin is the only other guest I've seen that had to be Johnny's easiest interviews, while also being the most entertaining. Only other was Dangerfield.

Carolyn Worthington I appreciate your comment it was thoughtful of you. I had an uncle who battled depression for at least 35-40 years. After his grandkids finished college he ended his life at 70. I also had a nephew that decided life wasn't worth living at 20. Crosses my mind sometimes, but I have too much to live for ... i have a great family and I enjoy life too much. I am also eternally pissed at my relatives that did that for the pain they caused their families. But thanks again ... hate to air too much out on a open board, but it is what it is.

drServitis that is not true. Cocaine had the opposite effect on him. It calmed him down. Cocaine didn't make him smart. He had a photographic memory and was brilliant. Dementia from having Parkinson's disease caused him to commit suicide.
A lot of this was humor based on what was happening at that time that some may not get if they’re not old enough to remember events of ‘87; the stock market crash, corrupt televangelists Jim and Tammi Faye Bakker, etc... but Robin is on fire here as usual. I never watched that show again after he retired. I was a bit too young to be interested in the world news back then, so I didn't get most of this. Now though, it's fuckin hilarious.

After watching this video I felt the urge to dig out, once again after many, _many_ years, the first stand up show of his that I ever saw. It was the Grammy Award Winning, "An Evening at The Met," recorded and released in 1986.
Sometime in the dim and distant past of the early nineties, a school friend loaned me a VHS tape that he'd apparently recorded from a TV showing.
I didn't know what to expect at all, except that all my buddies who'd borrowed the cassette before me assured me it would be one of the funniest things I ever saw. I'd seen Robin in a few movies at that point, as well as Mork and Mindy, so I knew who he was, knew he was funny and knew I liked him, but that had all mostly been someone else's material. I'd never heard him doing his own gags.
I wasn't expecting the naughty words - that's why I'd thought nothing at all of watching the show while my mother and her mother were sitting on the other side of the room. I cannot remember my exact age, but it would have been somewhere in the early teens. Too young, in their eyes, to be hearing the TV yelling things like, "What the fuck am I doing here?" or, "Mickey Mouse to a three-year-old is a six foot fucking rat!" and especially not stuff like, "Here's a little warning sign if you have a cocaine problem: Number 1, if you come home to your house and there is no furniture and your cat's going, "I'm out of here, prick," WARNING! Number 2, if you have this dream, where you're doing cocaine in your sleep, and you can't fall asleep and doing cocaine in your sleep and can't fall asleep AND YOU WAKE UP and doing cocaine - BINGO! Number 3, if on your tax forms, it says "50,000 dollars for snacks," MAY DAY!"
I had to watch the tape, after dark, on my little portable TV/VHS all in one, with headphones on and my duvet stretched over everything so nobody would see the light.
I cried and cried with laughter. My guts hurt, my sides hurt, especially from trying desperately not to make a sound and give myself away.
First time I'd seen *_ANYTHING_* like it.
A special experience - it obviously stuck pretty damn hard in my mind 'cos even seeing it for the first time in at least a decade, I could recite practically the whole show as it played.
I so wish he hadn't kept all his pain and sadness inside, and had talked to someone and gotten some help.
It's awful to think of him locking it all in, letting it poison him because he thought everyone expected him to be funny all the time.
He'll be missed, loved and admired for a long time to come.

Nah, I know someone who was on Robins level, could talk continuously and never ran out of jokes. Absolutely hilarious. He was also a narcissist and later on became addicted to hard drugs and never recovered. These people are out there, they're just rare, and even more rarely on television.

Robin was one a of a kind human being, his kindness and humility do no justice with words. His loss was a kick to the gut for every person that knew him, generations of people just gutted in the heart. The hardest part was knowing that if someone so amazing, someone who could bring so much joy to others could lose the fight to live. A lot of others that try and conquer that deep sadness each day saw it as a loss of one of us. If you see someone you love become sad or increasingly isolated, just make sure that they are okay & check in with them, there are far too many bright lights going out and all of us can help each other shine together.

The same year Robin Williams died he checked himself into a drug rehab clinic in Minnesota. When he tried to quit cocaine his brain could no longer produce natural dopamine, he got massively depressed, and he hung himself with his own belt. Hard drugs are illegal for a reason, and Robin Williams spent his entire adult life as a scofflaw supporting the murderous cocaine cartels by buying their product, which killed him in the end.

Finally someone speaking the truth about Robin Williams. His manic delivery that he was loved for was completely a result of cocaine use. And cocaine probably caused his early death since it's proven that long term cocaine use destroys the brain's natural ability to produce dopamine and he got massively depressed when he tried to quit the drug.

Carolyn Worthington I appreciate your comment it was thoughtful of you. I had an uncle who battled depression for at least 35-40 years. After his grandkids finished college he ended his life at 70. I also had a nephew that decided life wasn't worth living at 20. Crosses my mind sometimes, but I have too much to live for ... i have a great family and I enjoy life too much. I am also eternally pissed at my relatives that did that for the pain they caused their families. But thanks again ... hate to air too much out on a open board, but it is what it is.

drServitis that is not true. Cocaine had the opposite effect on him. It calmed him down. Cocaine didn't make him smart. He had a photographic memory and was brilliant. Dementia from having Parkinson's disease caused him to commit suicide.

A lot of this was humor based on what was happening at that time that some may not get if they’re not old enough to remember events of ‘87; the stock market crash, corrupt televangelists Jim and Tammi Faye Bakker, etc... but Robin is on fire here as usual. I don’t know which is funnier... watching Robin, or watching Johnny’s reactions to his rapid fire humor. RIP to Robin, Johnny and Ed. Late night tv was never quite the same after Johnny retired.
