      Grace was already nearly 30 years old when Jefferson Airplane played Woodstock in 1969. She was amazing back then. Grace and Janis were the first two great female rockers, though Joplin was actually a blues singer.
      Things got tougher for Grace in the late 1970s through the 1980s. The pressure of being an aging rocker trying to keep up in a business that favors the young affected her ..as did her band changing into something unrecognizable from what it was when it began 20+ years earlier. Hip & idealistic San Francisco psychedelic band turned into an 80s corporate rock act by its management and record company…with Grace the only remaining original member.
      She didn’t handle any of this well. Fortunately she sobered up and finally followed the advice she’d given an earlier interview: “All rock-and-rollers over the age of 50 look stupid and should retire."
      Grace Slick was incredible during the 1960s and early 1970s. Many great female rock singers have pointed to Stevie Nicks as an influence. Stevie points to Grace as an influence. Imho Grace Slick should be put in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame a second time, this time by herself and getting a Musical Influence award.

    Don’t know if anybody else has heard this story. Apparently, back in the days when Grace fronted the original Jefferson Airplane, she used to wear one contact lens with a blackened star shape in/on it. It looked like her pupil was just a complete black star. Not sure if she’s short - sighted and had a clear contact lens for the other eye also. Grace Slick was/is one of the first “rock chicks”! I did read somewhere that Grace had a brother - in - law called Darby Slick who founded the band Great Society.

    • @SESteve

      She was in Great Society. It was her, her husband Jerry, his brother Darby and Peter Van Gelder (who is my father). They were the first band to play White Rabbit (written by Grace) and Somebody to Love (written by Darby). The band broke up when she left to join Jefferson Airplane because their lead singer quit after she had a baby.

      @@duffbaker9554 According to various sources, including Rolling Stone and other interviews, Grace Slick, the lead singer of Jefferson Airplane, suggested hiring the Hells Angels as security for the Altamont Free Concert in 1969. Slick had previously worked with the Hells Angels at a Jefferson Airplane concert in Golden Gate Park, where they provided security without incident. She believed that the Hells Angels would be able to effectively manage the crowd and keep the peace at Altamont.
      Paul Kantner’s Confirmation
      In an interview, Paul Kantner, Jefferson Airplane’s bassist and Slick’s partner, confirmed that Slick had suggested the Hells Angels as security for Altamont. Kantner stated that Slick had mentioned the Hells Angels’ previous experience working with the band and their ability to handle the crowd without incident.
      Jagger’s Agreement
      According to Slick, she and Jagger discussed the idea of hiring the Hells Angels as security, and Jagger agreed to the suggestion. Slick recalled that Jagger was hesitant at first but eventually agreed, thinking that the Hells Angels would be able to provide a more relaxed and peaceful atmosphere at the concert.

    It's people like Grace Slick that make me wish I had a time machine: I would go back to 1979 where the members of Jefferson Starship had just found their classic line-up and subsequently released their landmark album 'Freedom at Point Zero'. And I would have pleaded with them to 1-- Make 10 more albums just like it; and 2--- Not under any circumstances to ever let Grace back into the band. Worst thing they ever did, and it shows on all their '80s albums, especially the horriblation Letterman is holding. Yuck.

    • @jaycareaga9929
      @jaycareaga9929 15 дней назад +1

      Blame the band’s record company not Grace.
      Every band at the time was being pressured to have HITS which meant bringing in outside writers the 1980s hits were written by outside writers.

    • @clarkleach6733
      @clarkleach6733 15 дней назад

      @@jaycareaga9929 I know some of what you're saying is true, but it's also true that a number of top-notch new bands --- such as Cinderella, Poison, Guns'n'Roses, The Go-Gos, and even the renovated AC/DC with new singer Brian Johnson --- had hits with their own songs. But as far as Grace coming back into JS, that was something the members decided. And given her whole track record, especially her recent track record at the time, her return didn't keep them at the level they attained with 'Freedom At Point Zero.' Listen to the song 'Find Your Way Back' from 1980, and tell me if Grace's vocals or video appearance added anything to it. Mickey Thomas could have gotten someone from the audience of an all-night movie to do the backing vocals and no one would have missed Grace at all.
