Hello to my New Nurses... and maybe more experienced ones preparing for their NURSING INTERVIEW!
In my career spanning half a decade, I have both been the interviewee and interviewer!
And I can certainly give you a few nurse interview tips :)
First of all, being prepared for the nursing interview is key... but how do you prepare??
The first thing that you need to do is get comfortable talking about yourself. Which is harder than it sounds, especially with a strangers face staring back at you.
However, if you know this ahead of time, you can prepare a monologe that will show that you are confident and will be a competent nurse!
the nurse interview questions are usually really really hard, with tons of open end questions and also questions that make you talk about your weaknesses. You need to be honest here, talking about your failures sounds like you are saying that you are weak... but you have to focus on the valuable lesion learned and how you will improve yourself in the future!!
Nursing interview, I believe you will literally bomb if you do not prepare in at least one way or another...
Please watch the video and I give several examples of how you can prepare for your nurse interview!!
Also, keep in mind that practice makes perfect... it 's a good idea to apply like crazy to every single job that is being offered as your first nursing interview can be more of a learning experience!
I shared this information and more in my latest book called: New Nurse? How to Get, Keep and LOVE Your First Nursing Job. It is available on Amazon.com and you can see the link below :)
    I love you guys!!

When answering the question of upset customers/patients, always remember LAST! Listen, Apologise, Solve, Thank. It’s a really easy way to remember the step by steps. Listen to the complaint/issue, Apologise that this has happened, Solve the issue, Thank the customer/patient for bringing this to your attention. I use it almost everyday and it’s never failed me. Hope this wee tip helps!

I am one of the owners of OC Hospice here in Orange County and I just wanted to offer a little advice in regards to interviewing as a nurse.. be yourself, be genuine, yes it is important to know about my organization, people in Management interviewing you will appreciate it..but most of all show that you are in this industry because you truly care about patients and families. At the end of the day, stick to the basics, be yourself and show that you care and are willing to learn... its not brain surgery....God Bless. Good Luck to all of you!

thank you for your post. I am a current nursing student and have little to no experience in medical field as can or anything like that. How would you say that would impact getting hired or not? I have been a stay at home mom of 3 for the past few years and was focused on that and school.

I had my interview December 4, 2014. I gotta tell you, I'm so thankful for this video! I watched it many times just to get all the ideas shared settled in to my mind. This triggered many things, experiences, etc, that helped me answer the interview questions. I got the job! So whoever reads this, watch it and benefit from this video! It helped me relax and focus before, during, and after the interview. God bless!

If you want a nursing job... show it during the interview. Be flexible. Understand that you have to work holidays, weekends, overtime, if a nurse doesn't report to work that you have to stay over. Let the interviewer understand that you are aware of this. If you show responsibility and flexibility, it definitely helps.

UPDATE: Caroline I want to thank you very much for your support, advice, and best wishes towards me. Thanks to your video, I prepared myself as best as I could and was hired at a very prestigious hospital. The interview was actually 4 interviews in one day back to back by 4 different people 30 minutes each. (I didn't know!) A majority were "Give me an example" "Tell me a time when....." And I also used EVERYTHING you said in this video. You're a wonderful person and belong in nursing! THANKS!

This advice is top notch. Your communication is so clear and well thought out. You know some really good answers to interview questions that I would have never even thought of. In my past interviews unrelated to nursing I thought people just went in and answered from the top of their heads. Actually studying possible things they might ask me and planning what I'm going to say would help tremendously. Thanks EmpoweRN!

I have to come back to this video and thank you. One year ago, I remember using this video to prepare for nursing interviews. I aced my first interview and was hired shortly after. I used this and googled various questions. I typed my answers out and rehearsed in front of the mirror and with my friends. It worked, I felt so much more confident and prepared for my interviews and could tell I impressed the interviewees. I also made sure to leave a thank you note afterwards with their names so that they remembered me. Thanks again!

This video is awesome! I am an experienced nurse but had to take a year off for my daughter who has some medical issues. Anyway, I applied to a few places and got called for an interview. I quickly realized that though I have always gotten hired, I am extremely nervous! It's been 2+ years since my last interview. Thank you so so much Caroline for this video!! My friend recommended this video before my first big girl interview. I had the phone interview with HR first. I wrote down some possible questions they might ask. After I watched this video, I added much more and I practiced once. I certainly did well on it because the HR immediately scheduled me for the second interview with the ED manager after almost 40 minutes talk with me. Before my second interview, I watched your video a few more times, which seriously made me so confident and calm. I especially love your idea about taking time to think before answer questions. I totally did that during my second interview.
And I just got the ED job offer two days ago. Huge thanks to you!!

This video is helpful. I just passed my CNA state test. I close up with fear when being interview. My last few jobs I didn't really have an interview. Of course they were dead end jobs. I would like to have more education. work on my way up to LPN. I really care about taking care of sick people. It's about listening, communication, watching body language people don't always like to complain. or admit to being to being sick. For example when I was doing clinicals. I answered call light to gentleman whom said he was hungray. I explained to him snacks would be past in about ten minutes, and ask if he could wait. He explained that he always got dry sandwich. That he would like mayo for his sandwich. I told him that I would see what I could do. I let his aid know because I would leave when snacks where past. She stated that dietary don't send mayo. I ask why she stated I guess it might spoil. So I walked down to dietary and told them that the gentleman would like mayo for his sandwich. Dietary Aid said I wondered why he ask for sandwich but never ate it. The next evening I saw he got mayo with his sandwich. That evening about the same time his light came on. I answered he stated he wanted to thank the student that got him mayo for his sandwich, then he looked at me and said it was you I said yes. You are welcome. I followed up with his Aid and dietary aid. To make sure he got his mayo. Had I not watched your video I would not have thought about the gentleman and the mayo. How that could be important for a job interview. Thank you.
    Thank you again,
    Macel Given CNA

Hi, I wanted to thank you for making such an awesome video. I am a non-traditional nursing student and I applied for the VALOR Program at the local VA hospital. I had to meet with my program director prior to going to the interview at the VA and she told me I did not convince her and that she would not have picked me. The irony is I used to hire employees as a manager for a local staffing agency 8 years ago, so I thought I knew the techniques. Needless to say I was super discouraged after my meeting with her. I had my interview on this week at the VA and I watched your video the night before and the morning of my interview. There were 3 slots available, 7 candidates applied and I was picked as a candidate for the job. Your video truly opened my eyes and gave me the confidence to nail my interview. Thank you a million times!!!!!!! P.S. Sorry about the lengthy message.

    Caroline,
All I can say is WOW! I purchased and read your book, "New Nurse? How to Get, Keep & LOVE Your First Job! What an awesome book. I was enjoying it sooo much that I could hardly put it down and ended up finishing it in 2 days lol. The insight you share is phenomenal. It NOT ONLY applies to nursing, but to ALL aspects of life in general. This is what I enjoyed most. Hats off to you!
Something I would like your expertise on is behavioral questions during interviews, such as "What will you do when your unit is short-staffed, and you are required to give a treatment that you have never done before?" What type of assistance and support will you need in order to get up to speed?" "What special skills and attitudes do you bring to the table that will enable you to carry your own weight on the unit?"
    Best Regards,
    Elcia

I just need to say this. Im from manila philippines. I got 4 people who interviewed me since monday september 30. Just a lil background. I graduated way back 2012 with no nursing experience job. I did work in a call center since it was discouraging that time since filipino nurses had to pay just to work in a hospital but its different this time. We now get paid! This pushed me to resign from my 7 year call center job and this tips helped me. 👍👍👍Just had my final interview earlier with the chief nurse and i was advised to go back friday for my job offer. ❤❤❤

Caroline, I'm due to finish my nursing degree in November and just had my first interview for a graduate nurse position on Tuesday. I just wanted you to know that this video was extremely helpful to me and with your advice I got the job!! I'm so pleased as I'm in Australia and due to massive health cuts 95% of new grads go with out jobs - and that is unfortunately no exaggeration. I watched your NCLEX video and there were some great tips, I plan on incorporating in the small amount of time I have left. Also, your Nursing Interview video was awesome, I am a very bad interviewer, so hopefully your tips will help once I get my RN. Thank you very much for creating these videos I have learned a lot, however now it's time to put in some studying. Thank you again!

Hi Caroline! I recently got called for an interview as a night nurse on the telemetry unit of a large hospital in my area. While preparing for my interview, I came across your video on RUclips. I can't thank you enough for that amount of confidence it gave me. I literally typed out all the sample questions and response you gave me, and then modified the answers based on my work and life experiences. While i knew these exact questions might not be the exact ones I get asked, I still felt prepared knowing that I had some type of solid responses for loosely similar questions. I had the interview earlier this afternoon, and I have to say I did get asked a handful of similar questions as the ones you gave us. For example, "tell me about yourself" and "tell me about a difficult situation you faced in your clinical rotations or on the job and how you dealt with it." Oh het questions I did get asked (and I'm going to include these so that perhaps others can be prepared for them if they get asked) are "how do you handle a CNA or PCA who is challenging you or not listening to what you are saying" and "tell me what the head to toe assessment means to you." That basic answers to these questions are (and hopefully you can offer some more insight on this) are to remind the CNA/PCA that the patient is the focus and that it is important that they take care of a priority task first otherwise the patient needs won't be met. Also, you can suggest that if there are other lesser tasks to be done, you can address them together. Regarding the head to toe assessment question, the answer should be based around the idea that performing a head to toe question allows you to get a better picture of your patient as a whole and then be able to use that information to better prioritize and plan what needs to be done for that patient and then further be able to implement and evaluate those things (think ADPIE).
Anyway, I hope my feedback was as helpful as all of your videos have been. Thanks again!! :)
Ps- I ended my interview with the closing statement you suggested and it put a huge smile in the nurse managers face. Fingers crossed!!

***** Just wanted to give an update, I got the offer!! Yay! I also have had other interviews as well and one of them is my ideal field. Hoping I can get several offers and pick the best one for me. I can't thank you enough, there was a time that I felt hopeless finding another job after relocating, but I saw your video and adapted what I've learned during my interviews.
Just wanted to give a few tips as well, like this video, be prepared, research on the company you are applying for and try to give examples, i.e., if asked how do you provide the best care for your patient? Be specific, think back to nursing school or a previous job experience where you've helped someone.
Also if possible, try to make small talk to establish rapport and get to know them in a more personal level, this way they can see if you're someone who they can work with, also it's a chance for them to see that you have a great personality and a pleasure to work with :)

I really wish I had seen this video sooner. I'm a nervous wreck during interviews. Fortunately, I did get offered the job and I start next month. The one and only thing I did to prep for my interview last week was research the hospital. When I was asked about how I handled a conflict between coworkers I did say that Fortunately, I have not yet encountered any conflicts yet with any of my coworkers(which really is the truth). I just took deep breaths and answered the questions as best I could. Thank you for your video. I know It will be helpful in the future.

Hi I just want to say Thank You!!!! I actually bought your book the day before I got the call for an interview and even though I didn't receive your book until after the interview watching this youtube video gave me Lot of ideas on how to ace the interview. Before watching this video I didn't think I would even get a job offer since I was a new grad that graduated outside the US. My resume wasn't so great and I graduated in 2012. However i nailed the interview and it doesn't matter really where you come from, or how your GPA was, as long as you present yourself well during the interview and always find yourself searching for opportunities to learn, you WILL get the job. Have positive thoughts, there is no reason why to doubt yourself that you won't get the job. Now I am a Med Surg Nurse at a hospital that is too good to be true for someone like me. Now I will do my best to always be hardworking and grateful for the opportunity to work at such a prestigious hospital. Thank you once again and I finished reading your book and it was wonderful I can't wait for your new books to be published.

Excellent Interview tips & Video. To the person who complained that Breaks & Lunch were mentioned in interview here. I am not an RN or nurse student, but have experienced & witnessed BAD nursing from obvious burnt out nurses. I expect my nurses & doctors to take care of themselves with rest & breaks, not give all of themselves so they have nothing left to give. I am researching medical jobs for career switch.

31 years old and nurse of five years. Great video. You have some awesome tips. I actually am viewing it now in preparation of an interview this morning! What a great idea for a book. You could seriously market that to nursing schools bookstores across the country. $$$ I did noticed there were no males on your cover. What gives? You are not helping break the stereotype!

This is amazing!! I used some of these techniques for my first nursing interview and before I made it to my car I had an email for a second interview and then a job offer. Now I am getting a response from my dream job and I hope that they give me an offer. I don't want job number 1 to know I am entertaining the hope of an offer from the second place so I am hoping that I can stall this week. I really want job number 2. Thanks for helping the rest of us dreamers!!
