Always ALWAYS wear hair up! Infection control (down- it can get in wounds, fluids yuck!) I totally agree with the earrings. You have to leave the rings at home too. It can rip gloves and get germs in it. Nail polish is a no-no. Infection control. Esp no gel nail polish. I am an instructor in a college of nursing

I thought this was cute. I have been an RN for awhile now. I have worked at various hospitals due to traveling. I was actually told at one of the for-profit hospitals I worked at that the nurses are expected to have immaculate makeup and hair. They really cared about presentation. The whole nail polish thing isn't usually a policy; it's more about gel polish and acrylic nails. The Joint Commission actually stopped by for the yearly survey a few weeks ago. They never asked about a nail polish policy. They only asked about acrylic nails. As long as you don't wear cracked nail polish or gel polish, it tends to not be as huge of an issue. As far as hair, not every hospital has a policy. Some require hair off the shoulders at all times. Others will say to have it up during procedures. Not everything in the real world works the same as what you learned in school. Yes, infection control is huge. Yet if you use common sense, you will be fine. This sweet nurse did a great job on this video. It doesn't matter if your school/whatever would agree with her style or routine. The hospitals where she works are clearly fine with it.
Sometimes, there is no better medicine than a pretty nurse :)
It's kinda intereseting how the look on hygien differs from country to country. In sweden we are taught early in our education that it is not allowed to use rings, watches, bracelets, or nailpolish because of the risk of transfering microbes. Bacterias/viruses love warm spaces which these things provides. You can't have long nails either or your hair let down for the same reason. Bringing home your scrubs is unthinkable. Why would you want to bring home clothes that have been exposed to different disesases to your family? We can't even leave the hospital area in our scrubs to buy pizza...
I am a nurse in Austria and we have the same restrictions. I always wonderd about the scrubs too when watching american hospitalshows.
I’m an occupational therapist in the UK and it’s the same here- hair must be up, no jewellery except for plain stud earrings, nails must be kept short, clean and free from polish. It’s all for infection control purposes.
Thank you for this video. I think what people forget is that you're not at work primping yourself up to look cute before entering every room. You're preparing yourself in the best way possible before going in to work so that you not only feel confident, but also look like you care about yourself. I'm still in nursing school and I put on makeup before clinicals and make sure my hair looks good. I recently went to clinical and one of the techs was wearing an old scrub top that was ripped on the side, wrinkled scrub pants, hair like she just woke up and her face looked like she was up all night drinking. I'm sorry, but if I was a patient, I would not want her touching me. Not saying that if you do not wear makeup or do your hair you look like trash, what I'm saying is that looking professional and like you actually enjoy your job is important. Patients feel better when their nurses look like they want to be there, not when they look like they're so tired that they could make medication errors etc. Making sure you're put together before work shows that you care about yourself and about looking prepared. I appreciate your video and love that you have videos about other stuff than just educational things. I know some people think this is superficial but just as you would dress professionally for a corporate job, it is just as important to look professional in healthcare as well.

Most hospitals I have worked at do not allow any nail polish and absolutely no artificial nails. Polish can chip and get into wounds and whatnot, so it is mostly not allowed. And artificial nails are like Petri dishes for bacteria to grow. Ew.

I never wear make up and don't wear it on my days off but sometimes I wear a little bit to work. I know it makes me look better and patients and their family's like to trust a pretty nurse more than a haggard nurse. However there was a week where I didn't wear make up at all. A patient asked me if I was wearing make up and I told him no. Then he said I was very very pretty. So I don't worry about so much anymore. And I avoid nailpolish.
Hi! I just stumbled upon your channel and I really like it. I always put 'my face' on before work. I see so many people who come in bare face and I think that's great, but I'm glad to hear from someone who shares my philosophy. It is like my zen 15 min in the morning getting ready before going in.

I think people are just commenting before even watching the full video. Yeah OK nail varnish is a no no because of the risk of infection. But come on guys the girl is answering a comment request and merely trying to make herself seem a bit more confident at her work place. Don't bash her for it. I actually thought her hair is really pretty and another way of looking at it is if you don't make yourself presentable its not providing a professional image. Dress for the job you want applies to nursing cause you want to look presentable. No one ever said it was a beauty contest.

I completely agree! a lot of people think that if you wear makeup and style your hair, you are doing it to impress others. but i believe its all just for yourself, your confidence, happiness, and even energy!
I agree! Love this video honey. I'm a hair and make-up kind of girl as well. I personally feel if you feel good, your patients will feel good. I'm not the natural beauty like many other women are haha, so I put some effort into it.

I like your video, its totally important to look good at work. PERIOD. I think some people just give up after a point, or never put much effort in their appearance to begin with. It's important to find a balance between safety, what is work appropriate and professional while letting your personality shine through.
You answered so many things that i was worried about. I love wearing nail polish and makeup and I wasnt sure if I would be allowed to wear them. I love your videos you have been so helpful. I really want to be a nurse and help people and you just make it sound so much more exciting. Thanks for all your help :)

I agree with you regarding makeup and hair! Question…..How long does it take for you to get ready for work in the morning (make up included)? Just wondering because I know we all have to get up for work pretty early, if you're working in the hospital.

I certainly agree that taking time to ensure you look good and presentable for work is important! Like you, I take pride in how I wear my hair at work and in my make up however in NZ we must wear our hair up and we have to have short nails with no polish... infection control.... but yes, we must look professional and feel good about ourselves.

A trend I’m seeing today is nurses wearing overly, overly tight scrubs. There are a lot of scrub brands too now that I think are almost too “hey, look at me” To each his own, but scrubs a size too small or scrubs that obviously show every curve you have are not professional. And then you have nurses who bought 3 sets of scrubs 20 years ago, and they are still wearing them. Usually not ironed. These reasons are why I think uniforms aren’t such a bad idea. If I were a patient, I am not sure I’d feel too confident with a nurse going for the sex kitten look, or a nurse who looked sloppy. Also seeing lots of dangly earrings, sloppy hair, and artificial nails (ugh). Some places I guess don’t have rules about the fake nails, which is hard to believe, when it’s been proven that they harbor way too many germs. I think painted nails are ok, but again, because of germs, nails should be on the shorter side.
I liked this video. I work in home health as a private duty nurse and we don't have strict policies on makeup,hair ect. We use to be able to wear street clothes but now we have to wear uniforms I agree somewhat with some people on here about hair/makeup but some of them just need to get over themselves I've been a nurse 6 years LVN,RN and one thing I learned from one of my nursing instructors who had a doctorate and was military is that it doesn't matter how you dress as long as your presentable what matters is how you nurse. I personally come to work plain jane 95% of the time but either way I think if you want to look nice at work its your buisness. Thanks for sharing.

It's so true I always make an effort when I'm getting ready for work helps my confident and you look more professional neat and well kept for your patient you can still look good with minimal make up hair up n studs so it's good to make effort u look lovely by the way leery good video love you xx

Where I go to school, you would be told to wash your face [we can only have understated/nondistracting/neutral makeup]. Hair up is a requirement at my school and my healthcare job, but the amt of hair spray you have would cause issues. I have had to pick up people another person's assignment at work because the patient could not tolerate the smell of their shampoo/hair spray. At the school and the healthcare facility, we are NOT allowed any form of nail polish. Also consider, how does making yourself look like a barbie doll help a patient feel better who is not allowed to shower/is severely ill/can't access make up of their own end up making them feel better?
But you have to keep in mind that part of this is confidence. If you feel confident, you can provide better service and seem more approachable. Sure your ability to perform may not change much, but at least you feel good doing it.
Dina's correct. if you're confident, your performance is enhanced.
therefore.. better patient care.
and to me, if I had a nurse that cared for her appearance.. that would give me the idea that she cares for herself.. and if she cares for herself... she cares for me.

hi! i really want to be a nurse but i have always bit my nails ever since i was a kid. i've stopped for a while now and all of them except both my index fingers are fine. those two have now turned dark and are deformed. they're still growing (i think) but i don't think the darkness is going away. do you have any solutions? are there operations i could do to fix them? :(

My hair is long and styled almost identical to your, How do you keep it up in a clip all day? My hair falls down constantly when wearing a clip. I have tried everyone on the market, I think! So I end up with a plain-jane pony tail. But I do always have a clip with me for those moments I really need my hair up and out of the way. You have excellent nursing professionalism and that is such a rare thing these days. Nail polish and ear rings-Right On!!!!

Great video! 😀How about shoes? There are these really unattractive black shoes that look like made for clowns. My coworker had them and after I wore them I can't stop wearing them. They were very affordable and very comfortable. Would you instead suggest sticking to sneakers or are these ugly but super comfortable shoes ok in your opinion?
found this very intresting! the UK have different rules on dress code and uniform policy etc. very interesting to see how different places work. in a nutshell the rules here in the UK are: your uniform is provided

it says these are the rules for professional image and for infection controll.
It's funny how I was put on the spot at my very first job years ago for not wearing makeup at all. I was told that I looked like I was not putting effort into looking presentable to work. My hair was always in a bun and just no makeup at all. I love makeup I'm just too lazy to get up earlier.

Do you have any recommendations for foundations that last all day? When I work 12-16 hour shifts, my face is always so oily. I splash my face with water throughout the days to try to control it but sometimes there's no time to run to the bathroom to do so.
+xoladiihoneyxo I have oily skin and I run into the same problem. I use any foundation that works with my skin, but I spray makeup setting spray when I finish my make-up, and it usually stays the whole shift. The best brand I have tried is Urban Decay- it's just really pricey. Both of the Nyx setting sprays work just as good and are far more affordable.
I have natural oily skin. Just recently, I started using face primer after my moisturizer. Neutrogena has a oil control face primer. LOVE IT! Makes a matte finish. Then I put a light liquid foundation on because I set it with a light dusting of foundation powder too. I also carry Neutrogena's oil control powder with me. It has no color. Just controls the oil. When you start to see oiliness dust it on and it's good for a couple hours. For my 16 hour shifts, this combos work awesome! sounds like quite a bit but you don't have to use a lot! I swear by primers though!
in aus we are not allowed nail polish at all 😢😢😢
In germany it's mandatory for nurses to wear their hair up no jewlery and no nail polish bc of hygiene
It's the same here in Sweden. My boss even has a bottle of remover in her office! Quite creepy. But it's all for hygiene. It's sad though, I have quite a collection of polishes at home :(
tamousha i think it's for the best. yeah it sucks to wear it only on your day off.

How do you do that hairstyle? I have long hair so I need to keep it out of the way when I volunteer, except for maybe that curl on the side.
With this one, I curl my hair, spray a little hairspray & then twist it up with a clip ;)
I would say my hair is medium length... but I know a lot of nurses with long pretty hair ;)

Honestly I stopped getting manicures and polishing my own nails. It's so harsh on my small weak brittle little nails. So only having aesthetic nails on my days off or limited to a more conservative nail I wouldn't mind. I actually only do my nails/see a manicurist on special occasions. It's more maintenance than it's worth to me. Plus it's just nice to see what is going on behind your nails. Nails can give you insights to health (if what I read was correct back in my cosmetology days); poor circulation, fungus, trauma/injury, etc.

Nail polish, I would never wear it to work as it harbours bacteria and fungus that can be transmitted to your patients. Several neonatal deaths occurred in 2000 in Oklahoma that were traced to Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Epidemiologists traced this bacteria to long nails on the nurses that were looking after these neonates and recommendations were made that for nurses working with immune compromised patients (which really is all patients) nails should be kept short, no polish and no fake nails. So we don"t wear it at all at work and have a policy regarding it. That and fanatical handwashing...haha...are probably the best for patients. Thanks for your vids, I'm switching from ICU to HD and your med reviews are great...dang there is always stuff to learn...:)

We're not allowed to have our hair down at all in most hospitals! It goes against hospital policy! makes it easy to choose what to do in the morning! haha
Honestly working 12 hr shifts I tried to do the make up and cute hair... But no nail polish allowed, hair has to be pulled back completely out of the face. I'm usually fast paced throughout the shift, cleaning bodily fluids, shoving lunch in a matter of minutes like 15 bending kneeling... By the time it's over I'm dragging butt to the house to sleep and do it all over again. 4 out of 7 days a week I think if I could go back in time I'd do over my career choice I miss looking pretty but it is what it is ✌
Good tips, but there's a difference between "a little hairspray" and...well, making your hair stiff and crunchy.

It's quite different for the UK! We have to wear our hair up! Our hair cannot be touching our uniform either. Hair like yours would be fine though. We are only aloud to wear studded earrings and plain wedding band, no other jewelry. Also nail vanish is a big no no and we have to have our nails cut short. All of this is because of Infection Control.
Hey I was wondering how many petite (short) nurses you have known?, this feels odd to ask, but I am beginning my practical nursing training in September and one of my insecurities I guess is being taken seriously as I also look fairly younger then my actual age of 24. I just keep telling myself to stay confident and work hard. Anyway I just wanted to let you know I enjoy your videos :) thanks!

i do picc lines, so i don't wear my wedding ring or engagement ring to work. i just got tired of taking it off and putting it in my pocket and worrying about losing it. sterile gloves...... my hair is short, as i would rather sleep in the morning than do my hair. plus, the caps i have to wear while placing a picc mess it up anyway. i do wear makeup, most days. it's bad enough i practically wear pajamas to work, i should make an effort to not look like i don't care.

I love make up as much as I love nursing but I’m trying to find a brand that’s non-cruelty, comogenic (however you spell it lol), because I have sensitive skin.

i am a senior in high school this year, and i just recently decide that i wanted to become a nurse in labor and delivery. im not sure how exactly to go about this career. i want to go to an on campus university, but im not sure how man colleges have nursing majors. so if anyone has any advice that could help me it would be much appreciated :)
in sweden, anyone working as a nurce or any kind o doctors proffession may not ware nailpolish, hair up when working and very Little makeup prefferebly nothing, and lastly no or very Little perfume

Most places here in massachusetts require that you do wear your hair up and NO nail polish or false or long nails due to bacteria. it's not clean or hygienic

yes absolutely NO dangly earrings or necklaces but some people get away with it personally i dont wear it because i work with patients who grab,pull,hit etc... so i dont wear anything loose
I wouldn't either... I'm a bit of an avid rule followed and I wouldn't want jewellery/nail polish to harm a patient or myself! also we have strict senior charge nurses/heads of nursing who could pull you on any uniform/dress code breach

I am in the USA :) this particular scub top had buttons, but a lot of them don't, just depends on the style. Most hospitals here in the USA (the ones I have worked in anyways) do let us choose our style, but mandate a particular color :)

Older peoples adore half moon (Dita von Tess ) nails because they're 40's class so....
Good video,however at most hospitals you can't have your hair in your face like that. Hair must be pulled back. Also your makeup doesn't look " light". Sorry.
im work in canada and most places absolutely Nothing on the nails.....natural and short.....no polish........too many germs they say ...and chips of polish can flake off regardless if we wear gloves...we have to go natural

At all the facilities I've worked out you are not allowed to wear any kind of nail polish because bacteria love to hang out there. I would probably ask for a different nurse if she had nail polish. I saw a video posted of a nurse with fake nails and nail polish taking care of a newborn. Yuck!!

So interesting, at all the facilities that I worked at, we were allowed to wear nail polish, as long as it was not cracked.
But acrylic and gel were not allowed...
I guess it is always better to not have anything though... :)

ThePauligirl48 Clearly the eat your young type. The NP after your name doesn't make your comment constructive. Would you write "a hot mess" on an employee improvement plan? This is an eager, energetic, young woman that clearly LOVES her profession, is completely dedicated, and is taking the time out of her busy life to share her experiences and help others. I think she deserves some respectful feedback as a professional courtesy from one HCP to another. With that being said, she was asked to explain her own personal routine, and that is what she did in a very well done and detailed way. She explained that this is what she does to feel her best, so she can perform at her best. Nobody said it was a beauty contest, she said she loves makeup and it makes her feel good. I hope there is something in your routine that makes you feel ready to start your day, because any professional would emphasis the importance of this step in a morning routine. I think she was spot on when she said you should put time and energy into your appearance. I would say that the eyeliner she is wearing seems a bit harsh, maybe a brown, or shadow liner would help tone it down. The frosted lipstick will last an entire.... 30 minutes maybe, she's lucky if it lasts after report between breakfast/coffee/tea/water... so that doesn't seem to be a concern. Nail polish can be debated, I don't see what the big issue is with a light pale pink, well kept manicure with short nails. I do agree with the infection control point. As a seasoned NP, I would encourage you to give more productive feedback and advice (I did also read your comment above). Comments like these give us the "bully" image, which seems to be a hot topic in nursing practice today. You are in a position to educate and guide a younger generation of nurses, and I'm sure your opinions are highly valued, which is why I think it is important to use your words wisely. Burnout rates are high enough as it is, and one of the biggest reasons is the cattiness in the nursing field. I loved your definition of beauty, and completely agree... but a nurse that wears makeup, even as much as she does, still maintains all of the elements that you described.
