I think having your own equipment is great, but local hospital policy and the legal implications must be taken into account. After all, if for example your oximeter says your patients sats are fine, but due to a technical fault your equipment gives you a false reading and the unfortunate happen to your patient, this might get you into a bit of trouble. I believe its safer to always use hospital equipment as it's always checked, calibrated and you can rely on them (even if there not checked, at least to a degree the onus is on the hospital and not you). I hope you don't mind me posting my opinion. I think your channel is great and please keep up the great work. Many thanks, Mickey.

Ha! I'm not the only traveling RN who carries a diaper bag! They're truly brilliant. I work thirds and often am called to patient homes. Sometimes I'm forced to park a bit of a distance away so I also have a can of pepper spray handy in my bag. Thanks for your video!

I'm glad I'm not the only one who obey packs my nursing bag, I also have tons of gloves, my drug book, tons of pens esp red, sanitary wipes, snacks, my nursing cheatsheet book, a small calculator and a bp cuff just in case.
    Thanks for sharing this.

I'm specifically going to look for that bag on the website. Your teaching points are just amazing and as a nursing student right now, I feel like I'm learning even more in addition to being at school. Please keep these videos coming. Also, if you haven't already done so, can you make a video for new nurse's about conquering your fears and dealing with your nerves, when it comes to being a new nurse, and how to deal with your coworkers, when you start off as an CNA , transitioning to a nurse. Thank you!!!

Hi there! Love the videos! -- I am a new nurse and I find them very helpful! I do have one suggestion -- PLEASE don't wear scented/perfumed lotions or body spray or whatever! I was also a patient in the ICU for two weeks ((I was very ill)) and it was absolutely gut wrenching when the nurses or techs or anyone would come in "smelling good" .. from a patient's perspective, it is really terrible .. So now I know why they tell us not to wear that stuff, not to mention it could trigger allergies. Thanks again for the videos :)

So glad I came across your nurse videos! They are so helpful. So I have been a nurse at a hematology clinic for 2 years since graduating school. I am now starting a new job on a medical renal unit at a hospital. I feel like I have so much I need to review since I worked in such a specialized area. Any tips for reviewing materials? My medsurg book from school is HUGE and overwhelming. They do have a good orientation program on my unit, but I'd like to do some independent studying/reviewing on my own as well. Thanks!

I just stumbled on your channel. I will graduate with my BSN in December. Still not working as an RN so I will definitely check your other videos, since someone in the comment section stated you have interviewing tips. It is tough in South Florida when it comes to jobs. One thing that you seem to have missing in your bag that I learned one should always carry, is an extra set of scrubs, for those situations when you must change. I love your energy. what unit do you usually work on? I am an RN in Neuro ICU/ PCU and we got all that stuff handy.I am usually running and cant carry that much stuff. my brains (PT info) go in my pocket. we carry a radio and phone and tons of stuff. I am obsessed with pens and good shoes! I wish you were on my floor! you are sooooo nice. Agency Nurses usually seem to get treated like crap. I am sure you are loved though. You are by me. I carry my tape stacked on my hemostats and then clipped to my scrub top. Paper tape med tape and a mini roll of coban, and Leatherman Raptor shears. They have a built in O2 wrench. I tape a small emesis cylinder on my CAB and stuff it with needles and 10ml flushes. rock on beautiful girl!

How are you sterilising those wound dressing scissors? I don''t think it's a great idea to not use individually wrapped and sterilised scissors provided by the hospital for dressings because even if you sterilise them at home, you are then putting them back in your bag will all of your other possibly contaminated medical equipment. Also just the ick factor of putting something that's been so close to a wound, in the same bag as your lip balm.

    • @empowern

I'm really good about staying out of drama.... I'm careful not to communicate with anyone that talks about people behind their backs.
Because I know that as soon as I turn my back... they will be talking about me lol ;)
If there is a rare chance that I do get sucked in... I just shrug it off & try to change the subject to something more light & interesting.

Do you wipe down your personal pulse ox & temp probe with some sort of bleach or other cleaning wipes? Just wondering about infection control.

This is a great and informative video. Can you do a video on making the transition from CNA to extern? Now I am a CNA and at the end of the fall semester I plan to apply for a externship where I will get on the job nursing experience after my 2nd semester which will be med-surg/Peds OB nursing. I will apply in probably apply for the externship in nov or dec and I want to know things like how I can prepare for an externship during the 2nd med-surg semester. (I am in an associate program.) I work at a nursing home that is owned by a hospital so I should not have a problem getting the externship before I graduate, but I want to know things like what should I have on my resume. I already have my skills sign off sheet showing the skills I can do from the first semester. What skills should be second nature other than vital signs? How can I improve my chances of getting the externship after second semester instead of waiting until 4th semester like many of my friends had to do. Any suggestions. Thanks.

nursevsfood CRNA is awesome! I know a lot of people who go that route & love it... super competitive though. Also I heard that getting your nurse practitioner & specializing in dermatology was also really good :)

      Hi Linda!
It actually came in the mail for free one day lol.
It was pretty nice, but cheap & didn't last long... would love to see a high quality version. If I find one I will let you guys know!

+EmpoweRN Thanks for replying back! I did also want to comment on your 9 volt battery. You need to put that into a case of something so that the probes do not come into contact with metal and spark a fire. It is a good idea to put them in a case anyways because you never know when one of them might leak. Love all of your videos!

That's good job but no. In the UK you get bands. When I finish uni I be band 5 nurse which means I'm worth between 22 and 28k a year. And then band 6 is 25k to 33k year and then goes band 7 then band 8a, 8b and 8c and 8d. If you don't go university you can get up to band 4 but generally a 3 only. It's basically pay bands and how qualified you are if that makes sense xx

Hi I wanted to know if you have any tips for nursing students like me who are in Mexico and want to go and work after graduating to USA ?

    • @empowern
      @empowern  10 лет назад

      Hi Iuzelena!
It is so nice to hear from you all the way from Mexico :)
I have to be honest and say that I do not, but what you could do is decide which state you want to go to & go the nursing website. Every state has a board of nursing site, for example Florida Board of Nursing or Texas Board of nursing... so type that into google and you should be able to find some information there.
      I hope this helps!!
Let me know if you need anything else!
      Much Love,

It is really nice to hear from you!
I wish I was like you & knew what I wanted to do right after high school.... I would have gone straight into it.
      However, I didn't so I took a little break.
If I were you, I would just go for it with no breaks ;)
      I hope this helps!!

Very cool vid and useful to see a nurses ready bag. a really awesome tool, tho expensive, are folding Medical shears. could not agree more that a Sharpie is super important, it is in pre-hospital care too. such a simple yet useful tool, esp. in trauma.
