I am a nurse as well, and I love seeing resources like these that help us feel less alone in our careers and how we feel!
One thing I notice about negative cultured units is that nurses receive much resistance, aggression, or gossiping when they are trying their best to work hard. Not trying to out-work someone else. Just trying to do the best for the unit and the patients. Even when trying to help other nurses out with their call lights and admissions, or taking admissions to help out, I notice negative nurses get upset. As if laziness is a common bonding point?

Thank you so much for this video! I am a new graduate working in critical care and today I came home feeling likely I did all I could do for my patient, yet I felt attacked by a senior nurse by not doing enough, such as asking a more experienced nurse for help. Your video helped me realize that maybe there is a bit of negative culture on my unit, unfortunately, because there is a lot of "who" versus "what can I do" to help with some staff. You help me put into perspective what was going on at the time of the encounter, and you made me feel empowered verses defeated. I welcome more videos likely this one, especially with having to do with units where new graduates feel likely there are too many "chiefs" lending a helping hand. As a new graduate, I do not want to turn away senior staff from helping, but I also have a difficult time hearing words like, "if you keep making these mistakes I wouldn't want you to take care of my loved ones," when I'm getting excellent reviews from my evaluators. Sometimes I feel like some senior members of my team think I am an idiot just because I don't have years of experience. I know my knowledge level does not begin to match theirs, and I welcome their help, but I don't want to be made to feel inadequate because I am a new graduate. Sometimes I don't know whether to defend my nursing plan or accept their criticism, however harsh even if it is helpful. So in tears but confident, albeit for once, that I acted promptly and with the correct treatment, I came home to seek your guidance and to no surprise you had a video for me to seek solace in. Thank you and please keep them coming!

      Hi Melanie!
It is so nice to hear from you!
Thank you so much for writing this....
It means so much to know that it has helped you!!!
Honestly, I'm not 100% what the right thing to do is.... but I will say this:
One of the best things you can do is, keep on keeping on & doing your absolute best.
Hearing harsh words like that is hard for anyone... I heard them too & it is one of the main reasons why I started writing & Vloging.
I have a few phrases that I live by:
      1. If something has hurt me, I will find a way to help others through it.
      2. The best revenge is to be happy & successful yourself.
So perhaps when the time comes & you will be precepting a newbie (it will come sooner than you think.... be preceptor that you never had....).
And when other nurses are saying the mean words to you, imagine yourself working successfully by yourself with your patients and their families loving you!
These mental shifts will take you far!!!!
At least they have for me anyways ;)
I have another video coming out soon that I think you will like... already recorded it, just have to edit it, so stay tuned ;)
Thanks again for this comment & really looking forward to hearing from you again soon!
      Much Love,
      - Caroline

You're such a inspiration! I've been a nurse for 20 years and I have taken a couple years off to be with my family.Ive had to basically start over on a med-surg unit on night shift. The culture is so negative and morale is so low,it's very disheartening. I was so excited about going back to work, but now I come home crying because the nurses are vicious! I know it's not about me,but it's hard to be positive with such a negative atmosphere. I love your insight and it gets me through these difficult situations. I love nursing and I'm not sure if I should confront the situation with my manager or just do my job and know that eventually those nurses will get complaints from other nurses. or patients. It's like they can't stand my optimism, I can hear them talking about me,it's ridiculous! I know that it's not about ME,it's their issues. HURT people,HURT People😊

Thank you so much for the response ! The question : ''what else can I do ?'' is brilliant ! Im a little bit too sensitive so when I feel people are judging me or their gossipers around me , it tends to affect my performances and confidence. Im glad to hear that with experience you can change to a more positive culture unit.

Great video! "What else can I do?" works really well.My all time favorite response to criticism, second-guessing and outright rudeness is: smile as genuinely as you can and say, "thank you for pointing that out. I really appreciate your help." This REALLY works, and I could also learn something to improve my practice. Also, at the end of each shift, I always make a point of thanking whoever helped me during that shift…. other nurses, housekeeping, dietary, PCAs, transport, even doctors! It takes a team to run a unit, and everyone needs to feel appreciated. Oh, one other comment: the call bell light. Why didn't the Director or Supervisor not answer the call bell light? You were obviously busy; they are still nurses; a patient needed something…. just sayin'

I have learned that all interactions are 50/50. Our actions during any interaction accounts for 50%. It is not our place or job to "fix" others or to expect certain reactions out of people. Everyone's actions come from a combination of their own life experiences, personalty, maturity level and daily emotions that vary by day. This is liberating to me because it means that I am not the total cause of their negativity. So what we can do is to monitor our own actions. A negative environment is the same. You cannot control your environment, you can only control how you react and operate within it. I used to blame the job (not nursing, I am still a student :) and was constantly finding new work environments. That does not work! :) Just because the unit is poorly run doesn't mean that you should poorly run your job. I would like to end with a short quote from the bible ".....knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance; and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope....."

I'm an agency AIN and seriously struggling with the attitude and lack of help. But one positive I find is that I know when I am an RN I will be patient and helpful with agency staff. Yes they may have lots of questions but it's a heck of a lot better than having no one to pick up the slack!

Also had two other questions: what other places can nurses work after graduation other than hospital setting? I feel not all nurses want to work in the hospital setting, like me personally! Second question, is nursing school really hard? Did you study like crazy? Ive heard horror stories and i start nursing school soon so im nervous! Everyone always says nursing school is harder than med school!!

Thank you for sharing your insights - you certainly have lots of great ones from agency nursing. I definitely agree that gossiping, blame, stressed-out attitudes and unfair assignments are good indications of a negative nursing culture. You really can't tell just based on the 'type' of nursing floor that you're on... I think for the most part it goes back to management (or lack thereof). I like your perspective of 'what else can I do?' Awesome video.

Healthcare is completely fucked up. Administration attempts to blame everything on the nurses working the floor. They have nurses filling out documentation for the physician and allowing the doctor to skip on their documentation for weeks and months. Shaming of the nurse and belittling the nurses in front of others is a big one. There isn't anything else that a nurse can do for everyone. Other duties as assigned is dangerous and leaves nurses open to liabilities. Then the famous administrative line "why didn't you tell me or you never said that" deflection. If the nurses dont stand up against work place bullies and help each other to ratio the patients down there will be more lawsuits. No nurse should have to cater to screaming families over moms pants in laundry when its time for blood glucose checks and patient rounds. Administration is about saving money and getting a bonus every year.

You had me ‘til the end. It’s so disappointing tonhear you say that, ultimately, new grads just have to tough it out a few years before they can expect to find a rewarding career in a professional environment. It’s tacit agreement with the old guard that new nurses need to pay their dues.
