    How hard is nursing school?
Hey guys! I'm Caroline Porter Thomas with some information to help you prepare for success in nursing school. You may ask, is nursing school hard? How stressful is nursing school? How to study for nursing school. Or even, what are the requirements for nursing school.
Here are some nursing school requirements that the schools and universities will not hold you too. However they will make the biggest difference between passing and failing.
You have to remember that nursing is hard... even as a job it requires you to know a lot. So the main reason that nursing school is difficult is because you are expected to be very knowledgeable.
In this video I will share with you the 3 parts of your life that you will want to examine before you site down for your first class. They are: Your current financial situation, the time commitment & the emotional investment. We will examine whether you can afford nursing school financially and emotionally. We will also examine how to create change in your life so that you can afford it financially & emotionally. I will also tell you my personal story on how I was able to afford nursing school. And then, I will remind you of how awesome being a nurse is.
    I hope you enjoy!
If so please like the video so that I know!

Your video and your honesty was what I needed to hear tonight. I am half way through nursing school and I have been feeling very down about a recent bad grade. I work hard day in and day out to get the best possible grades in order to pass my classes and then when you throw in family commitments and loved ones that as much as we love them, can not understand the constant difficulties, it really starts to wear you down. However, I was so encouraged when I heard that nursing school is emotionally taxing. I needed that confirmation to know that this is normal to be feeling this emotionally fatigued. I know that I am strong. I know that I have conquered many battles and nursing school is going to be another challenge that I will finish with success.

I love this!! I changed careers and went back to school for nursing- I am halfway through my junior year now and I agree with everything you said. Nursing school is HARD and it will take up most of your time. You have to be willing to do it. Relationships, partying, sleeping, all have to come down the list priority wise. I will say if you love it and you get the passion it’s much easier to do!

Caroline, first of all, I love watching your videos, you are so inspirational! I am currently in nursing school, entering my 4th term(ob,peds and psych). What you are saying in this video is so true. I am 25 and married;I was waitressing as well. I knew that I would have to work less and actually had to move back home with my mother which she was not too happy about.Nursing school is truly something that engulfs your life. But, I am so looking forward to a bright, rewarding future and financial stability! love you!

Thanks for your advice. Im considering going back to school and maybe try the nursing program but I am scared...I have kids and although I have been a stay at home mom for years now and my husband has been supporting us..I really wanted to get a job. My youngest is now 5 years old and is in full time kindergarten so I wanted to start earning money again, finally. By the way, I love the fact that you said you went back to live with your parents but obey their rules even though you are an adult. That shows you are a good daughter and you have good parents to have rules. It is their home so that's a price you pay for moving in with them... :)

    Hi!
I love the way you laid out the truth about nursing school. I have to agree with every piece of information provided. This whole journey (pre-requisites and program) has taken me about 6 1/2 years to complete because I had to balance school, work and three little ones. However, it is very possible if you take all of the help you can. I recently graduated, passed my NCLEX , and plan to start working in the Fall. I have faith that all of this time I committed will pay off, as you said. :)
Blessings! ! Thank you for helping us all see the light at the end of the tunnel.

I have 2 semesters left until I graduate and I was ready to give up and drop out. It's so hard but I swear, when I saw this video, the ending motivated me and all of a sudden I had this immense feeling of motivation and I am going right back to studying and I swear nothing will get in my way. I don't enjoy nursing, ER, OR, or anything having to do with blood and death and all that but I would love to teach anatomy in a school and I feel like having a nursing degree would maybe help me. Thank you so much for being so honest, I swear if it had not been for you, I would have lost all hope.

I found your video encouraging.. I'm a second semester nursing student and I really struggled my first semester trying to adjust to the level of organization that is required in nursing school. I'm doing a lot better now in my second semester although there's always room for improvement. It's difficult for us men because organization is by far not our strongest feature. With that in mind, if you're a man that's getting into the nursing program soon, remember to make good classmate friends (mainly women) that are willing to help each other out through the program. If you can join up with some male students that's great because that's extra support and it's easy to get along no drama.. However, having female classmates as friends is absolutely crucial.. because they somehow know all the little side details that is easy for a man to miss.. women are just more on top of things.. I mean, I had an A in A & P and an A in Micro, but they are just fast thinkers and their critical thinking skills are phenomenal.. Luckily this semester I've paired up with some incredible classmates that are willing to work together to succeed together. Anyway, I found your video encouraging because I've been feeling very exhausted lately because of all the time nursing school is taking from my life not to mention that I sometimes have a little bit of an insomnia problem so I'm just always exhausted.. and I was just browsing Michael Linares nursing videos which explain nursing topics with such an amazing clarity and your video was on the side.. so I clicked on it from curiosity and I'm glad I did because you had some words of encouragement.. Thank you for adding your final comments about how much better your life is now,.. that was exactly what I needed to hear!!!!
    Thanks again! :-)

After that i planned on going for my RPN but i think you changed my mind into trying to go into the Bachelor Nursing program. Here in canada its only RPN or Bachelor but it seems like to bridge to the bachelor program it would be more trouble then its worth. I'm about to finish my last semester. Did a career change at age 67. Nursing school is the hardest thing I've ever done. I'm disapppinted at the rather nasty drop out rate. Close to 50% in my program. Clinical grading is quite subjective and varies depending on instructor.

Do you mind if I ask if you are a nurse in California or a state where you have a mandated patient to nurse ratio? I think California they have a 4:1 ratio for floor nurses. I live in NJ, and one of the pitfalls of nursing is when you have to handle your Patients (that med cart) and half of the other patients (and that med cart too). Thanks for posting all these videos…I think your account of nursing is spot on!

I was a wreck too. I thought I was stupid and would never make it. I thought I would at least try and excelled far beyond my expectations. Don't let anyone stop you or shake your confidence. I only have an associates degree, get a BSN if possible. But I've been a nurse 25 years in LTC. Take your time. I took 2 years to do my prerequisites because I worked full time. Nursing school went by like a dream. I studied hard but it's nothing you can't do. Don't believe the horror stories. It's doable. You want it, you WILL do it!

I feel like if I manage my time right I can do this. I don't have a car nor will I put in the money to get one no matter what my family says. Too many bills and I need that money in case something goes wrong. That way if I catch a trolley to school and back I can still do 12 credits a semester while working the weekends and afford to pay to be where I live. I'm just very lucky I have grandparents who let me stay at their second home that's already paid for besides having lot rent, a good part-time job that pays well, qualify for a pell grant, have my high school diploma, don't have kids, and live in a town that has public transit. I'm ambitious and don't want to put this off any longer and will do what I have to do to get to school.

Thankfully, I have no kids or no wife. I'm 34, and I really need to get the ball rolling. I tried asking my mom if I could live with them. I initially got very sad about what I was understanding. I then decided that I would work part time, rent a room from someone somewhere, work part time, get food stamps and financial aid. I don't care! If you want it bad enough, you'll do it no matter what you have to do! Rite?

Great video! I wasn't sure of what to expect when thinking of becoming a nurse, but thanks to your videos I'm getting a better idea. I'm still in high school 17 years old, and I'm really interested in becoming a nurse. I think it would be great to help people on a daily basis. A question I have is where do you work now, because my dream is to move to California, and make a living over there?

I have to ask what is it like to work in a hospital. I worked in nursing homes. From what I can tell most nurse spend time passing meds, taking vitals sings and so on. Those are the doctors order correct. Anything from vitals signs, IV's, im injections, blood tests blood transfusions are md's orders right. Do you guys have medicine carts in the hospital that have patients medications and so on. How often do you educate your and or teach them about nursing care or medicine.

Thank you so much for this video! I'm 22 years old and just graduated with my BS in Exercise Science. I'm choosing to go back to school to pursue Nursing. What have you seen as some differences between earning your ADN/ASN vs. BSN when trying to work? As of right now, I'm thinking about getting my Associates and bridging to a RN-BSN program at a 4 year school after that to save money. Do you recommend this? Or do you recommend going to a 4 year school to directly get your BSN?

Thank you so much for your videos! I have my bachleors degree and want to switch careers to nursing! However, I think an accelerated program would be too difficult and fast paced for me. Would it be better to do an ADN program or could I do a generic BSN with no nursing experience? What do you think would be best in a situation like this? Thanks! :)

    • @empowern
      @empowern  10 лет назад

      Kc Romano Hi Kc!
Honestly, If I were you I would just shoot for the accelerated program....
If you go through the ADN program, you would almost be wasting all the time you spent on getting your BA. However if you really think that the accelerated program is too much, at least shoot for a generic BSN program :)
      I hope this helps!!
