I dropped the program 3 weeks ago. Every single word you said I resonated with so much. I knew for a long time that my heart was not in nursing, but I went along with it bc I was scared. Scared of letting my family down, scared of not having direction in my life, scared of making the wrong decision. Every single time I would go to clinical or thought about my future as a nurse I would get this awful feeling. I was anxious and sad all of the time. I would always hope someone in the program also felt like I did, but everyone seemed to be so excited to learn all of the skills and experience everything nursing school offered, so I found myself lying to everyone all the time. Pretending I was excited too, pretending nursing was my calling when it wasn’t. I didn’t want to disappoint my parents, especially after they had supported me through so much all through college, but I ultimately had to choose my happiness over any fear of being judged or disappointing others. Quitting nursing school has been one of the hardest decisions I’ve made but also one of the best. I have so much peace now with the decision I made and I am happier than I have been in a long time. I respect the nursing profession very much, it just wasn’t for me and I’m okay with that. Thank you for sharing your story!

Im currently doing my final year of nursing.. I should have listened to my gut feeling the moment it started.. Everything you said is what I've been experiencing since my first year.. And I've just been lying to myself.. Thinking that 'eventually I'll get over the feeling' but i haven't.. I feel so lost.. I have clinical at 07:00 and that awful dreadful feeling and anxiety.. Honestly i don't even know how to describe the feeling, is there.. Its always there.. I know I dont want to do it anymore I don't want to do anything medical related in my life ever again. I just have to build up the courage to make this decision and go through with it.

As a nurse, I swear that one of the best decisions you ever made in your life was being brave enough to quit nursing. Don't let anyone, thing, ad convince you to become a nurse or thag it's not that bad. Your mental health, life will be at risk. The school is beyond hard and stressful, working is 10x worse. I would do absolutely anything to go back and quit. Idk how I'm going to get through this in life. I was happy with what I had but wanted to "do something with my life." That would be my one absolute wish in life. I'm glad that you were brave enough to quit because many of us feel like failures and are afraid to "disappoint" people. Many more blessings to you.

Listening to you is so scary for me. I resonate with so much that you’re saying. I literally HATE school. Hate it. Passionately. It feels like a burden on my life. I started January, and it feels like I’m in jail and just waiting to finish my time. I think that maybe this is normal to feel this way about going to class everyday because it’s the nursing program -and nursing school is hard. But there’s this little pull on my heart wondering if I’m wrong about that. Just because nursing school is hard doesn’t mean it shouldn’t feel exciting and enjoyable.

    • @jennylauren
      @jennylauren  4 года назад +17

That was a hard realization I had to make. Even though nursing school was tough, I hated it with a passion but it was obvious that my fellow classmates didn't feel the same way. As a an RN myself I will tell you it would surprise you how many people absolutely hate their life as a nurse. What is even scarier are the people who are doctors that hate the profession. Healthcare has a way of sucking the life out of you. If all you ever did or pursued was a healthcare related job you really don’t know how it is outside in a different corporate environment. Life is pretty cushy. Luckily, I only spent so long in the hospital and I now work for an insurance company. Life is good haha. But hospital life...that blows.

I guess that would be more so your opinion. Working in a hospital is by far cushier and nicer than any other job I've worked at in my life. The benefits are amazing, the people you work with are generally very intelligent, and you get to evoke real change in patients lives vs working your butt off for the gain of a company's bottom line.

@@dataanalystbynight4375 Ive worked lots of different jobs in my life. Retail, restaurant, shipping, painting, mailing, trucks delivering, factory jobs, etc. Lifting heavy objects, not getting paid a lot, working long hours, being covered in food or dirt at the end of your shift. I would choose a hospital any day. Ive worked on a high acuity inpatient adult psychiatric floor as a tech for a few years and have one semester left in nursing school, my capstone. Myself and all my coworkers on my unit including nurses, NPs, social workers, etc certainly have it better off than those other jobs ive mentioned. I don't envision any of that changing when I start as an RN at the end of this year.
It just makes me laugh hearing someone say working in a hospital "blows," there are much more physically demanding and difficult jobs out there that certainly blow more and I think you may just be burned out in healthcare. But that's okay! Dissuading people from healthcare though is a slippery slope, for a lot of people have it much worse.

I'm an upcoming sophomore in college and I'm so glad I realized that nursing wasn't for me early on. I just didn't have the passion for it anymore, anytime someone would ask me something about nursing I would be so unenthusiastic, like I did not want to talk about it at all. I felt pressured to choose nursing because my family told me I'd make a lot of money for being a nurse. But let me tell y'all, the amount of money you make is not going to suffice if you're not happy with what you're doing. Sure, nurses make a ton of money, but other careers make a lot as well. Don't let these comments from someone behind a screen hurt your feelings, they don't know what you're going through. I am currently looking into Sociology & Early Childhood, I haven't decided which yet, but I'm leaning towards Sociology to become a social worker :)

My jaw literally dropped listening to how similar our stories are..I decided to quit nursing school this October - about 2 months into the semester (I had already completed 2 years of the program and was in my third and final year) so it was a HUGE decision..I completely relate to having that gut feeling it wasn't for me, feeling sick the night before clinical and during the actual day, feeling the happiest when clinical would be cancelled. I remember my teacher cancelling because of the weather one day and I can't even tell you the last time I felt that happy lol. I think for me though a big problem I had was having the responsibility of another persons life in my hands. I feel dumb for not realizing that earlier but I never actually realized how involved a nurse actually is in decision making which I really only started noticing during my last semester. I totally relate to feeling like you're lying to yourself and others (which is also why it was a huge shock to my family) because quitting just didn't feel like an option when I had already been so invested. There was definitely tension in my house at first as well but I'm glad I have a supportive family and I'm glad it sounds like you're in the same situation now as well. Don't listen to the people in the comments telling you you made a mistake. So many people lie to themselves and end up as a nurse for YEARS, miserable and hating their lives. It's NOT for everyone and that's okay. I really feel for you girl..it's a tough thing we both had to go through but in the end I really believe we'll be stronger for it. Quitting doesn't mean all that work was for nothing. It made us stronger, smarter, more hardworking. We'll take that with us wherever we go. I'm proud of everything I accomplished and I hope you are too.
Good luck on the next chapter of you life

But I applied to university next semester (nursing is a college course where I live) to work towards becoming a speech language pathologist. I’m not 100% sure yet but I think it sounds like a great field. Helping people, having a rewarding career without the crazy amount of stress. I can still work in a hospital setting, with kids or adults or in the NICU but with much more flexible hours, lower intensity and still really good pay. I’m also considering psychology or genetic counselling but SLP is my main plan right now :) I’m also shadowing and meeting with people from all fields which is something I never did with nursing and really regretted..

I think quitting is looked down upon way too often, and it actually takes a lot of courage to realize something isn't for you/isn't what you want and doing something to change it. I was also a psych major in undergrad and my mom is a psych nurse, so it was interesting to hear both perspectives. You are taking the words out of my mouth. I’m in my 1st semester of nursing school in my clinicals in a long term care facility and I’m finding myself DREADING going to clinicals and learning the skills. And I thought the same thing like it’s normal I’m passing the skills effortlessly and like everybody is stressing. Then I started waking up like 3-4 times a week in the middle of the night looking up another career and everyday I start to realize how I don’t think it’s for me. Like I hate having to go to clinicals and skills class. And you saying how you feel like your letting people down is how I’m feeling which is why I haven’t quit it yet. I just want to say thank you!!! I needed this push to listen to myself.

Im currently feeling the same way.
Ive fought sooo hard to get to Nursing school, but now that Im here I don’t feel the same way that I once felt about it.
Im doing labs right now, learning basic Nursing, Pharmacology, Health assessment & my passion just isn’t there. I dread going to class, the workload is overwhelming, the classes are 8hrs long, plus Im having to go home & teach myself bc my professors don’t teach. & I sometimes think to myself "Do I really want to take care of sick ppl for the rest of my life?"…NO!
I’ve always been an artsy/creative person since a kid. So Im naturally good at hair, & make up, & I love fashion. I’ve put away modeling, & shut down my online boutique to pursue nursing & I miss those things.🥺
I want to be brave enough to quit nursing school, but Im afraid of my parents feelings towards me, failing, & future regrets.

I’ve been in the medical field for 12 years now and recently I’ve started to think about a change in career. Looking more towards getting my real estate license. I’m tired of taking care of sick people and dealing with so much a lot of complaints and frustrated people who many times take their anger out on us. Doctors don’t see this, only the people who work with patients directly do. Doctors only diagnose and go on to the next patient. Many times it leaves me feeling unappreciated and mistreated. The healthcare field is so demanding with a mix of emotions. I tried becoming a nurse and it didn’t work, I tried becoming a respiratory therapist and it wasn’t for me. I worked as a hospice nurse aid for a bit and it was too overwhelming for me. So I became a medical assistant in 2008, and have worked since then. I still don’t feel accomplished in life. I know there’s more out there for me. Real estate has always been a passion of mine. Looking forward to starting classes too. Perhaps it’s time for a change in career.

I resonate so much with this because I was in a BN program at university after doing 2 years of pre-requisite courses. There were aspects of nursing school I liked (especially meeting new people and listening to lots of good guest speakers), but after doing a few weeks of clinical I was a nervous wreck. I wouldn't eat before clinical or even the night before when we did prep for it and during the entire shift I was so scared to make a mistake. I didn't have a passion to learn the nursing skills and read the chapters beyond maybe the second month. I decided to drop out in 2019 and I am now 3 months away from completing a medical secretary program. As time has passed I realized it’s not greener on the other side. That’s when I realized I made the right decision by not quitting, I think an RN degree is always something good to have under your wing in case other Interests/plans you have don’t work out. Its a stable career and you can always move up the ladder with a masters & have better hours & pay. I know nursing is not for everyone so it’s ultimately an individuals own decision to make, I’m just sharing my story.

Also some nurses are extremely cocky and rude to other nurses and think they’re great when they’re not good people and not as smart as they think when it comes to making life and death decisions. And a lot of these people are in management.

Thanks for making this video. I’m on the verge of a mental breakdown every day because I got into nursing and i’m only in my first semester and it feels like I’m making a mistake. I feel like if I drop out it would be embarrassing and i’d be letting people down even though no one has helped me to this point and my own parents aren’t around to guide me. I chose nursing because I want to feel useful and make a difference in people’s lives and nursing is a stable job and I probably won’t ever have to worry about my financial status again. But I don’t want to be unhappy. And I’m scared i’m making a mistake that I will regret years from now and then have to start over. I’ve spent a lot of money already on school and I’m just really lost right now and don’t know what to do.

Oh hi. Same girl im going to quit nursing school also. Im going to my teacher this teusday and say that im going to quit. I havent told my mum yet.... Pray for me im so scared to tell them. I was so hyped for nursing school but then the first month in september iw as like nawh this aint it. But i was scared to stop and say i dont want it. And the first few weeks i litteraly already cried in my bed because i was so not happy. Its not like i havent made any friends i made a lot of friends thats really the reason why i stayed so long untill January. But then it was christmas break and i was so happy that i finally was gone from school. The last couple of months of 2019 were really hard for me. I was really not 'me' i felt so 'drowned' in my own life. I didnt know what i want who i was. And then it was the second semester i had my first test behind and my scores were really good i only had 2 bad points. If i look back at my test i was already knowing i didnt want it. I was self saboting myself by not learning for ANY TEST. But im really good in school and i never had a problem with exams and stuff. Then the first two days of 2020 i literaly was crying so bad because i dont know what to do with school and myself.
So NOW after christmas back the first monday after i was acting ''happy'' and ''overhyping'' yeah im so glad to go back blabllbal. Even tho in the inside i was crying. Then i had my first day after vacation and i came home and i litteraly had a mental breakdown. I cried so much and i was litteraly drowning in my tears. This last 12 days i didnt even eat because i was so sad and i forgot to eat dinner because i was crying so much.
This weekend instead of ignoring my feelings. I searched something up about quitting school and i saw something like ''If you don't see yourself doing this for the couple 40 years'' Than u might wanna consider quitting. And i really knew inside that i was lying to myself this past 5 months i was lying to everyone around me acting like i loved it. While i was ''fake smiling'' while i was litteraly exausted and crying inside! It was really hard for me to say out loud ''Im going to quit''. Because nursing school is só expensive and i litteraly wanted this for like 2 years and now im just going to quit. And im starting another study this september.
Im scared about how my future is going to look. I feel lost to be honest.
But after i said im going to quit. I felt happy, i felt relief, i felt great! I havent felt like that in a really long time.
I understand your feelings. I really feel so alone at the moment but im glad to see that im not the only one feeling like this.
(YO btw i really sound a cry baby now but thats bc of this... i havent cried this bad in like 2 years...)

Ugh I feel you so much. Sometimes lying to yourself seems like an easy solution but it won't get you very far in the long run. I'm so happy for you that you took a step back to reflect and think about what you really want for yourself in the future. It sucks that nursing school is so expensive, but I think even if we can't get the money back, at least we gained some great experience and now we know for sure it's not for us. Best of luck!!! We are in this together! You will feel like a weight has been lifted off your shoulders once you open up to others about it! 💜 You are not a cry baby, don't invalidate what you're feeling! Listen to your gut and don't let people put you down about it. Hang in there! ♥️

I’m a licensed Psychiatric technician in Southern California. We went through basic and advanced nursing. It was super stressful and challenging. I love psychology so that’s why I jumped ship from a university to do the psychiatric technology vocational program. I really wasn’t interested in anything except for the body functions, pathology, psychiatric disorders, medication and injections. The other nursing skills were just a little more invasive than I wanted to be dealing with. However, I did finish the program and passed my boards. However, the field of mental health is rough. Also, I really enjoyed the psychiatric facility clinical rotation! Psychology is the best. I also realized that I didn’t want to continue my education into an RN program. A lot of the students in my cohort wanted to eventually be an RN and saw being a psychiatric technician as a stepping stone. Not me!

i know this vid is old but thank you for posting. i dropped after 3 days of my second semester. I had anxiety before but man first semester ruined it for sure (mainly lab). it was fun learning something new but second semester was just gonna be ROUGH and we had sim lab coming up which made me nauseous. I know it probably sounds dumb but my anxiety was nooooo joke. just thinking that i would look like a failure terrified me. my instructor for medsurg also is a 1 star on rate my professor and i was not about to deal with her. It’s been so rough because i know they say it’s “okay” to them but i can tell my family is disappointed. i am too I guess. I’ve been hopping around majors trying to figure what i love. I was just 7 months from being done, but of course if my heart is not fully in it. it’s best not to have a career in it of course. i never had a passion truly for it but the fact that i haven’t finished a degree or even nursing school just keeps bringing me down:/ feel like a screw up to the family

hey, im in the same boat. i quit nursing school. i feel embarrassed saying this to people because ive always talked about becoming a nurse, but now im not even in nursing school. i also thought that it was my dream job because i genuinely had interest in it and my mom always wanted me to be a nurse but i guess u dont really know much about it until youre in school. and overall i just want to be happy. i dont know what i want to do in life and im freakin out because i feel like i wasted so much time and money that i couldve put into a career that i acc like. im only 20 but i feel like time is going by so fast and i know people are like "you're still young, you have time to figure it out" but it does not feel like that. im currently taking a year off, exploring my options and i hope to go back to school in 2022
if you see this, could you pls make a video on what you are planning to do for what you want to do, like your options and interests.

I went through the exact same from fall 2017 to 2018. From being at the top of my class in terms of grades and clinical grades to questioning why was I there and just absolutely hating clinical although I loved to learn the medical knowledge and skills as I always wanted to be a physician but life circumstances didnt allow. Funny I was the one making the most connections with the patients at hospital and the nursing home residents and even the staff, patients and resudents were requesting to be with me, one resident told a nurse when we were saying our goodbyes at the end of semester about me “dont let ger go” this one never spoke before. I was always the first one jumping on tasks and helping rns clean up or do tasks, while my freinds who now have nursing jobs always tried to avoid tasks such as cleaning up. But inside it was driving me insane I started getting weird nightmares of screams in my head and all kinds of skin rashes and made me have a full load of grey hairs near the front of my head and ears from having not even one before in a matter of two semesters, not because I couldnt do well or couldnt handle the workload, i like working hard and achieveing, but because I was worried sick if About what I was doing and not knowing if that what I wanted to do with my life. I sacrificed too much to get into the program financially and timewise. Mine was a 2nd degree compressed program so clinical started first semester. I dreaded each night before, could never sleep and felt my gut coming out of my throat. Sometimes the decision still haunts me when I look at some freinds getting some jobs that I thought id go for once i got my licence, and all the praise that is going on right now due to cvd19, but I hope they actually do something to improve the employment conditions, not just sing praise and thank you on tv and bang pots and light up city buildings or temporarily increase the pay, I have tremendous respect for what they do, I met some great and inspiring people but for some reason I felt the majority of the nurses were not someone I wanted to become like, the environment was just not for me and I felt like I wouldnt survive mentally. I also was not able to handle all of the suffering and the hospital environment and the system around me something inside me didnt agree to it. I came here to to feel reassured for my decision that I made in 2018. When we started the program the director and all profs said that this job is recession proof, emergency proof, disaster proof and noble. While that has proven itself, thanks to 2020, funny a little too soon, scary too! But I still cant find myself to decide go back no matter how much I think about it. I am happier doing other things. I got another job doing totally something different but much much much less pay but I was so happy I wanted to wakeup early in the mroning and go to work. Dont know if that job would last through the crisis, if it does well amd good but if it doesnt, I’ll find something else, but not nursing. And I still have to figure out how to pay back my student loan, because I have previous bachelors and another half degree trying to get prereqs, in psyc and kinesiology. I hope I can utilize those somehow. Still to this day I am grateful for the nursing school experience, every single thing that I learned and everyone that I met. It made me a better person but just the particular profession isnt for me.

Reading the comments and watching the video really made me feel like I wasn't the only one. I was a pre-nursing student and chose to go to community college to save money. I'm from California and EVERYBODY wants to be a god damn nurse. The thing is, most of them don't know why. In my chem class, our teacher asked us one question "What do you want to be in the health science field?". Literally, 90% of the class said nursing, which made me feel intimidated because nursing is already competitive and now I would have to compete with these people and hundreds of more. Also, I had some older classmates where nursing is their second career and when they said they wanted to be a nurse, I could tell from their eyes and voices that they wanted to become one. When I answered I truthfully said, "I don't know". I really didn't know what I wanted to do and nursing was literally put into my head because of family and society standards. I was scared of not getting a secured job and this was a straightforward path. But, I knew I was not going to be happy. I switched majors this semester, and I am far happier than before. The unknown still scared me, but I have done more work in the major I am pursuing than in nursing. I feel like I had far more potential on this path than if I were to be a nurse.

Just graduated with my bachelor's in psychology. Looking into a direct entry nursing masters program. I don't care for the actual nursing profession, just more of the psychiatric part, since I don't really want to be hands on or bedside. My end goal is a psychiatric nurse practitioner since I heard they don't do much bedside. This being said, do you think I would be able to handle the master's program?

    • @jennylauren

I definitely think you can do it! I personally found that psychiatric nursing was way harder than any psychology class I took for my degree. I just had to work a lot harder in nursing but it was still manageable. I'm not sure how the NP program works where you live but I'm sure it will be challenging because there will be quite a learning curve. That doesn't mean it's impossible, though. As long as you dedicate yourself to the program, you will be okay! Best of luck 💕💕

Hi there, I am in nursing school now and I feel myself not being happy and feeling so discouraged all the time. Although I have some “good” days. I feel majority of my day’s are sad and dark. I am back to not sleeping regularly - which I hate and the amount of work that needs to be done. On top of extensive work and jumping through those hurdles to make sure I am doing everything correct. There are professors who could careless if you make it or not. I don’t need anyone to cater to me specifically but if you’re in a field to teach other students to be a Nurse at least have some compassion. This has been one of my biggest discouragements.

But God do I want to just quit and go back to living life. It crosses my mind literally 100 times a day.

I hope you find the best path for your life. The fact that you got good grades while you didn't even like being there says that you are smart and can do anything you want. Literally anything. Good luck

Girl same, everything you said. Except.. I finished nursing school and I wish I quit after Med-Surg. I did it for my Filipino mom, who is also a nurse. I can't even bring myself to apply for nursing jobs now, so I apply to others even if the pay is significantly lower and I'm getting pressured my parents to quickly find a job. I'm coping, but thanks for sharing. It's nice knowing I'm not alone here :).

I totally get what it's like to feel pressured by your parents. In the end it is 100% your life and you are worthy of making your own decisions! Wishing you all the best 💜
