The best thing about the Genesis version is that it has an ending. It looks like it was plucked straight from the show's storyboards too. It's bittersweet, since the show itself was never completed, but I highly recommend it for fans of the show who want to know what the final scene would've looked like.
The Game Grinder me too I have the episodes and to me it had a lot of potential but like many good stories the producers I think didn't have faith in it
@@AshTheDuke It was a key to open a room where the 13 treasures of Ruul are supposed to be place. It is there where the ritual to banish the Dark Water is performed
One of my favourite cartoons as a child that no one seems to remember Niddler was always my favourite character, also loved the Mysterious Cities of Gold which most people don’t seem to remember either
The Genesis game was more of a way to wrap up the series since it was cancelled. You find the other half of Ren's sword, you get all 13 treasures and you defeat the dark dweller. Basically the beat em up while great, plays more like one of the episodes dealing with Bloth. Overall both are great, snes game is 2 player. Sega game is 1 player but both are fine to the show.
@@theblocksays No, she is playable. Both titles allowed you to play as all three. The Genesis title was nice because it also included the character background information from the production notes and RPG.
I am so glad you mention the speed, because that is the first thing I noticed. It looks fast and responsive, something I always look for in an action game, especially SNES. Gonna add it to my log. Don't wanna impose but I recommend the beat em' up Growl for a Segadrunk video in the future. You save animals from poachers and they explode when you defeat them. What more could you want? ha! Keep up the videos bud!
One of my FAVORITE SNES games and the show was great too! I actually still have the cartridge and play it every now and then. The music in the game is pretty dope!
I've only been able to beat this all the way through on one credit with Ioz. He's sooo powerful and slams enemies into each other. He can keep racking up massive points with his grab. Never mind that he's slow, he can dash. I never use the desperation attack either. You have to learn to block in this game, something a lot of beat'em ups seldom give you. Ren and Tula are too weak for their own good, but I hope to do 1cc the game with them, too. The game is monotonous, but satisfying as all hell once you lure and toss the enemies into the pits. It's definitely a snes classic.
How the heck did they translate "monkey bird" (2:50) to "monkey cat" in my language? That was the word they used in the show for those flying monkeys over here (well, actually, the word did also mean "small monkey", about 150 years ago, but that still does not make much sense). Well, it's good to see that the original name made more sense.
yep, the only problem was that it tends to get a bit monotonous, like Final Fight 2, and the X button doesnt make a big difference. It would have been cool that they added some combinations with X for other special attacks
So Ioz makes this game for me. His throw with his heavy attack button just spikes guys into the ground, which is satisfying in its own right, but with the pitfalls and ground traps, it's very satisfying spiking someone straight down into a pit or onto a firetrap or whathaveyou. So good.
This was one of my favorite short lived series. The animation was incredible and as you said the story line was good. Luckily I didn't pay $60 for the game, the dvds cost more! Regardless it was money well spent.
I do love that a vintage '90s Nicktoon reference during a review of a Super Nintendo game based on a cult classic Hanna Barbera cartoon almost resulted in you spitting out your Cap'n Crunch. The nostalgia is strong with this one...
Your reviews are the best. I would love to see you do a top 50 games, you seem to really know most of the games including foreign ones. I think that would also draw in a lot of views.
Ha ha...I'd like hear you do a drunk-voice count down also! Just don't drag it on too long. It'd get annoying to hear after awhile: " Ffffooourrrrtyyyyy OOne...."
The SNES PoDW is a solid game IMO. It has an awesome soundtrack, the controls are pretty simple, and has an easy-medium difficulty when it comes to Beat'em ups. It also has a small, yet competitive speedrunning following that has the top players beat the main run in just under an hour! (I'm currently 2nd place @ 57:58 for my PB)
Played through this one last year; it's pretty cool but maybe a little long I often wished there was a Martial Law beat em up because of seeing the show...Tim Curry was in that one, too!
the sega one i use to burn it up when i was a kid i was like 7 years old when i beat it and i loved it and the music its a long game and very difficult
its my favourite beat'n'up on snes.... Definatelly deserves a remaster with some rpg elements like leveling and item use just to tweek it up, the level design is marvelous and inspiring... The enemys are repetitive, but its tematically coherent since you're on a all out war with the same pirate crew from start to finish while the do hire local mercenarys to help beat the heroes (yes, that is canonical).
Sunsoft were the kings of good licensed games in the 8 and 16-bit era. When Sunsoft died out, the expectation that you could frequently find a licensed game worth play pretty much died and fell in the ditch with them.
It doesn't have items, which makes the same enemies boring. They get much more ruthless because they learn to dash at you later and there's little you can do to stop them. Otherwise, it's very similar.
I had this game when I was a kid, and come to thing of it, I think I still have it up in my room. This game is is an unabashed rip off of Streets of Rage and Final Fight. However it's one of the best rip offs of the two best games in that genre. I loved it and played the hell out of it. Ioz was usually my guy but I would also play as Ren too.
It's kind of ironic how nowadays $60 for a 16-bit cartridge is considered expensive, when back then games typically sold at $70-$80. When you factor in inflation, games were crazy expensive by today's standards. No wonder the majority of us would stick with rentals- it's all we could afford.
revisiting my old games, i actually bought a copy, special order when i was 16? idk 25+ years ago maybe for $70.... i still have the game with the box and manual(s) not sure why i have two lol
Me too. And it's not the only time this happened. Some other shows and video games that were good and exciting ended up stopping on either cliff hangers or hitting walls. Like 2002 He-Man, 2011 Thundercats, the action Teen Titans, and the Tell Tale video game of Game of Thrones. What is wrong with the world these days?
If you watch the cartoon (spoiler alert) the sword was the only gift given to Ren by his father, the king, before he died. Ren hung on to it out of sentimental value. He goes across the world looking for the 13 treasures of rule. In one (amazing!) episode he finds a secret cavern that has indentations to put the jewels into and make the dark water receed. The literal key to get into the cavern and activate the gems? The broken sword. Turns out it was just as important as the jewels themselves.
as a fan of both the show and this game, im grateful you paid this all such great lip service since channels like ScrewAttack have only ever shit on this game without any care about its own merits or the source material it represents. If anyone else needs convincing its basically pirate themed final fight with a dedicated sword button and pits you can throw enemy's down, its a solid good time ^^
this game was so good.. until it decided it wanted to try to be a platformer, completely ruined it for me. if this game didnt have bottomless cliffs and stuck to its other(very clever) 'traps' it would be the best beatem up on snes, but as it is i think its crap.
actually played both and they both not good games and im an beat em up fiend..the snes version looks the part but it just a beat em up..heaven knows why sega too the left with their version...
If I had to compare both of these games I would say the one in the super Nintendo is not fun I've completed both of them. The one in the Sega Genesis I've completed probably 20 times over like 20 years cuz it's actually fun. The super Nintendo game is a chore and I don't think I'll ever be playing it again. This game is just redundant some beat them ups are just inherently fun like Streets of rage or hyperstone heist but not this one
