  • Mastering the tobacco pipe takes time. The tobacco pipe is a finicky little thing when you first start out, but once you understand how to pack it, light it, and enjoy it, there's another step that takes you even further, and I think makes the pipe an even more important part of life.

“Did this take a turn you weren’t expecting?” Nope fully anticipated the derailment, i started watching this channel bc i was considering taking up pipe smoking, was pleasantly surprised when all your videos derailed into observations on life. It kinda makes sense though, pipes have always been associated with relaxing and reflection or deep thought.

Ive been having the same experiences you addressed in your video while smoking cigars. Some of the best conversations with men ive had in the last few years take place easily while sitting around with a Cigar. Now i just found an old pipe my dad had used in the army and have started the process of learning the finer ways of smoking like Gandalf. Great video and I 100% agree about its usage for self reflection and getting to know other people better in a relaxed non threatening atmosphere.

It's crazy, but after picking up my first pipe, my ma commented on how much the aroma and atmosphere at my house reminded her of her father, who had long since passed away before I was born. She would tell me stories about how he would come home and smoke a bent billiard or his prize meeschaum in the evening while she and her sisters would help my grandmother get dinner ready. She tells me constantly how I remind her of her dad more and more everyday. Her dad supported a family of 6, having married my grandmother after returning from World War II where he was a bomber pilot. He went on to work as a commercial airline mechanic in Tennessee which is where my mom was born. It's crazy to think about how much history came out of me just picking up a pipe and reminding my mom of her childhood.

I just took up a pipe today, being in the uk, it’s not a regular thing here, although the massive resurgence in stoicism for men in the uk, it’s still ok to do, but I completely resonate with this vid, for the first time I just sat and thought about stuff while I smoked on my pipe, it was the first “smoking” experience (short of the alternativeive smoking experiences while I was addicted) where I just enjoyed the experience rather than it being a reactionary or a cigarette to satisfy my nicotine addiction, I truly enjoyed it and it was incredibly relaxing. And the experience alone is worth committing to. Great vid by the way, completely made sense to me

Omg... I'm thinking about getting into pipe smoking because I smoke 20 hand rolled super fat cigarettes a day. I love nicotine and and find it hard to give up. And I was looking at this as a stepping stone to giving up. You made me realise that the physical smoking a cigarette has no pleasure for me except the nicotine hit.
If I could make smoking an event..... A time of reflection.... A time to think.... It would benefit me a million times more than just smoki g cigarettes for the sake of it.
    Thank you.

True enough. I smoked cigarettes for 20 years before completely quitting 15 yrs ago. Breaking that addiction was the best thing I've ever done. Only speaking for myself here, I think breaking the cigarette inhalation addiction was pretty much essential for me to be able to enjoy the occasional non-addictive (no cravings or compulsions) pipe experience today.

I love taking time to smoke my pipe, it's a great reflection time, don't forget to focus on the wins too! Also, it's good for story telling time, and I like pointing with it! I just had a 5 day camping trip on the west cost of Vancouver Island here and while sitting on the beach with a campfire I made time to take a mental image of where I was and what I was doing, I studied the light, the fog, the way the fire lit up the logs around me, the sound of the waves crashing. It was the most "in the moment" I have been in ages, and pipe smoking was part of that.

Speaking of why we smoke pipes. I've written a whatchamacallit about that exact subject. Hope you enjoy it.
If you will. My feeble offering.
    Brotherhood of the Briar.
Taking up my pipe. Tapping it's bowl. Checking it's draw like kissing an old friend. Carefully feeding the bowl taking care not to deprive nor to over feed it's mouth with the slightly moist, richly perfumed, well cured leaf. Trusting your fingertip to let you know when it's enough or if it requires another pinch.
Giving it, it's first blush of life with the virgin leafs first taste of flame. It's first ephemeral breath plumes from it's mouth in a thick white cloud that briefly broadcasts it's invisible presence to those close by teasingly perfuming their senses with it's coming existence.
Using that same finger to tamp down the already burnt still warm crust until it forms a life extending coal that will hold the life of fire and flame within the busom of the pipes bowl. And with each puff, every slight sweet pull through the stem gives and extends it's life.
The crinkle of the newly burning leaf and the rhythmic pull and pause of the cherisher of this temporary yet beautiful life. With every smooth soothing draw white plumes of aromatic smoke crawl through the air in thick rich cloudy rivers that broadcasts it's aroma over it's temporary realm.
Strangers will stop and thank the smoker for returning the memories of their parents or grandparents to their souls through the aroma of his smouldering leaf and igniting wonderful memories seemingly long lost in the sea of their past. While the very same smoker embraces his own rich memories that the aroma invokes.
It's a type of time machine, a very comforting one at that. One that can not only conjures past memories to the forefront of many of the minds that it touches. But it also slows down current time. By it's very nature it's a time consumer, a time extender. It stalls the fast paced speed of life and forces it to slow down over it's invisible speed bumps. There is a pace, an unheard beat, and rhythm of life that has to exist for anyone riding this time machine and to gain all it's hidden benefits.
Time to think, time to reflect, time to take stock and put everything into a rational perspective. Time to enjoy tasks completed and to lament those left undone. Time to plan, time to strategize. Time to feel. Time to dream.
In groups it's gives you time to listen and quite all those voices in your head, that drown out the conversation, telling you what you should say next instead of hearing what is being said now. It gives you pause to think before you speak knowing that those like minded people around you are not going to rush you. It gives you time to formulate an answer and to to avoid making an irrational knee jerk response.
It's an old friend who fits comfortably in your hand giving you a slight warmth and a pleasant scent. It's a thinking man's friend. A contemplative man's companion. A dreamers muse. It's the soul of a brotherhood. The Brotherhood of the Briar. Dave Copple.

It’s hard to verbalize things like this or to put into some sort of context why something like enjoying a pipe or a cigar are so important. It forces you to sit still and in this world today it’s nice to be able to be singularly focused and not so darn distracted.

I remember as a child my grandfather smoked a pipe. When I was younger I smoked cigarettes, and occasionally smoked cigars/pipes, and did chew. I quit in 2006, then last year I got into cigars. Nice way to relax with a drink, but quickly noticed how expensive they are. Last time I ordered cigars from thompson cigars I ordered some pipe tobacco to get free shipping, then quickly realized how much further my money went with pipe tobacco compared to cigars. Now I seem to only be using pipes instead of cigars, just tried flake and plug. Curious about taking aromatic tobacco and pressing it into plugs, and cutting some off and keeping in a tin. The company wholeleaftobacco is in my zip code so it would be easy to get bulk tobacco to flavor and press for the cost of a few cigars, seems like a no brainer to me.

i have recently started pipe smoking. i have an issue. i can't taste anything when i smoke. i've tried just normal unflavoured burley and something more aromatic. i tried puffing slowly, harder, with and without the breath method,... nothing. no matter what, all i can taste is warm ash. no nutty, earthy tones, no aroma.
am i doing something wrong or is pipe smoking just not for me?
here's the weird thing. if i suck air through my empty pipe, i DO taste something that i can describe as nutty and earthy, but i imagine you're not supposed to just suck air through an empty pipe to get the flavour.
    any help?

You can trans into a professional at that. In reality you won't be a professional but that doesn't stop a lot of other people letting their imaginations run wild and transitioning into all kinds of things disregarding reality.

What's the make and model of your favourite pipe in the video? The bent billiard shaped one, thanks.

I like your video and I like your style. I also agree about contemplative pipe smoking and self-evaluation - crucial. I like the project (bettering oneself). I subscribed and I may try the discord thing. Your editing is also easy to watch. I like this content so much, I am willing to look past you scorching the hell out of your tobacco with a cigar torch and preferring a rusticated Grabow Savoy over a quality instrument. Thank you for the video, sir. I'm in.

Smoking my pipe right now. It was a basic pipe I got at a tourist shop in Israel. Bought a bag of tobacco and it went a long way for surprisingly cheap (Good Stuff). Been looking into other pipes like churchwarden. Should also probably look into a cleaning kit 😭 love the black finger though

LOVE this channel, but I feel like this is something each individual has to figure out on their own. I can smoke Virginias all day, one bowl after another of Capstan Blue and never get tongue bite, whereas the next piper can't.... It's all subjective.

“I believe that many who find that "nothing happens" when they sit down, or kneel down, to a book of devotion, would find that the heart sings unbidden while they are working their way through a tough bit of theology with a pipe in their teeth and a pencil in their hand.”
