    I'm guessing the film's technical advisor was a Southwest Airlines pilot, in which case taking off into a thunderstorm instead of waiting it out on the ground makes perfect sense.

    • @blusky7072
      @blusky7072 3 года назад +59

      Actually flying into a thunderstorm is against FAA rules. They are supposed to fly around them, if possible. The downdrafts are the reason and can push an aircraft into the ground if the storm is strong enough.

They will do all their best hunting and reach its top speed otherwise impossible for them if it wasn't for the storm. Bc they realize that once they are inside the storm they see better than anyone possible looking into the storm.

    As a long time airline captain, I can tell you that everything about this scene is made up Hollywood bull stein. Trust me, the LAST thing you do in moderate turbulence is speed up. That intensifies the effect of the turbulence on the airplane and you risk potential structural damage.
    Furthermore, no Pilot in his right mind would thread the needle like that between two thunderstorms when you could easily take a 45 degree turn to the right and go around the entire system.
    Better yet, just stay on the ground and wait 20 minutes for the system to clear out of the way.
    But that would make for a boring story.
    At least the acting was good….

    • @Samjones11203
      @Samjones11203 6 лет назад +22

      But just have some common sense for a moment please... I am telling you as a training captain with over 13000 hours on the 737, that a hard landing is much safer than a soft one, as there is less chance of floating and using up more runway. In the case of Luton, the landing distance is only about 1300m, which is very little, so a hard landing needs to be performed to ensure a safe stopping distance. Do not get carried away with people saying that a soft landing is perfect, because if you are on a flight that has a oft landing, that was a bad landing. I quote from the flight crew operations manual produced by Boeing, "All pilots must ensure that a safe stopping distance is achieved upon landing. This is primarily done as a result of a firm/hard landing being achieved. Boeing© developers recommend that a landing should not be softer than approx. 1.2G and no greater than approx. 1.8G (B738 MLG approx. 3.8G). The B738-CFM56-7B27 should achieve a stopping distance with no less than a subtraction of 15% of the calculated stopping distance on the Boeing© OPT, and the landing distance must not exceed an addition of 8% to the calculated stopping distance." This shows that the 737 is meanr to be landed hard. IF you try to land soft, then a lot more than 8 percent will be added to the landing distance

    • @leeeastwood6368
      @leeeastwood6368 6 лет назад +3

      common sense is for people like you! me, I'm a miserable old fart who wants to land on a feather pillow!! :-)
      seriously, I,ve flown with a few different airlines. while I've never landed on a feather pillow, twice with Ryanair I've limped off the aircraft with a bad back. if I have a choice of airlines, I always try to fly with a US airline! just my opinion of course!

    I was flying a V-tail Bonanza over the Donner Pass one New Years eve, on a long distance flight from Florida, when I encountered the most severe turbulence I've ever flown in, w/ 50-100 ft. changes in elevation occurring in the blink of an eye. Thankfully, I always wear my safety belt or I would have been slammed into the roof and maybe knocked out. As it was, I came into Rialto airfield w/ 50-60 knot cross winds and just managed to put it down and requested assistance w/ the tie down, as I was flying alone. It took everything I and the flight deck guy had to secure it, but after 10 minutes it was secured, but it wasn't necessarily on the ground, but kinda floating on its tie downs. When I did a post-flight inspection the next day, I found the port wing tip was missing its red lens and the housing was bent in a bit. It only dawned on me why that lens was missing once I was in the air again - that lens had made contact w/ the ground when I made my landing!?! My heart beat a little faster for a few minutes, but I remember smiling to myself, knowing/feeling I had somehow cheated death.

      They were both bad pilots -- flying at max speed in heavy turbulence is a great way to break the airplane -- they should have been slowing down, not speeding up. Poor judgement. Not only that but his Cockpit Resource Management (how well you work with your copilot), was terrible.
      The 1st Officer was also bad -- he allowed himself to be intimidated by the Captain, and didn't push back when the Captain broke the rules and exhibited poor judgement.
