I did some work for a guy who couldnt talk, well apart from grunting. he needed 24 hour care and everyone talked over him. So I sat on the floor in front of him, worked through what was needed, and asked him as many questions as I could . Amazed at how we got on so well, the guy thanked me via a tablet voice machine thing when I was doing the work a few weeks later - the thing of it is, he could communicate perfectly well if only people took the trouble to understand him, Poor sod. Good you two are making the best of it, too.
I think one of the biggest fears when it comes to this is other people. It's a real shame. I am actually writing a will that will include all kinds of things in case I can't communicate properly. I know people with whom a few days would make me want to kill myself, but since I am unable to do so, I need to make it very clear in my will that I can be at least left alone.
My husband and I were setup on a blind date by my mother in 1985. He had a diving accident in 86 which left him a C4-6 quad. He was just 24 yo. He is now 59 and incredibly healthy! ❤️
@@dianajames4717 If you love someone, I dont think it would change the love. There are a lot of people married that are not actually in love, just married cause they get on with the person and are expected to be married by family and friends and dont want to be out of the norm.
@@joemyers8289 I can't believe how common it is, to be married. People just hate being alone I guess... I prefer being alone, single, doing whatever the hell I want whenever I want. I just can't feel completely myself if someone else is around.
Well done ladies! Some great resources you've provided as well. Forty years a quad, there's always something new to learn. Abby and Jenny, you're both amazing and choose to handle this thing with dignity and style - God Bless you both, always!
RUclips's algorithm somehow brought me to 2 beautiful & charming ladies. Your words, supernova smiles, and heartfelt sharing of your life experiences, has touched my soul to its very core. Isn't communication grand? No matter the subject, or life challenge, it is fundamental to mutual understanding & life's progress, growth,& happiness. You both have so much to be proud of. My life has been irrevocably altered, by your stories, hope, character, and smiles. God Bless you both for your gift of sharing, phil
Thank you very much for answers to common problems that you must handle everyday. You’re both admirable and inspirational. The world is a better place with you in it.
Your comment about thanking God for the ability to poop and to pee is no joke. The things we take for granted. That was a very informative and encouraging video. I look forward to the day when all people will be able to walk, run and enjoy life to the full! Isa 35:5 All the best to both of you!!
Dad was a doctor. I knew a lot of this medical stuff from a very early age. Thanks for sharing your stories. Very courageous and inspiring. I’ll be tuning in often for a dose.
I have worked on a rehab unit. But much of the information you gave was very informative and for me updating since it was 20+ years ago. Thank you ladies.
Thank you both for making this video! Such a great way to educate folks. I had the mitrofinoff procedure as well, and that alone gave me more independence than anything else. It was life changing. I did want to point out that you said quads are c1-c7 but there are actually 8 cervical nerves! I'm a c8 quadriplegic. It is a common misconception because there are only 7 vertebra in the cervical spine, but 8 corresponding nerves. The vertebra is just the bone that protects it. You can actually damage your vertebra (spine) without actually hurting the spinal cord. So confusing lol!
We all know social media is, too frequently, used for "evil." However, videos like this are incredible. I was one of the ones, when I was younger, who thought "quadriplegic" was anyone like Christopher Reeve, where neither legs nor arms could move (though I knew a trach wasn't a given for quadriplegics). Jump forward to the internet and people making educational videos...so we all can learn injuries and illnesses are not cookie-cutter. I know most of us know that but videos like this fill in so many blanks and answer questions we didn't consider asking. I used the internet in the dial up days but reading about things doesn't always have the same impact as hearing people explain their own experiences so I, truly, thank you both, and all others, for sharing with, and informing, us.
I don't know how this video showed up in my feed but man, am I GLAD it did! All my questions answered (mostly) and in a way that both the person with the injury and someone without can understand. Thank you so much...
You are both an inspiration, to all walks of life. Our body is a shell, which in no way defines us. There are wealthy people who never have to shop for groceries, wash their own car, balance a check book (etcetera). Their 'ease of life' can be perceived to be better than my life. But, it is not true. It is just a different experience that i have, than they have. Both of our life's are valid, purposeful, and as meaningful as we make it to be. I am not the most handsome person, but that has nothing to do with who i am, and most importantly - my self worth, and how God values me!
This has been “awesome” Jenny and Abby. Thanks for the excellent education and your candid responses, laced with some humor, addressing difficult questions. God Bless you both! 😘
Great video, thanks! Speaking of driving, I'm a medic for a race track, and we actually have a couple of guys that come race that are quadriplegic. Their cars are modified with hand controls and they're just as fast as anyone out there.
I'm 76 years old and I've seen a lot in life. I was a Marine infantry officer for 21 years with 3 years in combat. I lost a of Marines killed and horribly wounded, some of which were way beyond the disabilities of these to lovely women. If I were single now (I'm 77 and I have a lovely wife of well over 40 years), I would be glad to help these women with whatever challenges they have if for no other reason to honor the Marines who were so horribly wounded in Vietnam and whose wounds were far more horrific with arms and legs blown off or unable to do anything to care for themselves including eating and drinking. Brain trauma injuries so severe that they have no idea who their families are. I so admire the courage and strength of these two women. I wish I could help them have a better and more enjoyable life.
Two beautiful ladies! Thank you for opening up and sharing with us all. I sadly must admit that I don’t know much about these injuries. I think your both extremely strong and genuinely good people. Thank you for your courage and opening up and sharing with us. Thank you ladies ❤ your both beautiful!

This was such an enlightening video, ladies. It certainly made me more aware of the complex and varied symptoms of quadriplegia. It's great to see the advancement in technology and biology aimed at independence and autonomy. I do have a question: How challenging is diet and exercise with a limited range of movement? Thanks for sharing.
Abby. You're so beautiful. I feel like I learned a lot from watching this video. I am a support care provider. I do get lost in my work. I clock in and I clock out. But just watching you talk and listening to you guys, it opens up my perspective. so yeah much love and thank you for making this video.
I had full blown GBS in 1977. I was totally paralyzed and on a ventilator for a month then slowly got better. Now, 45 years later, I'm still getting nerves to heal. Good Luck, Rick
Great and informative video. Thanks. Neuropathic pain sucks, but not as bad as the Autonomic Thermoregulatory Dysfunction where the body has difficulty balancing heating and cooling. I find heat the worst, similar in principle to MS I think albeit with a slightly different modality. Incomplete C7 here.
Have either of you looked into methods of healing your injuries? 1) the surgery where they insert an electrical instrument that stimulates blood flow and electrical signals thru the spine. It's based in Australia and 60 Minutes Australia has a show on it. 2) IASIS Microcurrent feedback: this stimulates the brain to heal an injuries...great with strokes too. 3) Long term water only fasting: this triggers autophagy which cleans out the cell and heals the body. Both of you look and sound terrific. God bless you for taking lemons and turning them into lemonade:+) God bless~
You guys are wonderful and I SO admire your attitudes and smiles considering your injuries! I am so glad that you can get together and truly understand how the other feels. Big thumbs UP for you both!! I guess one never knows, but I have told my husband that I do not want to live if I were in that condition and it is POSSIBLE to make that decision! I KNOW where I am heading when I die and am not afraid to die but I cannot imagine, where WE live and what we do as ranchers, being able to continue living here with that type of injury, or my husband having to ranch and still do what it takes to deal with a wife who is injured in that manner. I really can't imagine doing that?

Thank you, ladies, for sharing such intimate information for us normies haha. I love learning this type of interesting information about people who have different levels of physical or neurological abilities.
I have a question. You both are in a wheel chair but you both drive. How do you get from your wheelchair to the front seat? Or from the front seat to the wheel chair.even if you could slide from your wheel chair to the front sear, how would you get you wheelchair in the back on the vehicle without leaving the front seat Or do you have a lifter at the back of he van and maybe you slip into the drivers seat that way? Lastly, what was the name of that pee procedure that you both had done?
