ööööööh... i think at home but I can't remember when being short before my 40ies and havin watched it countless times 😂😂 but I'm pretty sure I watched it years later being 4 years old 1987 😂😂
I was a kid when it came out in theaters, and when it became available to rent, my dad would NOT let me and my younger sister see this. First time I saw glimpses of the actual movie was when my parents, grandparents and aunt and uncle were all watching it in my grandparents' living room and they told us we couldn't watch it with them. I think I was 8 or 9. I finally watched it when I was 10 and it was that perfect balance of horror and action movie I only got from the Terminator and Alien's. It's definitely a classic for me, I've returned to it many times over the years as well as the sequels, even read some Alien vs Predator stuff from Dark Horse, played a few of the various games etc. The Predator is a fascinating horror antagonist, a combination of out of this world technology and raw physical power. Like you saw how that thing beat the sh*t out of Dutch at the end with its bare hands, no enhancements, no tech. And every new entry in the movies, and expanded media sheds more light onto them, you learn a little bit more about them
I saw it in the theater opening weekend when I was 14 with my dad. Best movie ever. It’s so good and timeless. I even remember the trailer that came before it. It was revenge of the nerds 2. I was hooked on Arnie ever since.
The predator is a hunter and a warrior, the reason it didn't just kill Dutch is because he posed the best challenge he has faced since his time there. He recognised him as a warrior and someone to have a genuine 1 on 1 fight without the technological advantage.
yea i was wondering, too. they seemed not to get this warrior-attitude, same/already with the last-stand scene of Billy. is it so outdated nowadays? dunno
Fun fact. They used a voice actor for most of the predators vocalizations. Specifically the various levels of crackling sounds it makes. That actor is Peter Cullen, who is most famous for being the voice of Optimus Prime.
I always thought they used the weird sounds that ravens and Aussie crows make If you sit and listen to them, they make that exact same clicking, churrrling sound (I don't know what else to call it) It did crack me up when you guys reacted and said "why is that such a commonly used Sci fi monster sound?" Because of this movie!! 😂 Everything since has been an imitation of these classic 80s movies
Cullen originally passed on the job, because when he did the vocal effects for King Kong in the 1976 movie, the inside of his throat was bloody from all the growling and roaring he did. Then Cullen saw what the Predator looked like and signed on immediately.
There was a key line I think you guys missed where Arnold said to Anna: "He didn't kill you because you weren't armed. No sport." Then you see it preparing Billy's skull and admiring it as a trophy. Those were the two main things that solidified that this is all a game to the Predator. That's why he wanted to face Arnold "man to man" after he had put up a good fight.
It's funny, but I notice a lot of reactors, even the one's paying close attention, completely miss this point. It's like they hear it, but a lot of folks seem to think it's a throwaway line.
100% I think what surprises me most about modern reactors and their questions, is that i saw this movie when i was a CHILD, and understood practically everything about it. Hunting for sport. Going on safari. Hand-to-hand for honor. Billy's Native American ability to sense things. Trophy hunting. Mimicry as a kind of birdcall ("over here.") Billy's sacrifice. Even the predator trying to communicate at the end, by saying back the same sounds he heard "Whatthehellareyou." (like i do when I talk back to my dog, by mimicking the same noise he made at me) i pretty much had ZERO questions or confusion...i just wanted more. I guess today's audiences just arent used to going into a movie blind and having to figure anything out.
I think it's because the concept of sport hunting is completely unknown to them. This is partly because they're women, but mostly because they've probably grown up in an urban environment. And ideas that used to be recognizable in pop culture, like the man on safari in Africa or the room with animal heads on the wall, are just not part of pop culture anymore.
@@daerdevvyl4314 I think it's a combination of age and culture. Back when I was a kid, I didn't have the internet and all these videos....I had to use my imagination. There is so much readily available information now that the newer generations don't really have to figure out things so when they're presented with information without being explicitly told what it is, they're baffled by it. Like they questioned the beginning of the movie and whether that was the Predator being dropped off. Well, the Predator is obviously an alien....and the movie starts with an alien spacecraft launching something that falls to the earth so yeah, I would assume that's the Predator being dropped off. They don't tell you, "hey, here's the Predator being dropped off" but when the Predator "uncloaks", you see he's an alien and that would then explain the opening scene.
@@fubar1217 It also probably has to do with the fact that this is a reaction. If one is reacting to a movie, they can't really absorb it in the same way as a passive watcher; they have to comment on it for the audience watching them as well as interact with any partners. That means you're going to miss some things or just not have time to fully process it in the moment.
Which was a big mistake. He and the rest of the cast got along really well. The only person he couldn't stand and almost got into a fight with was his bodyguard.
It always cracks me up when reactors are surprised at how smart the predator is. I mean, it's literally an alien whose civilization figured out interstellar travel, invisibility cloaks, and pulse laser weapons, among other things. Sheesh!
One of the greatest mid movie genre swaps in movie history. Starts out as a typical, bombastic, over the top 80's action movie. Then completely changes in a classic horror movie when the Predator takes out every group member one by one, untiull the final showdown with our protagonist. Its so well done.
The first couple of acts of the movie set up how tough and capable these men are, so when the Predator starts taking them out despite their best efforts, you really appreciate that they're up against something deadlier than anything on Earth.
@@Smido83 I think Predator does it better because 1. it sets it up without giving it away, and 2. it doesn't boast about it. I love the early Roberto Rodriguez movies, but they're essentially show-offs.
Particularly since Billy came across as the most ferocious of the whole team, but even he was brought down quickly. At least the Predator seems to have respected him enough to not just shoot him.
As I don't want to generalize, I want to see other women reacting to the movie to see if they also miss that. It was pretty obvious to me since I was a boy. Now I am interested to see if there is a difference between men and women understanding the predator motives
how does a kid get the movie but not these two? confusing?? I wrote that when the replies ^ were collapsed. (@roger saying the same thing before). Its so obvious he means hand to hand, its mentioned earlier thats why he didnt kill the girl bc she wasnt armed. Meaning some honor/rule system or something. I agree that boys would understand this concept more than women, however theyre pretty dumb this time. Theyre confused by the movie and asking if the beginning showed the alien coming to earth. Well obviously... Cleaning the skull is obviously making a trophy/collection/etc. Its a sentient predator hunting not for food.
@@jakobnunez4964 sometimes it has everything to do with it. Not sex. Gender. Like... we boys watching all the time movies and histories with such motiffs.
Predator 2 is well worth a watch in my opinion, a bit of an underrated movie where they keep the core concept but add a completely new setting and situation which makes it quite different from the first one. Would love to see you react to that one too. And it has Danny Glover so... :)
Predator 2 is super underrated. It has good action, memorable scenes of the city hunter and great acting from the lead actor Danny Glover. It was underappreciated probably due to the audience wanting Arnold to reprise his role as Dutch.
One of the absolute weirdest bits of trivia about this movie is that two of the actors in it - Arnold and Jessie Ventura (the guy who had a hole blown in his chest) - both became real life governors of states. Arnold was governor of California and Jessie Ventura was governor of Minnesota. I'm not sure if any other movie ever made can claim that same distinction.
Billy facing off the Jungle Hunter is like drawing first blood. Billy wounded himself and denied the Jungle Hunter the satisfaction of drawing first blood. And that's why, beyond Dutch, Billy was the most prized skull trophy.
The Yautja is an honorable creature. It took off all its gear to fight Dutch in a fair fight because it deemed him worthy of that challenge. It also was scanning his skull at the end for a trophy. Its a young blood that goes out to hunt worthy prey so as to gain esteem among its clan. The predator franchise is good and I would also recommend you to watch Aliens Vs Predator.
I will always love that final close up shot of Arnie's face at the end. It's clear he's immediately suffering from PTSD. This was the mission that broke him.... And it took an Alien to do it.
@@jasontoddman7265 It's part of the brilliance of this movie that the first two acts build up what total badasses this group of men are, how they're a match for anything on this Earth. So when the Predator starts to take them down, you feel truly helpless and afraid. Because if this thing is even more terrible than they are, what chance would any of us have?
@@danieldickson8591 Heh. Being an older male in declining health who has never carried a gun except in basic Military training nor a knife since I was a teenager *I* wouldn't even be worth the Predator's time or effort. So I might have a better chance than Arnie and his pals just because I'd basically be hopelessly pathetic in the eyes of any self-respecting Predator that saw me. But I get what you're saying. But a Predator would in fact not scare me as much as most other movie monsters would simply because the others are far more indiscriminate in their choice of victims.
Predator 2 is in my opinion underrated. I love it., as a sequel to a really good and unforgettable movie is very good. Changes rainforet to the concrete jungle. And it has Bill Paxton too, in which he... well, takes part of the three great franchises...
@@edudario1974 Of course it’s understated what did you expect no Arnold S on predator 2 tho it would be more interesting if they would added more continue for Arnold that was like the main hit for this movie continuing the story how he would get more revenge for these aliens
The whole vibe and tone of this movie is fantastic. It holds up extremely well imo. It has that super creepy, ominous, mysterious atmosphere and the performances are solid. It’s an iconic movie.
I love Dutch's learning curve in this movie. It felt gradual and earned. After every encounter he learned from his mistakes and adjusted his tactics accordingly. He even got the drop on the Predator more than once, so it didn't feel like his victory was completely unrealistic. And Arnold knew how dumb it would be if he just deafeated it no problem, and told the directors as much. I'm glad he had the humility to do so.
The fact you’re getting to 6-10 likes within 2 minutes makes me even more curious if people like you as in you’re a popular user on each RUclips or you’re using different accounts to like your comments.
He also struggles really hard for every victory. The Predator beat the shit out of him real bad throughout the film, Dutch was always on the back foot.
100% You can see it, even in the little things. He SPLITS OPEN his own grenade launcher shells and repackages them in non-metal leaves because he learned the predator can see the metal tripwires and claymore. THen he makes another boy-scout trap, because he learned the predator fell for the first one. In fact, I think even the PREDATOR under-estimated Dutch's learning curve because it didnt consider mud-insulation NOR Arnold in-the-tree.
Films were clever back then, by not explaining too much and allowing audiences to fill in the gaps, the majority of veiwers were never disappointed, people would just invent the coolest backstory
I like to think The Predator was based on a great piece of alien literature, much like Moby Dick, where a hunter is driven by his obsession to catch the massive hairless ape with the weird accent leading to his own downfall. Little predators raise their hand in class and ask "Miss, if he already had 5 skulls why didn't he turn back?" and the teacher will reply "ghgathatatatat"
this film has so many great little details, even though it comes across simple, must have been pretty tough to make, I mean just imagine putting those guys together in a jungle and having them chase around a giant guy in a suit..it could have easily been a disaster, one of my favorite scenes is Billy's spinal column getting ripped out and his body falling through the trees, they really worked hard on this film, and it doesn't age at all..I mean there's just nothing to age it, Aliens was made just a year prior and that drop ship scene looks laughably bad but yeah some things are way overly explained, it's an alien big game hunter basically, probably wanted to land in Africa to kill an elephant and lion but ended up in Colombia with..tapirs and guerillas, that AVP film had a pretty neat back story
@@aruiz90 Like the reason boba fett was cool was because of everything we imagined which we didn't see. Then they make a series about him and its like great he was a balding guy having a mid life crisis. Not quite what I had in mind.
A little bit of fun trivia for you -- Stan Winston was on an airplane next to James Cameron. He told Cameron he was working on a new monster character for the movie "Predator" and wanted to do something different. Cameron thought about it and went, "Well, I always liked mandibles, and you never really see creatures with those." Which is why the Predator has those distinctive mandibles.
The Predator hunts for sport and takes trophies, and the reason it fought with Dutch instead of just killing him is that it seen him as a worthy opponent for a fight as Dutch was a formidable adversary. In later Predator movies such as Alien vs Predator it proves that the Predators have been around for a long time making trophies of both humans and Aliens and they're not easy to take down.
Interesting that the girls couldn't understand why the Predator fought Dutch hand to hand instead of using its blaster. Every single guy who ever saw this film instantly understood the reason.
It's an action movie trope. If you haven't seen enough of these it might not be expected. They've been watching a lot of horror movies and usually the killer doesn't stop killing victims until they're dead. The Predator straight up executed everyone else so they didn't get why Dutch received special treatment. It's not a 'guy' thing it's an age and genre thing.
Nah, it's a guy thing. Women just want to be free from danger. Guys understand that conflict isn't 'only' about destroying your opponent, it's also about establishing who is the alpha and testing yourself. Every guy instinctively knows that the Predator wanted to level the playing field for this reason. It was already obvious to guy viewers when the Predator didn't attack the unarmed woman. @@lkf8799
Fun fact: Jean Claude Van Damme was originally cast as The Predator with a *very* different creature design. Jean Claude really didn't get along with members of the crew and the design. There's at least six conflicting accounts of what happened but ultimately he was canned. Kevin Peter Hall was cast and Stan Winston brought in to redesign the creature from the ground up.
Some non-spoiler info: The Predator comes from a warrior race where honor through killing the most challenging prey is basically their religion, and how they earn status in their society or "tribe". Humans are just some of the prey that they hunt. They don't want to kill all humans, hence why they leave unarmed women, and children alive, so that there are always plenty of us to hunt, plus there is no honor in killing helpless prey. The Predator's goal is to seek the MVP human by observing them in conflict, then use technology, stealth, agility, and even psychological taunting and confusion to set up its final battle by taking out all the other players, so it can have its ritual battle with the MVP. Alien is like an animal. It's goals are to reproduce and eliminate threats for survival. Predator is an advanced, intelligent humanoid being, who kills / hunts according to it's religion and culture. The second movie is a great sequel, and this time a new Predator, which is higher in the ranks of his own kind (aka more experienced), chooses Los Angeles as his hunting ground. It holds up well, gives some more lore info, but any of the other Predator sequels don't do it very well, I'm sad to say, except for the most recent one called "Prey" which is a prequel. The nerd guy Hawkins, or first one to die, also wrote the script.
Also, the yautja were enslaved by the amengi. If I recall correctly, they breed them to be big and strong and trained them to use tech. Not sure when this lore was made.
It's a little predictable, but Sonny Landham sells the character extremely well. You can feel that Billy is probably the most dangerous of all of them, he just keeps that part of himself under control. Better than the actor himself did, from all accounts.
If it hasn't already been mentioned, the actor who played the Predator (the late great Kevin Peter Hall) was also the black helicopter pilot at the end of the movie AND also played the Bigfoot, "Harry" in the John Lithgow film "Harry And The Henderson's".
It's weird you didn't understand he was sport hunting for trophies and to test itself, even as a kid it was crystal clear what the predators motives are . They even explain it in the film . Thanks for the reaction.
Yeah, they seem to want everything in a film delivered as an exposition dump, otherwise they don’t understand what’s going on. This was a bizarre reaction, watching the film-making concept of “show, don’t tell” being completely wasted on them. 🙄
So here are some of the tidbits of this movie. Predator is no doubt a guys film by the way so glad you guys appreciate it. It is a story about the Predator who comes to earth to come into his right of passage. A creature who trains on his own world and then comes to earth to take care of himself and to match anyone or anything that could possibly oppose him, after his kills or survival he can then return to his home with bragging rights and become a so called Predator worthy among his own peers. The self destruct device is them taking their lost or becoming their insurance policy if they feel they have failed into become a full up and coming Predator. By the way when the Predator removed his helmet it was him facing Arnold in a one on one fight. No tricks, no hiding, no weapons. That he found his one ranking adversary. Hope this helps you.
In explaining the Predator, I've sometimes found it useful to compare them to The Hirogen, in Star Trek: Voyager. Most Trekkies get it after that. Doesn't help if they're not a Trekkie though, then you stand a good chance of just confusing them further!
First the predator did face Arnols in battle one on one because it considered him a worthy prey for the hunt. The bomb is an insurance policy in case it fails?! Lol, then why does it have a timer? Does it want to taunt like a cartoon villain? The bomb is a fail safe device for the predator to destroy its body and any technology humanity could rip from its body and use against them. Someone once said it best: Arnold was supposed to kill it (which the predator thought would be impossible) but showed mercy, the predator is like: "You are a worthy of respect, but one of us has to die today. Let me die with the dignity I have left. (Sets bomb timer) Goodbye, it was a good hunt."
what do you mean is a guys film, I'm a girl and I LOVED it since I was a little girl. that is so stupid, just like people saying that star wars is for boys. no, I love the OT since I was 11 when I watched it.
This as the first film to use the "clicker" noises, that are crow/raven sounds, they also used other wild animals as audio for the Predator and because it all worked so well in this film; it has been copied in other Film/TV projects. I can't wait for you to see Predator 2, it will help fill in the lore you may have missed while viewing this film. Because of the ALIEN films you've seen, you can then continue with the AVP films, then the rest of the Predator films. Can't wait to see your reactions to them... :)
Actually the clicker noises that the predator does was produced by the voice actor Peter Cullen the same guy that voiced Optimus Prime for like forever. He got the inspiration from the things face. He said the face reminded him of a crab's face. And it brought him back to a memory when he was a kid on the beach and hearing all these sounds a horse-shoe crab was making while it was dying.
If you decide to continue with the series, with each film, a little more of the Predator’s history, motivation, and lore are given. Some of the sequels are good, others are not so good. My personal favorite is the third sequel, Predators! So I am always hopeful if they make another one.
Predator 2 is also really good. No Arnold, different setting, but still totally worth it. Having seen them all, I’d say watch Predator 2, Predators, and Prey. Can skip the others as, in my opinion, you aren’t missing much. All the Alien vs Predator movies were pretty paint by numbers to me.
Yes Predators is my favorite. I think I might love that movie almost as much as The original & I saw the original one 8 times at the movies as a Kid......The perks of living two houses down from the movie theater. 😂
Predator designed by the late Stan Winston. He was an American visual effects supervisor, makeup artist, and film director. He was best known for his work in the Terminator series, the Jurassic Park series, Aliens, the Predator series, Iron Man and Edward Scissorhands. He won four Academy Awards for his work.
I was lucky enough to visit the Predator filming location back in 2015. It's now a zip-line tourist attraction called Canopy El Eden, just outside of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. The enemy base camp seen at 10:11 is now a restaurant next to the river. They even have a life-sized statue of the Predator there!
Fun fact: anytime I play a game that has a helicopter mission, i will play "Long Tall Sally" during the mission, mainly because I wanna have me some fun 😄
The movie does seed what's happening. When Billy said "like a Hunter." That's the movie telling us what it is. When Anna tells us about the demon that takes trophies on hot summers, that's telling us it's hunting seasons. Watch AvP, it's not canon in either franchise but it's just a bit of fun.
So the reason the Predator removed it's gear to fight Arnold is cause once it noticed he was only human, and still gave it all that trouble it respected him enough to fight hand to hand. That's why it was looking at him like huh, get a load of this guy. Oh also watch Predator 2 and Prey. They are both great sequels.
Also, Billy challenged it to a no-guns fight by throwing away his rifle and, presumably, it gave him one given that we just heard a scream and no laser bolts.
@@AlexSwanson-rw7cvBilly's skull was taken and prepared for display, only the skulls of worthy prey are taken. Soft Meat skulls are pretty rare in Yautja collections so Billy put up a decent show.
1987, worked in a mall and was friends with movie theater manager, so after work one night, went and watched it. WOW! Stan Winston was (and always will be) the greatest real-effect creature creator! No CGI. The cloaking effect was all photographic effects. I would say watch Predator 2 next. It's a VERY different movie, but still a fun and suspenseful watch! Through the course of the movie, you will find out some answers to questions you had during Predator. I don't wanna give ANYTHING away, but .. ok. when it looks like it's the end for the protagonist, look closely at his surroundings and see if you see anything familiar from a couple movies I know you have already watched. The two of you are VERY smart and observant, I'm sure you will see it.😉
I was lucky enough to see this classic movie on the big screen on its release just like I saw the original Robocop , that was back when going to the cinema was fun , I'm very much looking forward to more top notch commentary from Hayley and Stella 👍
I mean the tickets are more expensive but its still fun although i agree with you a bit bc i like older movies more avatar is an exception cus i love those films but overall i think older movies are better
I love the scene where they hear "Contact!" and shooting and immediately just join in, no hesitation or questions asked, because they know it's probably worth flattening that entire side of the jungle for.
YES!!!!!!! MY FAVORITE ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER MOVIE OF ALL TIME!!! I watched this last night on Cinemax! They show this non stop every day on the channel.
23:45 "USE YOUR EARS BUDDY." 😂😂😂 First time my wife actually sat down and watched Predator she said something similar. Girls always stick up for each other. Lol
They used an actual heat-sensing camera (which was the size of a refrigerator at the time), but since it was so hot during the filming in Mexico the whole image was washed out and you couldn't make out individuals. So before using it they sprayed down the sets with cold water to establish a heat differential and then the camera could show the characters.
@@MorliHolectIneffective on their natural heat vision. Not a problem with the tech on their visors. That much was evident in this film. Perhaps more will be seen in the sequel. Hope the girls see it.
@@MorliHolect You can only say that sentence, because you know more about the Yautja. The movie don't give any hints that the Predator ever leaves, yes it hunts in hottest seasons, but that doesn't mean it left at all Earth. I am only saying these words if only knowledge is this original story for Predator. With later information yes it's clear now that it comes and goes from Earth.
@@Ryan_Christopher right, for all of their "primitive noble warrior" schtick they are totally dependent on some kind of image enhancement to tell them what to pay attention to. When the predator takes off his helmet we can see that what he actually sees in the world is just a washed out mess of red because the jungle is just as hot as a person. But the scanner determines if what it is looking at is part of the natural environment or not, and the boy scout snares didn't trigger it, and neither did the mud on Arnie's body. I'd assume actually AI from the way it works, and they're just hunting the way folks using GPS navigate by basically doing what the computer tells them to.
The Predator was played by Kevin Peter Hall. He was also the black chopper pilot at the very end. Hall also played Harry in Harry And The Henderson's. A family goes camping and finds Bigfoot, and bring him back to the suburbs with them. Mr Hall was over 7 ft tall so he easily got the "creature" roles. In the early 1990's he was in a bad car accident and rushed to the hospital. During surgery he was accidentally given contaminated blood and passed away. RIP Kevin Peter Hall, you're a Legend now.
Hawkins, the nerd with the glasses is screenwriter Shane Black who wrote among other things Lethal Weapon and Iron Man 3. 13:05 - that’s what I like about the movie. It would’ve been great as just a story about Arnie and his team. The addition of the Predator is icing on the cake!😁👍
Predator 2 is next and is great too.. looking forward to you two seeing it :) Right, the Predator arrived at Earth in the opening scene. And it was hunting for sport. The reason it took off its helmet at the end for a fist fight with Arnie was because it respected him so much. It probably also used blade weapons when fighting Billy.. even though we didn't see that scene. Dutch(Arnie) took the gun off Anna, because he already knew the Predator wouldn't attack her if she was unarmed.. and posed no challenge They have a great pride in honour.. a bit like the Klingons
Prior to shooting Jesse Ventura (who was an ex-navy seal and wrestler) and Arnold decided to have a bicep contest. Jesse thought he had the inside tract because he figured he would go to costume designers before the first rehearsal and ask them for Arnold's measurements. It turns out Arnold was a little smarter than Jesse estimated; Arnold had already convinced the entire wardrobe department to side with him and cut 5 inches off his measurements. Jessie built up to have 1-inch larger biceps, convinced he would win. When they showed up to the set Arnold measured out 3-inches larger than his competitor.
Amazing reaction. I recommend Hailey and Stella will react to the following Science Fiction films (outside of the Terminator, Alien and Predator films) such as _Arrival_ and _Blade Runner: 2049_ (both films directed by Denis Villenueve who did _Dune_ which Hailey and Stella reacted to), the original _Blade Runner, ET: The Extra Terrestrial, Minority Report, Ready Player One, _The Matrix_ films and _AVATAR_ (including its sequel, _The Way of Water)_
Re-watching this movie a few years ago, after not having seen it in a long time, gave me a much greater appreciation for real live-action effects and the stuntmen in these older films. All those fiery explosions and stunt people in the middle of them flying about is so impressive compared to the CGI and wire-work in front of a green screen we get today.
Also congrats on getting 250k subscribers today and it would be awesome if all four of you will do Netflix’s _One Piece_ series, as the series was just renewed for a second season 3-4 days ago.
All Predator and AVP movies start like some type of movie and change into something else. I love that they mostly stick with that style. Watch all of them, the latest ones kinda suck, but Prey as the last installment is back to the roots and pretty awesome.
One of the best action movies ever made. And after this debut the director made Die Hard, one of the best action movies ever made. And the mud works because it is part of a package called "plot armour". Fun fact: production was delayed which caused them to shoot on location from late summer to early autumn. Which meant that leaves were turning brown and falling off the trees. They couldn't afford to delay production any longer so they flew in plants by plane to use as set dressing in the jungle.
I am very glad and happy to see you guys react to this.. I sneaked out of the house when I was a kid 6-7 years in India back in 1995 to watch this movie.. Keep up your work ladies.. best of luck
Ladies Welcome to the world of Yautja! Yautja is the Predator Species, warring and hunting species. Predator in this movie was on a hunting expedition to collect trophies. Remember the beginning of the movie, small ship disembarking from the mothership towards Earth. Predator traveling to hunt in the jungles of Central America. Creature was created by late great special makeup artist, Stan Winston and his crew. Fun fact is that action actor, Jean Claude Van Damme was supposed to play the Predator, but he was let go by the producers because he was too short for the role. Then young African American actor named Kevin Peter Hall gotten the role as Predator because he stands at 7Ft 2inches. Plus, KPH also played helicopter pilot when helicopter picked up Dutch (Arnold) at the end. Sadly, KPH died from complications of AIDS tainted blood transfusion for surgery.
The Predator is simply a hunter, kind of like a human big-game hunter, hence the name, Predator. He was collecting trophies from his kills. He, or other members of his species, came to that jungle at regular intervals to hunt people, just like men go on hunting trips once a year to the same place.
The Predator is kind of an inaccurate name, chosen only because it sounds threatening, he doesn't eat his prey, he's just a hunter, which is probably why nobody ever actually calls it a Predator during the film.
The naming becomes something of an in-joke in a “later” film. Even in ‘87 we thought the name was inaccurate given how he collects skeletal trophies. But it would have been bad marketing to call it “Alien Hunter.”
@@jasondrake323 It really isn't. The word predator doesn't really indicate anything one way or the other about necessarily eating your prey any more (or less) than the word hunter does.
@@izzardclips9350 If you look it up it does. Predators are specifically animals that live by killing and eating other animals. While the definition of hunter has the reason for said hunt irrelevant.
That's a biological scientific term used for (wild animal) species endemic to Earth, it has other meanings. Literally it just means something that preys, for whatever reason.@@jasondrake323
Kevin Peter Hall played the preditor. He also plays the helicopter pilot at the end of the film. They wanted to make him visible. Elpidia Carrillo continued acting and also became a director and producer in Mexico. She also appeared in the Rolling Stones video of their song/video called, "Undercover of The Night." Great reaction y'all. As we say in Texas; y'all be safe.
My favorite scenes in the Predator movies are when you see the Predator/Yautja tending to his injuries. It shows he’s not like your standard unkillable mindless monster, and instead an intelligent sports hunter who relies on skill as well as strength
I doubt anyone has see it but that Spanish lady is in the movie Blue beetle she is the protogonists mother I believe, I was surprised when I found that out at first.
Here is the thing if it comes to "for that time, straight forward no backstory..." question. This movie gave every backstory needed. Alien comes from time to time to earth and hunts people during heat waves. Dutch and his team are special forces that get an asignment to free hostages in the jungle. They are established as highly effective and completely deadly when they take out like 100 guys in a couple of minutes. The Predator watches them and decides to take them all out as his pey. He also collects parts of their body's as trophys. What more backstory do we need? Its a "modern" thing that each and every little thing has to be explained. Today we would get a backstory to the hat Anna wore when we first met her and how her mother bought it for her shortly before she died or something... It bothers me so much how little modern Hollywood thinks of his audience. I dont need to know how the team was formed, what planet the Alien is from or why Dilon changed so much since working for the goerment... cause its completely irrelevant for the story! But if this movie wouldve been made today, thats exactly what would happen. This movie is 107 minutes long... today it would be 145...
Well it's pretty clear the girls have no idea about army movies like this. But I agree the movie gave all the explanation it needed, only thing I would little bit fix is the mission they were given even Dillon's role what he was looking for was left totally pointless. I would have made Dillon get his CIA papers or whatever he wanted there and then they get ambushed by the predator as a surprise event.
Actually they did get the info the CIA needed and stopped the bad guys before they could invade their neighboring country. That was explained in the movie!
Just, as a Predator afficionado, the Predator took Billy's spine and skull as a trophy because he was a worthy opponent, and fought on the Predator's terms. It was an honorific.
I think this movie is unique. It starts out as a typical 80s war movie and then changes genre and becomes a horrific gore monster film who also happens to be an extraterrestrial!! -OG
A little trivia for you. Later on when planning the Terminator movies they were trying to figure out the biggest most impressive fire arm to give the terminator. After a lot of discussion Arnold finally said check this out and showed them the chain gun from this movie. And Terminator history was made. Also in the scene where they are leaving one of the people in the helicopter was the man who wore the Predator costume. It was done as a thank you, job well done for the only person who didn’t get face time in the movie.
It's fun how much this influenced sci-fi. This I'm sure was somewhat of a trope before but the conscious lone apex predator as a concept is now just a given in most expansive sci-fi IP's. The Hirogen in Star Trek, the Trandoshan in Star Wars etc.
When Predator was released, GI Joe was at its absolute prime and this was the closest thing to a live-action GI Joe movie... with an alien thrown in for good measure. It was already a fantastic movie but IMHO the similarity to GI Joe really captured the imaginations of so many kids and teens .
Trivia note, James Cameron actually helped with the design of the predator He and Stan Winston, we’re on an flight together, and Stan Winston was sketching out ideas for the predator, and James Cameron suggested some thing with mandibles
Just to explain one big thing about this movie: this is a dude film masterpiece. It transcends time and space as an absolute classic guy film. Die Hard is as well, and its directed by the same guy.
Predator, Alien and Prometheus all take place in the same universe. There are several crossover films with Predators and Aliens, and one (I think) with the beings from Prometheus. James Cameron has said that The Terminator also is in the same universe.
Fun fact: There's a possibility that this movie takes place before the Terminator. Dutch was badly injured after the fight against the Predator. His body was probably sold to Cyberdyne.
Just correcting a little thing here: the Xenomorph from Alien did not kill for fun. It focused solely on survival and the reproduction of its species. It wounded Brett and Dallas and took them to be turned into eggs, as seen ih the Director's Cut. When it killed, it likely did it as a means to neutralize any threat to the eggs it was making. Parker was armed, so the Xeno had no reason to think Lambert wasn't either, so they both had to die. Again, it did not kill for fun. It was merely a creature of pure survival.
Fun fact, the insurance company hired a bodyguard to protect the crew from Sonny Landham, the guy that played Billy, bc they were scared that he would hurt someone
That is the urban myth. The real real is that you had a bodybuilder who had a reputation for being a-hole, a professional wrestler heel who was known for his talking, a football player, and 2 legitimate tough guy actors. Arnold encouraged everyone to work out with him. So you had a bunch of guys on a closed set. With the only distraction being proving how tough they were. That is why they were hired. Oh yes, I forgot to mention an up and coming actor who was a martial artist. Who was supposed to play the Predator. Who got kicked off the set because 1. his costume was unbearably hot and cumbersome. 2. He was rumored to be difficult on set.
19:04 yeah that’s actually accurate from all the military guys I’ve ever talked with who have actually served and been in live combat. If you split , and your guys starts mag dumping, you don’t question immediately. You regroup on their position and immediately let loose in his targeted direction until your immediate superior calls it. Then you can question what tripped him, while maintaining watch.
Predator and alien have such deep lore. I can't wait for you two to dive in and to learn all about it or as much as you can from the movies. Like the other comments mentioned. Predators are a warrior race who hunt for sport. If you prove yourself they'll show you honor with basically a 1v1 fight. Its all about hunting more difficult beings and becoming better warriors from it. It's more indepth than that but this basically sums it up
It's been great seeing all of them discover these awesome movies, and realize where many memes have come from 😁 Such an interesting way to connect the past and present! My 19-year-old self would never have believed this back then, saw this and Die Hard and ALIENS multiple times on the big screen. Amazing times.
Great reaction and good movie choice. Looks like a few others answered the question of why the Predator fought Arnie hand-to-hand toward the end. The Predator race is called the Yautja, they are hunters and warriors and they develop their tech based on the species they hunt. When you watch Predator 2, watch for the "trophy wall" towards the end. 😊.
My take on the hand-to-hand fight at the end is because it was the first time in the movie the Predator went up against someone without a weapon. When the Predator encountered Billy, Billy was wielding a knife, and the Predator stabbed him with his arm blades, ending it very quickly. Since Dutch had no weapon at all, the Predator fought him hand-to-hand until it was clear Dutch was defeated, and that's when the Predator brandished his arm blades to finish what he perceived as an already won battle.
Good reaction and you had pretty on spot guessing going on for the reasons why the Predator was doing whatever it was doing. I found it strange that you guys were surprised that men would be sad over their dead "brothers" who they have been with literally years together in deadly situations...
You said there aren’t many breaks when there’s just dialogue, but when there are, you have to pay attention, for instance, when Anna says, “When I was little, we found a man. He looked like - like, butchered. The old women in the village crossed themselves, and whispered crazy things, strange things. "El diablo cazador de hombres". Only in the hottest years this happens. And this year, it grows hot. We begin finding our men. We found them sometimes without their skin... and sometimes much, much worst. "El que hace trofeos de los hombres" means "the demon who makes trophies of man". This is a large clue as to the motivations of the Predator, it being an alien big game hunter, who hunts humans for sport, and collects their skull as trophies. There’s more to it than just that, but that would include spoilers for other movies and we don’t want that. 😉👍
The more you watch, the more subtle clues you find. Like when Jesse Ventura’s character says “he’s got no time to bleed” Predator offs him in a manner where he doesn’t bleed.
It's a masterpiece really. Just amazing they could even put such a film together and pull it off. The most quotable movie ever imo. I think it's that way because the actors weren't exactly actors and it helped them with the lines..so everything they say is cool. You should react to Harry and the Hendersons. Keven Peter Hall also dons the suit in that one but it's such a fun.
Fun fact. The black gentleman piloting the helicopter at the end of the movie is Kevin Peter Hall. He's the guy who played the predator. The producers and the director really liked how he portrayed a trophy hunter from another world. At the same time, EVERYONE on set felt really bad for him cause he had to run around in the sweltering Mexican jungle in a latex suit. So the director wanted to give him some screen time.
New to this channel, fun watching the younger generation watching film's I grew up on, I highly recommend watching John Carpenter's The Thing 1982, unless you've seen it already, well worth a watch.
Arnold Schwarzenegger enjoyed the opportunity to portray someone frightened and vulnerable. As you pointed out, it's something he hadn't done in acting before.
Stan Winston did stellar work on the Predator look. Really an original piece of work. The actor who played the Predator talked about how hot and heavy the costume was and he could barely breathe in it. Pretty good movie that holds up mostly after all these years. Predator 2 is in a different locale. Since the Predator is just a species that hunts men for sport, each movie can be its own thing, with new predators and prey. Pretty cool premise.
It was James Cameron, who helped design the predators face, because Stan Winston was stuck, trying to think of some thing, and they were on airplane flight together, and James Cameron suggested something with mandibles
A slasher film with hardened soldiers as the victims instead of dumb teens. Love it. Edit: oh, and as a native american, Billy was my favorite character.
Where were you when you first saw this movie?
ööööööh... i think at home but I can't remember when being short before my 40ies and havin watched it countless times 😂😂 but I'm pretty sure I watched it years later being 4 years old 1987 😂😂
Home, was in my early teens. Scary as hell!
I was 10 years old. They took me to the cinema somehow. I couldn't sleep 2 nights in a row. :D
Love the movie btw. :)
He recognised him as a warrior and someone to have a genuine 1 on 1 fight without the technological advantage.
yea i was wondering, too. they seemed not to get this warrior-attitude, same/already with the last-stand scene of Billy.
is it so outdated nowadays? dunno
@@intothestorm1394I don’t think the warrior attitude is “outdated” as much as it has been “lost”. But at least that means it can be found again lol
The trophy hunter trope in fictional entertainment isn’t as much of a thing anymore. Back in the day they were all over the cartoons.
If I had a dollar for every time I had to explain this scene to women I'd have my own private island.
It even admires his skull up close before deciding to go hand to hand
Fun fact. They used a voice actor for most of the predators vocalizations. Specifically the various levels of crackling sounds it makes. That actor is Peter Cullen, who is most famous for being the voice of Optimus Prime.
He also did night of the demons. Angela voice.
80s did diversity better
I always thought they used the weird sounds that ravens and Aussie crows make
If you sit and listen to them, they make that exact same clicking, churrrling sound (I don't know what else to call it)
It did crack me up when you guys reacted and said "why is that such a commonly used Sci fi monster sound?" Because of this movie!! 😂
Everything since has been an imitation of these classic 80s movies
Jean Claude van Damme should've played all the Predator stunts but he declined
During filming the actor playing Billy had a bodyguard, not to protect him from people, but to protect the people from him
because he was a very mean drunk.
The behind the scenes stories about this movie are L-E-G-E-N-D-A-R-Y! With all these “Alpha” males isolated in the jungle.
Which was a big mistake. He and the rest of the cast got along really well. The only person he couldn't stand and almost got into a fight with was his bodyguard.
@@ericomartins9794 wrong. Carl Weathers hated his guts
@@Forever_Thatteroh really? But didn’t they do a movie called action Jackson?
It always cracks me up when reactors are surprised at how smart the predator is. I mean, it's literally an alien whose civilization figured out interstellar travel, invisibility cloaks, and pulse laser weapons, among other things. Sheesh!
Hears a raunchy joke: "ohh it's the eighties"
Yes, it's the eighties - when jocking was still allowed.
You got to give them a break.
They're in a generation where a wife's boyfriend is acceptable.
Young people are different.
One of the greatest mid movie genre swaps in movie history. Starts out as a typical, bombastic, over the top 80's action movie. Then completely changes in a classic horror movie when the Predator takes out every group member one by one, untiull the final showdown with our protagonist. Its so well done.
Regarding genre swaps, they should watch Dusk Till Dawn if they hadn't already.
@@lowtechredneck6704 Yup another brilliant example.
The first couple of acts of the movie set up how tough and capable these men are, so when the Predator starts taking them out despite their best efforts, you really appreciate that they're up against something deadlier than anything on Earth.
@@danieldickson8591 I completely agree. This movie is a prime example of show, dont tell.
@@Smido83 I think Predator does it better because 1. it sets it up without giving it away, and 2. it doesn't boast about it. I love the early Roberto Rodriguez movies, but they're essentially show-offs.
Billy's scream still chills me to the bone. The fear of not knowing what the Predator did to him, you just know it was horrible.
Probably impaled him up the ass
Yeah that's a good point that the choice they made to keep the viewers with scary like hey wtf?, that's very good.
Particularly since Billy came across as the most ferocious of the whole team, but even he was brought down quickly. At least the Predator seems to have respected him enough to not just shoot him.
@@danieldickson8591 fact.
Predator 2 will give you a good idea of what might have happened. He probably went the same way Dillion did.
These creatures are warriors basically and when it took off it's mask and fought him hand to hand, it was giving him respect.
As I don't want to generalize, I want to see other women reacting to the movie to see if they also miss that. It was pretty obvious to me since I was a boy.
Now I am interested to see if there is a difference between men and women understanding the predator motives
I don't understand how anyone can be confused. Listening to their response afterwards was actually confusing to me.
how does a kid get the movie but not these two?

Predator 2 is well worth a watch in my opinion, a bit of an underrated movie where they keep the core concept but add a completely new setting and situation which makes it quite different from the first one. Would love to see you react to that one too. And it has Danny Glover so... :)
That's true. It also goes a step deeper into the lore of the predator species without overexplaining everything.
Predator 2 is super underrated. It has good action, memorable scenes of the city hunter and great acting from the lead actor Danny Glover. It was underappreciated probably due to the audience wanting Arnold to reprise his role as Dutch.

Very true.
That's Jessie "The Body" Ventura (During his wrestling days. )😉
There actually is another movie, namely „The Running Man“, which also features both Arnold Schwarzenegger und Jesse Ventura.
@@michaelkonig530- I stand corrected. Although I still think it's interesting trivia. 👍
Also Sonny Landham ran for Governor of Kentucky!
They also both used the same prop. The minigun here is the same one from terminator 2.
Billy facing off the Jungle Hunter is like drawing first blood. Billy wounded himself and denied the Jungle Hunter the satisfaction of drawing first blood. And that's why, beyond Dutch, Billy was the most prized skull trophy.
That's interesting, never realized that. Heh, after having watched this film 100 times, I'm still learning new things about it. I like that.
Right, the young blood coming to earth to hunt is like a rite of passage.

I think the death of all his friends / comrades in arms might have also contributed to this.
@@jasontoddman7265 It's part of the brilliance of this movie that the first two acts build up what total badasses this group of men are, how they're a match for anything on this Earth.

Arnold's work ethic was bar-none. He knew it would be best for the movie if he didn't just trounce the Predator.
That "stick around " always get's me :D
Films were clever back then, by not explaining too much and allowing audiences to fill in the gaps, the majority of veiwers were never disappointed, people would just invent the coolest backstory
I like to think The Predator was based on a great piece of alien literature, much like Moby Dick, where a hunter is driven by his obsession to catch the massive hairless ape with the weird accent leading to his own downfall.
The Predator mimicking Billy's laugh at the end....🥶🥶🥶

Interesting that the girls couldn't understand why the Predator fought Dutch hand to hand instead of using its blaster.
Every single guy who ever saw this film instantly understood the reason.
Yea. That was odd.
@@lkf8799
And girls too.
@@lkf8799 It is most definitely a guy thing.
Honor as a concept is more deeply ingrained in men. Especially in combat.
This is a spoiler of info you get from other movies. Nice try though.
Also, the yautja were enslaved by the amengi.
If I recall correctly, they breed them to be big and strong and trained them to use tech.
Not sure when this lore was made.
Also the movie Predators is quite good.
I know it's a stereotype, but Billy is my favorite. Stoic, professional, and supremely skilled. And goes out on his own terms.
Nothing wrong with that stereotype for sure. My fav too!

Great explanation TY for that. Now I don't have to. 🤣🤣🤣
In explaining the Predator, I've sometimes found it useful to compare them to The Hirogen, in Star Trek: Voyager. Most Trekkies get it after that.
Doesn't help if they're not a Trekkie though, then you stand a good chance of just confusing them further!
thanks for not saying "fun facts"
@@Bryon_Turner I've seen video of him doing the sounds at a convention. The man is a master of his craft.
If you decide to continue with the series, with each film, a little more of the Predator’s history, motivation, and lore are given. Some of the sequels are good, others are not so good. My personal favorite is the third sequel, Predators! So I am always hopeful if they make another one.
The third sequel is 'The Predator'. Predators is the 2nd sequel.
hulu made a new predator movie
Predators is really underrated, and technically a direct sequel to this.
Fun fact: The helicopter pilot on the end of the movie was played by Kevin Peter Hall, the actor who also played the predator.
NOICE.
James Cameron also gave him the mandibles idea for the face.
Really interesting what you said ...

The answer to all your questions about the gratuitous action: It's the '80s. 💥
That why most of the explosions have fireballs.
The girls were completely perplexed by a warrior culture.
And male jokes.
"Ugh, it was the 80s."

First time my wife actually sat down and watched Predator she said something similar.
The movie specifically stated that the Predator comes hunting to Earth at the hottest seasons, so it would make its infrared vision ineffective too.
We see the fucking thing come to Earh in a fucking space shuttle right at the start of this movie. @@thamor4746
Please watch some Arnie comedies. 🙏
Hawkins, the nerd with the glasses is screenwriter Shane Black who wrote among other things Lethal Weapon and Iron Man 3.

Predator 2 is next and is great too.. looking forward to you two seeing it :)
Right, the Predator arrived at Earth in the opening scene. And it was hunting for sport. The reason it took off its helmet at the end for a fist fight with Arnie was because it respected him so much. It probably also used blade weapons when fighting Billy.. even though we didn't see that scene. Dutch(Arnie) took the gun off Anna, because he already knew the Predator wouldn't attack her if she was unarmed.. and posed no challenge
They have a great pride in honour.. a bit like the Klingons
Not many reactors recognise that the Predator is mimicking Billy's laugh when it starts the countdown. Well done Haley... 👍
It was stated in the subtitles.

Totally agree! Though I thik CGI knife in "stick around" scene would look better 😂

Welcome to the world of Yautja!

If it bleeds, we can react to it
Trivia note, James Cameron actually helped with the design of the predator
He and Stan Winston, we’re on an flight together, and Stan Winston was sketching out ideas for the predator, and James Cameron suggested some thing with mandibles
PREDATORS(2010) with Adrian Brody and PREY(2022) are good.
Their reaction when Dillons arm falls off and keeps shooting is priceless😂😂 you just dont see that anymore
Want to see terminator dark fate reaction ❤😢
Fun fact: There's a possibility that this movie takes place before the Terminator. Dutch was badly injured after the fight against the Predator. His body was probably sold to Cyberdyne.
Predator is such a great movie.
Predator is such a great movie...
It's more indepth than that but this basically sums it up
"It only happens in the hottest years, and this year it grows hot." We're in predator season.
Looking forward to the next one.
It's been great seeing all of them discover these awesome movies, and realize where many memes have come from 😁 Such an interesting way to connect the past and present! My 19-year-old self would never have believed this back then, saw this and Die Hard and ALIENS multiple times on the big screen. Amazing times.
I watched it in the UK in the cinema in 1988, I was 22. This was a crazy film at the time. It was serious sci-fi that had that Arnold touch.
I love the First reacten

He's taking off his gun and mask because Arnold doesn't have any weapons left.
He wants a fair fight. Predators have a strong sense of honor
What a classic
